in the spot where Fast Greenery in Arrington now sits. In August that year, Jean Fast and her family moved in. Her husband, Bob, along with their sons, and his father, proceeded to build three greenhouses on that spot, and Fast Greenery opened in November with house plants and poinsettias. “We sold about fifteen or twenty!” Jean remembers, with a smile. In the spring of 1976, they offered a variety of vegetable seedlings and bedding plants, and the young nursery was on its way. Sadly, and unexpectedly, Bob Fast died in 1979, but Jean and her family continued to own, operate and
expand the business for another 27 years. In 2006, Jean sold the operation to its current owners, Reid and Shirley Batsel. Still thriving today, with 14 greenhouses, Fast Greenery is one of the most popular nurseries in the community. Join us for Potluck this April 19th, when John Flannery from Fast’s demonstrates how to create interesting mixed planters. We’ll have lunch at 11:30, and John will begin about noon. The Center provides the main course. Please bring a side dish.
WED., APRIL 26 RED HATTERS HEAD TO MT. PLEASANT Downtown Mt. Pleasant is in the midst of being revitalized. The quiet little town is restoring many of its historic buildings and, in the process, bringing new business to its town square. One of the new stores we plan to check out is Jernigan’s on Main. It’s a new home décor and re-purposed furniture store, owned by the daughter of
former center member, Marie Eden. We’ll investigate some other shops and the area in general — and enjoy lunch at Mt. Pleasant Grille. The van will leave the center at 9:30. Van fee is: $9.
