Dear Friends: Thank you so much for your patience during February’s snow/ice event. I understand it was very confusing with cancellations and closures. Please know that our main concern was the safety of staff and members. Hopefully this is a rare occasion and Spring will come soon.

We will need a few volunteers to help out with the Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, March 14 between 6 to 11 am. Let me know if you can help. I hope to see many of you here!

Program Director Notes….

Dear Friends, I’m so happy it’s March and hopefully the weather is cooperating with all of the fun things that we have planned this month. I wanted to give you a heads up on the symphony concert that we will be attending next month on April 17. It’s part of the coffee and classics series at the Nashville Symphony: Giancarlo conducts Beethoven. I have already purchased 12 tickets.

Please let me know if you are interested in going to this concert. I will keep a log in my office. First come, first serve. The cost for the van and the ticket is $30.00. This is a great deal! If this goes over well, we may do this more often.

There are a lot of spring events going on in the next few months.

If you hear of something that sounds like fun, let me know! I am always open to trying something new! Thanks and happy spring!

American Legion Fashion Show Join us in supporting our veterans on Sat., March 21. Post 88 is hosting a fashion show with clothes from Chico’s that you will love! Dr. Ming Wang was condemned to a life of poverty.

He avoided this miserable destiny by learning to dance and play the er-hu, allowing him to participate in the Chinese propaganda program and continue his education. MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES The Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes quarterly at FiftyForward Donelson Station. Sign up for Spring classes on Saturday, March 14. Class Updates 2015 COMPUTER CLASSES All computer classes are $20 for members and $30 for non-members Classes are on Saturdays from 9-11 am (4 classes per month) Beginning Microsoft Word-Feb.14—Mar. 7 Microsoft Word is a very powerful word processing application designed to save you time while creating letters, reports and other documents. You will learn the basic features of MS Word, the skills to edit and format documents with ease, and the ability to set up pages and print documents.

Advanced Microsoft-Word-Mar. 14—Apr. 4 This course is designed to teach advanced techniques on how to program more efficiently and automate repetitive processes. This will benefit those who deal with large documents and perform repetitive tasks which could be automated using macros.

Basic Computer Class-Apr. 11— May 2.-You will learn Windows 7 navigation, how to save and search files, how to pin and unpin applications and documents to the Start Menu and Taskbar, and how to customize the desktop. The class will also cover what each part of windows in Window Explorer means and what each icon does.

Basic Internet Skills-May 16—30 (3 weeks/$15) -Students will learn Internet Explorer, how to download and install Chrome and Firefox, and how to add search engines to the browsers. The class will discuss the difference between the internet and the world wide web., what domain names are, and answer the question of, “Where does the internet end?” class will cover customizing your internet experience.

Judy Riggan, dental hygienist for Dr. Janet Clodfelter in Donelson, will explain these statements during a presentation on senior oral health care on Wednesday, March 18 at 10 am. In addition to the dental issues faced by people of all ages, seniors have special concerns. Dry mouth can result in increased rates of decay, bad breath and oral inflammation. Reflux increases the likelihood of cavities. Arthritis, Parkinson’s and other muscular and neurological conditions can limit one’s ability to care for their teeth. Join Judy for practical information on how to prevent dental issues. Refreshments will be served! Sign-up in the front office.

MARCH TRIPS AND EVENTS Hiking Club–Wed., March. 4 It’s March and time to enjoy the outdoors! Join us at Long Hunter State Park in Mt. Juliet on a self-guided, paved arboretum trail. The hike is 3.7 miles, so please make sure that you can endure the almost 2-hour hike. Bring water and dress for the weather. Cost for the van is $5.00. Leave the center at 9:30 am.

Bluebird Cafe–Mon., March 9 The Bluebird Café hosts another senior concert which includes FREE donuts and coffee. The Bluebird has hosted many famous musicians and songwriters. First timers are encouraged to sign-up! Cost for the van is $5.00. Leave the center at 9:15 am.

Tour of the Tennessee State Capitol Building–Tues., March. 10 Join us for a guided tour of our state capitol building, designed by William Strickland who is buried in the north façade of the building. The grounds contain statues honoring Sam Davis, Sgt. Alvin York and Presidents Andrew Jackson and Andrew Johnson. The tombs of President and Mrs. James K. Polk are also located on the Capitol grounds. This is a must see! Cost for the van is $5.00. Leave the center at 9:30 am.

Lunchbunch– Thurs., March 12 We are going to the restaurant located in the Nordstrom Department store at Green Hills Mall called Sixth and Pine. This is a hip diner with the heart of a deli where you can enjoy daily specials such as crusted salmon and braised short ribs. Soups and their signature salads are available daily too. Cost for the van is $5.00. Leave the center at 10:45 am.

Tour of Sherith Israel Synagogue–Fri., March 13 FiftyForward member Karen Dotter will be our tour guide of her century-old Orthodox synagogue that is rich with history. This West End Ave. building dates back to 1948. Karen, an active long-time member of the congregation, will share her knowledge and love of this place she calls “home”. We will then head to Noshville, an authentic New York style delicatessen, for lunch. Cost for the van is $5.00. Leave the center at 9:30 am.

Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser-Sat., March 14 from 7-10 am. Enjoy pancakes and sausage while benefitting FiftyForward Donelson Station. The cost is $5 for adults, children 12 and under are $3 and $20 family cap. The bargain basement will be open too with lots of “new” items!

St. Patrick’s Day Center Lunch– Tues., March. 17 at 11:00 am. Join us for a traditional Irish meal of corned beef and cabbage and entertainment by Michael Elley.

Michael is a musician, singer, songwriter, actor, playwright and producer. His list of credits include film, TV, commercials, night clubs and the stage. Wear GREEN! The cost for the lunch is $7.00. Please note: This starts at 11 am!

Dental Hygiene Presentation –Wed., March. 18 at 10 am. A veteran hygienist from locally run Dr. Janet Clodfelter’s office will discuss senior oral health care and the special concerns we encounter as we age. Gain practical information on how to prevent and treat dental issues specific to seniors. Refreshments will be served. Make sure to sign up in the front office. This is FREE!!!!

Chaffin’s Barn/Loveless Café –Thurs., March 19. Join us for a tasty breakfast at the famous Loveless Café, known for their southern food (especially biscuits) made from scratch. Then, off to Chaffin’s to see “I Take this Man” written by Jack Sharkey. The story stars Gideon Hollis who finds an unconscious man lying in Copley Square after the Boston Marathon. Since nice guys finish last, she reasons this must be Mr. Right. When Mr. Right revives, Giddeon tells him they are married and thus, the chaos begins. The cost for the van and ticket is $25.00. Brunch at Ellendale’s-Fri., March 20. We are staying local and heading down the street to Ellendale’s for their Friday brunch for $9.95. Ellendale’s is family owned and operated serving contemporary American Cuisine. Cost for the van is $2.00. Leave the center at 10:45 am.
