We are so excited to welcome back Eddie Kilgallon for our June Center Lunch on June 28 at 11 am. Eddie is the keyboardist for the multi-platinum duo Montgomery Gentry. In 1997 he wrote the famous George Strait song, “One Night At A Time” and was later signed with BMG music.

CENTER MEMBERSHIP FiftyForward Donelson Station is one of five active aging centers in Davidson County and two in Williamson County. These centers offer various programs, classes and events monthly as well as access to the center amenities.

Membership is $120 annually or $10 via monthly bank draft. We also accept Silver&Fit® and Silver Sneakers® reimbursement through some Medicare supplement plans. Check to see if you’re eligible.

Dear Friends: June is going to be a busy month! Lisa has planned lots of great programs and trips that I hope you will enjoy. We do need your help with several items this month. 

Watch out for an opportunity to help us get funding from Metro Nashville. FiftyForward’s five Davidson County centers do not receive any local government support. Most other statewide centers get support from their local governments for the services they provide their older citizens. We will let you know if we need you to speak to your council leaders or others.



Support the center through the Matching Campaign. Any donations made before June 30th will be matched by a generous donor. Our membership fees simply aren’t enough to pay for staff, building and amenities. We need your help.

Summer is here! I want everyone to start thinking about what they are going to do in our talent show that we will be having this September (date TBD). We had so much fun last year, and if you missed the act that James Cunningham and I did, don’t worry because we will be back on stage with another surprise.

Make sure that you read about the new activity charge that will be applied if you decide not to ride the bus and, instead, meet us on a trip. If you have any questions about it, come see me.

Cooking with Kevin Tuesday, June 27 at 2 pm Chef Kevin Miehlke from The Donelson Café will be sharing his recipes for three summer salads.

You will be making the salads with Kevin and also get to eat all three. The cost is $8.

We have occasionally had members want to meet the group at a destination instead of riding the bus.

Sometimes we have to cancel the trip because we do not have enough people. We need at least five people in order to make a trip happen. The bus fee helps pay for gas and upkeep.

We will now charge a $2 fee for those meeting at our destination. We hope you understand this decision that was made by our membership committee and approved by the Advisory Council.

Piecing Hearts Together.

June 21 at 2 pm $10/person Join Heather and LeeAnn from Piecing Hearts Together to make sun catchers using sea glass on beautifully framed glass. All of the supplies and tools will be provided.

They will bring an assortment of templates to help you with your design-birds, flowers, dragonflies and more. You don’t have to be an artist! If you can glue it, you can do it!

Senior Center for The Arts at The Larry Keeton Theatre

MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station. To be added to the Constant Contact email list, email John Martin at classes@mtgms.org.

Classes include silversmithing, faceting, lapidary, wire-wrapping, basic stone carving, delft clay casting, chain maille and many 1-2 day workshops. Discounted prices range from $10 to $25 per class to FiftyForward members.

Opportunity Now Opportunity NOW is a coordinated initiative launched by Mayor Megan Barry to provide young people in Davidson County access to employment. In Nashville, we have seen fewer and fewer teenagers and young adults working during the summers and after-school. At the same time, Nashville employers across various industries are concerned about the lack of “soft” skills among their youngest employees—skills most readily learned through actual work experience.

FiftyForward Donelson Station will be accepting two high school interns for a six-week program. Manal Farag, a rising Junior at Antioch High School, will be helping in the office gaining important phone, customer service and documentation skills. Nia Buntin, a recent graduate of Martin Luther King, Jr., will be working individually with members on their technology needs. This will help her in learning how to work cooperatively with others, how to manage her time and how to understand a customer’s needs.

We hope you will help us in welcoming Manal and Nia to FiftyForward Donelson Station, and please feel free to talk to them about their experience and what we can all do to help them prepare to succeed in the “real world”!

iPad Classes with Nashville Public Library (NPL) Wednesdays June 14 to July 5 from 2-4 pm June 14 Getting Started with Your iPad This class will give you an overview of the iPad tablet. Topics will include the different parts of the tablet, how to access Wi-Fi and access basic app. The class will consist of hands on exercises with iPad Tablets.

