Donelson Station’s Holiday Craft Fair and Bargain Basement Sale Sat., Dec. 8 at 9 am-4 pm Don’t miss this fun holiday tradition! Browse through all the handmade crafts that vendors will be selling in our hallway.

Our Bargain Basement is loaded with goodies and something for everyone.

Stick around and watch the Donelson/Hermitage Parade at 2 pm from our front lobby with a cup of hot cocoa. If it’s warm enough, enjoy the parade from our front porch and parking lot.

We will have hot cocoa, popcorn and drinks for sale.

The Donelson Café will serve warm comfort foods like chili, grilled cheese sandwiches, etc.

We still have tables available.

There is NO booth charge, but we ask that vendors donate 10% of sales to the center.

Stop by our front office and ask for a form.

New! On the Road Trips!

We are excited to announce NEW “On the Road” trips for our members in 2019. Program Directors from each center will be planning these day long trips. The first trip is set for Saturday March 16, 2019. The group will be traveling to the Irish Day Parade and Arts & Crafts Festival in Erin, TN. Julie Reeves from Madison Station will be taking this trip with the group and can answer any questions you may have.

On this trip there will be over 100 craft vendors and 25 food vendors, a carnival and live music. Food is available on your own while you shop and explore. The cost for the trip is $35 for members and $45 for nonmembers. A $2 bus diver tip is also required per person to be paid on the bus ride. Lunch is extra so be sure to plan for that too. You can sign up at Donelson Station for this trip. The bus will leave from Madison Station ONLY at 7:30 am. You must provide your own transportation to Madison that morning. Metro Police Christmas Charities The Metro Police Christmas Charities is a 501(C)(3) non -profit charity that has been serving Davidson County for over half a century. Families are selected based on recommendations from police officers that encounter disadvantaged families on a daily basis. The generosity from the community impacted more than 600 children last year. If you are interested in helping families in need this year, drop off NEW, UNWRAPPED toys ONLY. We have a wrapped bin located in our front lobby. The deadline to drop off presents is December 20 at 12 pm. Thank you for helping make the holiday season so special to these children in the Nashville area.

The Holidays are upon us! We have decked the halls (literally) and are planning our annual Holiday Craft Fair and Bargain Basement Sale on Saturday, December 8 from 9 am-2 pm. We hope you will come out and do some shopping with us that day.

We will soon begin utilizing a calling system to make reminder calls about trips members signed up for, to let members know about building closures or for other occasions. This will be a recorded message made by a staff member. This system will save staff and volunteer time, allowing them to focus on other tasks. We hope this will keep members and volunteers informed.

Lastly, we have reach 1,000 members!! Our center is well-known for its friendly members and fun activities. Thank you to all members, volunteers and especially the hard working staff who make Donelson Station great. We will celebrate at our New Member Meet and Greet on Wed., Dec. 12. Join us!

I would like to thank all of our dedicated volunteers who donated their time and energy into helping our center with fundraisers, projects, assisting the front office, making phone calls, teaching classes, helping with the gardening, working the Bargain Basement and so much more this year. Each of you help make a difference at Donelson Station and our membership keeps growing because of you.

As the holidays are upon us, remember those less fortunate. You can donate a toy to a child in need. MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station. To be added to the Constant Contact email list, email John Martin at classes@mtgms.org.

Classes include silversmithing, faceting, lapidary, wire-wrapping, basic stone carving, chain maille and many 1-2 day workshops. Discounted prices range from $10 to $25 per class to FiftyForward members. Signups for Winter classes will be place Saturday, December 15.

Membership Fees to Increase January 1, 2019 Effective January 2019, FiftyForward center membership fees will increase to $12 a month via bank draft or $144 annually. As a nonprofit agency, we rely on proceeds from annual membership and program fees, special events, local government grants and funders, active volunteers and other generous community supporters to provide engagement opportunities for older adults. FiftyForward has not raised membership rates in eight years. This increase will offset the rising costs we are seeing to maintain our lifelong learning centers and programs.

