Deloitte Technology Day Tuesday, June 14 from 9 am– 1 pm Technology professionals from Deloitte will be at FiftyForward Donelson Station to help you with your technology questions. Whether you are new to technology or an experienced user, volunteers can help you learn more about and simplify your technology. Please bring your device with you (i.e. phone, camera, laptop, etc.). Examples of the help they can provide include: ● Using your phone ● Taking a selfie ● Understanding your device ● Setting-up, protecting and/or using Facebook ● Purchasing technology ● Staying connected with family, friends, and the world

Garden Club Donelson Station’s Garden Club has done a fantastic job with the center’s landscaping. We appreciate all of their hard work and dedication. If you would like to join, the group will start meeting every Monday at 9 am throughout the summer. Everyone is welcome!

When we visited the Donelson Community Gardens last month, we were impressed with the generosity of the founder, Jan King, and her volunteer-based, non-profit organization, which helps the community by growing fruits and vegetables to give to those in need.

The Community Garden needs our help!

They need help maintaining the raised gardens and keeping the area beautiful.

Our Garden Club will be helping the 3rd Thursday of each month from 9 -11 am.

Center Director Notes…

Dear Friends: Summer is upon us with excitement and opportunities! I hope you will join us for some of the fabulous activities we have planned.

A huge thanks to the Matching Campaign donors. As of 5/26, we have raised $6,959 (before match)!! We slightly exceeded last year’s amount. The campaign ends June 4!

As our center grows and becomes the place for people to go for fun activities and classes, there may be some growing pains.

There are times when our large parking lot gets full. If you can’t find parking in front of the building, please go to the upper lot near the railroad tracks or to either side of the building. Please do not park in no parking zones or block any throughways. Consider parking in the upper lot or sides of the buildings to leave the closer spots for members who may have a harder time walking.

In May we had a Disaster Drill simulating what to do if there was a threat inside the building. Please understand that quarterly fire drills and this drill are important for staff and volunteer training and are required for our federal funding. Summer is coming! Yay! As always, we have a lot of fun things planned for June. Stay tuned for my pop-up trip too. I have mentioned a couple of future events taking place in August that I need your help with. The first is the Chico’s Fashion Show on August 17. I need models. Please see me if you are interested in modeling some beautiful clothes and a discount on the clothes.

Secondly, we have the talent show on August 24 (this will act as our monthly center luncheon)! Let’s just have fun with this one. I don’t care whether your act is dancing, singing, magic or comedy.

We need your participation. Please come see me so that I can start a list of those who are interested in participating.

Writer’s Group Dorothy King, an accomplished author, has offered to help us start a writer’s group that will meet the 3rd Thursday of each month at 6 pm. Anyone who has had the urge to write or just wants to find out about the writing process is welcome. Dorothy welcomes beginner’s and seasoned writers. This is FREE! Chico’s Fashion Show Chico’s will be hosting a fashion show here at Donelson Station on Wednesday, August 17 at 10:30 am. If you are interested in modeling in this show, please see Lisa. You will receive an appointment with Chico’s to try on the outfits for the show. These outfits include all accessories (shoes, jewelry, scarves etc.). Those who want to participate will receive 20% off the outfits they are modeling if they choose to purchase them. We know a lot of our ladies love Chico’s! We hope to see you at (or in) the fashion show.

MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station. Registration for the Summer Quarter is Saturday, June 11. To be added to the Constant Contact email list, send a request to John Martin at classes@mtgms.org.

Chair Massages Enjoy a 15-minutes chair massage by Omniquest’s Valerie Dennison. Massages are $1 per minute and are done in 15 minute increments only. You can sign up for an appointment in the office or at the volunteer desk. Valerie will be here the first and third Thursdays of each month from 10 am-12 pm. This is a great way to pamper yourself and reduce stress without spending a lot of money. FiftyForward receives 10% from each chair massage. You will pay Valerie directly.

Donelson Station’s Got Talent!

Wednesday, August 24th at 10 am Everyone is invited to participate in our first ever Talent Show! All talents are welcome.

Get your act together and start practicing now!

Lisa Maddox and James Cunningham (former Office Manager) will perform a (comedic) singing duo on stage, so come and join the fun. This show will be fun, creative and will challenge those who may have a fear of performing on stage. See Lisa Maddox if you are interested in performing.

Lunch will follow at 11:30 am. The cost is $8.

Pool Tournament Tuesday, June 21 at 9am After losing to Donelson (12-7) in softball, FiftyForward Madison Station has invited us to play them in a pool tournament.

It will be an 8-ball, double elimination tournament. Anyone is welcome to play. You MUST sign up in the office or at the volunteer desk by Friday, June 17 to ride the van and participate in the tournament. The van ride is FREE!

