Donelson Station’s Casino Night September 28 from 6pm-10pm Join us for a fun-filled night of Craps, Blackjack, Poker, Texas Hold ‘em, Roulette and Slot Machines. The dealers can teach beginners. If you don’t want to play, you can still win prizes!

The cost is $75 per person which includes two drink tickets (wine, mixed drink or nonalcoholic drink), live jazz entertainment from the Cliffnotes, heavy hors d’oevres and a voucher worth either $10,000 in playing chips or two tickets.

Don’t want to play? Exchange the voucher for two tickets and place them in barrels for prize drawings to be held at the end of the night. For the players, $5,000 in chips is worth another ticket for the drawings!

Bid on fabulous items at the Silent Auction, including oil changes, restaurant gift cards, wine baskets and more! All proceeds from this fundraiser will help FiftyForward Donelson Station offer our great programming and services to our members at a low cost.

Center Director Notes…

Dear Friends: With summer winding down, not only will the colors change but you’ll also notice a few changes in the Center. Tanis Westbrook resigned in August. John Martin is leaving the morning position to take a full time job. He’ll still be here Saturdays. We will be hiring a full-time Office/Volunteer Manager as well as an afternoon Theatre/Office Assistant. We hope this change will reduce staff workloads and provide better customer service to all members and guests. Please be patient while we are short-staffed.

Another change is that the Office will open at 8 am beginning September 1. The Center will still open at 7:30, but the office and phones will not be open/answered until 8.

Be aware of the construction on Donelson Pike just in front of the Center . Metro Water said they would try not to block both entrances, but it may be a bit confusing for awhile. Be careful.

Lastly, we are changing the annual fundraiser to a Casino Night on Thursday, September 28! We are excited and hope you will be too. We are looking for Silent Auction items. Let us know if you can help! We really hope to have a great crowd at this event!

Hi Friends, I hope to see you at our annual fundraiser “Casino Night” on September 28. This is a great way of giving back to the center so we can continue to keep costs to members at a minimum.

You will notice that I have not planned many trips this month. We

NEW AFEP Class-Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 am Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program Melissa Owen, our Zumba instructor, will be leading this group exercise program that is great for anyone suffering from arthritis. This class is a safe way to stay active, reduce pain, and move more easily. You will practice stretching, breathing, endurance, and balance activities tailored to your ability and skill level. This is a great class for those who need to exercise in a chair, cannot stand for long periods of time or cannot get up from the floor easily.

This class is FREE! No need to sign up, just show up! Starts Tuesday, September 12 at 11 am!

We occasionally have members want to meet the group at a destination instead of riding the bus.

Sometimes we have to cancel the trip because we do not have enough people. We need at least five people in order to make a trip happen. The bus fee helps pay for gas and upkeep.

We will now charge a $2 fee for those choosing to meet at our destination. We hope you understand this decision that was made by our membership committee and approved by the Advisory Council.

(Note: This fee does not apply if you are driving due to the bus being full).

Hong Kong Mahjong Thursdays at 10 am The Thursday morning Mahjong group is looking to add players to this Chinese game of skill using tiles. They welcome all beginners and will teach you the rules which are very similar to gin rummy. This game is great to keep your brain engaged and constantly thinking. 9/11 National Day of Service “Fill The Truck” September 11th from 11 am-2 pm FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the USO will join together on 9/11 to pay tribute and honor the memory of 9/11 victims and heroes. We need volunteers for our 3rd annual “Fill The Truck” service project. We will be stationed at the Donelson Kroger collecting nonperishable food products to give to military families in need in the Nashville area. Please let Lisa, Program Director, know if you would like to volunteer for this great cause.

Beginners and Advanced Spanish Classes Ann Thompson will once again teach both Beginner’s and Advanced Spanish Classes. Ann has taught Spanish at both Vanderbilt and Trevecca Universities.

Beginners classes are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1 pm starting Sept. 11.

Advanced classes (must have 1 year of Spanish) are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 am starting Sept. 12).

Both classes are one hour long and last for 10 weeks. You will be required to purchase a Spanish book that ranges between $10 and $15. The instructor will let you know where to purchase this book. The cost is only $20 for members for Beginner’s Spanish and $15 for the Advanced classes. Non-member cost is $40 for Beginners and $30 for the advanced class. Computer Classes with Nashville Public Library (NPL) Wednesdays September 6th to September 27th from 2-4 pm September 6 - Getting Started With Computers Learn the different types of devices, using the mouse, computer parts and keyboard. Exercises focus on the keyboard and mouse.

30-Minute Lab-Students can ask questions about their personal devices during this time.

September 13– Using NPL.Digitallearn.org Once registered on the website, students will pick a topic and take that online class. Topics include using computers, navigating websites, emailing, using Facebook and much more. Students will need to bring earbuds or earphones for this class. NPL Staff will assist students if needed.

September 20– Learning Internet Safety Learn how to protect yourself online by creating strong passwords, safeguarding passwords and recognizing secure websites.