June 21 - Connecting Wi-Fi and using the Internet with your iPad Using an iPad device learn how to connect to different Wi-Fi signals, how to navigate the internet, and use search engines to find information and internet terminology.

June 28– Using Apps with your iPad Part 1 This class will explore the build in Apps on the iPad and ways the Apps can help you in everyday life.

July 5 Using Apps with your iPad Part 2 This class will explore the “ App Store,” search for apps, download an app, open an app and delete an app.

These classes are FREE but limited to 12 students. This is not a series. You must sign up for each class. You can sign up for all classes! Sign up over the phone, in the office or at the volunteer desk.

Don’t have an iPad? No worries! NPL will provide one for the class.

This is a great way to try it out before you buy one!

Pool Tournament-Tues., June 6 at 9:30 am. Donelson Station welcomes Madison Station for an Alabama 8-ball pool tournament. There will be a professional referee to enforce the rules. The cost per person is $10 and includes lunch. There is only room for 8 players from each center so make sure to sign up quickly with a volunteer or staff member.

Tech Help-Tues., June 6 from 10 am-12 pm. Volunteer, Cheryl Harris, will help members with their tech devices. There are only four appointments available, so if you sign up, please show up. Bring your laptop, IPAD, tablet, IPhone or Android device with you to receive one-onone help. Make a 30 minute appointment over the phone, in the office or at the volunteer desk.

Please be courteous and don’t go over your allotted time. This is a FREE service for members.

Estate Planning and Probate Presentation-Wed., June 7 at 1 pm. Attorney Lea Johnson will discuss Wills and the Probate Process. Join us to learn about what a will can and cannot do, what happens when a person passes away without a will, when probate is required and when probate can be avoided, and other related issues. The class will begin at 1:00 pm and will wrap up by 2:30 pm. Make sure to reserve your spot with a volunteer or staff member. This is FREE! China Light Display at the Fairgrounds and Dinner at Smokin’ Thighs-Thurs., June 8.

Artisans from Sichuan Tianyu, a company in Zigong, China have been working on the components needed to create 35 brilliantly lit displays that will illuminate the Fairgrounds. Check out this fabulous exhibit including a massive 120’ dragon and a stunning wall of flowers. We will have dinner before we view the lanterns at Smokin’ Thighs where you can enjoy every type of smoked chicken and their famous pimento mac and cheese. Leave the center at 5 pm. Cost for the bus and your ticket is $17. Sign up with a staff member or volunteer.

Blue Heron Cruise and Lunch at Riverview Marina-Wed., June 14. This is a favorite on our list of activities. Join Capt. Jim Steele, a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain, for a scenic nature cruise as the pontoon glides past waterfront homes and through 30,000 acres of wildlife in Ashland City. Snacks, drinks and a restroom are on board. We will have lunch at the Riverview Marina, famous for their fried catfish. The cost for the boat ride and bus is $20. Leave the center at 9 am. Walgreens Monthly Talk -Wed., June 14 at 2 pm. The Walgreens store manager will be here to explain the Walgreen’s photo kiosk. He/She will share all of the services the photo department has to offer. This has been requested by many who attend their monthly health talks. This FREE! Sign up with staff or a volunteer.

Deloitte Technology Day-Thurs., June 15 10 am - 1 pm. We welcome back volunteers from Deloitte for their annual technology Impact Day. Professionals will be on site in our hallway to help you with your technology questions. Bring your device (phone, laptop, tablet, etc.) with you to gain a better understanding of how it works. This is FREE! No appointment necessary.

The Basement Marketplace and OK Corral-Fri., June 16. Shop the many booths for accessories, clothing, gifts and novelty items at the Basement Marketplace in Old Hickory. We will have lunch at the El OK Corral Mexican restaurant after we shop. Leave the center at 9:45 am. Cost for the bus is $6. Sign up with a volunteer or a staff member.

Lunchbunch-Tues., June 20. We are headed to P.F. Chang’s in Franklin. Enjoy their famous lettuce wraps, lots of gluten free options, lunch wok classics and California sushi rolls.

