December 5th Holiday Extravaganza!

Saturday, December 5 is a BIG day at FiftyForward Donelson Station! We have so much going on! Here’s the lineup for the day:

9 am—4 pm Shop our Holiday Craft Fair and Bargain Basement sale.

There will be lots of unique Christmas gift, such as handmade wreaths, jewelry, ornaments, tie-dyed apparel, African art, candles and much more in our hallways.

Shop our Bargain Basement, located at the side of the building, filled with great deals on household items and gifts.

11:30 am “Reminiscences and Carols” Enjoy a holiday musical performance by The Prime Time Players.

Tickets include a delicious brunch for $10 ($12 at the door).

Tickets can be purchased in the office or at the volunteer desk.

2 pm Watch the Donelson Hermitage Christmas Parade beginning at 2 pm! Get pictures with Santa immediately after the parade in our lobby.

6 pm “A 1940s Radio Music Christmas Carol” begins at 6 pm with dinner and the show at 7 pm. Tickets are $30 for dinner and the show. Reserve yours today!

Join us for our 2 annual tree-lighting ceremony on Fri., Dec. 4 at 4:30 pm.

Bring an ornament to hang on the tree, and enjoy hot apple cider with friends.

Christmas Center Dinner Enjoy the delightful voices of the Nashville Belle Choir while enjoying a holiday meal prepared by the Palm Tree Café on Wednesday, December 16 at 6 pm. The Nashville Belle Choir consists of 16 women ages 30-80 singing a cappella. Don’t miss this performance and meal for only $9. Sign up in the office or at the volunteer desk.

Inclement Weather Policy Even though it’s only November, there is always the possibility of inclement weather.

Please note: If Metro schools are closed, we will NOT have our regular daytime programming, classes, events or scheduled trips. However, our office will still open, although possibly on a delayed schedule. The center will typically only close if the state offices are closed.

Dear Friends: Happy Holidays! What a wonderful time to count our blessings!

We are now fully staffed after adding our morning office manager, Katie Blancett. Katie is a former staff member, and we are grateful for her return! We are also blessed to have the funds to replace the HVAC unit in the auditorium and be toasty warm this winter!

Speaking of funds, members should have received a wonderful Program Director letter written by a FiftyForward center member asking for support.

Lisa Maddox While membership fees offset some of the building costs, it does lmaddox@fiftyforward.org not cover everything. We rely on donations. I ask that you please consider making a year-end tax deductible contribution.

December is filled with so many events and trips to help celebrate the holidays! I hope you will all find some way to participate.

Please make sure when you sign up for trips or presentations that you are positive you will be able to attend. Illness is inevitable, but it’s very frustrating (for me and the guest speakers) when people sign up and do not attend. This is just a courtesy reminder to keep track of your trips and write down the dates and times.

Carnegie Writer’s Workshop Are you published? Do you want to be a published author?

Learn how to accomplish this at the FREE Carnegie Writer’s Workshop.

This is a chance of a lifetime! Only 15 spots available, so sign up today!

This workshop is open to all levels of writers. You will write short stories, poetry, work on collaborative writing and plays.

This is a 6-week class starting on Tuesday, January 12 at 6 pm with the last class meeting on February 16. All of the work will be submitted and edited for publishing with the help of the Carnegie Writer’s instructor. You will own the copyright to your own works.

On March 15 at 6 pm, we will have a book signing with all book sales proceeds benefitting FiftyForward Donelson Station. Everybody will be invited including your family, friends and members of our center. The authors will share their works and their journey to becoming a published author. Registration MUST be done with the front office or at the volunteer desk.

The deadline for class registration is January 11.

Help support US veterans at the 3rd Annual Holiday Gift & Toy Drive benefitting the Nashville Vet Center’s combat veterans and their families. Christmas Craft Workshop-Wed., Dec. 9 AND Wed., Dec 16 at 10 am. We are offering two different craft workshops with Judith Broadbent. Each workshop is two hours and the cost is $10 per workshop. You will be making ornaments in workshop #1 and Christmas Trees in workshop #2. Both of these include some sewing. Judith will guide you in making your craft beautiful! ClearCaptions Booth-Wed., Dec 16 from 10 am—12 pm. Stop by the Clear Captioning booth and learn about the FREE phones available to seniors who have experienced hearing loss. No appointment necessary!

Christmas Center Dinner -Wed., Dec. 16 at 6 pm. Celebrate the holidays with us as we listen to The Nashville Belles perform Christmas songs on stage. This a cappella choir consists of 16 wonderful women, ages 30-80, who have performed The Star Spangled Banner at the Nashville Sounds game. Enjoy their songs and a delicious meal from The Palm Tree Café. The cost for this event is $9. Sign up in the office or at the volunteer desk.

Franklin’s Holly Trolley Tour-Fri., Dec. 18. Hop on the Franklin Trolley and stroll through town as we gaze at the Christmas lights and glittering decorations. This tour features beautiful light displays in Westhaven, downtown Franklin and surrounding areas of Williamson County. Enjoy shopping on the square and have a bite to eat before boarding the trolley at 6:30 pm. Leave the center at 3 pm. Cost for the trolley ride and van is $22.00.

Nashville Ballet: The Nutcracker-Wed., Dec. 23. The Nashville Ballet has graciously given us FREE tickets to see “The Nutcracker” at TPAC’s Jackson Hall.

This is a classic story that never gets old. The average ticket price to see this performance is over $80. Space is limited, so you MUST make sure you are able to attend if you sign up for this event. The cost for parking and the van is $7. Leave the center at 1 pm. The ballet lasts for about two hours. We should return by 4:30 pm.

The Foster Grandparent Program is searching for older adults who enjoy working with children.

Foster Grandparent Volunteers share their days shaping children’s tomorrows through tutoring and mentoring. Make a difference in the life of a child!

Changes” will meet Tues., Dec. 8 and 22 at 9:45 am. Debbie Reilly, LSW, will help you set goals leading to a healthier lifestyle (physically and mentally). Join Sit and Stitch on Fridays at 10 am. We have two volunteers who will be happy to help you with your crochet project! This is a time to talk, relax and make something pretty! Sing-Along Choir meets Fridays at 11 am. This group has a lot of fun! They even take their “show in the road” to assisted living centers in the area. Just show up! Ballroom Dancing is cancelled until 2016 due to lack of participation. Line Dancing is FREE and FUN exercise each Wed. at 9:30 am. No experience needed! Tai Chi is FREE! This class is great if you have balance issues. Tuesdays at 1:30 pm. Have you experienced the loss of a loved one? The Grief and Loss Group meets Sunday, December 6 at 2 pm at St. Phillips’ Church located at 85 Fairway Drive in Donelson.

They also play cards the 4th Thursday monthly at Donelson Station at 9:30 am. rd Summit Audiology will be here the 3 Wednesday of every month from 10am until noon. Our Digital Camera Club, Computer Club and IPAD/Tablet groups welcome all interested.

*UPDATED REFUND POLICY ON TRIPS AND EVENTS* FiftyForward Donelson Station’s trips and events have become more popular. To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed:  

   

All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance, and credit will be given to those already signed up.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time. Please remember that presenters work hard to bring education/information to the center!

There are no cash refunds for any trips.

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place on the trip.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.
