The tour of Leiper’s Fork Distillery will make for an interesting morning — even if you don’t like whiskey. This 5000-square-foot distillery is the brainchild of Lee Kennedy. The tours and the tastings take place in a restored 2500 -square-foot log cabin — originally built in 1825! With one visit to
the distillery’s website, we became absorbed in its historical account of the manufacture of spirits in Williamson County. The story is fascinating, especially if you like history, and we hope the tour will include some of it. Join us Wed., Sept. 27! The tour and tasting costs $10. After we see the distillery, we’ll have lunch somewhere in Leiper’s Fork and browse some of the nearby shops. The van will leave the Center at 9 am. Van fee is: $8.

Volunteers will be here to spruce up the Center. Please help us make our volunteers feel welcome!
FiftyForward closes once each year for a staff retreat. The difference this year is that the retreat is being held here at the Center. The parking lot will be full, but the Center will be closed.
T
HE MOVIE,
“ALL SAINTS” is based on the true story of salesman-turned-pastor, Michael Spurlock, who trades in his corporate sales career to become a pastor. Unfortunately, his first assignment is to close a country church and sell the prime piece of land where it sits. Spurlock soon has a change of heart when the church starts to welcome refugees from Burma, and he finds himself working with the refugees to turn the land into a working farm to pay the church’s bills.
One of the most compelling aspects of this inspiring story (for us, anyway) is that it occurred in our own back yard: at the All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Smyrna, TN! Theatre websites are confusing but, the best we can tell, senior admission to the matinee is about $7. At newsletter printing-time, the movie has not opened yet. Show times have not been posted, so we are not exactly sure when we’ll leave the Center, but probably about 10:30. Note: Please confirm departure time with us by Friday, Sept. 1! We’ll have lunch at Farmers Family Restaurant before the movie. Van fee is $6.
The Maury County CourtAnd the coolest part is: Our house looms large in the center of guide will be Charlie Norman, the Columbia’s town square. The build- mayor of Maury County! ing was erected in 1903, and we After touring the courthouse, plan to tour it on Thurs., Sept. 21. we’ll enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants on the square. Like Puckett’s. Or, the Square Market Café, which has a great menu and makes a mean Hot Brown. There may be a taco shop. Then, we can burn our calories by visiting some shops on the square! The van leaves the Center at 9. Van fee is $7.
Member Luke Boyd worked in education for many years, serving at Webb School and, later, as headmaster of Battle Ground Academy. Though officially retired, Luke writes for several local publications, including The Herald. He is also the unofficial leader of the Center’s writers group, Writing, Etc. And Luke researches and writes the biographical “mystery founding father” monologues that we get to hear at our Independence Day celebrations! A storyteller by nature, Luke will be here on Thurs., Sept. 7 to share some of his experiences and unique takes on life, as only a storyteller can. Join us! Please make lunch reservations by Tuesday, Sept. 5.
Ali Huton, the new coordinator for the Tennessee State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), will join us with help for those new to Medicare by discussing such basic questions as: What are Medicare Part A and Part B? What is the difference between advantage plans and supplemental policies, and how do I know which is best for me? When should I enroll in the different Medicare parts? What options are available for prescription drug coverage? Can I get help in paying for my medicine? For those who have experience navigating the Medicare system, Ali will bring us up-to-date on recent changes. SHIP offers unbiased guidance and can be a great resource and ally. Please make lunch reservations by Tuesday, Sept. 26.
W
e are changing the format for Friday fitness classes beginning Fri., Sept. 1. That’s when we welcome Alisa Hinds aboard as our new Friday fitness instructor! Alisa will teach two classes on Fridays:
8:30 - 9:15 Zumba Gold 9:15 - 10 Stretch & Tone
Zumba is an aerobic fitness program with movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance. Zumba Gold is a low intensity version of that. While not yoga, Alisa’s Stretch and Tone class will achieve much the same results, exercise-wise, with an emphasis on core strengthening. We’ve heard good things about Alisa and believe she will make a great addition to our fitness program. Welcome Alisa!
