CENTER MEMBERSHIP FiftyForward Donelson Station is one of five lifelong learning centers in Davidson County and two in Williamson County. These centers offer various programs, classes and events monthly as well as access to the center amenities. Membership is $144 annually or $12 via monthly bank draft. We also accept Silver&Fit® and Silver Sneakers® reimbursement through some Medicare supplement plans. Check to see if you’re eligible. Leadership Donelson-Hermitage offers older adults a great opportunity to gain leadership experience and knowledge about their community. M3 (Modern, Mature and Motivated) will host “Lead-Up,” an informative session about the program, on May 7 at Hermitage UMC from 2-4 pm. Just show up if you’re interested! April is Volunteer Appreciation month. We will celebrate our volunteers on April 11. They all do such a spectacular job helping staff, working events, teaching classes and making sure our members’ needs are met. We couldn’t do it without them! We are excited that TN School for the Blind students are finalists in this year’s Mary Catherine Strobel Volunteer Awards for their volunteering at Donelson Station! I am so excited that certified personal trainer, Ronald Ruffin, is willing to help members personalize their exercise programs. He will also teach equipment training the first Friday monthly at 10 am. He will show you how to properly use the machines in both fitness rooms. Make sure to take advantage of both programs while we have access to our new volunteer trainer.

Personal Training Presentation Tuesday, April 9 10 am
Ronald Ruffin is a fitness and nutrition consultant as well as a certified Senior Fitness Instructor (American Sports and Fitness Association). He is volunteering at personal training workshops and senior training as part of his community service for The Brentwood Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Ronald has previously studied through the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and has written a manual "Total Fitness for Law Enforcement Officers”. He is a retired city and court administrator and an adjunct professor. Ronald has completed 38 marathons and currently competes on the masters and seniors track and field circuit. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and master’s from Atlanta University. You MUST attend this presentation if you are interested in setting up personal training sessions with Mr. Ruffin. Each personal training session will be $5. Personal training sessions will be scheduled after this presentation. *TRIPS AND EVENTS POLICIES* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed: • All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance and credit will be given to those already signed up. • If you choose to meet the bus at a destination, you will be charged $2 to offset the bus fee. This fee does not apply if the bus is full. • When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time. • If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip. • NEW POLICY: CREDITS WILL BE AVAILABLE ONLY FOR 90 DAYS. • A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited unless someone takes your place from the waiting list or by someone you recruit. • Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips. • Please note the bus departure time and arrive on time. Drivers will not wait! • There are no cash refunds for any trips/events. • Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.
Mastering the Art of Writing Class Mondays Starting April 8 at 1 pm (6 weeks)
Is there a writer in you wanting to come out? Have you ever considered writing and publishing a book? Critically acclaimed author, Tennessean columnist, professional writing coach and professor, Jim Palmer, will be leading a six-week class on mastering the craft of writing. Find your voice as a writer, discover the secrets to powerful and spellbinding writing, and learn the process of getting published. Whether you've dreamed of writing a book, have an interest in exploring writing as a hobby or want to express yourself more effectively through the written word, this class is for you. Course participants will identify individual writing projects and receive feedback and input from Jim as a professional writing coach. Each class covers a different aspect of masterful writing with an in-class writing exercise for developing greater writing skills. You don't have to be an experienced writer to take this class. Abraham Lincoln Presentation Friday, April 26 at 10 am
Experience the life story of the sixteenth president and learn about his struggle with the American Civil War. Whit McMahan portrays the life story of Abraham Lincoln. His goal as a living historian is to provide a taste of a bygone era and a sense of our nation’s greatest struggle. They accept many insurances. Make an appointment with a volunteer or staff. South Union Shaker Village Trip (Auburn, KY)– Wed., April 10. The Shakers came to South Union in 1807 and stayed until 1922. They kept journals of their activities, and from these journals one can catch a glimpse of the history of their daily lives, their belief in work and worship, their inventions and contributions, the birth of the seed industry, textile production and what it was like to live during that period of time. This wonderful historic site takes one back in time and perhaps gives a better understanding of the challenges facing the Shakers. Take a self guided tour of this historical village which includes a 30-minute introduction. You are free to explore four floors of exhibits in the Centre House and five additional historic village structures on site. After your tour, enjoy lunch at the East Main Diner where you will enjoy great home cooked food. The cost is $16 for the tour and bus and lunch is on your own. Abe Lincoln Presentation-Fri., April 26 at 10 am. Whit McMahan portrays the life story of Abraham Lincoln as he takes you back in time to the life of our 16th president of the United States. Being a Lincoln impersonator/actor is his divine gift. Don’t miss his fantastic portrayal. There will be a $5 charge which is directly paid to Mr. McMahan. Sign up with a staff member or volunteer. Kentucky Downs Trip-Fri., April 26. Our volunteer Amanda will be taking you for a night of bingo, slots and other gambling games. Bible Study will not meet in April and will begin meeting the 4th Saturday in May. Exercise Equipment Orientation meets the first Friday at 10 am. The next orientation is Friday, April 5. Beginner’s Line Dancing Starts Wed., May 8 at 11 am (8 weeks) Our Line Dancing instructor, Mary Jane Pelz, has graciously offered to teach another Beginner’s Line Dancing class for 8 weeks starting May 1. She has requested that you attend at least six out of the eight classes in order to keep up with the rest of the class. Sign up with a staff member or volunteer.
Pool Lessons nd 2 Friday at 2 pm Ralph Bristol has offered to teach members pool lessons on the 2nd Friday of each month from 2 pm until 4 pm. If you have always wanted to learn the game, this is your chance! You do not need to bring your own pool cue. We have extra cues available. Space is limited so be sure to sign up quickly with staff or a volunteer. Non-members will pay $5.
Canvas Painting Class Mon., April 22 at 2 pm
Paint this beautiful “Springtime Eiffel Tower” picture on canvas with professional artist, Kara Williamson. Kara will teach you step-by-step how to easily paint this picture. April/May NPL Computer Class Schedule All Classes begin at 2 pm April 3 Getting Started—iPad Settings: This class will look at tablet settings to learn where to find information such as what version of software the tablet is using, how much storage is available and how do so a software update. Also learn to connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, view the iCloud Backup, turn on Find My iPad, change the sounds, turn on Do not Disturb, adjust the Display and Brightness and change the Wallpaper. April 17 Using the Internet and Tablet Help for Seniors Using the booklet “12 Ways Being Online Can Improve Your Life,” explore topics of health, housing, civil engagement, public safety, news and much more. Also explore the “Easy Tablet Help for Seniors” app, which guides new users through basic navigation of a tablet. This app can be downloaded to assist you beyond the classroom. April 24 HubNashville 311 app The new Metro Government app allows you to access many government related areas directly from your phone or tablet. This class will begin with how to download the app from the app store. Explore the app and learn to report a pot hole in the Streets, Roads & Sidewalks section. May 1 Google apps–Part 1 Using a library supplied device, learn about Google email (Gmail). Send and receive emails to classmates. Learn to save a picture from an email. (If you do not have an email address and would like one, time can be arranged before or after class to assist you in setting one up.) These classes are FREE and taught by the Nashville Public Library Instructor. There are only 10 available spots for each class so be sure to sign up quickly. Eddie will be gracing our stage with his “Springtime Songs and Stories.” For those of you new to Eddie’s music, he plays keyboard and vocals for the famous country band, Montgomery Gentry. When he is not traveling on the road, Eddie gives back to Middle Tennessee’s senior community with his music. We will have sponsors and door prizes too!