30-Minute Lab-Open lab time for assistance with personal devices or questions.

September 27– Using NPL Resources Explore digital resources on NPL’s website including “Freegal” for music, “Hoopla” for movies/TV and “Zinio” for magazines.

60-Minute Lab-This time will be used to work on digital learning courses and individual exploration. Students may work on the topic of their choice with instructor guidance.

This class series is FREE but limited to 10 students. Sign up over the phone, in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

NMAMM Workshop - Thurs., Sept., 7 at 10 am. The National Museum of African American Music will present their one hour banjo workshop led by one of their artists. You will explore the musical history, techniques and interesting stories and facts behind the instrument. You will learn how these handmade instruments influenced the development of different musical genres like Blues, Jazz, Country, Rock & Roll, Hip-Hop and more. This is FREE! “Fill the Truck” Event in Remembrance of 9/11-Mon., Sept. 11 from 11 am-2 pm. Volunteers are needed to help us at the Donelson Kroger in collecting non-perishable food items for our local military families. Even if you can only help for an hour, we would appreciate it. Sign up for a shift with a volunteer or staff member This is a wonderful way of thanking our military men and women and supporting our local families and remembering all the victims and heroes from 9/11.

Tech Help-Tues., Sept. 12 from 10 am-12 pm. Volunteer Cheryl Harris helps members with their tech devices. Only four appointments are available, so if you sign up, please show up. Bring your laptop, iPad, tablet, iPhone or Android device with you to receive one-on-one help. Make a 30-minute appointment over the phone or in person. This is a FREE service for members.

Ballroom Dancing-2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 10 am starting Tuesday, September 12. Longtime Ballroom Dance instructor, Vickie Oakes, is excited to share her passion of ballroom dancing with you.

No previous experience or partner is necessary. Learn American style dances such as the Tango, Waltz Rumba and more. The cost is $10 per class paid directly to the instructor. Sign up with staff or volunteer.

Nutritionist /Dietician Bethany Thomsen will be at Donelson Station on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 10 am to discuss keeping yourself healthy through nutrition. Tour of the Gardens at Opryland Hotel-Thurs., Sept. 14 at 9:45 am. Enjoy a FREE tour of the gardens at Opryland Hotel. Housing 50,000 plants and several cascading waterways, the gardens and atrium cover nine lush indoor gardens, all designed for an incredible experience for any visitor. We will have lunch in The Cascades following the tour.

FREE Oral Cancer Sreenings-Mon., Sept. 18 at 9:30 am. Meet Dr. Tyler Holmes, the newest dentist at Huffiness Oakes Dental care located on Elm Hill Pike in Donelson. Dr. Holmes is currently accepting new patients and will be sharing details about his priority care membership plan (which individuals without dental insurance qualify). Prescription Medication and Falls-Wed., Sept. 27 at 9:45 am. We are pleased to share with you the TN State Health Insurance Assistance Program (TN SHIP) with the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability has partnered with the Belmont School of Pharmacy to provide outreach to senior centers utilizing their pharmacy students. Justin Beasley, a fourth year pharmacy student, will be presenting the topic on Prescription Medication & Falls. Falls are the leading cause of injuries among older adults 65+. Several types of drugs have been associated with an increased fall risk.

Learn about these risks and the medications associated with falls. This is FREE! Sign up in the front office or with a volunteer.

If you are new to any of these games, the dealers are happy to teach you how to play. Ballroom Dancing and 4 Tuesdays from 10 am–11 am starting September 12 th

Certified Ballroom Dance Instructor Vickie Oates teaches ballroom dancing and dance therapy to senior adults. No partner is ever needed for class. She focuses primarily on dance therapy with a holistic approach where the body, mind, and spirit are all interconnected. Learning to dance is a low-impact activity and a practical way to stay active as we age. It is stimulating both physically and mentally.

Dancing builds community, decreases isolation and fosters a sense of belonging. ● No partner or rhythm required. ● We can accommodate seated-only dancers as well.

We invite you to come to the Fifty Forward Donelson location and see how wonderful dance and music is for the soul and experience a lasting positive impact.

Vickie is a Certified Ballroom Dance Instructor and has been teaching in the senior living community for years.

The cost per class is $10 per person which is paid directly to the instructor. We MUST have 8 people each week in order for this class to happen.

Join Bethany Thomsen, a registered Dietician Nutritionist with extensive training in nutrition and wellness and a background in clinical dietetics, as she discusses nutrition and blood sugar. As a food and nutrition expert, Bethany translates scientific nutrition information into practical health advice.

We will open the bargain basement on Saturday September 9 from 8 am until 1 pm. Check out all of the great new items that have been donated.

Fall jewelry sign-ups are also that morning, so if you’re here to sign up for classes, check out all the goodies!

*TRIPS AND EVENTS POLICIES* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed:         

All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance and credit will be given to those already signed up.

If you choose to meet the bus at a destination, you will be charged $2 to offset the bus fee.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time.

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

Please note the bus departure time and arrive on time. Drivers will not wait!

There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.
