Donelson Fall Festival & BBQ Friday, October 17 & Saturday, October 18 Donelson Station’s BIGGEST fundraiser of the year! Mark your calendars! The BBQ has been a tradition at Donelson Station for the past 28 years! This year the event will take place in October to avoid the heat and competing events but will still feature the great traditions the community expects with a few fantastic additions! This year the Senior Center for the Arts presents the HAUNTED THEATRE Oct. 16-18 from dusk until the screaming stops!! Hip Donelson will offer shuttle service to and from the Farmer’s Market, the train station and Donelson Station. As always we’ll have live entertainment, a Craft Fair and Market with handmade or new items, a Silent Auction, children’s activities, commemorative t-shirts, great fellowship and the most scrumptious BBQ, sides, and desserts in town! We need your help to make all this happen! We need volunteers now to prepare and that weekend to make it a success. Check out the sign up sheets below the giant pig in the lobby. Spread the word and bring your friends. Talk to your favorite businesses about auction items or sponsorship. Most importantly, plan to be there!!

Center Director Notes... Friends: I love this time of year because there is so much anticipation building with the start of school, the promise of cooler weather, and the upcoming holidays. This year I now have Donelson’s Fall Festival & BBQ to look forward to as well! I’m so excited how the event is starting to take shape. This is our biggest event to raise funds to offset facility and program costs so that we can continue to provide you with a great Center!
Program Director Thanks to those have purchased Pink Pigs for $25 (or Silver or Lisa Maddox Gold ones for $50 and $100!) to offset food costs. There are lots lmaddox@fiftyforward.org of ways to help before the event including picking up silent auction items, building the haunted house, making phone calls, and distributing flyers. The weekend of the event will need volunteers in the BBQ hut, Silent Auction, children’s activities and SCA Administrator haunted house. Program Director Notes…. Greetings! I am in charge of the silent auction for the Donelson Fall Festival & BBQ in October. This is such a vital part of this fundraiser. Please help us by asking stores/restaurants/friends/family for gift certificates, new items, and services that will help us raise money to continue our exemplary programming. I have letters that you can provide to the donors. Just stop by my office! Also, is anyone interested in playing social bridge on Tuesdays or Fridays from 10am-2pm? The group needs more players, and they are willing to teach new players! Call Dede Deter (939-3661) if you have interest in playing. Bridge is a great way to make friends, keep your brain engaged and challenge your mind.

The MacAfee family and residents of Sweet Apple, Ohio, go topsy-turvy when teen idol Conrad Birdie comes to town to serenade one lucky fan before he enters the Army. MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES The Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station. Registration for fall classes will be held Sat., Sept. 13. Program/Class Information Feeling Stressed? Out of breath? Uneasy on your feet? Tai Chi is your answer! A study at Tufts Medical Center shows that Tai Chi helps seniors build strength, lowers their risk of falling, and helps reduce pain, stress, and anxiety. The combination of stress reduction and improved circulation makes Tai Chi beneficial for heart disease patients. Tai Chi in the morning and evening helps increase your oxygen flow and releases stress which leads to a good night’s sleep. Join our Tai Chi class on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm. Creative Writing Class-Begins Thursday, September 18 About the instructor…Judy Broadbent is a free-lance author and teacher and has published works in poetry anthologies and a collection of short stories based on local history. She has taught for thirty plus years in both secondary and college educational institutions. She is currently an instructor at Nossi College of Art and at Tennessee State University where she teaches English and Science courses. Her focus is on Tennessee authors and artists. This is such a great opportunity to learn creative writing from a published author. This class involves exploring your family history and developing a descriptive memoir. The class will run for 6 weeks on Thursdays from 9am –11am. The cost is $80. These classes usually start at $200, so this is a remarkable deal! Be sure to sign up in the front office.

Computer Class-MS Word 2010—Saturdays, Oct. 4-25, 9-11 am Word 2010 is a word processing application in the Microsoft Office Suite. Word allows you to easily create professional-looking documents using various themes, visual designs, formatting tools and sharing features. This class is 4 weeks, and the cost is $20 for members and $30 for non-members.
Advanced MS Word-Saturdays, Nov. 1-22, 9-11am Must have taken Basic MS Word class or have the basic concepts of Word down to participate in this advanced version of MS Word. $20 for members /$30 non-members. Sign up in the front office.
*New Art Class* Design and Composition Students are introduced to the principles of design using a variety of media as they complete projects that emphasize various aspects of composition. They will learn balance, repetition of shape, positive and negative space, focal point and the illusion of depth and motion. This will be a 10 week course beginning Wednesday, September 10 from 2pm-4pm. The cost for all 10 weeks is $110. Sign up in the front office.
TRIPS CONTINUED... Medicare Seminar with Greater Nashville Regional Council-Weds, September 17 at 9:45 am. It’s that time of year again! This fall is Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period which enables you to make changes to your existing plan. This seminar is for anyone who is currently on Medicare or who is new to the plan. This is FREE, unbiased counseling to help you understand the challenging maze of Medicare timelines. Sign up in the office. Country Music Hall of Fame Museum and Studio B Tour–Thurs., Sept. 18 at 12:15 pm. The museum tour consists of historic country music that spans over two centuries. This museum identifies and preserves the evolving history and traditions of country music. Studio B is the Historic RCA Studio recording home of popular music titans such as Elvis Presley, Chet Atkins, Eddy Arnold, and the Everly Brothers. The cost of both tours and the van is $37.50. FLIP Volunteers Needed Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) is seeking volunteers 55 and older to tutor students in reading at these Donelson area schools: McGavock Elementary, Pennington Elementary and Hickman Elementary. Tutors are also needed for Hermitage, Madison and East Nashville elementary schools. Tutors spend two hours a week during school hours tutoring at a school near their homes.