Board Game Day Several members have requested a day to play board games. The center has numerous games in including Scattergories, Scrabble, Clue, Monopoly and more. What a great way to meet other people while exercising your brain. If you are interested in playing board games, meet in the conference room on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 10 am. The first get together will be June 9.

Senior Brain Games Do you like playing Trivial Pursuit? Do you have a lot of information in your head just waiting to get out?

Talk to Angela or Lisa about the Senior Brain Games! This fun competition pares senior centers against each other for the chance to go to the state and national competitions!

Beginner’s Bridge We would like to thank our longtime member, Betty Allen, for taking time out of her schedule to teach our members the basics of playing bridge. They enjoyed getting together and learning the game. Bridge involves a cognitive workout as well as social interaction. The combination of these two components sets Bridge apart from any other leisure-time activities as an ideal environment for fostering an active, healthy brain. Bridge also helps you improve your processing speed, as well as your patience.

We are asking experienced Bridge players to join in on the fun and enjoy a game of bridge on Tuesdays from 10 am—2 pm in the conference room.

JUNE TRIPS AND EVENTS Chair Massages-Thurs., June 2 from 10 am—12 pm. Teacher of Nature-Based Healing, Valerie Dennison, will provide chair massages by appointment only for $1 per minute. Enjoy an ergonomically designed chair that allows you to fully relax while receiving massage treatments to the head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands and back areas of your body. NO oils or lotions are used.

Make an appointment with the front office or the volunteer desk (appointments are in 15 minute increments only). She will be here the 1st and 3rd Thursdays.

Blue Heron Cruise-Fri., June 3. Join Captain Jim Steele for a scenic nature cruise along the Cumberland River on his Coast Guard inspected 40’ pontoon boat. There are plenty of shaded areas to sit, and the deck is open to the sunshine and breezes. Lunch will be at the Riverview Restaurant and Marina.

Cost for the cruise and van is $18. Leave the center at 9:30 am. Sign up in the office or at the volunteer desk.

Lunchbunch to Siam Cuisine-Tues., June 7. If you like Thai food then you will LOVE Siam Cuisine located on White Bridge Rd. Siam Cuisine is a cornerstone in Nashville and has been recognized for their outstanding Thai dishes, excellent service and friendly staff. Enjoy Pad Thai, vegetarian dishes and so much more. Leave the center at 10:45 am. The cost for the van is $7. Sign up in the front office or volunteer desk.

Elephant Sanctuary –Wed., June 8. The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, TN is one of the nation’s largest natural habitat refuge developed specifically for African and Asian elephants. All of the elephants are retired from zoos and circuses where they lived their lives on public display. To ensure that they can thrive in the most peaceful and normal habitat possible, we will not be able to see the elephants in person. We will view a live video feed of the elephants and then watch a video about them and hear their rescue stories. The gift shop offers sanctuary merchandise, with all proceeds benefiting the elephants. Lunch will be at the Junkyard Dog Steakhouse, rated the best place to eat in Hohenwald. This is an hour and a half van ride. The van ride is $17. Leave the center at 8:15 am. Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Fontanel Mansion Tour-Thurs., June 9. The mansion at fontanel is a 33,000-square foot log cabin and former home of country music legend and Hall of Fame member Barbara Mandrell. The mansion boasts over twenty rooms, thirteen bathrooms, five fireplaces, two kitchens, an indoor pool and even an indoor shooting range. We will also visit the Prichard’s Distillery and the Natchez Hills Winery, which is located on the property. Lunch will be at Café Fontanella, home of award-winning Italian dishes. Leave the center at 9:15 am. Cost for the tour and the van is $26. You are responsible for your own lunch, too.

Deloitte Technology Impact Day-Tues., June 14 from 9 am—1 pm. The volunteers from Deloitte will be here to assist you with your technological devices (IPhone, Android phone, tablets, Ipads, digital cameras and laptops). You will receive one-on-one assistance for as long as you need. This is FREE! No need to sign up!

There will be plenty of volunteers available. They are here once a year, so take advantage of their knowledge.

Nashville Sounds Game-Wed., June 15. Come see the Nashville Sounds vs. The Memphis Redbirds at First Tennessee Park, which opened in April 2015. We will be seated in a shady area next to other FiftyForward groups. Lots of food and drink available for purchase. The cost for the van, your ticket and parking is $22. Leave the center at 11 am. This is a ticketed event. No credits!!!! Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Fisk University Art Galleries-Thurs., June 16. Fisk provides a welcoming environment and foster an appreciation and understanding of art through exhibitions, educational programs and research. The galleries maintain a permanent collection that spans three centuries of history to include Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keeffe, Alfred Stieglitz and more. Admission is $6 and will be paid directly to the gallery. The cost for the van is $6. Leave the center at 9:30 am. Lunch will be at Germantown Café.

