Senior Prom Friday, May 18 from 7-9 pm Get your dancing shoes out! We are going back in time rockin’ to music from the 70’s, an era that was about love and peace. Come dressed up in your version of 70’s attire. This was such a fun event last year. Hors d’oeuvres will be served by The Donelson Café. You may BYOB. We will have soft drinks available. Everyone is welcome. Invite your friends and family. The cost is $10 and includes your food and soft drinks. Sign up with a volunteer or staff member.

Walgreens Health Presentation Wednesday, May 9 at 2 pm Walgreens has just received the NEW Shingles shot (Shingrix), which is two shots and more effective than the old shingles shot (Zostavax). As most of us already know, shingles can be very debilitating and can reoccur over and over again. Anyone who has ever had chicken pox can get shingles. Important facts: 3 in 1 people will get shingles in their lifetime, this shingles shot is more effective than the previous shot, it is covered by most insurance plans (including Medicare part D), and it is recommended to all people age 50 and over. Come and learn more about this on May 9 at 2 pm. If you are interested in receiving the shots, you can sign up for an appointment and leave a copy of your insurance card. Walgreens will be back on May 23 and June 13 at 2 pm to administer the shots.

Will Drafting/Powers of Attorney Appointments Attorney April Jackson with Graceful Aging Legal Services, PLLC is providing simple wills and powers of attorney for healthcare and finances for Donelson Station members on May 24 from 9:15 until 3:30 pm. The cost is based upon which services you choose and your monthly household income. You MUST fill out a an Estate Planning Questionnaire and Representation Agreement and return it with your payment no later than May 11 or your appointment will be given to the next person on the waiting list. You will pick up and sign your completed documents on June 28 at the same time as your appointment time on May 24. You will need to have two witnesses and a photo ID to the signing. Cost ranges from $40-$120 for Wills and $10-$30 for powers of attorney. Sign up with a staff member or a volunteer. A list of income ranges will be available to determine your cost. “Annie” is based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip “Little SCA Administrator Orphan Annie.” Music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin and book by Thomas Meehan. Senior Center for The Arts at The Larry Keeton Theatre

MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station. Classes include silversmithing, faceting, lapidary, wire-wrapping, basic stone carving, delft clay casting, chain maille and many 1-2 day workshops. Art Classes We will have two one-day art classes this month. Kara Williamson, who specializes in portrait drawing, will be teaching both classes. Our first two-hour class will be a canvas painting class on Monday May 14 from 3 pm–5 pm. Kara will teach you each step in this painting process. We will have a sample of the finished product in the front lobby. This class is $25 and includes all materials. Kara will also teach a self portrait painting class on Monday, May 21 from 3 pm - 5 pm. You will need to bring a mirror, sketch pad, pencils and erasers with you. The cost for this class is only $10. You do not need to have any artistic ability to do either of these classes. All of Us Research Program

National Launch Sunday, May 6 from 2-5 pm There is still room on the bus to travel to FiftyForward Madison Station for the National Launch of the new All of Us Research Program! This FREE, fun-filled day will feature Lelan Statom as emcee, food trucks, outdoor entertainment, vendors, free food for members and door prizes! A speakers’ program will also take place at 3 p.m. inside and will be live streamed on the internet! Donelson Station members can attend via our bus for FREE! We will leave Donelson Station at 1:30 pm. Learn about this innovated program that will change the face of healthcare!!

Pet Community Center Saturday, May 12 from 9 am-1 pm The Pet Community Center’s mobile unit will be in our upper parking lot offering convenient and lowcost services for your pets. Take advantage of vaccinations and flea/tick preventative for cats and dogs as well as microchips and heartworm tests. You will only pay $15 per vaccine for the following: rabies vaccine (both cats and dogs), Canine Distemper/Parvo vaccines, Canine Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccine, feline FVRCP (upper respiratory/”feline distemper”). Microchips are $15 and include FREE lifetime registration. Heartworm tests are $15 and with results in 10 minutes. Flea/ tick preventatives range from $6-$10 per monthly dose depending your pet’s weight. No appointment needed. It is first come first serve. Make a 30-minute appointment over the phone or in person. This is a FREE service for members. Brains and Balance Class-Wed., May 2 at 11 am. Angie Rixham, McKendree Village fitness instructor, will teach her Brains and Balance class this month and let us know if it will continue after this class. Studies have shown that when you increase cognitive ability, it increases your balance; and when you increase balance, it increases your cognitive ability. We also know that we should train our brain just like we train our muscles with progressive resistance and overload. This FREE class will alternate between brain drills and balance activities and is for anybody who is interested.

