Center Dinner and Concert Featuring Exit 219 Thursday, July 28 at 5:15 pm This month we will have a center dinner instead of a lunch. Don’t miss our featured band, Exit 219!

Their music repertoire spans the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, plus Christian, patriotic, jazz standards and contemporary songs. Exit 219 consists of nine members including Jeannie Gleaves (piano), Gary Sinz (drums), Joe Gleaves (drums), David Keith (sound), Mark Perkins (Bass/keyboard), Brian Caldwell (tenor), Debbie Keith (alto), Cathy Caldwell (2nd soprano) and Gabrielle Troster (soprano). They have been featured throughout the years at state and county fairs, street festivals, sock hops and high school reunions. Come out and enjoy a delicious dinner from the Palm Tree Café, and put your dancing shoes on because you are NOT going to sit down once this group starts playing.

Nashville Public Library FREE Technology Fair at Donelson Station on Wednesday, July 22 from 10 am –2 pm The Nashville Public Library will host a FREE Technology Fair just for FiftyForward members.

Staff from the Nashville Public Library will be on site to demonstrate technology products that are available for patrons to check out, teach an IPAD class, answer questions about social media and much, much more.

Beginners and experienced users will learn about digital products, classes offered at the library and online services that interest them the most.

Come see the devices that everyone is talking about.

CENTER MEMBERSHIP FiftyForward Donelson Station is one of five active aging centers in Davidson County and two in Williamson County. These centers offer various programs, classes and events monthly as well as access to the center amenities.

Membership is $120 annually or $10 via monthly bank draft.

Center Director Notes…

Dear Friends: Lisa has done a great job again with this month’s great events and trips. I hope you take advantage of all we have to offer.

Thank you to those who contributed to this year’s matching campaign, which totaled more than $9,000! These funds will be matched by a generous donor and will help cover the center’s overhead costs, which aren’t met by membership revenue alone.

New 2016-17 Advisory Council members were elected June 23rd: Roberta Campbell, Mary Cox, Evelyn Cutler, Karen Dotter, Jack Frank, David Kattau, and Kaye Petersen. Center members are welcome to attend meetings. We meet the 4th Thursday monthly.

Another way to get involved is through our committees, which includes Membership/Volunteer, Fundraising, Program and LongTerm Planning. If you are interested in joining a committee please speak to me or to a Advisory Council member.

I have some changes and updates to report. We will NO longer be having a Fashion Show here at Donelson Station. Chico’s district office cannot honor the discounts that our models were offered, making it too hard to do a show. Don’t worry, we have lots more to look forward to in the upcoming months.

Lastly, our talent show will be moved to Wednesday, August 31 due to some scheduling conflicts. I have a few people signed up to participate but we need more!!!

Mark your calendars! This year’s BBQ celebrates 30 years, and we want it to be our best yet! Help plan the event, recruit volunteers and collect silent auction items! Our Pink Pig will go up soon to track those $25, $50 and $100 donations to offset food costs. In addition to cash donations, we need can soft drinks and water. Just drop them off at the office!

The Talent Show has been moved to August 31 at 10 am.

There have been a few people sign up, but we need more acts. This can be a silly, comedy act, a singing act or anything you wish!

August Center Luncheon with Steven Whitson Save the Date!!! Steven Whitson is a Nashville recording artist and songwriter born and raised in the small town of Trimble in West Tennessee. He has released 12 independent CD’s and opened for Rascal Flatts, Craig Morgan, Marty Stuart and Aaron Tippin. He performs at Barbara Mandrell’s Mansion, The Fontanel, and has been signed to their new label, Fontanel Records. Steven has debuted on the “Marie Osmond Show” on the Hallmark Channel and works with his mentor, Brenda Lee. Steven will be here on August 24 at 11 am.

Mah Jongg We are excited to have an experienced Mah Jongg teacher at Donelson Station. Suzette Sutton is well versed in the American and Chinese version of Mah Jongg that is played with a variation of tiles. It requires four people at each table. Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. This is the first time we have ever offered Mah Jongg. If you are interested, sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk. The lessons will be each Thursday at 10 am beginning on July 14.

