CENTER MEMBERSHIP FiftyForward Donelson Station is one of five active aging centers in Davidson County and two in Williamson County. These centers offer various programs, classes and events monthly as well as access to the center amenities.

Membership is $120 annually or $10 via monthly bank draft.

Want to volunteer? You will flip for F.L.I.P! FLIP (Friends Learning In Pairs) is an intergenerational, volunteer tutoring program under the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

Tutors work one-on-one with students in Nashville public schools once a week for two hours helping mentor, encourage and provide friendship and assistance to four students struggling in Reading and Math.

Tutors must be 55 or older and must be eager to help improve the lives of elementary school age students. Dear Friends: I hope you all plan to celebrate our 30th Annual BBQ September 23 & 24. We’ll have great sponsors, toe-tapping entertainment, terrific silent auction items, wonderful vendors and fabulous food!

Thanks to those who have purchased Pink Pigs for $25 (or Silver for $50 or Gold for $100)! These donations will help offset food costs. We still have spots available for the Craft Fair and Market.

Thanks to those who have signed up to volunteer! There are still open spots on the sheets in the lobby to volunteer with the silent auction, BBQ hut, children’s activities and Bargain Basement. We also need desserts to sell at the event. These can be homemade or store bought. It will take us all to make this a great event.

Program Director Notes….

Hi Friends, September is a busy month for the staff at FiftyForward due to our largest fundraiser of the year, the BBQ. We will NOT be having a center luncheon this month and trips will be a little scarce as we prepare for our big event. Make sure to check the volunteer sign up list that is hanging in my office window so that you can sign up for a shift. We really need help from everyone to make this event a success!

I have some great ideas for October and the weather should be getting cooler, so stay tuned for those upcoming trips. If anyone has ideas they would like to share, please come see me.

Drug Misuse Among Seniors Presentation from University of TN College of Pharmacy Students Students of UT College of Pharmacy will be here to discuss drug misuse among seniors.

Drug misuse includes increasing or decreasing your dosage without medical advice or taking two prescriptions that should never be taken together.

Many people don’t even realize they are misusing prescribed drugs. This is NOT to be confused with drug abuse which is another issue among older adults.

Make sure that you are not misusing your prescriptions by bringing a list with you to show the pharmacist and students. The pharmacist will check each prescription/ dosage and make sure that you are not misusing them.

We encourage everyone who is taking prescription drugs to take advantage of this FREE service on Wednesday, September 21st at 2 pm. Sign up in the front office or volunteer desk.

Flu Shots It has been recognized for many years that people over 65 are at greater risk of serious complications from the flu compared to younger adults because human immune defenses become weaker with age. Studies have shown that between 85% of flu-related deaths occurred in people 65 and older. The best way to prevent this from happening is to get your flu shot. Nurse practitioner Linda Byrd will be here administering flu shots on Wed., Sept. 28 from 11 am—1pm.

Phase 2 Beginner Billiard’s Lessons Phase 2 lessons begin on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 1:30 pm. The following lessons will be on Wednesdays starting Sept. 14. This is a FREE class! We had a great response for phase 1 so our expert billiard’s instructor, Randall Walker, thought we should open this up to some more folks.

Beginner’s Spanish Class Ann Thompson has a Masters Degree from the University of Florida and has taught Spanish classes at Trevecca, Vanderbilt and Tennessee State Universities. She speaks fluent Spanish and has worked with all ages.

Classes are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1 pm starting Monday, September 12 and ending Friday, November 18. The cost for 23 classes is only $30 which is less than $1.50 per class. This is a great deal, and we hope members will take full advantage.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle TN Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for senior volunteers to serve as mentors for some great kids who are elementary and middle school ages.

You will meet with them for an hour each week at their school to play games, help with their homework or simply chat with them. There are so many kids in the East Nashville community waiting for a mentor. April Jackson is a local attorney specializing in estate planning, probate, conservatorships, wills and advance care plans.

SHIP Training and Appointments Program Director Lisa Maddox and volunteer Carolyn O’Neil completed the Tennessee State Health Insurance (SHIP) Medicare training in August. They will be taking appointments in October to help members find the best Medicare plan by comparing plans, deductibles and rates using a Medicare website.

