January Center Luncheon Wednesday, January 25 at 11 am We are kicking January off with entertainment from Mark Edwards who will be performing songs from the era of the “Rat Pack.” Enjoy songs made popular by Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Mark’s voice spurred four Top 50 records in 1991, and he entertains for the ages by playing acoustic guitar. Probate is the official proving of a will to establish validity. Attorney, Lea Johnson, will be teaching a FREE probate class where you will learn the following:
A Seat at the Table (ASATT) is a program developed as part of a larger initiative called Our Muslim Neighbor with the goal to create safe venues for thoughtful conversation among neighbors. ASATT is an informal but intentional conversation around dinner that is facilitated to encourage dialogue between people of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds. Participants are encouraged to share about their day-to-day lives, learn about their neighbor, and dispel misinformation and stereotypes.
What is probate? How does the probate process work? Does all property have to go through probate when a person dies? Who is responsible for handling probate? Should I plan to avoid probate? Ms. Johnson is trained in elder law, estate planning and probate law. She was named Nashville Community Education’s 2016 instructor of the year. She worked for the Legal Aid Society before starting her own law practice. Take advantage of this FREE class and sign up with staff or a volunteer.

These centers offer various programs, classes and events monthly as well as access to the center amenities. Membership is $120 annually or $10 via monthly bank draft. Center Director Notes… Dear Friends: Here comes 2017! January is always an exciting time to think back on the accomplishments of the past year and forward to the opportunities the new year presents. I want to thank each of you for all your support of Donelson Station in 2016. You are the reason the staff works hard each and every day to offer the wonderful programs, classes and events. You make our work fun! Many thanks to everyone who supported the Benefit Concert in December. The funds raised will be used to purchase new computers for members to use in the Computer Lab. A special thanks to Dan Curtis to making the concert an spectacular event! It’s with great sadness that I announce Katie Blancett has decided to not return to her Morning Office Manager position. She will stay at home with baby for now. We hope she will keep in contact and possibly help in the office if needed. We will miss her! Program Director Notes…. Hi Friends, Happy New Year! 2017 will mark my tenth year with FiftyForward. I can’t believe how time flies. With that being said, we would like to celebrate our long-time members who have been with FiftyForward for 20 years or more by inviting them to a small reception with cake and punch on Tuesday, January 31 at 2 pm. Let the front office know if you can attend. January and February planning can be tough due to the weather. So, I will probably wait until March to do any trips that involve purchasing a ticket. Taxes AARP Tax appointments will start Wednesday, February 1 from 9 am until 1 pm. AARP volunteers will be onsite to help you fill out your taxes. This is a FREE service open to the public. We will be accepting donations for offering this service and the utilization of our space. We will start taking appointments on January 23. You can call to schedule an appointment or stop by our front office.
Inclement Weather

In the event that we experience inclement weather our policy will be as follows: FiftyForward Donelson Station will remain open during inclement weather unless state offices close. In the event that the Davidson County schools are closed, all center programming will be cancelled. Again, however, the center will remain open. The Center Director can use her discretion as to whether the center should be closed early, thereby allowing members and staff extra time to get home safely. If the Davidson County schools are closed for an extended period of time. The Center Director has the discretion to resume center programming before the school systems return. When in doubt, call the center for updates before visiting!
Mahjong is a popular game that started in China and requires skill, strategy and calculation. We will be starting the Hong Kong version of Mahjong on Thursday, January 12 at 10 am. This does require a 4-week commitment and our volunteer, Suzette Sutton, will be happy to teach you this game. You do not have to have any experience. If you are interested in playing you must sign up in the front office. We do need at least four players to make this happen.
Chair Massages During January and February, massage therapist, Valerie Dennison, will only be here on the 3rd Thursday (January 19 and February 16) from 10 am - 12 pm. The cost is $1 per minute, The minimum appointment is 15 minutes. You can make an appointment at the front desk. Valerie has an ergonomically designed chair that allows you to fully relax while receiving massage treatments to the head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands and back area.
Beginner’s Spanish and Advanced Spanish Classes Ann Thompson taught Spanish at Vanderbilt and Trevecca University. She is fluent in Spanish and enjoys sharing her love of the language. The Beginner’s Spanish class starts Monday, January 9 at 1 pm. The classes will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for ten weeks. The cost is $20. Ann will also be teaching an advanced class for those who have taken her beginners class or have had a year of Spanish lessons. The advanced class starts Tuesday, January 10 at 9 am. The classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays for ten weeks. The cost is $15 Take advantage of these low-cost classes from a very experienced teacher.
JANUARY TRIPS AND EVENTS Country Dance World Championships-Fri., Jan. 6. “ Music City” hosts the 25th annual Country Dance World Championships at Gaylord Opryland Resort with dancers and spectators visiting from all over North America, Europe and Asia. We will have lunch at The Claim Jumper at Opry Mills before heading to the hotel. We leave the center at 11 am and will return by 4:30 pm. The cost for the van is $6. Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk. News Channel 5 Tour-Mon., Jan. 9. Tour News Channel 5 with “ Talk of the Town’s” very own Tuwanda Coleman. This is a FREE tour. You must be able to walk the distance. The tour takes about one hour and includes two studios, the control room where the newscasts are produced and the newsroom where the reporters, anchors, Talk of the Town, sports and editing are located. We will leave the center at 12:45 pm. The cost for the van is $6. (We will NOT be having lunch, so make sure you eat before you arrive). Tech Help –Thurs., Jan. 12 from 9 am—11 am. Experimac in Mt. Juliet provides FREE one-on-one tech help to our members for 30 minute sessions. Bring your laptop, tablet, IPAD or cellular device with you. Lane Motor Museum features 150 unique cars and motorcycles and is home to the largest European vehicle collection in the U.S. The vehicles date from the 1920’s up until today and are from Europe, South America and Asia. All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance and credit will be given to those already signed up. When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time. Please remember that presenters work hard to bring education to the center! If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip. A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/ event, you must find someone to take your place. Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips. Please note the bus departure time and arrive on time. Drivers will not wait! There are no cash refunds for any trips/events. Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.