Silver Sneakers is Coming!

FiftyForward Donelson Station will soon be a Silver Sneakers site. If you’re Medicare Advantage Plan offers access to fitness centers through Silver Sneakers, you may be able to have your FiftyForward membership paid for you!

We are working out the details at the time of printing the Depot, so please check back with us soon on when this goes into effect.

Remember, we are already a Silver&Fit site, an additional program through Medicare Advantage plans. Unsure if your plan qualifies? Let a staff member check!

Book Club Join the Donelson Station Book Club on the 4th Mondays of each month to discuss the book of the month. July’s discussion will be about the title “Sister of My Heart” by Chitra Banjeree Divakaruni. No need to sign up, just show up!

Book Talk The librarian from The Hermitage Library will be here on July 19 at 2 pm. She recommends book titles to book enthusiasts without giving away the entire storyline. She comes to our center only once every quarter so make sure to take advantage of this service. No need to sign up, just show up!

Pet Community Center The Pet Community Center’s mobile unit will be in our parking lot on Saturday, July 30 from 9 am-1 pm.

Services are $15 and under including vaccinations, microchips, and preventatives for fleas, ticks and heartworms. No appointments are necessary. Just show up!

Cap Tel & Summit Audiology Cap Tel provides FREE captioned telephones for people experiencing hearing loss. A Cap Tel Representative will be in our hallway on Wed., July 20 at 1 pm to assist those who may qualify for a FREE phone. Stop by and see her to get more information.

New Bus We are happy to announce that the new “bus” is here!!! We are now able to transport 14 people instead of 12, so this opens up more spots for our trips. The bus is comfortable, roomy and the air conditioning works great!

Don’t forget that every van or “bus” is not the smoothest ride when it comes to hitting bumps in the road. Hope you are able to join us on a trip and experience our new ride!

Chaffin’s Barn “Take My Wife”-Thurs., July 7 at 9:30 am. Enjoy a late breakfast/early lunch at Le Peep before we venture to Chaffin’s Barn for a hilarious comedy called “Take My Wife”. This play features apartment manager Sandra Roth whose goals are to marry off her son, run a tight apartment and involve herself in her neighbors’ problems. Movie and Shopping at Opry Mills- Fri., July 8. Stay cool and enjoy a movie at Opry Mills. You will have a few options of titles from which to choose. The times are TBD. BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee-Wed., July 13 from 10 am-12 pm. Representative Joni Hill from BlueCross BlueShield will be in our hallway passing out Medicare information and literature on fall prevention.

Walgreens Health Workshop-Wed., July 13 at 2 pm. The pharmacist and pharmacy manager from the Donelson Walgreens will be here on the 2nd Wednesday monthly covering different health topics. The first topic is about shingles and pneumonia vaccinations. Learn the importance of these immunizations and why we need to consider them as we age. Pneumococcal disease is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable illness and death in the US. These health workshops are FREE! Sign up in the office or at the volunteer desk.

McKendree Village Ice Cream Social-Fri., July 15 at 1:45 pm. McKendree Village in Hermitage has invited us to an ice cream social. This is a FREE event and will also give us a chance to see all their beautiful renovations that have been completed in the last few months. Cost for the bus is $3.

