The BBQ has been a Donelson Station tradition for 30 years! Enjoy live entertainment, a craft fair and market with handmade and new items, a silent auction, great fellowship and the most scrumptious BBQ, sides and desserts in town!

We need your help to make all this happen! We need volunteers NOW to prepare and also in September to make it a success. Check out the sign-up sheets once they are posted in the lobby.

Help us cover the food costs by purchasing a pink pig for $25, a silver pig for $50 or a gold pig for $100. Rent a booth for both Friday and Saturday for $40 ($50 nonmembers) to sell handmade or new items. In addition to cash donations, we need canned soft drinks and bottled water. Just drop them off at the office.

Spread the word! Bring your friends! Talk to your favorite businesses about auction items or sponsorship. Most importantly, plan to be there!!

Center Lunch Wed., August 24 at 11 am Don’t miss this month’s center lunch starring Steven Whitson, who auditioned for the television show “The Voice.” A Nashville recording artist and songwriter, Steven currently works at Barbara Mandrell’s mansion, The Fontanel, and is signed by their label, Fontanel Records. Steven has opened for Rascal Flatts, Craig Morgan, Marty Stuart and Aaron Fontanel. He debuted on The Marie Osmond Show and works with his mentor, Brenda Lee. Our FiftyForward group visited the Fontanel Mansion recently and Steven performed some of his original songs for us. He was fantastic, and we can’t wait to have him on stage here at FiftyForward.

Center Director Notes…

Dear Friends: It’s hard to believe summer is almost over! Only five months to Christmas?! There is so much happening between now and then!

FiftyForward has adopted a new mission statement and strategic plan. Donelson Station’s Advisory Council will be meeting on Thursday, August 11 at 11am to work towards developing steps to meet the goals set in the strategic plan. Please join us with your ideas!

We also need your help getting ready for our 30th Annual BBQ, which takes place September 23 & 24! We need help organizing the event, gathering silent auction items from area businesses, finding entertainment, recruiting volunteers and more. Stop by my office to find out how you can help.

The Donelson Station budget has been approved by FiftyForward Board of Directors. You may get a copy from me if you wish to see how much it takes to run our busy center!

Tanis Westbrook (afternoon) August is another hot month for trips. The new van has really twestbrook@fiftyforward.org been a blessing, but I am trying to stay away from doing anything outside until the weather cools down a bit. By October, we should have a lot more trips planned. Let me hear your ideas!

Japanese Language Classes Starts August 11 at 1 pm We are very excited to offer a four-week basic Japanese class.

Laneese Cosby, also known by her Japanese name Miyu, is a native of Nashville and has been studying the Japanese language and culture for years. Laneese graduated from Ole Miss with a degree in General Studies and a minor in Japanese.

While at Ole Miss, Laneese studied Japanese abroad in Osaka and Kyoto. She has taught group and private Japanese lessons in Nashville for years and is excited to teach at FiftyForward Donelson Station.

During the four weeks you will be able to grasp a basic knowledge of the language and culture. You will learn basic Japanese conversation, colors, greetings and more.

The cost is $20 for this four week class.

Beginner Billiard’s Lessons Randall Walker, a seasoned pool player and Donelson Station member, will be teaching beginners how to play a game of pool. Lessons will be Wednesdays from 1:30 pm-2:30 pm from August 3 to September 7 (6weeks). This is FREE, but there is room for only eight people so make sure to sign up quickly in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Volunteer Training Office Managers Katie Blancett and Tanis Westbrook invite our office volunteers to join them for an informative volunteer training session on Tuesday, August 30 at 10 am.

They will update each of you on new policies and procedures as well as educate you on Title 6. Refreshments will be provided.

Internet Safety The Internet can be an exciting, yet scary place! Join FiftyForward’s Victory Over Crime on Aug 22 at 9:45 am to explore how you can enjoy all the world wide web has to offer while keeping yourself safe from internet thieves!