Our next stop will be to the Gas Lamp Antiques and the Gas Lamp Too where you will be able to browse through over a hundred booths. The cost for the bus is $6. Leave the center at 10 am. Pet Community Center-Sat., May 12 from 9 am-1 pm. The Pet Community Center Mobile Unit will be in our parking lot providing you with low cost vaccinations for your dog or cat, microchips, heartworm tests and flea and tick preventatives. TRIPS/EVENTS CONTINUED... Painting Canvas Class-Mon., May 14 at 3 pm. Kara Williamson, a very talented local portrait artist, will teach you how to paint step-by-step a beautiful picture on canvas. Members have enjoyed doing this and are always amazed at their finished product. A sample of the picture you will be painting will be in the front lobby. The cost for the canvas and all supplies is $25. Sign up with a staff member or a volunteer. Mystery Lunch-Tues., May 15. Join us as we head to an undisclosed location for a delicious lunch. Are you struggling with healthy eating, exercising or reducing stress? Lisa Maddox and volunteer Charles Wilcox have been taking classes with the TN SHIP Program and are now able to help members with their plans and basic knowledge of Medicare. If you would like to do a plan comparison to see which plan would be your best fit or have basic questions about Medicare, sign up for a FREE appointment with a staff member or volunteer. Music For Seniors-Thurs., May 17 at 3 pm. Donelson Station will be the host for the next Music For Senior’s FREE performance starring the R&B, Soul and Jazz Richard Griffin Quartet. Space is limited because this is open to all centers so sign up quickly with staff or volunteer.

Tour and Lunch at Mt. Olivet Cemetery-Fri., May 18. Join us for a tour and learn the history of Mt. Olivet Cemetery. This 206 acre Cemetery was established by Adrian Van Sinderen Lindsley and John Buddeke in 1856.[ It was modeled after the Mount Auburn Cemetery and is very rich in history and burials. Senior Prom-Fri., May 18 at 7 pm. Break out your 70’s attire and join us for a great night of music, fellowship and dancing to some oldies but goodies. Make an appointment to see a licensed physical therapist from Rehab ETC where he will perform a complimentary screening and determine the most effective treatment for your condition. Here are a few conditions they can treat: chronic pain, back pain, TMJ, muscle tendonitis, neck pain, plantar fasciitis, headaches, rotator cuff impingement, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel, sciatica and muscle strains. Appointments can be made with a staff member or volunteer.

Great for beginners or those with mobility issues.  Low Impact Aerobics on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:45 am  Arthritis Foundation Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 am—seated class  Qi Gong Class on Mondays at 9:45 am—great for improving balance.  Tai Chi on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm—great for improving balance.  Chair Yoga on Fridays at 10 am Moderate—You will breathe harder but can still carry on a conversation. You may sweat.  Zumba Gold on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:15 pm.  Beginner’s Strength Training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3 pm.  Yoga with Richard on Wednesdays at 7:45 am  Line Dancing on Wednesdays at 9:30 am.  Walking Club on Fridays at 8:15 am—good for all levels; walkers choose the intensity High—Breathing becomes more rapid making it difficult to talk. Hop on the Big Pink Bus as Sheri Lynn and Brenda Kay Jugg dish the old stories on your favorite polyester, double-knit, sequined country music legends. You'll ride past storied institutions like the Ryman Auditorium, stop for souvenirs at the Country Music Hall of Fame, then take a quick spin on legendary Music Row before returning to the Farmer’s Market. The cost for the bus and tour is $40. We will leave the center at 10:15 am. Please note, this is NOT for the easily offended!

Supper Club-Thurs., May 24. Volunteer, Amanda, is headed to Edley’s BBQ in East Nashville. Enjoy shrimp, brisket, and catfish tacos, fried pickles, BBW nachos and so much more! Dinner cost ranges from $7-$12, depending on your order. Leave the center at 5 pm. The cost for the bus is $7. Sign up with a staff member or volunteer. Nashville Flea Market-Fri., May 25. The Nashville Flea Market at The Fairgrounds Nashville is considered one of the top ten flea markets in the country. Approximately 800 to 1200 dealers and vendors from 30 states offer their wares to the buying public every month. There are a few places to have lunch located on the Fairgrounds, which will be on your own time. We will leave the center at 9:45 am. The cost for the bus is $5. Sign up with a staff member or volunteer. NPT’s Aging Matters Screening “Loneliness & Isolation”-Wed., May 30. Research has shown that social isolation and loneliness can be as dangerous to your health as smoking or obesity. The next edition of Aging Matters will explore how growing older can be an isolating experience and the difference between isolation and FEELING isolated or lonely. This is a FREE screening and includes lunch. No bus fee. Leave the center at 10:30 am. Lunchbunch-Thurs., March 31. The lunchbunch gang is headed to Milk and Honey in The Gulch. This eclectic restaurant has tons of salads, deli board sandwiches, and lots of appetizers to choose from. Leave the center at 10:45 am. The cost for the bus is $6.

*TRIPS AND EVENTS POLICIES* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed:  All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance and credit will be given to those already signed up.  If you choose to meet the bus at a destination, you will be charged $2 to offset the bus fee. This fee does not apply if the bus if full.  When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time.  If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.  A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited unless someone takes your place from the waiting list or by someone you recruit.  Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.  Please note the bus departure time and arrive on time. Drivers will not wait!  There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.  Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.
