Music For Seniors Red White and Bluegrass Tuesday, July 25 at 2 pm Music for Seniors connects area musicians with older adults through live and interactive music programs designed to engage, entertain and educate seniors. Back by popular demand, Donelson Station welcomes Red White and Bluegrass to our stage. Don’t miss this performance featuring Mark Barnett, Kathy Chiavola and Craig Duncan singing great harmonies and performing on banjo, guitar, fiddle, and mandolin. Center Luncheon Wednesday, July 26 at 11 am Kenzie Wetz will perform at our July center lunch. Kenzie’s home base is the Grand Ole Opry where she has played fiddle and sung background for artists including Brad Paisley, The Oakridge Boys, Pam Tillis, the late Little Jimmy Dickens and Whisperin’ Bill Anderson.

She will share her love for the oldies singing songs from Ray Charles, Jimmy Dickens and the Mamas and the Papas.

CENTER MEMBERSHIP FiftyForward Donelson Station is one of five active aging centers in Davidson County and two in Williamson County. These centers offer various programs, classes and events monthly as well as access to the center amenities.

Membership is $120 annually or $10 via monthly bank draft. We also accept Silver&Fit® and Silver Sneakers® reimbursement through some Medicare supplement plans. Check to see if you’re eligible.

Thanks to everyone who has given to this year’s Annual Campaign which will be matched! As of this initial printing we were a little bit behind last year’s campaign that raised $9,000 for Donelson Station (before match). Please watch the display in the lobby to see the final numbers after July 1.

You will notice that July is a “lighter’ month as far as planning trips. This is due to the heat and the fact that many people are on vacation including myself.

I have scheduled a date for our talent show and decided that October would be the best fit and give people more time to get their ‘acts” together. The Talent Show will be on Wednesday, October 18 at 10 am. If you want to participate, please let me know. The first one was such a success so if you missed it, make sure to attend this years performance.

Nashville Public Television NPT will be launching NPT3 PBS Kids, a 24/7 children’s channel dedicated to educational programming. We have occasionally had members want to meet the group at a destination instead of riding the bus.

Sometimes we have to cancel the trip because we do not have enough people. We need at least five people in order to make a trip happen. The bus fee helps pay for gas and upkeep.

We will now charge a $2 fee for those meeting at our destination. We hope you understand this decision that was made by our membership committee and approved by the Advisory Council.

Jamie London With Music and lyrics by country music legend Roger Miller and SCA Administrator book by William Hauptman, Big River is a rip roaring musical adventure based on Mark Twain’s classic1884 novel 615-231-1231 Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It features music in the jlondon@fiftyforward.org bluegrass and country styles and has remained an immensely www.thelarrykeetontheatre.org popular show since its 1985 Broadway debut.

Senior Center for The Arts at The Larry Keeton Theatre

MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station. To be added to the Constant Contact email list, email John Martin at classes@mtgms.org.

Classes include silversmithing, faceting, lapidary, wire-wrapping, basic stone carving, delft clay casting, chain maille and many 1-2 day workshops. Discounted prices range from $10 to $25 per class to FiftyForward members.

Flower Power Brigade FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Interested in volunteering? Love making people smile? The RSVP Flower Power Brigade is a new volunteer opportunity to recycle, arrange and deliver flowers to individuals served by FiftyForward programs, centers and partners. What a difference flowers can make to these individuals.

FiftyForward RSVP is recruiting volunteers to pick-up floral donations from 9 am-11am.

Volunteers are also needed from 1 pm to 3 pm to prepare the flowers in simple arrangements which will be delivered by the volunteers that serve clients of the Heimerdinger Foundation-Meals 4 Health and healing, FiftyForward Meals on Wheels and FiftyForward Bordeaux Center.

Volunteer shifts are on the first three Tuesdays of each month. The program is scheduled to begin service in August 2017. iPad Classes with Nashville Public Library (NPL) Wednesdays June 14 to July 5 from 2-4 pm July 5 -12 Ways being online can Improve your life using your IPad-Class.

This class will use the IPad device to explore a few of the websites found in the “12 Ways Being Online Can Improve Your Life” booklet provided by NPL. July 12 - Helpful everyday Apps for Seniors. Explore everyday topics that interest and help seniors. From that we will explore, download and review applicable apps.

July 19- AARP, Medicare, Social Security and Senior Related Websites. Navigate to AARP to learn about the information available for seniors. Additionally, the class will explore several links to this website including the Medicare and Social Security links. If time allows there will be other internet searches for additional senior related websites.

July 26-Library Resources. The class will explore various areas and databases located on the library.nashville.org website.

August 2-Fun with our iPad. This class will look at some fun things seniors can do with their iPad. Possibilities are social media, games, sports related apps, and hobby related apps.

Seniors should know about these apps as they provide not only entertainment but help to keep their minds sharper. This in turn helps with their health.

These classes are FREE but limited to 10 students. Please sign up for each individual class.

