Center Luncheon 50’s & 60’s Sock Hop Wednesday, February 14 at 11 am-1 pm Celebrate Valentine’s Day by dancing to the 50’s and 60’s and enjoying a classic 50’s style lunch. The Donelson Café will be serving cheeseburgers, onion rings and a special dessert. Get your poodle skirt out and enjoy classics from Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly and more.

We will have lunch first and start dancing at 11:45. The cost for this event is $8.

Dear Friends: FiftyForward Donelson Station is such a wonderful place to be!

I’m always amazed at how many people comment on how friendly our members are and how many activities they enjoy. This truly is a home away from home for many. I hope you take advantage of the center and enjoy all we have to offer.

Cigna HealthSpring has invited our artists to display their artwork, both canvas and jewelry, at their offices in Metro Center from February-April. As a financial supporter of FiftyForward, they want their employees to see what today’s older adults are capable of doing. We are excited for this opportunity to show off our work!

Going into February, some of you may be struggling with those new year exercise goals. Don’t give up! You can do it! Find a friend to hold you accountable and to make exercising more fun.

Don’t overdo it. Do what you can!

I hope you all can make it to our Sock Hop on Valentine’s Day, February 14. This will be so much fun and an excuse to dress like it’s the 50’s again.

Dr. Josh Denny will here March 1 to talk about Precision Medicine. I encourage all of you to attend because he’s very hard to book, and this will probably be your only chance to hear what he has to say. This is a FREE event with lunch included!

Note that we clarified the ticketed event policy. If you are unable to attend a ticketed event, you will get a credit if there is someone on the wait list to take your place or if you help us find a replacement who will pay us for your ticket. MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station. To be added to the Constant Contact email list, email John Martin at classes@mtgms.org.

Classes include silversmithing, faceting, lapidary, wire-wrapping, basic stone carving, delft clay casting, chain maille and many 1-2 day workshops. Discounted prices range from $10 to $25 per class to FiftyForward members.

Computer Classes (February & March) Sign up for these FREE classes taught by a representative from The Nashville Public Library. Tablets will be provided. Spots are limited so sign up quickly with a staff member or a volunteer.

Getting Started with a Android tablet Wed., February 7 at 2 pm.

This class you will get an overview of the Android tablet. Topics will include the different parts of the tablet, how to access Wi-Fi and access some basic apps. The class will consist of hands on exercises using library Android tablets.

Getting Started with the Internet Wed., February 14 at 2 pm.

Using a library supplied device we will learn about the internet and some of the terms related to the internet. Explore browsers and use search engines to find information on the internet.

Getting Started with Internet Safety-Class Wed., February 21 at 2 pm.

Learn how to better protect yourself online with tips for creating strong passwords, safeguarding your passwords and recognizing a secure web site.

Getting Started with Library Resources -Class Wed., February 28 at 2 pm.

This class will explore some of the many digital resources provided on the library website.

Some of the apps on the library website include “Freegal” for music, “Hoopla” for movies and TV and “RB Digital” app for magazines.

Getting Started with Email basics Wed., March 7 at 2 pm.

This is an overview of an email account. NPL will assist students in creating their own free email account and provide a look at some of the basic functions of Google’s Gmail.

Getting Started with NPL.Digitallearn.org Wed., March 14 at 2 pm.

This class will register on the NPL.Digitallearn.org website. Once registered each student will be able to pick the topic of interest and take that online class. Class topics range from using a computer, navigating a website, intro to email, intro to Facebook and much more. Each student will need to bring their own set of earbuds or earphones for this class. NPL Staff will be there to assist student if needed.

Getting Started with Social Media Wed., March 21 at 2 pm We will look at some of the different types of social media and an overview of Facebook.

12 Ways being online can Improve your life Wed., March 28 at 2 pm.

This class will use a library device to explore a few of the websites found in the “12 Ways Being Online Can Improve Your Life” booklet provided by the Nashville Library.

Trader Joes/Lunch at the Cheesecake Factory/Container Store Trip-Fri., Feb. 9. Frist Center Tour-Mon., Feb. 12. Take a self-guided tour of the Nick Cave, the featured exhibit at The Frist Center. Cave’s creations are bursting with color and texture and are optical delights that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages and backgrounds. They speak to issues of identity and social justice-specifically race, gun violence and civic responsibility. His trademark human-shaped sculptures, made from upcycled everyday materials such as buttons, plastic hair beads, old toys and domestic textiles, can be viewed as playful but began as a form of social critique. Senior Helpers Presentation on Dementia Part 1-Thurs., Feb 22 at 9:45 am. This is Part 1 of a three-part series on dementia. Kathy Johnson-Warner is an expert in Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Learn how to make your loved one’s life, and yours, much easier and more enjoyable. Learn about the beginning stages of this disease and how it affects the afflicted and the family. There are over 5.5 million people in the United States living with dementia. This is a very important topic that every senior should know more about. This is FREE! Nashville Symphony/Coffee and Classics at the Schermerhorn-Fri., Feb. 23. British pianist, Benjamin Grosvenor, joins your Nashville Symphony for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2. This early Triumph shows Beethoven moving past the influence of Mozart and forging his own original, dramatic flair. Enjoy coffee and pastries before the show opens. Leave the center at 9:15 am.

Canvas Painting-Fri., Feb. 23 at 2 pm -4:30 pm. Join professional artist Kara Williamson as she guides you through a step-by-step process on how to paint a beautiful scenic picture on canvas. You do not have to be a good artist to take this class. This is open to anyone. A copy of the painted canvas will be in our front lobby. The cost is $25 and will cover all supplies. Celebrate Black History Month-Mon., Feb. 26. February is Black History Month. We will be celebrating at the Knowles Center with a speaker from Fisk University. Donelson Cafe & Catering Hello from the kitchen! We ended 2017 doing just what we like, feeding people. From our first Give Back Feeding at Thanksgiving, which we plan making an annual event; to the many parties, holiday luncheons, open houses, and events for so many; to the people who line up daily for our daily special. It is so true that when you give, it comes back to you. We thank all of you for your support!

You have come to know that we never rest. We hit the ground running in 2018, with only a slight detour with the snow. We just held our 2nd cooking class and plan to hold them quarterly.

We are cooking up some love filled menus and fun leading up to Valentine’s Day. Watch for details and our tree of hearts!

We might even see some presidential guests during lunch.

*TRIPS AND EVENTS POLICIES* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed:  

All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance and credit will be given to those already signed up.

If you choose to meet the bus at a destination, you will be charged $2 to offset the bus fee. This fee does not apply if the bus if full.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time.

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited unless someone takes your place from the waiting list or by someone you recruit.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

Please note the bus departure time and arrive on time. Drivers will not wait!

There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.

Inclement Weather Policy If Metro schools are closed, we will NOT have our regular daytime programming, classes, events or scheduled trips. However, our office will still open, although possibly on a delayed schedule. We may restart classes before Metro reopens classes if the roads are safe.

All jewelry classes will be left to the instructor’s discretion whether to cancel class.
