FOOD DONATIONS-SECOND HARVEST

LIONS CLUB The Lions Club has a yellow bin located on the front porch that collects usable prescription eye glasses to recycle.

Recycling Newspaper, magazines and copy paper can be recycled in the bins at the railroad side of the building to help the center earn money.

Bin is located in the front lobby. The Food Bank needs the following non-perishable foods:     

Canned meals (stew, chili, soup) Tuna and canned meat/vegetables Peanut butter Canned foods with pop-top lids Low-sugar cereals/100% boxed fruit juices

Inclement Weather Policy Even though it’s only November, there is always the possibility of inclement weather.

Please note: If Metro schools are closed, we will NOT have our regular daytime programming, classes, events or scheduled trips. However, our office will still open, although possibly on a delayed schedule. The center will typically only close if the state offices are closed.

What is your Big Why? I heard this question at the screening of NPT’s Aging Matters at the Knowles Center, and it stuck with me.

Why do we get up in the morning? Why do we leave the house?

What in our lives keeps us going? For some, it’s family, friends or helping others. Staying active and fit is the Why for many others.

Happy New Year! I'm so excited for 2016! We have some great trips and events for January. As we enter into this New Year, I ask you to think about “new” things that you would like to do or accomplish. We are always looking for FiftyForward “firsts” and would love to hear your ideas.

Each year it seems everyone is always committing to a healthier lifestyle. Start your year off right by attending the presentation by Dr. Dixon on Tuesday, January 12. He will aid you in the nutrition process and teach you the right way to go about becoming a healthier you. Of course, committing to a weekly exercise class is always a good choice too! Strive Collegiate Academy Volunteer Opportunity Volunteer opportunities are available at Strive Collegiate Academy in Donelson. Strive is a newly formed Charter School serving 5th grade in the Donelson community. Strive is seeking volunteers to assist with their after-school programming on Wednesdays from 3-5 pm.

Volunteers will ideally be able to commit to a regular Wednesday schedule and feel comfortable working with young middle school students on reading and math activities. Strive staff will provide guidance and materials and volunteers will be responsible for working with students in small groups or, occasionally, one-on-one.

Strive Academy and FiftyForward’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) are co-hosting two information events on Thursday, January 21. Those interested may attend at 7:30 am or 12 pm for approximately one hour information sessions to learn about the volunteer placement.

MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station.

Hands On Nashville Volunteer Work Day Luncheon-Sat., Jan. 16 (TBD).

Hands on Nashville has connected Donelson Station with a volunteer work group to do some painting projects in the building. Summit Audiology-Wed., Jan 20 from 1:15-3pm. Summit Audiology will still be here the 3rd Wednesday of each month but now in the afternoon from 1:15-3 pm. The audiologist will provide FREE hearing tests to all members. Results will be assessed and further instructions given to manage hearing and balance disorders. Sign up for an appointment.

Head Springs Depot/Lunch at Puckett's Grocery-Thurs., Jan. 21. This warehouse liquidation store in Franklin sells home items from 30-60 percent off. The inventory is mostly overstocks from Home Depot, Homedecorators.com, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Amazon, Overstock.com and Target. Center Lunch-Wed., Jan. 27 at 11 am. This is going to be a “ first” for our center lunch! We will start taking AARP Tax Appointments the LAST week of JANUARY. This service will begin the first week of February with appointments on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9 am and 1 pm. Bring your coloring book or crochet project and meet up with “old” and “new” friends. This is a time to talk, relax and explore your creative side. If you would like to learn to crochet, we have a couple of experienced members who will assist you.  Sing-Along Choir meets Fridays at 11 am. This group has a lot of fun! They even take their show on the road to assisted living centers in the area. Just show up!  Line Dancing is a FREE and FUN exercise each Wed. at 9:30 am. No experience needed!  Tai Chi is FREE! All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance, and credit will be given to those already signed up.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time. Please remember that presenters work hard to bring education/information to the center!

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place on the trip.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.
