Dear Friends: Spring is here! We are so excited about our third annual Pancake Breakfast & Plant Sale on Saturday, April 7. Thanks to all who pre -ordered their plants. We will have some extras, so get here early!

This is a great way to fill your tummy and your yard while helping support your Center! Also, do some Spring cleaning and plan to bring out any bulk items to the dumpster that will be on site that day only. Call for a list of accepted items.

FiftyForward is once again seeking funding through both Metro Nashville and the TN State Legislature. This funding is extremely helpful in filling the gap in funding needed to pay for our building, staff and other overhead costs. Please let your representatives know you would appreciate their support with these requests.

Leadership Donelson-Hermitage offers a great opportunity for active older adults to gain leadership experience and knowledge about their community. M3 (Modern, Mature and Motivated) will host “Lead-Up”, an informative session about the program, on May 1 at Donelson Church of Christ from 2-4 pm. Just show up if you’re interested!

Office/Volunteer Managers Lastly, April is Volunteer Appreciation month. We will celebrate Jessie Jefferies our volunteers on April 17. Aging Mastery Program (AMP) Starts Monday, April 23 from 6-7:30 pm AMP is a national program developed by the National Council on Aging to empower seniors to improve their health, financial security and overall well-being by taking small steps toward improvement.

The program will meet weekly till June 11.

AMP is FREE for FiftyForward members. Nonmembers pay $60. Space is limited. Sign up soon with staff or a volunteer.

Senior Brain Games- “Trivia Fun” Mondays from 2-3 pm (starts April 9) An active brain is more likely to be a healthy brain. As we age it's important to keep challenging ourselves by learning new things and by spending time with other people. Brain Games meets both goals and gives seniors the opportunity to visit another great senior center and possibly leave with a trophy!

We are looking for members who love trivia to get together weekly and play fun trivia games.

Our goal is to have 3-4 individuals (out of all who attend) who would be able to represent Want to learn more?

MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station. To be added to the Constant Contact email list, email John Martin at classes@mtgms.org.

Center Luncheon Wednesday, April 18 at 11 am Don’t miss this performance by Nashville singer and songwriter, Josh Helms. Josh has spent years honing the craft of songwriting and discovering what it means to deliver those songs to a live audience. "As far back as I can remember I’ve been singing in church, and I would always stick at least one of my original songs in the set list," Josh admits.

While in college, Josh was selected two years in a row as a finalist on USA Network’s Nashville Star. During trips to Nashville singing at the Wildhorse Saloon and The Stage on Broadway, Josh fell in love with Nashville and everything the city had to offer. "I knew then that I had to move here and steep myself in the craft of writing and performing country songs. I was hooked!"

The success of his 2008 gospel record ‘So the World May Hear’ allowed Josh to frequently travel back to Nashville to continue writing and performing until he moved her fulltime in 2010.

With a catalogue of nearly 300 songs, Josh has written with many successful writers and publishing companies. Josh is performing weekly at the Nashville Palace and other clubs.

Brains and Balance Class-Wed., April 4 at 11 am. Angie Rixham, fitness instructor from McKendree Village, is going to teach her Brains and Balance class on a trial basis (the first Wednesday of April and May) to see if it’s something we like. Studies have shown that when you increase cognitive ability, it increases your balance; and when you increase balance, it increases your cognitive ability. We also know that we should train our brain just like we train our muscles with progressive resistance and overload. This FREE class will alternate between brain drills and balance activities and is for anybody who is interested.

Hiking Club-Fri., April 6. It’s that time of year to get out and hike. We will be hiking the beautiful Harpeth Woods trail at Edwin Warner park which is 2 1/2 miles long, NOT paved and is for the experienced hiker. You must be able to hike uphill, have good balance to step over branches and endure the entire 2 1/2 miles. The cost is $5 for the bus. Leave the center at 9:15 am. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes and bring water. Sign up with staff or a volunteer.

Pancake and Plants Fundraiser-Sat., April 7 from 8 am - 1 pm. Come out and support your center by purchasing a pancake breakfast for you and your family, shop for goodies in our Bargain Basement and pick up or purchase plants from Young’s Nursery. We will also have a medication disposal program and a bulk item drop off.

Music For Seniors-Tues., April 10. We are headed to The Looby Theatre to watch a FREE concert featuring Whit and Al Hill’s “Award Winning Songs From the Crossroads of Folk and Blues”. Since 2002, Al has been music director for three-time Grammy nominee and the Blues Foundation’s Best Soul Blues Female Artist 2016, Bettye Levette. Don’t miss this performance!

Lunchbunch-Wed., April 11. The Lunchbunch is headed to 5 Chefs in Portland. This “ meat and three” also serves specialty sandwiches (hot turkey & Swiss, pimento cheese), salads and soups. Enjoy browsing through their lavish gift shop after you eat. The cost for the bus is $7.

Walgreens Health Presentation-Wed., April 11 at 2 pm. Join the Walgreens pharmacist to discuss “Eating For Healthy Aging”. It’s never too late to make healthy lifestyle changes like eating better and getting active. Improving what you eat can reduce your risk of chronic health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Learn all about these foods to help you age healthier. This is FREE! AARP Driving Class-Mon., April 16 and Tues., April 17 from 1–5 pm both days. Learn new rules of the road and how to be a safer driver with this course intended for those 50 and older. You must attend both days of this driving course to receive credit. Check with your insurance company to see if you qualify for a discount before you decide to take this class.

