As an Exercise Specialist, Barb Batson understands body mechanics. She provides personal training and leads fitness classes, both aquatic and “on land.” And, while Barb does work with the general population, much of her work is with people who live with chronic conditions, including arthritis, fibromyalgia, diabetes, MS and Parkinson’s disease. That’s what brought Barb to our attention. That, and Gloria O’Steen’s ringing endorsement. Gloria says, “Barb is a sought after speaker on wellness lifestyles and provides lighthearted leadership to adult groups from
many perspectives.” Come hear Barb this Oct. 21st at Potluck. Lunch is at 11:30, and she will begin about noon. The Center provides the main course. Please bring a side dish.

T
he Red Hat Society is taking quite an excursion this month, to Historic Granville, a little town that’s in between Carthage and Cookeville, and surrounded on three sides by Cordell Hull Lake. The group will take a guided tour of The Sutton Homestead (est. 1865), which includes the Sutton home, an agriculture museum, a pioneer village — and more! Lunch will be at the T.B. Sutton General Store, a country store that has served people in the Granville community continuously since the 1800s. Plus — the drive itself! The women planned this trip for October just
so everyone could enjoy the fall foliage. The combined fee for the van, The Sutton Homestead tour and lunch is $22. (The cost is actually $30, but the Red Hats have used funds from the kitty to offset this figure.) The van will leave the Center at 8:45 a.m. on the 28th.
It is getting time for membership renewal for many of you. In the past you have paid membership dues for a calendar year (January – December). With our new scan in system, we have moved to a rolling membership. This means, for example, if you join in August of one year then your membership runs to August of the next year. When you scan your card at the front desk, it will remind you 28 days before your membership is due to expire. Membership cost is still $75 a year. In the past we have had a discount week but, due to budget restrictions, we can’t offer that anymore. The incentive this year is to renew during those 28 days so you will not be charged a $10 joining fee after that time period. Be watchful as you scan in and see staff to renew your membership. Scholarships and half scholarships are available. Please see me if you want to know more about these. I would also like to remind all you walkers and runners about Viva la Diva, Saturday, Nov. 21. You can choose to run or walk the 5k or — if you are one of those seasoned athletes — go for the gusto with the 10k or the combined 5k/10k. FiftyForward members receive a 20% discount by visiting www.vivaladivarun.org and entering code VIVASTAFF2015 at checkout.

We decided to double our pleasure and double our fun for this fall drive with a visit to two wineries along the Natchez Trace. Our first stop will be Keg Springs Winery in Hampshire, Tn, where we are scheduled for a tasting at 11. After sampling some of their wines, we’ll enjoy box lunches delivered by Mt. Pleasant Grille. The restaurant has given us
a choice of which kind of sandwich we’d like — pulled pork, chicken salad, or club. The lunch will cost $10. Note: When you sign up, please indicate which sandwich you prefer, and pay for the lunch. Close by in Hampshire is Natchez Hills Winery, and we’ll head there after lunch for an afternoon tasting. The Van will leave the Center at 9:30. Van fee is $11.
Keith Sargent began singing at the age of two with his family’s gospel group. Since then, he has worked with some of the biggest names in show business and appeared all over the world. Keith will perform at FiftyForward Knowles at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 19. He features
music from the 40s through the 80s and his show is reminiscent of classic entertainers like Sammy Davis, Jr. The cost of Keith’s performance is $3. We’ll stop someplace good for lunch on the way back. The Van will leave the Center at 9:30. Van fee is $5.