This is something that ALL of our members should attend. There are too many scams and stealing of personal information going on while you are logged onto the internet. Learn ways to keep yourself safe when you are using public Wi-Fi. Sign up for this informative presentation in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Arthritis Foundation’s Walk With Ease Get relief from arthritis pain or just get active with this 6-week program starting Mon., August 8. This program is based on the honor system where walkers track miles, dates and times of walks. The goal is to walk for 20 to 30 minutes three times a week, either outside or on a treadmill.

This program is proven to “ease” participants’ arthritis pain by moving the joints AND for those who just want to exercise to maintain their health.

Meet on August 8th at 9:30 in the Social Hall to receive your tracking sheets. The first 10 participants to sign up will receive a FREE pedometer. Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Lisa will be walking outside on Mon/Wed/ Fri at 9:30 am if you would like to join her.

Bridge Players Needed Our Bridge group meets on Tuesdays at 10 am and are looking for more players to join them.

If you have an interest in playing Bridge contact staff who will get you in touch with the leader, Betty Allen.

Betty is a long-time Bridge player and is willing to teach you the game of Bridge.

Remember, Bridge is an excellent way to improve and maintain your cognitive thinking and health.

AUGUST TRIPS AND EVENTS Arthritis Foundation’s Walk With Ease Program-Starts Mon., August 8. Get motivated and join us for a 6-week walking program starting Monday, Aug. 8 and ending Friday, Sept. 16. The great part about this is you track your own miles and time whether you walk outside or use a treadmill. The goal is to walk at least three times a week for 20-30 minutes each time. Walk With Ease is an evidence-based program proven to help those who suffer from arthritis. We will physically meet on August 8 at 9:30 am in the Social Hall, and you will receive tracking sheets to be returned on Sept. 16. The first ten people to sign up will receive a FREE pedometer. Sign up in the front office or at the volunteer desk.

Breckenridge School of Nursing Stations-Wed., August 3 at 9:45 am The nursing students from Breckenridge School of Nursing will be presenting a story board and hand outs related to common health issues. There will be ten stations with different health related topics. The health issues covered are diabetic prevention, diabetic management, fall prevention, skin cancer identification and prevention, hypertension, vaccines for the elderly- pneumonia, flu and shingles, cardiac disease prevention, smoking cessation, dementia recognition and oral health. This is FREE, so stop by and chat with the students. They will be stationed in our hallway.

Shopping at the Oaks in Murfreesboro and Lunch at Peter D’s–Tues., August 9 . Enjoy shopping at great retail stores such as Steinmart, Ross, Marshalls, Bed Bath & Beyond, HH Gregg and Ashley Furniture. Lunch will be at Peter D’s which has an array of dishes to choose from. Walgreens Health Talk “Nutrition & Exercise”– Wed., August 10 at 2 pm. The Pharmacy Manager from Walgreens will share the importance of diet and exercise as we age and remind you that it’s never too late to make a lifestyle change. Every minute you walk extends your life by 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Even if you don’t have a weight problem you still need to eat healthy. Learn the ins and outs on staying healthy in our daily lives. Japanese Classes-Thursdays, starting August 11 at 1 pm. This is a FiftyForward first! We are offering a four-week basic Japanese class to our members. You will learn the basics of the language including basic conversation, numbers, colors and more. The cost for the classes is $20 for all four weeks. Music For Seniors at the Nashville Jazz Workshop-Mon., August 15. Join us in the “ Jazz Cave” for a FREE concert featuring Larry and Nancy Mecham. Victory Over Crime ”Internet Safety” Presentation-Mon., August 22 at 9:45 am. If you access the internet, you NEED to attend this presentation. Connecting to the internet in a public place comes with significant risk. Public Wi-Fi is never private. Scammers come up with ways to steal your information or attack your computer while you are on a public Wi-Fi. Trader Joe’s and Lunch at The California Pizza Kitchen-Tues., August 23. Trader Joe’s is one of our favorite places to shop for amazing foods from around the world with great quality and prices. Trader Joe’s buys directly from suppliers to get the best prices and then passes on the savings to their customers. Lunch is at The California Pizza Kitchen located outside of the Green Hills Mall. Susie’s Boutique-Wed., August 24 from 9am—2 pm. Donelson Member, Sue Proehl, will open her boutique in the Conference Room selling all of her beautiful, handmade items. Make sure to stop by and check out all the goodies she has for sale. Sue will also donate 10% of her sales back to the center. Don’t miss this!