Mystery Lunch –Fri., June 17. During the months of June, July and August we will offer only one Mystery Trip. We will resume two trips starting in September. Pool Tournament at Madison Station-Tues., June 21. All you pool enthusiasts are invited to take on the Madison Station pool players in a double elimination 8-ball tournament. Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk. The van ride is FREE! Leave the center at 9 am.

BlueCross BlueShield-Wed., June 22 from 10 am –12 pm. BlueCross BlueShield of TN will be in our hallway to supply information on Fall Prevention Awareness and have FREE giveaways available for everyone. Please stop by and visit with the representatives who are available for questions.

Center Luncheon-Wed., June 22 at 11 am. Donelson Station’s own Sing-Along Choir will be entertaining us with songs that we all know and love! We are invited to sing along with them as they perform. The Palm Tree Café will be serving a delicious lunch. Cost for the luncheon is $8. Sign up in the office or at the volunteer desk.

Greeting Card Class-Wed., June 22 at 1:30 pm. Join Virginia Provencher, our greeting card expert, and make handmade cards. This has been a popular class, and participants have made some beautiful cards. You have your choice of different holidays from July 4th cards, birthday cards, thank you cards and more. The cost is $10 and includes all of your supplies. Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Candle Making Class-Thurs., June 23 at 10 am. This has been a popular class among our members. Learn how to make gel scented candles in wine glasses or shot glasses. Each person gets to make two candles to take home with them. The cost for the class is $15, which includes all supplies. Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Supper Club-Thurs., June 23. The dinner gang is headed to Pomodoro East in East Nashville.

Pomodoro East serves authentic Italian cuisine in a warm rustic environment. Enjoy steamed mussels, calamari, chicken parmesan, pizzas and lots of different pastas. Leave the center at 5 pm. Cost for the van is $7. Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Chico’s and Lunch at Fulin’s-Fri., June 24. Chico’s clothing store in Mt. Juliet has invited us to check out the newest items in women’s fashion. Our members will receive 10% off any purchase during our visit (discount applied on this trip ONLY!). Lunch will be at Fulin’s Asian Cuisine which offers Chinese and Japanese food including sushi. The Escape Game Nashville-Tues., June 28. This is going to be an unforgettable trip! The Escape Game is America’s #1 escape room adventure for friends, families and co-workers.

You will have one hour to escape from a room by solving puzzles, unraveling clues and cracking codes while working as a team. We will split up into two groups and placed in two separate rooms. The cost for the game and the van is $34. Leave the center at 9:45 am. Lunch will be at the Yellow Porch. Enjoy salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers and wraps. Book Club will meet on June 27 at 10:30 am.  Tai Chi is FREE! This class is great if you have balance issues. Tuesdays at 1:30 pm. rd  BookTalk will meet the 3 Tuesday in July and October. Join the librarian from the Hermitage branch library as she discusses and shares her insight on books she has read.  Our Digital Camera Club, Computer Club and IPAD/Tablet groups welcome all interested. Just show up with your gadgets! Groups meet the 2nd and 3rd Tuesdays monthly 10 am. 

Couponing with Katie will now meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month! rd  Summit Audiology will be here the 3 Wednesday of every month from 1:15 pm-3 pm. All hearing tests are FREE! Make an appointment today.  Line Dancing is a FREE and FUN exercise each Wed. at 9:30 am. No experience needed!  Have you experienced the loss of a loved one? The Grief and Loss Group meets Sunday, June 5 at 2 pm at St. Phillips’ Church located at 85 Fairway Drive in Donelson. They also play cards the 4th Thursday monthly at Donelson Station at 9:30 am.  We welcome anyone who has a June birthday to join us for cake on Thursday, June 23 at 1 pm.

Tailgating Share a snack with the aerobics group Fridays after class! Just show up!  Join Color & Crochet on Fridays at 10 am. Bring your coloring book or crochet project and meet up with “old” and “new” friends. This is a time to talk, relax and explore your creative side. If you would like to learn to crochet, we have a couple of experienced members who will assist you.  Sing-Along Choir meets Fridays at 11 am. This group has a lot of fun! They even take their show on the road to assisted living centers in the area. Just show up! st rd  Let’s Bowl! Join us the 1 and 3 Fridays at 2 pm at the Strike & Spare in Donelson located at 2710 Old Lebanon Rd. Shoe rental $1 and $1 per game! You can’t beat that! 

All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance, and credit will be given to those already signed up.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time. Please remember that presenters work hard to bring education/information to the center!

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place on the trip.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.
