CENTER MEMBERSHIP

FiftyForward Donelson Station is one of five active aging centers in Davidson County and two in Williamson County. These centers offer various programs, classes and events monthly as well as access to the center amenities.

Membership is $120 annually or $10 via monthly bank draft.

Membership at Donelson Station also allows you to access most of the other centers. Check out the Forward Focus magazine in the center or www.fiftyforward.org for other center information.

Want to volunteer? You will flip for F.L.I.P! FLIP (Friends Learning In Pairs) is an intergenerational, volunteer tutoring program under the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Tutors work one-on-one with students in Nashville public schools once a week for two hours helping mentor, encourage and provide friendship and assistance to four students struggling in Reading and Math.

Dear Friends: Thanks to everyone who came out in the crazy September heatwave for the Fall Festival & BBQ! The event was a great one because of the members and volunteers who put so much into it!

Thank you to everyone who purchased paper pigs, donated drinks and worked the event! I especially want to thank James Cunningham, David Kattau and Virginia Silva for collecting Silent Auction items. Virginia Doak and her Bargain Basement crew did an amazing job and surpassed past sale totals! Thanks to Janice, Lisa and Charlie Cardwell for working the cash register.

As always, the BBQ brigade was lead by Larry Keeton with Brad Kamer and Stan Bailey making sure everything was cooked to perfection. An extra big thanks to Brad for being on site and working with the volunteers and Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.

Hi Friends, Well, we made it through another BBQ, so I have no excuse about planning more trips. I think you will see that October is jampacked with lots of trips and presentations. I am hoping that the weather stays cooler during our travels. I appreciate those who have given trip suggestions, and I hope to receive more as the holidays are approaching.

Make sure to come and support Donelson Station in our softball game against Madison Station on Friday Oct. 21 at 10 am. If you would like to play in the game, come see me! We had a great time at our last game and appreciate the Donelson Civitan for the use of their field and their grills.

Lunch and Learn Drug Misuse Among Seniors Presentation from University of TN College of Pharmacy Students Wed., Oct. 26 at 1 pm Students of UT College of Pharmacy will be here to discuss drug misuse among seniors. Drug misuse includes increasing or decreasing your dosage without medical advice or taking two prescriptions that should never be taken together. Many people don’t even realize they are misusing prescribed drugs. This is NOT to be confused with drug abuse which is another issue among older adults.

Make sure that you are not misusing your prescriptions by bringing a list with you to show the pharmacist and students. The pharmacist will check each prescription/ dosage and make sure that you are not misusing them.

Abe Lincoln Portrayal Historian, Whit McMahan, shares the story of Abraham Lincoln’s humble beginnings and philosophy of life as he rose to save the nation. Legal Concerns and Basic Estate Planning Seminar Do you have everything in order in case something happens to you?

SHIP Training and Appointments Make an appointment with a SHIP (TN State Health Insurance Program) coordinator on October 18 from 1pm-4pm.

There are only 6 appointments available so make sure to sign up fast. The SHIP representative will compare Medicare plans by using a website that compares different rates and deductibles.

The TN SHIP program is non-biased and does not favor any particular insurance company. Members will not be told which insurance to choose, but will be given information about each plan to make a decision. Medicare’s Open Enrollment begins October 15 and ends December 7.

During this time you can make changes to your current Medicare plan.

Spring Hill Funeral Home Seminar-Wed., Oct. 5 at 9:45 am. Springhill Funeral Home will be offering a FREE informational seminar about the 25 documents you need and 72 decisions you must make before you die; Veteran’s benefits; handling a death while traveling; why you don’t want your children to make your arrangements; why insurance should not be used for purchasing burial needs; how to transfer a loved one out of state; how to transfer out of state burial property to TN; advanced funeral planning (burial and cremation options); and trust vs. insurance funding. Tour of The Lotz House and Lunch at Puckett’s Boat House–Thurs., Oct. 6. The Lotz House is Franklin's #1 historic location specifically concerning the Battle of Franklin. Mr. Lotz was a master wood carpenter from Germany and built the home as his showcase. The family survived the five bloodiest hours of the entire Civil War taking place in their front yard and then rebuilt their home and lives. Enjoy a one hour long guided tour through the house telling the detailed story of what happened during those five bloody hours of the battle and more in depth about the Lotz family. Ukulele Lessons-Fridays at 10 am starting Oct. 7 and ending Nov. 18. Learn to play the Ukulele for FREE! Burt Kowrach (the ukulele player from our talent show) is willing to share his expertise and the basics of playing the Ukulele with others. Homestead Manor and H Clark Distillery Tour – Fri., Oct. 14. Situated on 50 acres of land in Thompson Station, Homestead Manor offers a fresh farm-to-fork dining experience. Their seasonal menu uses only fresh produce from their on-site organic garden. Enjoy soups, salads, pasta dishes, sandwiches and brick oven pizzas. After lunch we will tour the H Clark Distillery which is the first legal distillery in Williamson County in over 100 years. The tour is FREE and the tastings are $7. Leave the center at 10:15 am. Pet community Center-Sat., Oct. 15 from 9 am—1 pm. The Pet Community Center offers low cost vaccinations, flea and tick medications, heartworm treatments and more. No appointment needed, just show up!

They will be in our parking lot from 10 am-1 pm.

SHIP Appointments-Tues., Oct. 18 from 1-4 pm. Will Harrison from the Tennessee State Health Insurance Program will be here helping members compare different plans/costs for Medicare recipients. There is no bias towards any insurance company. This will only show you the different plans, deductibles and costs. You will be able to sign up or change your Medicare plan that day.

Make sure to take advantage of this opportunity. You MUST sign up for an appointment with the front office or the volunteer desk. Each appointment is 30 minutes (last appointment at 3:30 pm).

Greeting Card Workshop-Thurs., Oct. 20 at 1:30 pm. Virginia Provencher (our favorite greeting card creator) presents another class in making hand made greeting cards. The class is $10 and that includes all of the supplies. Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Donelson Station vs. Madison Station Softball Game-Fri., Oct. 21 at 10 am.

Everyone is welcome to come and cheer us on at our 2nd softball game this year against Madison Station. If you are interested in playing, see Program Director Lisa Maddox. We will be playing at the Donelson Civitan field located at 241 Downeymeade Dr., Nashville TN, 37214. After the game enjoy a delicious lunch from The Donelson Café . Lunch will be hamburgers on the grill with chips, a drink and dessert for only $7.

All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance, and credit will be given to those already signed up.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time. Please remember that presenters work hard to bring education/information to the center!

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

Please note the bus departure time and arrive on time. Drivers will not wait!

There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.

Just show up!  Join Color & Crochet on Fridays at 10 am. Bring your coloring book or crochet project and meet up with “old” and “new” friends. This is a time to talk, relax and explore your creative side. If you would like to learn to crochet, we have a couple of experienced members who will assist you.  Sing-Along Choir meets Fridays at 11 am. This group has a lot of fun! They even take their show on the road to area assisted living centers. Just show up and sing! st rd  Let’s Bowl! Join us the 1 and 3 Fridays at 2 pm at the Strike & Spare in Donelson located at 2710 Old Lebanon Rd. Shoe rental $1 and $1 per game! You can’t beat that! 