Center Luncheon-Wed., August 24 at 11 am. Steven Whitson will make his first ever appearance at FiftyForward Donelson Station. This Tennessee native has been signed by Fontanel Records (Barbara Mandrell’s label) and is ready to share his talent with us. Steven will sing some of his originals mixed with familiar hits. Supper Club-Thurs., August 25. The dinner gang is headed to Tenn Sixteen in East Nashville.

Tenn Sixteen is a colorful bohemian bar and grill offering Southern and Cajun cooking. Enjoy chicken & waffles, hot chicken, blackened catfish, gorgonzola and cremini-stuffed meatloaf and so much more. There are vegetarian dishes available too! Leave the center at 5 pm. The cost for the van is $7.

Home Visits-Fri., August 26. For the last few months, we have been visiting homebound members who are not able to get out of their homes or who are temporarily in a nursing home for rehabilitation. This means so much to have others visit and check in on them. If you would like to be a part of this, please see Lisa Maddox, Program Director. Our next home visit will be Friday, August 26.

We will leave at 2 pm in the center van.

Talent Show “Donelson Stations Got Talent”-Wed., August 31 at 10 :30 am. The Foster Grandparent Program is searching for older adults who enjoy working with children. Foster Grandparent Volunteers share their days shaping children’s tomorrows through tutoring and mentoring.

Foster Grandparents receive:  A small hourly stipend  Transportation allowance  Free lunch while volunteering  Admiration of children

Call FiftyForward’s Foster Grandparent Program TODAY! 615-743-3420 Want to volunteer? You will flip for F.L.I.P! FLIP (Friends Learning In Pairs) is an intergenerational, volunteer tutoring program under the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

Tutors work one-on-one with students in Nashville public schools helping mentor, encourage and provide friendship and assistance to students struggling in Reading and Math. Volunteers meet once a week for two hours working with a total of four students.

Tutors must be 55 or older and must be eager to help improve the lives of elementary school age students. *REFUND POLICY ON TRIPS AND EVENTS* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed:  

All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance, and credit will be given to those already signed up.

When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time. Please remember that presenters work hard to bring education/information to the center!

If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.

A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited. If you sign up for a ticketed trip/event, you must find someone to take your place.

Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.

There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.

Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.

Join the librarian from the Hermitage branch library as she discusses and shares her insight on books she has read.  Our Digital Camera Club, Computer Club and IPAD/Tablet groups welcome all interested. Just show up with your gadgets! Groups meet the 2nd and 3rd Tuesdays monthly 10 am. rd  Summit Audiology will be here the 3 Wednesday of every month from 1:15 pm-3 pm. All hearing tests are FREE! Make an appointment today.  Line Dancing is a FREE and FUN exercise each Wed. at 9:30 am. No experience needed!  Have you experienced the loss of a loved one? The Grief and Loss Group meets Sunday, August 3 at 2 pm at St. Phillips’ Church located at 85 Fairway Drive in Donelson. They also play cards the 4th Thursday monthly at Donelson Station at 9:30 am.  We welcome anyone who has an August birthday to join us for cake on Thursday, August 25 at 1 pm. Tailgating Share a snack with the aerobics group Fridays after class! Just show up!  Join Color & Crochet on Fridays at 10 am. Bring your coloring book or crochet project and meet up with “old” and “new” friends. This is a time to talk, relax and explore your creative side. If you would like to learn to crochet, we have a couple of experienced members who will assist you.  Sing-Along Choir meets Fridays at 11 am (resuming September 9). This group has a lot of fun!

They even take their show on the road to area assisted living centers. Just show up and sing! st rd  Let’s Bowl! Join us the 1 and 3 Fridays at 2 pm at the Strike & Spare in Donelson located at 2710 Old Lebanon Rd. Shoe rental $1 and $1 per game! You can’t beat that! 
