Senior Prom Fri., May 19 from 7 pm - 9 pm “Dance Through the Decades” Get out your prom attire and dance to music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s with local favorite Exit 219 on our stage singing music that will bring back lots of memories. Bring a date or come stag!

Everyone is welcome.

Walk With Ease Program Monday, April 3 to Friday, May 12 The Arthritis Foundation’s six-week Walk With Ease Program helps reduce the pain and discomfort of arthritis while building confidence in your ability to be physically active. Plus, walking is an activity almost anyone can do!

Our group will meet three times a week: Mondays and Wednesdays: Meet Center Director Angela in the front lobby at 9:30 am to walk around the building for at least 30 minutes.

Fridays: Meet Program Director Lisa Maddox at the Kohl’s trailhead greenway at 8:15 am and walk for approximately 60 minutes.

Our first meeting will be on Monday, May 1 at 9:30 am. This is FREE! Please join us!

CENTER MEMBERSHIP FiftyForward Donelson Station is one of five active aging centers in Davidson County and two in Williamson County. These centers offer various programs, classes and events monthly as well as access to the center amenities.

Center Director Notes…

Dear Friends: May is Older Americans Month and the 2017 theme is Aging Out Loud. It reminds me of the Dylan Thomas poem: Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

How are you “Aging Out Loud” or letting your rage be heard?

There are so many ways: be an active member of the community by attending community or government meetings and knowing the issues, by joining Leadership Donelson-Hermitage’s M3 group, by learning a new skill or trying something for the first time, or by volunteering to do something about which you are passionate. Opportunities abound at the center and nearby.

Thanks to everyone who supported the Pancake Breakfast, Plant Sale and Bargain Basement. We raised $1,700 with your help!

MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station. To be added to the Constant Contact email list, email John Martin at classes@mtgms.org.

Classes include silversmithing, faceting, lapidary, wire-wrapping, basic stone carving, delft clay casting, chain maille and many 1-2 day workshops. Discounted prices range from $10 to $25 per class to FiftyForward members.

Pet Portrait Drawing Classes meet from 3 pm-5 pm starting May 8 and ending July 3 Freelance portrait artist, Kara Williamson, will be leading this 8-week course on pet/ animal portrait drawing. You will be utilizing the grid method as your principle, and you will also be diving into specific topics each week, such as anatomy of the animal, fur technique, adding captions, and refreshing on drawing basics such as scale and observation skills. You will receive individual instruction and guidance while you work on your personal project. This 8-week course is $80 for members and $100 for nonmembers. Computer Classes with Nashville Public Library (NPL) Wednesdays May 3rd to 24th from 2-4 pm May 3- Getting Started with Computers Learn the different types of devices, using the mouse, computer parts and keyboard. Exercises focus on the keyboard and mouse.

30-Minute Lab-Students can ask questions about their personal devices during this time.

May 10- Getting Started with NPL.Digitallearn.org Once registered on the website, students will pick a topic and take that online class. Topics include using computers, navigating websites, emailing, using Facebook and much more. Students will need to bring earbuds or earphones for this class. NPL Staff will assist students if needed.

May 17- Getting Started with Internet Safety Learn how to protect yourself online by creating strong passwords, safeguarding passwords and recognizing secure websites.

30-Minute Lab-Open lab time for assistance with personal devices or questions.

May 24- Getting Started with NPL Resources Explore digital resources on NPL’s website including “Freegal” for music, “Hoopla” for movies/TV and “Zinio” for magazines.

60-Minute Lab-This time will be used to work on digital learning courses and individual exploration. Students may work on the topic of their choice with instructor guidance.

Tech Help-Tues., May 2 from 10 am-12 pm. Volunteer, Cheryl Harris, will help members with their technological devices. There are only four appointments available, so if you sign up, please show up. Bring your laptop, IPAD, tablet, IPhone or Android device with you to receive one-on-one help. Make an appointment on the phone, in the office or at the volunteer desk.

Appointments are only 30 minutes each. Please be courteous of others, and do not go over your allotted time. This is a FREE service.

Senior Prom Committee-Wed., May 3 1:30 pm. Help plan our Senior Prom to be held May 19. We need creative people with decorating ideas and input. All are welcome to join us!

Bledsoe Creek Hike-Fri., May 5. Enjoy a beautiful, moderate three mile trail located near Castilian Springs. You MUST endure the entire three miles and climb steep hills. Leave center at 8:30 am. Cost for the bus is $6. Sign up with staff or volunteer in person or by phone.

Pet Community Center-Sat. May 6 from 9 am-1 pm. Pet Community Center’s Mobile Unit will be in our parking lot offering services for $15 or less.

Vaccinations, micro chipping, flea and tick treatment and heartworm medication are all available. No appointments. Just show up with your leashed pet.

Sounds Game-Sun., May 7. Join us as we watch the Nashville Sounds play the El Paso Chihuahuas. This annual trip is super fun, and the seats are covered and in the shade. The cost for the van, ticket and parking is $26. Leave the center at 1 pm. Sign up with staff or a volunteer.

