Center Director Notes...

Another season is upon us. Summer brings vacations, hot weather and fun! It may slow us, but it will not stop us. You will notice some changes in the office this summer. James Cunningham will be out for a while. We will miss him, and I will stay in contact with him.

Meanwhile, Joe will be working the morning shift and Daniel Keeton, whom many of you know from his volunteering with us, will work Joe’s afternoon shift as a temporary/part-time FiftyForward employee.

Again, thanks to all who contributed to FiftyForward’s matching campaign. As of June 13, Donelson Station had raised the most money of all the Centers! Thank you! Your support is appreciated immensely.

FiftyForward’s Board has approved the 2014-15 budget. At the meeting, Donelson Station was highlighted as having the largest increase in membership this year! We are so happy to see new and returning members. Please, please let us know any ideas you have to improve your center!

Greetings!

July is already here! Happy July 4th! Hope you all are enjoying vacations, sunshine and family this summer. Just a few changes to keep in mind. Water aerobics at McKendree Village starts at 9 am going forward on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Their open swim has changed to 10am immediately following the water aerobics class. This works out great for those of you who like to participate in both activities.

Remember, that if you would like to join my strength class, I ask that you make an appointment with me before you begin this class. Sing-along, Tai Chi, line dancing, and art classes are on break for the summer. Let me know if you have interests in other classes that are not listed in this newsletter. We always welcome volunteer teachers and invite you to share your ideas.

Senior Center For The Arts/The Larry Keeton Theatre

MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES The Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station. There are still spots available this summer. If you would like to be added to the constant contact email list., send a request to John Martin at classes@mtgms.org. For more information on classes visit their website at www.mtgms.org.

Classes include silversmithing, faceting, lapidary, wire-wrapping, basic stone carving, delft clay casting, chain maille, and many 1-2 day workshops. Discounted prices range from $10 to $25 per class if you are a member of FiftyForward. See the insert page for a list of classes.

Computer Classes– Weekdays Photo Transfer Class: Tuesday, July 15 (one day class) at 9 am. The class will end when each person is finished transferring photos. This session will show participants how to transfer photos from emails, smart phones and cameras to a flash drive, and to their computers for storage, backup up and printing. Students will need to take notes. There are no handouts; each device and software is unique.

Make sure to bring the following items to class: Cell phone with photos, the cable that connects your cell phone to your computer, camera and its SD card (if it has one), plus any cables that came with the camera. The photo software CD, a flash drive (sometimes called a jump drive, a USB drive, or a stick) to contain your pictures.

Make sure you know your email address and password.

The cost for this class is $20.00 for members and $40.00 for non-members. Sign up in the front office.

PhotoBook Class: Thursday, July 17 (one day class) 9 am-12 pm. This session will teach participants how to create a book of photographs online. A sample is available in the front office for your viewing. Our project will be a 4x6 book.

Make sure to bring the following items to class: A flash drive, a CD, a DVD , or a camera containing photos you want to place in a photo book. A credit/debit card to use online to pay for the photo book (approx. cost is $10.00). The photobook will be mailed to you in about a week.

Cost is $20 for members/$40 for non-members.

Computer Classes– Saturdays Basic Word Processing: Mondays, August 2-23, 10 am-noon. During this 4-class session, students will learn an overview of the tool bar and pull down menus, creating a new document, typing and formatting, selecting, copying, cutting, pasting, adjusting margins, adding special effects to a type, changing fonts, sizes, styles, inserting, saving and printing.

Basic Computer Skills: Saturdays, July 5-26, 9-11am. For those just starting to use computers. Learn the basics and feel more comfortable using your PC. Pinterest– Saturdays, Aug. 2-23, 9-11am. Pinterest is a visual discovery tool to collect ideas for different projects and interests. People create and share collections (“boards”) of visual bookmarks (“pins”) that they use to do things like plan trips and projects, organize events or save articles and recipes. Sign up in the front office.