Students from previous classes can attend as there will be different content. Don’t have an iPad? No worries! NPL will provide one for the class. Try it before you buy it! Sign up for classes over the phone, in the office or at the volunteer desk.

Movie at Rutland Place-Thurs., July 6. Join us for a movie at Rutland Place in Mt. Juliet. This independent living facility has its very own theatre, and we get the entire room to ourselves. They supply popcorn, candy and water. This is always so much fun! The movie is TBD. We will call everyone who has signed up with the different titles of movies that are available. The one with the most votes wins. Leave the center at 12:30 pm. Cost for the bus is $5. Sign up with a volunteer, staff member or over the phone.

Tech Help-Tues., July 11 from 10 am-12 pm. Volunteer, Cheryl Harris, will help members with their tech devices. There are only four appointments available, so if you sign up, please show up. Bring your laptop, IPAD, tablet, iPhone or Android device with you to receive one-on-one help. Make a 30-minute appointment over the phone, in the office or at the volunteer desk. Please be courteous and don’t go over your allotted time.

This is a FREE service for members.

Mystery Lunch-Tues., July 11. Join the fun and travel to an undisclosed location for a delicious lunch with friends. Cost for the bus is $5. Leave the center at 10:45 am.

Walgreens Monthly Talk-Wed., July 12 at 2 pm. (rescheduled from June) The Walgreens store manager will be here to explain the Walgreen’s photo kiosk. Learn all the services the photo department has to offer. This has been requested by many who attend their monthly health talks. This is FREE! Sign up with staff or a volunteer.

Lunchbunch-Thurs., July 13. Lunchbunch this month will be at the Pharmacy located in East Nashville. The Pharmacy uses 100% Tennessee-raised beef and is known for its legendary burgers and toppings. You can also order chicken, bratwurst, jagerwurst, kielbasa and more! Try a milkshake from the soda shop. Cost for the bus is $6. Leave the center at 10:45 am. Plaza Mariachi-Fri., July 14. Enjoy a cultural experience with a unique blend of art, music, entertainment, food, services and retail in one location. It begins with décor in the style of traditional marketplace streets from old Mexico and weaves Latin culture into a walk of history. You’ll hear Hispanic music, see Latin relics, discover old and new Mexico in food, fashion and so much more. We will shop and have lunch at one of the many restaurants located inside the building. Humana Presentation– Wed., July 19 at 10 am. Humana representative, Juan Beraldi, will be hear to discuss Medicare options for the upcoming open enrollment starting in October. Find out how Medicare savings and extra help programs can assist you with your Medicare prescription drug costs. If you have any questions or concerns about Medicare enrollment, be sure to attend. Come check out the great shops on Music Valley Drive and then have lunch at Santa Fe. The Tacky turtle is a vintage marketplace with home décor, repurposed furniture antiques, gifts, boutique items and snackery. Music Valley antiques has more than 30 vendors with fair prices and the Village Arts Company has unique local crafts and handmade goods. We will leave the center at 9:45 am. Music For Seniors “Red White & Bluegrass”-Tues., July 25 at 2 pm. Don’t miss this FREE concert on our stage featuring an independence day celebration with a bluegrass twist. Space is limited so sign up quickly with a volunteer or staff.

Center Luncheon-Wed., July 26 at 11 am. Nashville musician, singer, songwriter and fiddle player, Kenzie Wetz, will be performing on our stage playing some old favorites. Kenzie has sung backup for many Grand Ole Opry members and even appeared as an ongoing actor on ABC’s “Nashville”. The cost for the concert and the lunch is $8. Sunset Cruise on The Blue Heron-Wed., July 26. Come aboard The Blue Heron pontoon boat for a relaxing sunset cruise. Enjoy the scenery as the boat glides past waterfront homes and through 30,000 acres of wildlife. The cost for the bus and the cruise is $20. We will have an early dinner at 4 pm at the Riverview Marina. Leave the center at 3 pm. Sign up with a volunteer or staff member.

Supper Club-Thurs., July 27. Two army soldiers that were deployed in Bavaria and fell in love with the culture, its food and especially the beer decided to open Bavarian Bierhaus in their hometown of Nashville. Enjoy the following appetizers: bier cheese fries, brats in a blanket, Reuben rolls and so much more. Dinner consists of different wursts, schnitzels, signature dishes include fish & chips, Oktoberfest chicken, shweinbraten and more. Leave the center at 5 pm. Cost for the bus is $6. Want to volunteer? You will flip for F.L.I.P! FiftyForward Friends Learning In Pairs (FLIP) is an intergenerational, volunteer tutoring program under FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Tutors work one-on-one with students in Nashville public schools once a week for two hours helping mentor, encourage and provide friendship and assistance to four students struggling in Reading and Math.

*TRIPS AND EVENTS POLICIES* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed:         

All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance and credit will be given to those already signed up. *New* If you choose to meet the bus at a destination, you will be charged $2 to offset the bus fee.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time.

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

Please note the bus departure time and arrive on time. Drivers will not wait!

There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.
