In times like these, when sources of funding for centers like ours all too often shrink or disappear, we are especially delighted to announce that FiftyForward’s matching funds campaign will be offered once again this year! The campaign will begin on April 6 and run for 60 days. During

rank Clement served as the governor of Tennessee from 1953 - 1958, and again from 1963 - 1967. He was born in 1920 at Hotel Halbrook in Dickson, and that’s where the Red Hats are headed this April 27th. Hotel Halbrook now contains a museum, with exhibits about

this period, donations of any size will be matched dollar for dollar! Donations can be made in support of FiftyForward in general, or College Grove in particular. Be on the lookout for a letter with more details about the campaign. They say there will be an “artful twist” in honor of FiftyForward’s 60th Anniversary.

Clement as well as local and regional history. We will also see the rooms where the Clements lived while managing Hotel Halbrook. Seniors 50+ admission is $2. Next stop is Montgomery Bell State Park to visit the site of the first Cumberland Presbyterian Church!

The group will have lunch at the park’s restaurant and enjoy middle Tennessee’s glorious spring scenery on the way back. It just doesn’t get much better than this. The van will leave the Center at 9:00. Van fee is: $11.

We are in full swing with golf tournament preparations for the Katie Reed Golf Classic, Sat., May 7 — and we need your help!! In the past, members supported the tournament by sponsoring a half hole or hole, which we greatly appreciated. This year, the tournament is occurring at the same time our matching campaign is going on. Instead of asking you to contribute monetarily to both, I have a different way you can help with the golf tournament. Right now, we do not have a sponsor to donate the beverages we will need on tournament day. And here’s where you come into play: I am asking for each member to donate one or two twelve packs of cold drinks or water. We need a variety from Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Mello Yellow, Sprite, Mountain Dew or any diet drink. By asking you for this inkind donation, I hope you will still be able to donate monetarily to our matching campaign that runs through June 4. As always, thank you for your support …

The Williamson County Archives & Museum collection includes artifacts dating back to Native Americans and the long hunters, and up through history to the current day. Its military section includes a drum used in the War of 1812, and numerous swords and firearms from the civil war. There are also booths that depict historical settings, like a country kitchen, county musicians, and a moonshine still. In preparation for their summer season, the museum staff has developed a scavenger hunt — and they need some guinea pigs to try it out on!

Besides being a fun way to go through the museum, the point of the scavenger hunt is to make certain items in the museum “pop out.” Noteworthy items that might otherwise be missed. You don’t have to participate, but anyone who wants to can. After the museum, we’ll browse the shops down Main for awhile. Then, we have a noon lunch reservation at Merridee’s Breadbasket. Maybe we’ll stop by the new Sprouts Farmer’s Market on 96 on the way back. The van will leave the Center at 9:30 a.m. Van fee is $5.

We’ll learn about some of the outreach services offered by Alive Hospice when their Community Relations Manager, Keith King, and LCSW Pam Quaintance, speak to us on April 7. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Pam well understands how the illness of one affects the family as a whole. She will discuss “compassion fatigue,” the fatigue associated with care giving, how to recognize the signs and how to manage the symptoms. Pam will also talk about grief therapy, how to tell if we might need it, and what we could expect from this therapy. Plus, we’ll get an update on the new Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro. Alive Hospice is providing lunch for us at no charge, but reservations must be made by Tuesday, April 5. Limit 25.

Do you qualify for “extra help” with the cost of your Medicare? Find out when Will Harrison from the TN State Health Insurance Program joins us April 14. He will discuss:  the LIS program that helps with prescription drug costs, and  the Medicare Savings plans that provide assistance with Medicare Part B Premiums  the qualification guidelines for each. Please make lunch reservations by Tues., April 12.

Hands-Only CPR is a one-hour training class that provides life-saving care demonstrations and information that will prepare us to begin CPR until professional responders arrive. This is not a certification class, but we will be able to pr actice the techniques learned in class on a CPR manikin. Class is free. Please make reservations by Tues., April 26.

A program director from another FiftyForward center recommends Historic Lynnville as a fun daytrip destination — partly because of the Soda Pop Junction. Their hamburgers were voted #1 — and their milkshakes #2 — in the state of Tennessee. Though small, Lynnville seems to have some interesting stops just the same. Like Col. Littleton’s General Office and Works, where they craft hand made leather products. And, as a matter of fact, Bud, from Col. Littleton’s, says that the White Horse Trading Co. makes the best sour dough bread in the country. Plus they have antiques. There is a quilt shop. And a railroad museum that’s free, but it has a donation jar. Come with us on Apr. 21, and we’ll check out this quiet little Giles County town. The van leaves the Center at 9:30 am. Van fee is $10.
