Nancy’s recent CD titled, “What’s the Use in Crying” reflects the spiritual journey of her music and her life. Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk Exercise Trainer on Site Exciting news!! Please welcome Brent Weaver, Exercise Trainer, to FiftyForward Donelson Station. Brent holds a master’s degree in Biological Sciences and Exercise Physiology. His experience includes being the head strength and conditioning coach for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2002, running a cardiac rehabilitation program from 2004-2015 and acting as a personal trainer and teaching strength training and balance classes at a local senior center in Connecticut.

Brent will be at the center every Wednesday beginning Feb. 10 to assist members with their workout routines. He will work with you personally to get to know your physical limitations and what works best for your fitness routine. There will be two time slots weekly for a 30-minute session starting at 8 am and 8:30 am.

You MUST sign up for an appointment. This is a FREE service so if you sign up, please make sure that you show up. If you are a no show, you will not be able to sign up for another appointment. Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

AARP Tax Services AARP tax preparation is available starting Monday, February 1 and going through Wednesday, April 13 from 9 am until 1 pm. This is a FREE service through AARP. Be sure to bring the following: 

If you are expecting a broker’s statement, make your appointment for March or April.

CENTER MEMBERSHIP FiftyForward Donelson Station is one of five active aging centers in Davidson County and two in Williamson County. These centers offer various programs, classes and events monthly as well as access to the center amenities.

Membership is $10 per month payable annually for $120 or via a $10 monthly bank draft.

Membership at Donelson Station also allows you to access most of the other centers. Check out the Forward Focus magazine in the center or www.fiftyforward.org for other center information.

Recycling Newspaper, magazines and copy paper can be recycled in the bins at the railroad side of the building to help the center earn money.

FOOD DONATIONS-SECOND HARVEST Bin is located in the lobby. The food bank needs the following non-perishable foods:  Canned meals (stew, chili, soup)  Tuna and canned meat/vegetables  Peanut butter  Low-sugar cereals/100% boxed fruit juices

Inclement Weather Policy If Metro schools are closed, we will NOT have our regular daytime programming, classes, events or scheduled trips. However, our office will still open, although possibly on a delayed schedule. The center will typically only close if the state offices are closed.

All jewelry classes and Weight Watchers meetings will be left to the instructor’s discretion whether to cancel class or not. When in doubt, call first!

Center Director Notes….

Dear Friends: Thank you to those who have renewed your membership before it expired. To those who may have forgotten? No worries!

Remember, membership is no longer January-December. Not sure when your membership expires? Check with the staff!

FiftyForward is turning 60 this year! Look for fabulous celebrations throughout 2016 including our Feb. 18 trip to the Knowles center for a historical look at Nashville in 1956, the year we began! This is a great opportunity for FiftyForward to share all of the wonderful programs and services we are providing to Middle Tennessee.

Donelson Station continues to impact our members and community. In 2015, more than 800 members participated in more than 2,500 events and activities! That’s amazing! We also had 51 volunteers dedicate nearly 5,000 hours of time to better our center through committees, events, classes, office support, fundraisers and the Bargain Basement!

We are ever so grateful to our members and volunteers for the support you give us. We are here for you and dependent on you to keep us being the best.

Hi Friends,

I am asking for some help! We have had great success with the afternoon strength training classes. This is awesome, but we are in need of some extra dumbbells and mats. We need three and five pound sets of dumbbells, and any type of yoga or exercise mat will do. If you have these items at your home and you are not using them, we would love to have them to put to good use.

Also, as we head into spring and the weather gets warmer, I am looking for ideas for our “FiftyForward Firsts.” Other centers did adventurous activities such as zip lining. Please share your thoughts with me about this!

Meharry Students to Visit with Members Meharry 2 year medical students will be visiting Donelson Station on Wednesday, February 3 at 8:45 am. They are interested in observing and interacting with members as part of their Growth and Development class. Some may observe and participate in our low -impact aerobics group that morning and others may wander into the pool room or other exercise rooms. Feel free to chat with the students, ask questions and make them feel welcome to our center. nd

Lunch & Learn Friday, February 19 at 10:30 am Brian Donnelly from AseraCare will educate us on a topic that may affect many people as we age: hospice and palliative care. Whether you are dealing with a sick parent, grandparent or family member, you need to learn the facts about hospice care and the common myths and misconceptions that are associated with this service. Clear Captions/Summit Audiology Having trouble with your hearing? Make an appointment with Summit Audiology to have your hearing checked for FREE! They will be here on Wed., Feb. 17 at 1:15 pm.