The TN SHIP program is non-biased and does not favor any particular insurance company. Members will not be told which insurance to choose, but will be given information about each plan to make a decision. Medicare’s Open Enrollment begins October 15 and ends December 7.

During this time you can make changes to your current Medicare plan. A schedule of appointments will be in October’s Depot.

SEPTEMBER TRIPS AND EVENTS Billiards Classes (Phase 2)- The first class is at 1:30pm on Tues., Sept.. 6. Then all classes will be on Wednesdays starting September 14 and ending Oct. 12. Humana Education and Cupcakes–Wed., Sept. 7 at 10:00 am. Humana will be here to educate you on the different Medicare plans available. National Day of Service-Fri., Sept. 9 from 11 am– 2 pm. Calling all volunteers!!! Donelson Station needs your help! This September marks the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Nashvillians will join together in volunteer projects to honor the memory of 9/11 victims and heroes. We will be stationed outside the Donelson Kroger collecting non-perishable food items to donate to military families. If you are willing to volunteer, sign up in the office or at the volunteer desk. We will leave the center at 10:45 am.

Spanish Classes-Starts Mon., Sept. 12 at 1 pm. Learn the basics of the Spanish language from Ann Thompson, who has taught at Vanderbilt, Trevecca and TSU. Wannabeatles Concert at The Nashville Public Library-Tues., Sept. 13. The Wannabeatles is a high energy group featuring four award-winning musicians with a passion for the songs of John, Paul, George and Ringo. United Health Care-Tues,. Sept. 13 and Wed., Sept. 28 from 10 am—12 pm. A representative from United Health Care will be in our hallway helping members who have questions about their Medicare options and plans. Stop by and get some information and ask questions. Open enrollment starts October 15, so make sure you are getting the best plan for you!

Walgreens Health Talk on Osteoporosis-Wed., Sept. 14 at 2 pm. Healthy bones matter at any age from toddlers to senior citizens. 50% of women and up to 25% of men over age 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis There are a variety of risk factors, both genetic and environmental, that determine whether a person will develop osteoporosis. Art Trunk Training– Tues., Sept. 20 at 10 am. In this training you will learn about the exhibit at The Frist Center, The Newcomb Pottery Enterprise, which is the largest presentation of Newcomb arts in more than 25 years. What began as an educational experiment in 1895 at the Newcomb College, Tulane University’s former women’s college, flourished into an opportunity for Southern women to support themselves financially during and after their training as artists. During the art trunk training you will actually be working with clay and making your own art project. This is FREE! Make sure to sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Drug Misuse Presentation-Wed., Sept. 21 at 2 pm. Brendel Hurst, a Pharmacy student at the University of TN College of Pharmacy, will be here to discuss the issue of drug misuse among seniors. After the presentation, pharmacy students and a pharmacist will review your medications and answer any questions you have. Be sure to either bring your medications with you or a list with the correct dosage. This is FREE!!! Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Greeting Card Workshop-Wed., Sept. 21 at 1:30 pm. Join Virginia Provencher and get creative making handmade greeting cards for all occasions to take home with you and send to loved ones.

Lunchbunch To Old Hickory Bistro-Tues., Sept. 27. Old Hickory Bistro is actually closed on Tuesdays BUT, they are opening their doors just for us! It’s a small restaurant that holds about 22 people. Everything is homemade and you will have the choice of breakfast or lunch. This restaurant has had the greatest reviews and we are excited to finally try it out. 15 people can ride the van and 7 are able to meet us there. Leave the center at 10:45 am. All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance, and credit will be given to those already signed up.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time. Please remember that presenters work hard to bring education/information to the center!

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.

Just show up!  Join Color & Crochet on Fridays at 10 am. Bring your coloring book or crochet project and meet up with “old” and “new” friends. This is a time to talk, relax and explore your creative side. If you would like to learn to crochet, we have a couple of experienced members who will assist you.  Sing-Along Choir meets Fridays at 11 am (resuming September 9). This group has a lot of fun!
