A COUPLE YEARS AGO, WE took a daytrip to The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald. We learned all about the sanctuary, its practices and its philosophy. We did not get to see the elephants but, in the end, we were not disappointed. The Elephant Sanctuary is one of the few true sanctuaries available for retired elephants. Among other special practices, it does not allow the public into where the elephants live.
Their presentation was quite fascinating. And, since so few of us can go on trips in the van, and we don’t get to see the elephants anyway, we thought: We should ask The Elephant Sanctuary to bring their presentation here to the Center. So we asked them. And they said Yes! Join us for lunch at 11:30 this November 16th. The program will begin about noon. The Center provides the main course. Please bring a side dish.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10 VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION We will honor our veterans on Thurs., Nov. 10 this year. The cornerstone of our program will be a spoken word tribute from members of our writers group, Writing, Etc. Marcella Baker, who always plays the piano so beautifully, will add music to the afternoon. And we have invited cadets from Page High School’s ROTC program to post and retreat the colors. Once again, Ford Lincoln of Franklin has generously sponsored this event, which allows us to offer lunch free to veterans and spouses of veterans. For all others, lunch will cost $5. We’ll bring in barbeque from Whitt’s. It’s especially helpful if we can get a good headcount for this meal, so please make your lunch reservations early!
On Tuesday, Nov. 8, student volunteers from Destination Imagination will come to the Center to offer oneon-one tech tutoring for Center members. Destination Imagination is a non-profit organization. Its purpose is to inspire and equip students to become innovators and leaders. What a great opportunity for intergenerational learning! Bring your tech gadgets — smart phones, tablets or laptops — and have an idea of what you want to learn to do on them. Student volunteers will be here from 9 to 11 am. Sign up for a 30-minute session.
