(I
FIRST PERSON, FROM LIBBY): Lynn Barton has been my psychotherapist since 1986. In times of trouble over the years, I have sought and found wise counsel from her. You could say I trust Lynn with my life. In 2012, during our last sessions, I told Lynn about my mama dying in 2006, in Alive Hospice. It seemed to me that, if you don’t get to die at home, Alive Hospice is the next best place to be. And Lynn said, “Alive Hospice began with my husband. On our dining room table.” Now that was news to me. But I wasn’t surprised to learn that I can trust Lynn with my death also. Lynn’s husband, David Barton, N

is a psychiatrist. And Alive Hospice was indeed his brainchild. It’s a fascinating story, that begins in the 70s, when a group of people came together in the Barton’s home, to discuss ways they could improve the care of people with terminal illness. They were first-timers, really, and their meetings were the seeds of a grassroots movement from which Alive Hospice grew. Join us at Potluck, when Lynn and David will tell us the history of Alive Hospice. We’ll have lunch at 11:30, and Lynn and David will begin about noon. The Center provides the main course. Please bring a side dish. Note: Potluck will come a week early this month, on Wed., Nov. 14.

It’s that time of year again for our Pancake Breakfast, Bake Sale and Craft Fair, Sat., Dec. 1. We are excited to announce that Williamson Medical Center will be our event sponsor again! The breakfast, bake and craft sale will run from 7 to 10 a.m. It’s an all you can eat breakfast for $5. I would like to ask our members to help us again this year. We are going to presell tickets to the breakfast and I would like to ask each center member to sell 5 tickets. Preselling tickets will allow people who cannot attend the actual breakfast to still support our center. Please see any staff to pick up your envelope of tickets. We ask that you turn in your ticket sales money by Friday, Nov. 30. Calling all Bakers! We need your help at our Bake Sale. If you like to bake, dazzle us with your favorite homemade treat — from cookies, cakes, pies, cobblers, breads or other delicious goodies. Please deliver your goodies to the center on Friday, Nov. 30 by 3 p.m. It would be much appreciated if you could go ahead and price your items for the bake sale. Remember, this is a fundraiser for the center.

We are especially excited about our Veterans Celebration this year! Our featured speaker, Jimmy Gentry, is a WW II veteran, as well as a hometown hero. Jimmy grew up in Franklin and joined the Army when he graduated from high school in 1944. He toured Europe as a foot soldier, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was part of the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp. After military service, Jimmy graduated from college, and went on to have a long teaching career — and a 66-year coaching career — in Williamson County. Diane Dawson will play some fine music, and ROTC cadets from Page High School will post and retreat the colors. Special thanks go to Whitt’s Barbeque for sponsoring this event. Their support allows us to offer lunch free to veterans. For all others, lunch will cost $6. Please make lunch reservations by Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Before retiring, Art Reesman was a geology professor at Vanderbilt. On Nov. 29, he will give us a short geological presentation — and then discuss the rocks that we bring in! Do you have any special rocks that you’ve found and kept? Bring a few to this fun program, and Art will tell us all about them. Please make lunch reservations by Tues., Nov. 27.
