he Choraleers is a group of Be sure to be here, FiftyForward members whose mission is to take live music to those who don’t normally “go to” live music. In 2011, when they were between directors, someone heard Geno Heffner play the piano at the Knowles center. One thing led to another, and Geno has directed the Choraleers ever since.

since we’ve traveled to Ethridge, and the end of June makes for a perfect time to visit the Amish gardens and find the best veggies around. We’ll enjoy a good lunch somewhere along the way. The van will leave the Center on June 27, at 8:30 a.m. Van fee is $13.

Due to weather conditions on May 5, the Katie Reed Golf Classic has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 16. We are gearing up for the annual spring matching campaign. Great news: All donations received during the campaign will be matched dollar for dollar! The campaign will start at the end of May and run till June 30. As we all know, the cost of living continues to increase each year, so the center is having to make some adjustments in costs. The center has not increased its lunch prices in quite some time so, beginning in June, the cost of Thursday lunches will increase to $5. We will increase our special Thursday lunches, like Independence and Veterans Celebrations to $6. Please sign up for all Thursday lunch programs by the Tuesday before the program, so we will know how much food to prepare. We can’t guarantee there will be enough food for you on Thursday, if you don’t sign up ahead of time. We are also experiencing some issues with our monthly birthday potluck. If you plan to participate in potluck then you need to please bring a covered dish. We can no longer accept payment for those who don’t bring a dish. The center always provides the main dish for potlucks.

DAYTRIP TO WOODBURY RESCHEDULED FOR THURS., JUNE 7 Let us try, try again to visit Woodbury. It’ll be a nice ride — in our snazzy new bus! — and they say Woodbury is a great place to find antiques. At lunchtime we’ll gather at Southern Charm Café, which is inside the “Old Feed Store Antique Mall,” and comes highly recommended. The van will leave the Center at 9:15 on Thurs., June 7. Van fee is: $9.

HEAR FROM RICK WARWICK & TOUR THE OLD, OLD JAIL THURS., JUNE 21

“R

ICK

WARWICK IS A

A Pictorial History.” The book features pictures and illustrations depicting the 217-year history of the square Plus, Rick will tour us through the Old, Old Jail! The in the building is in downtown Franklin, conference room of the Heritage and served as Williamson County’s Foundation, third jail from 1941 until 1970. Today it’s home to the Heritage Foundation. We’ll probably head to Barbara’s Home Cookin’ for lunch. It’s a meat and three in Grassland. The van will leave the center at 9:15 am. Van fee is $6.

Technology professionals from Deloitte will return to the center on Tues., June 12 to help us with our technology questions. They’ll be here from 10 am until 1 pm. Whether you are new to technology or an experienced user, the volunteers can help you simplify the process. Please bring your device with you, i.e. phone, tablet, laptop, or camera. Here are some examples of the assistance Deloitte is ready to provide:  how to use your phone  how to take a selfie  how to understand your device better  tips on purchasing technology  how to set up and/or use your Facebook page  how to stay connected with family and friends through your device  email on a smart phone  understanding and using apps  taking and sending photos

We’ve never held regular bingo games, mainly because we lacked a sponsor for prizes. But then a center member suggested that we play bingo the way where everybody brings something from home to donate to the prize pool. What a great idea!

We’ve set bingo for first Monday afternoons, from 1 to 3, beginning June 4. Joy True will call the games. Bring a trinket or two and join the fun at 1. Better yet, make a day of it. Take Chair Class at 10:30 (it lasts about 45 minutes), and bring a sack lunch!

Why does one sibling get sick but not another? Why does a drug cure one patient, but only cause nasty side effects to the next? Finding out is a tall order. Today, diseases are typically treated based on what worked best in short studies of a few thousand, or even a few hundred, patients. “We depend on the average, the one-size-fits-all approach because it’s the best we’ve got,” said Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health. In a quest to end cookiecutter health care, the NIH’s A ll of Us research program seeks one million participants, and aims to run for at least ten years. All of Us seeks not only genetic information, but also information about other factors that affect genetic risk, such as what you eat, how you sleep, and if you grew up in smog or fresh air. Not to

mention differences based on age, gender, race and ethnicity, and socioeconomics. Layering all that information in what’s expected to be the largest database of its kind could help scientists spot patterns, and combinations of factors that drive or prevent certain diseases — and eventually lead to better care. If you would like to sign up, but don’t want to deal with the computer — no worries! We have a solution for you! All of Us representatives from FiftyForward will come to the center to facilitate our enrollment, on second Mondays, beginning June 11. The enrollment process should take about 90 minutes, give or take. On June 11, we have two appointments at 10 am, and two more at 12:30 pm.

THURSDAY, JUNE 14 NAME THAT TUNE WITH HUMANA Do you remember Name That Tune? The original game show ran on prime time from 1953 to 1959. Contestants tested their knowledge of songs, and wagered: “I can name that tune in [however many] notes.” Our friends from Humana will be here on Thurs., June 14, and lead us through a group version of Name That Tune. This lighthearted program should be a lot of fun. Join us! Please make lunch reservations by Tuesday, June 12.

Registration: 7 a.m. Shotgun Start: 8 a.m.

THURSDAY, JUNE 28 INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION “MYSTERY FOUNDING FATHER” SPEAKS We’ve heard from Ben Franklin, Thomas Paine, Patrick Henry and John Paul Jones in recent years. Who will this year’s mystery founding father be? Historian Luke Boyd, and actor Herb Wallace have made our Independence Celebration such a fun event. Luke chooses a founding father, researches him, and then writes a first-person monologue from him. On the day of our celebration, Herb Wallace delivers the speech in full period costume, revealing the founding father’s identity at the end (with clues along the way). Special thanks to Wayne Barnes and Benjamin Franklin Plumbing for sponsoring this event. Lunch will cost $6 this day only. We are bringing in barbeque. Please make lunch reservations by Tues., June 26.
