May the new year bring you JOY As 2020 comes to a close, we want to take a moment to wish you all a joyous holiday season. We hope you can find just that – joy – in a year where it might have felt lost at times. Our members, and the joy they bring into our lives daily, continue to fuel us in our mission of serving older adults. We are thankful for YOU! 2020 was a year with a lot of uncertainty, and a year where quickly adapting to change and embracing a new normal were paramount. We are proud and grateful that as an agency, during this COVID period, we were able to: • Provide nearly 17,000 meals, over 1,200 bags of shelfstable groceries and approximately to 1,340 Second Harvest food boxes; • Make more than 14,750 wellness calls to members; • Offer more than 375 virtual programs; • Visit more than 100 members through Front Yard Chats; • Welcome and say hello to more than 2,000 members at our center Beep-and-Greet events. The value and importance of social interaction and staying connected with peers is apparent now more than ever. We hope you continue to take advantage of what your FiftyForward membership offers and all the ways we bring members together both in-person and virtually. As we look at the year ahead, we also hope you’ll encourage others who aspire to lead more fulfilling lives through innovative programs and services to join us, too! The many benefits of a FiftyForward membership moving forward include: • Access to in-person and virtual programs, groups, and events at our centers; • Access to Supportive Care programs such as Victory Over Crime, and a Care Management team, who can assist with day-to-day obstacles including limited resources (social
•
and financial), functional limitations, and isolation; Connection to meals and grocery assistance through FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels.
And coming in January 2021 – a new online membership portal! We’ll divulge all the information you need to know about this new membership portal in our January newsletter, but here’s a sneak peek at some offerings it will include: • Membership management (you’ll be able to renew your membership and sign up online); • A video library where you can watch FiftyForward programs and classes at your convenience, in areas including: fitness, health & wellness, arts & crafts, lifelong learning, resources, and entertainment; • Event and program registration online; • An easy-to-read calendar of events and programs across all centers; • An opt-in private membership directory so you can easily connect with other FiftyForward members; • And more! We are excited to unveil this new membership portal next month, so until then, our wish for you is that you find hope, love, and joy in this holiday season. We look forward to celebrating and welcoming a new year with all of you in 2021!

Reporting Elder Abuse in Tennessee Abuse of older and vulnerable adults is against the law, and Tennessee is a "mandatory reporting" state. Most incidents of elder abuse, however, sadly go unreported. For every case of elder abuse reported to the authorities, an estimated 24 cases go unreported. If you see abuse or suspect that an adult is being abused, neglected, or exploited, you must report it. If the abuse is a lifethreatening emergency, call 911. Otherwise, call Adult Protective Services toll free at 1-888-277-8366 or contact your local law enforcement agency. You can also report online at https://reportadultabuse.dhs.tn.gov/. If the abuse is occurring in a long-term care facility, call the Long-Term Care Ombudsman at 1-877-236-0013.

Do you help take care of an adult with chronic conditions? If so, you are not alone. Over 43.5 million family caregivers in America provide a vast array of emotional, financial, nursing, social, homemaking and other services on a daily or an intermittent basis. Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational series designed to provide tools you need to take care of yourself. If you take good care of yourself, you will be better prepared to take good care of your loved one. As a participant you will learn how to: reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate your feelings, balance your life, increase ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources. Classes consist of six, 90-minute sessions held once a week on Zoom. Two experienced leaders conduct each class. Interactive lessons, discussions and brainstorming help you take the “tools” you choose and put them into action for your life. FiftyForward is excited to support the family caregivers in our community and sponsor the Powerful Tools for Caregivers class on Zoom in early 2021. We would love to hear from you if are interested in participating or would like more information.