Victory Over Crime ”Personal Safety” Presentation-Mon., July 18 at 9:45 am. Learn how to make your home safer and yourself safer in public and online. Lunchbunch at Sam’s at the Cove-Tues., July 19 at 10:45 am. Enjoy the beautiful scenery overlooking the marina while eating a delicious lunch at Sam’s at the Cove in Old Hickory. Brunch at Pfunky Griddle and shopping at Gas Lamp Antiques-Wed., July 20 at 9:45 am. The customers are the cooks at the Pfunky Griddle. This family friendly restaurant provides all the toppings for your pancakes and eggs. They also have espresso and gourmet coffee. After brunch we will head to the Gas Lamp Antiques shop, one of the largest antique malls in TN. There are two huge buildings full of fine antiques, home décor, jewelry, books, vintage clothing, fine furniture, lamps, collectibles, and more! Cost for the bus is $6. Leave the center at 9:45 am. Supper Club-Thurs., July 21 at 5 pm. The dinner gang is headed to J. Alexanders on West End known for its wood-fired cuisine. Their philosophy is to provide you with the highest possible quality dining experience. The menu features a wide selection of American classics including prime rib of beef, steaks, fresh seafood, sandwiches and entrée salads. Leave the center at 5 pm. Cost for the bus is $7. Technology Fair-Fri., July 22 from 10 am-2 pm. The Nashville Public Library is hosting a Technology Fair at Donelson Station. This is FREE to everyone! Make sure to take advantage of this and learn all the different resources that the NPL has available to you. There will be different stations that you can visit to learn about social media/ Facebook, smart phones, Google, NPL databases and more! They will also hold multiple IPAD classes. There is no need to sign up, just show up.

Elder Attorney Barbara Moss-Mon., July 25 from 1-3 pm. There are six 30-minute appointments available to gain legal advice from Elder Attorney Barbara Moss. Ms. Moss can help you with Veteran’s Benefits, Medicaid/Tenncare planning, conservatorships, estate planning and probate. Appointments begin at 1 and end at 3. You must have an appointment. Lost River Cave Trip in Bowling Green, KY-Tues., July 26 at 9 am. This cave boat tour begins with a leisurely stroll in the valley as our guide shares the tale of the blue hole and disappearing Civil War soldiers. When you arrive at the cave entrance, prepare to board Kentucky’s only underground boat tour.

This hour-long tour includes a 20-minute walk to the cave entrance and a 30-minute boat ride through the cave. You MUST be physically able to do this tour. There are steps that lead down to the cave and a path that is on a 30 degree slope descending towards the cave. On the boat ride, there is an area where you must duck your head to your knees. After the boat ride we will have lunch at Mariah’s, a local favorite that serves delicious dishes including Hot Derby Brown, salads, steaks and much more! Greeting Card Class-Wed., July 27 at 1:30 pm. Join Virginia Provencher, our greeting card expert, to make some hand-made cards. Virginia brings all supplies and is happy to help you in the process. The class costs $10. You must sign up in the office or at the volunteer desk. Only ten spots are available.

Center Dinner and Concert-Thurs., July 28 at 5:15 pm. We hope everyone comes out and listens to this fantastic band and also enjoys a delicious meal prepared by the Palm Tree Café. Dance to the different decades or sit back and sing along with the hits you grew up with from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. The cost for the entertainment and dinner is $8. *REFUND POLICY ON TRIPS AND EVENTS* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed:  

    

All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance, and credit will be given to those already signed up.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time. Please remember that presenters work hard to bring education/information to the center!

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.

The Grief and Loss Group meets Sunday, June 5 at 2 pm at St. Phillips’ Church located at 85 Fairway Drive in Donelson. They also play cards the 4th Thursday monthly at Donelson Station at 9:30 am.  We welcome anyone who has a July birthday to join us for cake on Thursday, July 28 at 1 pm.

Tailgating Share a snack with the aerobics group Fridays after class! Just show up!  Join Color & Crochet on Fridays at 10 am. Bring your coloring book or crochet project and meet up with “old” and “new” friends. This is a time to talk, relax and explore your creative side. If you would like to learn to crochet, we have a couple of experienced members who will assist you.  Sing-Along Choir meets Fridays at 11 am (resuming September 9). This group has a lot of fun!

They even take their show on the road to area assisted living centers. Just show up and sing! st rd  Let’s Bowl! Join us the 1 and 3 Fridays at 2 pm at the Strike & Spare in Donelson located at 2710 Old Lebanon Rd. Shoe rental $1 and $1 per game! You can’t beat that! 