Be aware that you can renew your membership at anytime (before it expires) to keep the $120 rate for at least one more year. Bank draftees will not see an increase until their 2019 membership expiration. See staff for more information.

Please note all members will be required to complete a new membership form in 2019. *TRIPS AND EVENTS POLICIES* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed: • All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance and credit will be given to those already signed up.

• If you choose to meet the bus at a destination, you will be charged $2 to offset the bus fee. This fee does not apply if the bus is full.

• When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time.

• If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

• NEW POLICY: CREDITS WILL BE AVAILABLE ONLY FOR 90 DAYS. • A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited unless someone takes your place from the waiting list or by someone you recruit.

• Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

• Please note the bus departure time and arrive on time. Drivers will not wait!

• There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

• Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.

Basic Internet Safety Computer Class-Wed., Dec. 5 and Wed., Dec. 12 at 2 pm. This is FREE to our members. Everyone is invited to the Dental Health Care Fair in our conference room. Lunchbunch– Fri., Dec. 7. The lunch gang is headed to Coco’s Italian Market in West Nashville. If you enjoy fresh Italian food then you will love Coco’s. Walgreens Bingo Day-Wed., Dec. 12 at 2 pm. Instead of a health talk this month, Walgreens will be hosting a Bingo to celebrate the holidays. Their game will be after our 12:30 pm Bingo game so stick around and play another game. You must sign up with a staff member or volunteer. This is FREE! Silver Sneakers Pop-Up Class-Wed., Dec. 12 at 2 pm. Silver Sneakers will be offering a FREE aerobics exercise class to all members. You do not have to be a Silver Sneakers member to participate. This class is taught by certified Silver Sneakers instructor, Jenny Zaves. This is for all exercise levels and can be modified if needed. Sign up with a staff member or a volunteer.

Shinn Digg-Fri., Dec. 14. Join us for the FREE annual holiday Shinn Digg sponsored by the George Shinn Foundation. The Shinn Foundation is dedicated to making a difference among the people it serves. This years Shinn Digg will be packed with holiday songs sung by members of the Grand Ole Opry, over the top prizes, a delicious lunch and will be hosted by a “surprise” guest star. We only have a limited number of tickets available, and they usually go very fast. The cost for the bus is $5.

Donelson Café’s Christmas Recipe & Ugly Sweater Contests –Mon., Dec. 17 from 1-2 pm.

Come dressed in your festive holiday attire (aka: ugly Christmas sweater) and have lunch in the Donelson Cafe. The winner of the Ugly Sweater contest will be announced at 2 pm and will win a cash prize. Enter your favorite holiday recipe (hand written is fine) by Wed., Dec. 12. Turn the recipe in to Chef Kevin or Mark with the Donelson Café. The winner of the recipe contest will also be announced at 2 pm and will win a cash prize. The winner’s recipe will be served as a special in 2019.

The TN School for the Blind students will also be recognized and celebrated. Join us in thanking these kids for all of their hard work around our building and in the café. Just show up!!