Also, visit the Clear Captions booth set up in our hallway. They have FREE phones available to those experiencing hearing loss.

FEBRUARY TRIPS AND EVENTS Greeting Card Workshop-Wed., Feb. 3 from 1-3 pm. This group had such a great time making cards in January, that they decided to do it again! Learn to create handmade greeting cards for friends and family. Valentine’s Day, birthday, get-well and thank you cards are just a few that you will be able to create and personalize. We are headed to Hendersonville where our first stop will be the Up & Down Closet specializing in women’s plus size clothing and was voted best consignment store in Sumner County. Exercise Trainer-Wednesdays at 8 am starting Wed., Feb 10. Make an appointment with exercise physiologist, Brent Weaver. There will be two appointments each Wednesday morning starting at 8 am and 8:30 am. Brent will work with you one-on-one and figure out an exercise routine that would be best for you. This is FREE! Chaffin’s Barn and Breakfast at Le Peep-Thurs., Feb. 11. Join us for another great production at Chaffin’s Barn, “Funny Valentines.” This comedy stars an unhappy, divorced bachelor who in the end wants to win his ex-wife back. Rescheduled Trip: Head Springs Depot and Lunch at Puckett’s Grocery-Tues., Feb. 16.

This trip is rescheduled from January 21. We still have spots open, so if you were not on January’s list, feel free to sign up. This warehouse liquidation store in Franklin sells home items from 30-60 percent off. The inventory is mostly overstocks from Home Depot, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Amazon, Overstock.com and Target. They have recently added mattresses and outdoor furniture.

Candle Making Class-Thurs., Feb. 18 at 10 am. This is a “ first” for us at FiftyForward Donelson. Betty Jean, the candle making queen, has been doing this for more than 14 years and wants to share her expertise on making candles with us.

60th Anniversary Event-Thurs., Feb. 18. 2016 marks FiftyForward’s 60th anniversary. We will be having events throughout the year to celebrate this momentous occasion. Join us at the Knowles Center as we listen to famous Nashville historian and author Mr. Ridley Wills as he walks us through notable moments in Nashville’s history since the agency’s founding year.

Lunch & Learn-Fri., Feb 19 at 10:30 am. Brian Donnelly from AseraCare Hospice will discuss the challenges families face when coping with serious, chronic or life-limiting illnesses. Their mission is to address these challenges with compassion, understanding and evidence-based clinical practice. Learn more about hospice and palliative care during this FREE lunch & learn. GNRC Elder Abuse Presentation-Wed., Feb. 24 at 9:45 am. Hear Keisha Harris with Greater Nashville Regional Council discuss the different forms of elder abuse, how to recognize it and what you should do if you recognize it happening. There are different forms of elder abuse including financial exploitation, physical abuse, mental abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, abandonment and self-neglect. This is something that everyone should hear!! This is FREE! Sign up in the office or at the volunteer desk.

Supper Club -Thurs., Feb. 25. Note: Only one supper club this month! We are heading to Bonfire Japanese and Mongolian Grill in Mt. Juliet where a Hibachi chef prepares the food in front of you in the most entertaining way. Create your own stir-fry or sushi meal. Cost for the van is $7. Leave the center at 5 pm.

Support & Education Group will meet the 4th Thursday monthly at 1:30 pm. Kathy Johnson-Warner of Senior Helpers will educate and support those affected by this disease.  Couponing with Katie meets Wednesdays at 9:30 am. Bring your coupons to swap!  Join Color & Crochet on Fridays at 10 am. Bring your coloring book or crochet project and meet up with “old” and “new” friends. This is a time to talk, relax and explore your creative side. If you would like to learn to crochet, we have a couple of experienced members who will assist you.  Sing-Along Choir meets Fridays at 11 am. This group has a lot of fun! They even take their show on the road to assisted living centers in the area. Just show up!  Line Dancing is a FREE and FUN exercise each Wed. at 9:30 am. No experience needed!  Tai Chi is FREE! This class is great if you have balance issues. Join us Tuesdays at 1:30 pm.  Have you experienced the loss of a loved one? The Grief and Loss Group meets Sunday, February 7 at 2 pm at St. Phillips’ Church located at 85 Fairway Drive in Donelson. *UPDATED REFUND POLICY ON TRIPS AND EVENTS* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed:  

    

All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance, and credit will be given to those already signed up.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time. Please remember that presenters work hard to bring education/information to the center!

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place on the trip.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.