Shadowbrook Castle Tour and Lunch-Tues., May 9. Clara Davenport, Shadowbrook owner, goes above and beyond to make your visit to her home special. Enjoy touring this castle-like home located in Joelton, TN. The homemade lunch made by Clara is always delicious. The cost for the bus, lunch and tour is $32. Leave the center at 10:15 am. Walgreens Monthly Health Talk -Wed., May 10 at 2 pm. The Walgreens pharmacist will discuss stress relief in older adults. Learn the best ways to manage and relieve your stress. This is FREE! Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Mystery Lunch-Thurs., May 11. Travel to an undisclosed location for a delicious lunch.

Estate Sale Shopping-Fri., May 12. We always enjoy visiting different estate sales in the Nashville area. We will pick two locations after sales are released Thursday evening. The cost for the bus is $6. Leave the center at 9:45 am. Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

SCA’s Fringe and Foolery Fundraiser-Sat., May 13 at 6:30 pm. Support our theatre by attending “Fringe and Foolery” a costumed carnival fundraiser. The VIP Party ($65) starts at 6:30 pm with signature cocktails, priority silent auction bidding, specialty hors d’oeuvres and a magical show performed by the Translucent Café Cabaret. General Admission ($40) opens at 8 pm with more bidding, cocktails and specialty food available while you enjoy the soulful sounds of Nashville favorite, Jonell Mosser. TN Agricultural Museum-Wed., May 17. The TN Agricultural Museum, located on the spacious grounds of the Ellington Agricultural Center, has an extensive collection of home and farm artifacts from the 19th and 20th centuries. Exhibited in a renovated plantation barn, the museum features textiles, a woodworking collection, blacksmith shop, wagons and large equipment such as a jumbo steam engine. We will also get to watch a spinning wheel demonstration. We will have lunch at the Back To Cuba Café. Leave the center at 9:30 am. Cost for the bus and tour is $8.

Lunch & Learn-Thurs., May 18 at 10 am. Join Ragen Martin from Allstate and learn key facts about Social Security including how benefits are calculated, receiving benefits while working, full retirement age and choosing the right time to file, provisional income and tax implications and options for spouses and ex-spouses. Greeting Card Class-Fri., May 19 at 1 pm. Our crafty member, Virginia Provencher, will teach you to make handmade greeting cards for family and friends. The class is $10 for and includes all of the supplies. Sign up with staff or a volunteer. Space is limited to 8 people.

Victory Over Crime “Personal Safety” Presentation-Tues., May 23 at 10 am. Join the FiftyForward Victory over Crime team to learn how to increase your personal safety at home, in public, online, as well as physically as the season heats up. You will learn how to be safe in the parking lot, while you travel, and on social media. Learn resources how to get help if you or someone is a victim of a crime. Tailgating Share a snack with the aerobics group Fridays after class! Just show up!  Sing-Along Choir meets Fridays at 11 am. Have fun singing old songs and hymns. Join us the 1 and 3 Fridays at 2 pm at the Strike & Spare in Donelson located at 2710 Old Lebanon Rd. Shoe rental $1 and $1 per game! *TRIPS AND EVENTS POLICIES* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed:        

All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance and credit will be given to those already signed up.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time.

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

Please note the bus departure time and arrive on time. Drivers will not wait!

There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.

615 Rocks!-Wed., May 24 at 11 am. Try the newest trend of rock painting that began in 2015 in Memphis and is now taking over Nashville. The concept is simple: paint a rock and share with others! After creating a unique rock, you then hide it in public for someone to find and be surprised. This is FREE!! Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Parkinson’s Recap-Thurs. May 25 at 10:30 am. Kathy Johnson-Warner will be recapping the series she presented over the last three months on Parkinson’s. She will share available resources and answer any questions you have. This is FREE. Sign up with staff or a volunteer.

Supper Club-Thurs., May 25. Venture out to Sam’s at The Cove located at the Old Hickory Lake Marina. Their vast menu includes a bit of everything. Enjoy burgers, fish tacos, fried catfish, pizzas and so much more! Leave the center at 5pm. Cost for the bus is $7.

Flea Market at the Fairgrounds-Fri., May 26. More than 800 vendors from 30 states offer their wares every month. Merchandise includes antique furniture, décor, specialty foods, boutique clothing, carpets, health and beauty items, jewelry, perfume, leather goods, yard art and more. We will have lunch at Smokin’ Thighs with options like chicken salads, wings, chicken sandwiches, loaded chicken nachos and their pimento mac and cheese. This cost for the bus is $6. Putt-Putt Golf and Lunch at Courtney’s-Wed., May 31. Enjoy the outdoors and play puttputt golf at Cedar Creek Sports Center in Mt. Juliet. A single game is $6 per person, which you will pay directly to them. You can also try out their batting cages or even take a go-kart ride. We will have lunch afterwards at Courtney’s, which is a fabulous meat and three. Their Wednesday specials are fried chicken, jambalaya, lasagna and country fried steak. The cost for the bus is $6.