Eddie K. Holiday Concert-Tues., Dec. 18 at 10 am (NOTE TIME!!) Eddie Kilgallon from the famous country music group Montgomery Gentry will be back on our stage singing holiday classics. Eddie is always giving back to the senior community and always puts on a great show. Join us for the concert, a delicious lunch by The Donelson Café and prizes from our sponsors. All of Us Enrollments-Tues., Dec. 18 from 10 am-2:30 pm. This program through the National Institutes of Health seeks to enroll 1 million participants from all backgrounds to improve the health of future generations. Supper Club-Thurs., Dec. 20. Volunteer Amanda is headed to Monell’s at the Manor for a family style holiday dinner. Christmas Caroling-Fri., Dec. 21 Ride the Donelson Station sleigh (aka the bus) to bring cheer to members who are unable to get out this holiday season. Chair Yoga will not be held in December. Classes will begin again on Tuesday, January 8 at 9:15 am.  Rummikub is on Wednesdays at 1:30 pm. New players are welcome.  Book Club meets Monday, The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. nd  Summit Audiology will be here on the 2 Tuesday of each month at 11:15 to offer FREE hearing exams.  Chess Club meets on Tuesdays at 1 pm. All are welcome—beginners and experienced!  Weight Watchers meets on Tuesday evenings at 5:30 pm for Weight Watchers members.  Texas Hold ‘Em is on Tuesdays at 4 pm. Join the group of fun players!  The Walking Club will NOW meet on Wednesdays at 8:15 am at the Kohl’s Trailhead. It it’s too cold, the group meets at Opry Mills in front of the Rain Forest Café.  Mah Jong meets Thursdays at 10 am and can take more players.  Digital Camera Club, Computer Club and IPAD/Tablet groups welcome everyone. Just bring your gadgets! Groups meet the 2nd and 3rd Tuesday at 10 am & 11 am.  “A More Positive You” support group will NOT meet in December. We may pick back up in the spring. Grief and Loss Group meets the 1st Sunday at 2 pm at St. Phillips’ Church, 85 Fairway Dr. They play cards the 4th Thursday at Donelson Station at 9:30 am.  Members with a December Birthday are invited to join us for cake on Thursday, December 20 at 1 pm sponsored by Senior Helpers and Wilson Bank and Trust. 

Sing Along Choir meets at 11 am. Have fun singing old songs and hymns. Travel to nursing homes to bring a little joy. Just show up and sing along!  Tailgating Share snacks with the aerobics group Fridays after class! 9:30 am. st rd  Let’s Bowl! Exercise Classes for All Intensity Levels and Abilities

Low—Low or no impact exercise. Great for beginners or those with mobility issues.  Low Impact Aerobics on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:45 am  Arthritis Foundation Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 am—seated class  Qi Gong Class on Mondays at 9:45 am—great for improving balance.  Tai Chi on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm—great for improving balance.

Moderate—You will breathe harder but can still carry on a conversation. You may sweat.  Zumba Gold on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:15 pm.  Beginner’s Strength Training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3 pm.  Line Dancing on Wednesdays at 9:30 am.  Walking Club on Wednesdays at 8:15 am—good for all levels; walkers choose intensity  Yoga with Richard on Fridays at 7:45 am  Yoga on Mondays and Fridays at 5:15 pm High—Breathing becomes more rapid making it difficult to talk. You will sweat.  Advance Strength Training on Tuesdays/Thursdays at 8:15 am or Saturdays at 9:15 am.

Sing-Along Choir Fridays at 11 am Do you sing? Join our Sing-Along Choir on Fridays at 11 am. They meet in the auditorium and take their show “on the road” monthly to share their love for singing with different assisted living and nursing homes in the area.

This month they will be singing on Friday, December 14 at 11 am at Charter Senior Living in Hermitage and Friday, December 21 at 11 am at Bristol Terrace in Donelson.

Bristol Terrace is the new assisted living facility (formerly Donelson Place) on McCampbell Avenue. If you would like to join them or just want to watch their performance you are welcome to do that. They would love to have you.

This is a 6-week series of writing assignments designed for personal growth and development. Through writing, you will develop greater self-awareness to create the life you desire.

You will use the written word as an avenue for expressing and asserting your individuality and authentic self.

The workshop writing exercises involve five writing genres: Introspective Writing, Creative Writing, Op-ed Writing, Memoir Writing, and Private Letters Writing. In each class you will learn the unique aspects of these different writing styles and explore examples of each. Workshop participants will be provided with step by step instructions on how to complete each of the five writing assignments.

Author Jim Palmer will lead the workshop. Jim is also a professional writing coach who guides people through the process of writing and publishing their books. Is there a writer inside you with something to express? Learn more about the craft of writing in a casual, fun and rewarding atmosphere. The cost is $60 for members. Inclement Weather Policy If Metro schools are closed, we will NOT have our regular daytime programming, classes, events or scheduled trips. However, our office will still open, although possibly on a delayed schedule.

Classes may restart before Metro reopens schools as long as the roads and our facility are safe. Staff and member safety is most important.