Return of Wills/Powers of Attorney/Medical Directives-Wed., June 21 at 9 am Attorney Marshall Snyder will return all documents. No appointment needed. If you met with Mr. Snyder back in April, be sure that you pick up your completed documents.

New Member Meet and Greet-Wed., June 21 at 10 am. We welcome all new members to come and mingle with class leaders, advisory council and staff. Light refreshments will be served. Be sure to let us know if you can make it by signing up with a volunteer or staff.

Name That Tune with Humana –Wed., June 21 at 1:30 pm. Join Juan Beraldi from Humana for some fun playing “Name that Tune”. Stick around after bingo and win more prizes! Everyone is invited. This is FREE!!! Sign up with a staff member or volunteer.

“Piecing Hearts Together” Wed., June 21 at 2 pm. Join Heather from this Nashville based non-profit dedicated to providing healing art sessions. You will make a beautiful mosaic sun catcher. The cost is $10. Sign up with a volunteer or staff. A sample craft is in the front lobby.

Supper Club-Thurs., June 22. This month we head to Hermitage Steakhouse. Be sure to ride the bus with the others so that we can make this trip happen. Mystery Lunch- Fri., June 23. Join the fun and travel to an undisclosed location for a delicious lunch with the gang. Cost for the bus is $5. Leave the center at 10:45 am.

Center Lunch-Wed., June 28 at 11 am. We are so excited to have Eddie K. back on our stage with his Songs and Stories show. Eddie has performed many times here and always puts on a great show. The Donelson Café will prepare a delicious lunch too. The cost is $8. Sign up in the front office or with a volunteer.

Trivia Night at Homegrown Taproom-Thurs., June 29. Join in on the fun at a local Donelson hot spot, which sources all products from farmers, growers, artisans, and brewers in and around Nashville. Their menu of munchies, soups, salads and sandwiches are a salute to your favorite home-cooked meal. We will have dinner and then play some trivia at 8 pm.

Leave the center at 7 pm and return by 10 pm. There’s no cost for the bus.

Brushstrokes– Fri., June 30 at 1 pm. We will be painting on canvas with the artist from brushstrokes in our art room at Donelson Station. This is such fun! You do not have to be an artist to participate. The artist will instruct you during each step. We will have a sample of the painting in the front lobby. The cost is $25 and includes all of the supplies.

Pool tournaments will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am.  Our Digital Camera Club, Computer Club and IPAD/Tablet groups welcome all interested.

Just show up with your gadgets! Groups meet the 2nd and 3rd Tuesdays monthly at 10 am. th  Caregiver Support Group meets on the 4 Tuesday monthly at 6:30 pm. Debbie Riley, MSW will return as leader this month! Please let any caregivers you know about this group, and let us know if you will be attending and if you need someone to sit with your loved one.  BookTalk will meet Wednesday, July 19 at 2 pm. The Hermitage Librarian discusses and shares her insight on books she has read. rd  Summit Audiology will be here the 3 Wednesday of every month from 1:15 pm-3 pm. All hearing tests are FREE! Make an appointment today for June 21.  The Grief and Loss Group meets Sunday, June 4 at 2 pm at St. Phillips’ Church located at 85 Fairway Dr. They also play cards the 4th Thursday monthly at Donelson Station at 9:30 am.

Tailgating Share snacks with the aerobics group Fridays after class! 9:30 am.  Sing-Along Choir meets Fridays at 11 am. Have fun singing old songs and hymns. Join us the 1 and 3 Fridays at 2 pm at the Strike & Spare in Donelson located at 2710 Old Lebanon Rd. Shoe rental $1 and $1 per game! Disaster Drill We will have a tornado drill on Thursday, June 15 at 2 pm. We will announce that there is a tornado in the area, and everyone will go into the hallways away from windows and doors.

This is an annual requirement through our funders.

*TRIPS AND EVENTS POLICIES* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed:         

All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance and credit will be given to those already signed up. *New* If you choose to meet the bus at a destination, you will be charged $2 to offset the bus fee.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time.

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

Please note the bus departure time and arrive on time. Drivers will not wait!

There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.
