Center Luncheon Wednesday, January 24 at 11 am We have a special treat this month for all of you! Get ready to laugh your head off with stand-up comedian Faye Woodroof who is known as the sassiest and naughtiest grandma in America. She was the HBO Comic Relief II Champion headliner and is dubbed the “Grandmother from Hell.” She travels all over the United Stated performing in shows. She is now a member of FiftyForward Donelson Station, and we hear other members are enjoying her humor. Her show is NOT for the easily offended. Enjoy a delicious lunch from the Donelson Café. Weight Watchers Returns!

Tuesdays at 5 pm Weight Watchers is back at FiftyForward Donelson Station and will meet every Tuesday evening at 5 pm. The weigh-in begins at 5 pm followed by the educational meeting. This is a simple program, based on science, that will help you lose weight.

Start out the New Year right and have total freedom with your food choices. They have over 200 foods that you do not have to portion or track. There is no need to sign up for this, just show up! You will pay Weight Watchers directly. This is a great way to hold you accountable each week at each weigh-in.

Center Director Notes…

Dear Friends: I hope your holidays were wonderful and you are planning to make 2018 a great year! I want to thank each of you for your support of Donelson Station in 2017. Whether you volunteer, donate items or funds, participate in a few programs or participate in all; you are what make this center grow and continue to be a second home to nearly 900 members!! That’s incredible!

We work hard to offer a variety of programming that will appeal to different people. As part of our funding, we are required to offer educational programs and presentations. We always try to make these free when possible. However, we are often having to either cancel these due to members not showing up after signing up or have them with only a few people. Please carefully consider whether you will be able to attend a class or event before you sign up.

Our building is very old and is sometimes difficult to keep warm.

Please feel free to adjust the temperature within reason in a room while you are using it as long as everyone in the room is okay with the adjustment. However, please return the temperature to a Office/Volunteer Managers normal 68-70 degree setting when you leave. “West Side Story” Concert Version

Senior Center for The Arts at The Larry Keeton Theatre

MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station. To be added to the Constant Contact email list, email John Martin at classes@mtgms.org.

Classes include silversmithing, faceting, lapidary, wire-wrapping, basic stone carving, delft clay casting, chain maille and many 1-2 day workshops. Discounted prices range from $10 to $25 per class to FiftyForward members.

Spanish Classes Ann Thompson has taught Spanish classes at Vanderbilt and Trevecca University and will be teaching Advanced and Beginner’s classes here once again.

Beginner’s Spanish will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1 pm. The classes will start on Wednesday January 3 and run for 10 weeks.

Advanced Spanish classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 am. Those classes will start on Tuesday, January 2 and run for 10 weeks. The cost is $20 for the Beginner’s class and $15 for the Advanced class. You must have at least one year of Spanish in order to be in the advanced class. You will also need to purchase a Spanish book that runs about $10-$15. The instructor will tell you where you can purchase this. Sign up with a volunteer or staff member in person or over the phone.

Elder Law Attorney, Jennifer Hunt, will be here to discuss estate planning including Wills, Trusts, Estate Tax, Health Care Proxies and Durable Powers of Attorney. Jennifer understands that inherent difficulties of caring for aging relatives. She wants to provide families with the peace and comfort in knowing their loved ones will be provided for during life’s unfortunate events. This is a FREE seminar. Author Presentation –Wed., Jan. 17 at 10 am. Kaye Newton is a Brentwood author who recently published Incision Decisions, which is an insider’s guide to navigating a hospital stay, surgery and recovery. She wrote this book after going through major operations and helping her mother with her hip and knee replacements. People go through many physical and emotional challenges after surgery and she wrote this book to help others manage issues that doctors may not directly address such “anesthesia brain’, the post-operative blues and how to manage recovery at home. Cooking with Chef Kevin-Fri., Jan 26 at 3 pm. Chef Kevin from The Donelson Café will teach us how to make some simple winter comfort meals. He will provide recipes and show you step-by-step how to make these delicious dishes. Everyone gets to taste the end product. The cost for this is $8. Jimmy Stewart Band-Sat., Jan 27 at 7:30 pm. Enjoy a night of Bluegrass music with The Jimmy Stewart Band in our auditorium. Bring your own food/beverages. McKay’s and Lunch at Red Robin-Tues., Jan. 30 at 9:30 am. Get ready to browse through two floors of gently used books, cds, movies, games and more. Oasis Center “Gender identity”–Wed., Jan. 31 at 9:45 am. When you hear the word “Transgender”, do you find yourself saying “I don’t get it!” or “What exactly is transgender”? Well, on January 31st we have an opportunity for you to find the answers to your questions. We will be offering a workshop on “Gender 101” which will provide you with the foundational information to help you better understand transgender identity and how to support people who are transgender.

All questions are welcome during this session and encouraged by the facilitators. Your workshop facilitators for this workshop will be Pamela Sheffer and Page Regan from the Oasis Center. This is FREE!!! Sign up in the with a staff member or a volunteer.

January 1- NO programming. The center will be closed for New Years Day. Weigh Watchers will be meeting on Tuesday evenings at 5 pm.  Book Club meets Jan. 22 at 10:30 am to discuss “ The Help” by Kathryn Stockett.  Advanced Spanish Classes start Tuesday, January 2 at 9 am.  Beginner’s Spanish Classes start Wednesday, January 3 at 1 pm.  Texas Hold ‘Em is on Tuesdays at 4 pm. We NEED players!  Beginners Art Classes start Tuesday, January 9 at 9 am.  Advanced Art Classes start Wednesday, January 10 at 9 am. rd  Pool tournaments will be held on the 3 Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am.  Mah Jong meets Thursdays at 10 am and can take a few more players. Grief and Loss Group meets the 1st Sunday at 2 pm at St. Phillips’ Church, 85 Fairway Dr. They play cards the 4th Thursday at Donelson Station at 9:30 am.  Members with a January Birthday are invited to join us for cake on Thursday, January 25 at 1 pm sponsored by Senior Helpers and Wilson Bank and Trust.  

Exercise Classes for All Intensity Levels and Abilities Low—Low or no impact exercise. Great for beginners or those with mobility issues.  Low Impact Aerobics on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:45 am  Arthritis Foundation Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 am—seated class  Qi Gong Class on Mondays at 9:45 am—great for improving balance.  Tai Chi on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm—great for improving balance.  Chair Yoga on Fridays at 10 am Moderate—You will breathe harder but can still carry on a conversation. You may sweat.  Zumba Gold on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:15 pm.  Beginner’s Strength Training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3 pm.  Yoga with Richard on Wednesdays at 7:45 am  Line Dancing on Wednesdays at 9:30 am.  Walking Club on Fridays at 8:15 am—good for all levels; walkers choose the intensity High—Breathing becomes more rapid making it difficult to talk. You will sweat.  Advance Strength Training on Tuesdays/Thursdays at 8:15 am or Saturdays at 9:15 am.

Cooking With Kevin We all know that Chef Kevin from The Donelson Café makes delicious food. Well, you will have a chance to watch him whip up some of his favorite winter dishes. He will show you step-by-step which ingredients he is using and will also share the recipes with you. We did this last year and had so much fun together. The cost is $8 which includes your plate of food that you receive at the end of the cooking demonstration. Sign up with a staff member or volunteer.

*TRIPS AND EVENTS POLICIES* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed:         

All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance and credit will be given to those already signed up.

If you choose to meet the bus at a destination, you will be charged $2 to offset the bus fee. This fee does not apply if the bus if full.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time.

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

Please note the bus departure time and arrive on time. Drivers will not wait!

There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.