The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Sign up with a volunteer or staff member. Pay the instructor directly at the first class.

Volunteer Appreciation Brunch-Tues., April 17 at 10:30 am. We invite our volunteers to a brunch to celebrate their dedication to our center. Invitations will be sent to those who have volunteered within the last year. Enjoy a light brunch, refreshments and fellowship. RSVP to a staff member or volunteer.

Center Luncheon-Wed., April 18 at 11 am. Josh Helms will entertain us this month.

Josh signed a publishing deal with Meld Music/Fair Trade in 2015 and is a SESAC writer. He has performed his “Southern Fried Sunday” live at the Bluebird Café. Lunch is provided by Donelson Café. The cost for entertainment and lunch is $8. Sign up with staff or a volunteer.

Herb Plant Potting with UHC- Wed., April 18 at 1:45 pm. A UHC representative will conduct a FREE herb plant potting class. Enjoy light refreshments, giveaways and take home your potted herbs. Space is limited, so sign up quickly with a volunteer or staff member.

Mystery Lunch-Thurs., April 19. Join us as we head to an undisclosed location for a delicious lunch. This is always a “surprise” and fills up quickly. The cost is $6 for the bus.

Basic Leather Class-Fri., April 20 from 1 pm—3pm. Learn the art of leather crafting catered to those with little or no prior experience in working with leather. Make your own leather goods and bring them home the same day. The cost is $15 and includes all materials.

Pet Community Center-Sat., April 21 from 9 am-1 pm. The Pet Community Center Mobile Unit will be in our parking lot providing you with low cost vaccinations for your dog or cat, microchips, heartworm tests and flea and tick preventatives. No appointment necessary.

NEW! Brains and Balance exercise class meets Wed., April 4 at 11am.

Chess Club will meet on Tuesdays at 1 pm. All are welcome!  Computer Classes are on are NOT meeting this month.  Weigh Watchers meets on Tuesday evenings at 5:30 pm.  Book Club meets April 23 at 10:30 am to discuss “ The Tortilla Curtain” by T.C. Boyle.  Texas Hold ‘Em is on Tuesdays at 4 pm. We NEED players! rd  Pool tournaments will be held on the 3 Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am.  Mah Jong meets Thursdays at 10 am and can take a few more players. Great for beginners or those with mobility issues.  Low Impact Aerobics on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:45 am  Arthritis Foundation Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 am—seated class  Qi Gong Class on Mondays at 9:45 am—great for improving balance.  Tai Chi on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm—great for improving balance.  Chair Yoga on Fridays at 10 am Moderate—You will breathe harder but can still carry on a conversation. You may sweat.  Stretch and Flexibility on Mon/Wed/Fri at 11 am. (This is a 6-week program only).  Zumba Gold on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:15 pm.  Beginner’s Strength Training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3 pm.  Yoga with Richard on Wednesdays at 7:45 am  Line Dancing on Wednesdays at 9:30 am.  Walking Club on Fridays at 8:15 am—good for all levels; walkers choose the intensity High—Breathing becomes more rapid making it difficult to talk. You will sweat.  Advance Strength Training on Tuesdays/Thursdays at 8:15 am or Saturdays at 9:15 am.

Nashville Sounds Game on May 7 Madison Station and Donelson Station are headed to see the Nashville Sounds take on the Memphis Redbirds at The First Tennessee Park. AARP Safe Driving Class Monday, April 16 and Tuesday, April 17 from 1 pm-5 pm (both days) Refresh your driving skills and attend the AARP Safe Driving Class. This is the nation’s first and largest refresher course designed specifically for drivers age 50+. You will learn current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You’ll learn how you can manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. You will also gain an appreciation of driving challenges and a better understanding of how to avoid potential collisions and injuring yourself or others. Nine in 10 course participants report changing at least one key driving behavior for the better as a result of this course.

You MUST attend both days to receive credit for the class. Check with your insurance company to see if completing this course would give you a discount on your car insurance.

The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members, payable to the instructor.

*TRIPS AND EVENTS POLICIES* To ensure members have adequate opportunity to attend trips and events and that staff time and center resources are properly utilized, the following polices must be followed:  All trips require a minimum of five people. Trips not meeting the minimum number will be cancelled 24 hours in advance and credit will be given to those already signed up.  If you choose to meet the bus at a destination, you will be charged $2 to offset the bus fee. This fee does not apply if the bus if full.  When you sign up for a trip or presentation/event, you are making a commitment to this activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar and showing up on time.  If you cancel 24 hours before a trip occurs, you will receive a credit toward another trip.  A ticketed trip/event will not be refunded or credited unless someone takes your place from the waiting list or by someone you recruit.  Cancelling or not showing up for three or more trips within a month will result in being placed on a waiting list the following month for all trips.  Please note the bus departure time and arrive on time. Drivers will not wait!  There are no cash refunds for any trips/events.  Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.
