FiftyForward RSVP has been WOWED by the terrific response to the new Flower Power Brigade Program. Initiated by RSVP Outreach Coordinator Liane Proctor (Left), Flower Power takes donated flowers that were headed for the dumpster and uses volunteer power to transfer them into bouquets. Each Tuesday one of the following programs is the beneficiary of these wonderful bouquets creatively packaged in recycled water bottles and carried in recycled beverage caddies: FiftyForward Meals on Wheels, FiftyForward Adult Day Services, FiftyForward Bordeaux and the Heimerdinger Foundation’s Meals 4 Health and Healing.

Mrs. Jones has been a member with FiftyForward for two years. She was raised in Moss Point, Mississippi, graduating from Magnolia High School.

In 1965, following her graduation, she moved to Nashville to study Business Administration at TSU.

MEMBERSHIP New and existing FiftyForward members are being asked to complete brand new applications for 2017. These forms have some additional information needed for record keeping purposes mandated by our funding agencies.

A big thanks to the HCA volunteers who gave their time to improve our Bordeaux Center and to Center Director Melvin Fowler for coordinating this effort.

Reminder: Invite your friends, family, neighbors, and other community members to join.

Her hobbies include traveling, word puzzles, meeting and greeting, and general fellowship here at the FiftyForward Bordeaux Center. She is still a loyal TSU fan, especially football and basketball.. Go Big Blue! Additionally, she is beginning to develop an interest in tennis.

Her favorite types of music include R&B and jazz. She is a huge fan of classics such as The O’Jays, Smokey Robinson, and Gladys Knight.

Annual membership: $120.00.

Scholarships are available!

She went on to work at Metro Nashville General Hospital, serving as an admitting clerk and patient account representative for 35 years before retiring in 2004.

She is an active member at Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she volunteers as a ministry usher, pace matron, and in the Lord’s Kitchen. She also contributes her time to the Meals on Wheels program. She is divorced and has 2 sons.

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

Ingredients:



1 (5 to 6 pound) roasting chicken



Kosher salt



Freshly ground black pepper



1 large bunch fresh thyme, plus 20 sprigs



1 lemon, halved



1 head garlic, cut in half crosswise



2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter, melted



1 large yellow onion, thickly sliced



4 carrots cut into 2-inch chunks



1 bulb of fennel, tops removed,

Remove the chicken giblets. Rinse the chicken inside and out. Remove any excess fat and leftover pin feathers and pat the outside dry. Liberally salt and pepper the inside of the chicken. Stuff the cavity with the bunch of thyme, both halves of lemon, and all the garlic. Brush the outside of the chicken with the butter and sprinkle again with salt and pepper. Tie the legs together with kitchen string and tuck the wing tips under the body of the chicken. Place the onions, carrots, and fennel in a roasting pan. Toss with salt, pepper, 20 sprigs of thyme, and olive oil.

Spread around the bottom of the roasting pan and place the chicken on top.

Roast the chicken for 1 1/2 hours, or until the juices run clear when you cut between a leg and thigh. Remove the chicken and vegetables to a platter and cover with aluminum foil for about 20 minutes. Slice the chicken onto a platter and serve it with the vegetables.
