Eddie Kilgallon is back! Join us Wednesday, April 23 for Eddie

K’s “Springtime, Songs and Stories” concert! This is an event you do not want to miss! Eddie will be featuring his Mother’s Day

song and a song he wrote for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Eddie travels with the well-known country band “Montgomery Gentry”

when he is not out performing at senior centers in Middle Tennessee.

This concert is FREE! We will have sponsors, door prizes, desserts and great fellowship! The Palm Tree Café will be offering yet another fabulous $5 lunch.

Make sure you sign up in the front office because space will be limited. The concert begins at 10 a.m. and will end at noon.

APRIL TRIPS AND EVENTS National Walking Day - Wed., April 2. The American Heart Association ’s National Walking Day encourages Americans to lace up their sneakers and take 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It ’s a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to get your family, friends and co-workers started on a healthier way of life. Let ’s get together at 9 am in the front lobby and get our WALK on!!! Free! Please sign up in the front office.

Close up with the Candidates -Wed., April 2. FiftyForward ’s Government Affairs Committee has invited all registered candidates for the May primary to meet with you and answer questions. This will be held at the FiftyForward Patricia Hart building. We will leave the center at 1 pm. The cost for the van is $5.

McKay Used Book Store and Lunch -Thurs., April 3. McKay Used Books, CD ’s and More is a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. Every visit to McKay ’s is a unique adventure! After McKay’s, we will head to Jim-N-Nick’s BBQ. We will leave the center at 9:30 am, and the van cost is $6.

“Before you Pack the Boxes” -Tues., April 8. Join Professional Organizer Susan Gardner for another FREE educational seminar. This is great for anyone who is planning to or thinking of moving. Learn how to decrease your stress and increase ease while planning your move.

Preparation, focus and moving day issues will all be addressed in Susan ’s presentation. This is FREE, but you must sign up in the front office. This seminar will be held from 6-7:30 pm.

Trader Joe’s/Whole Foods – Wed., April 9. Two of our favorite Green Hill’s shopping joints! Come join us for shopping and lunch! Cost for the van is $5. We will leave the center at 10:30 am.

Egghunt – Thurs., April 10. Meet in the front lobby for an egg hunt! We will search for eggs hidden inside the building. Lots of goodies to be found! Make sure to sign up in the front office. The egg hunt will begin at 9:45 am.

Mystery Lunch with James – Fri., April 11. Join James and the gang and head out to an undisclosed location. Leave the center at 10:45 am. The cost for the van is $5.

Senior Helpers “Stages of Dementia” -Tues., April 15 at 9:45 am. Kathy Warner returns with another educational presentation on “The Stages of Dementia”. Kathy has shared so much great information in her prior two presentations. Do not miss it! Make sure you sign up in the front office.

Lunchbunch -Wed., April 16. We are going to Chef ’s Market in Goodlettsville. This place is awesome!! Chef ’s Market has catered many events in Nashville and was voted Nashville ’s best caterer in the Nashville Scene in 2011, 2012, and 2013. Come check it out with us! We will leave the center at 10:45 am. The cost for the van is $5.

Music for Seniors - Thurs., April 17. Join us for our FREE Daytime Concert featuring The Ukedelics.

This will be held at the FiftyForward Martin Center in Brentwood. We will leave the center at 1:15 pm and the cost for the van is $5.

Hiking Club-Mon., April 21. We are going to hike the Korean Veterans Bridge. We will park at the Copper Kettle and walk down to the bridge that takes you to the Titan ’s Stadium. We will leave the center at 9:30 am. Cost for the van is $5.

Farmer’s Market – Tues., April 22. The Nashville Farmer ’s Market is home to farmers, artisans, restaurateurs and local business merchants. Early spring produce should be plentiful! Let’s go shopping and enjoy some yummy lunch at one of the many restaurants. We will leave the center at 10 am. The cost for the van is $5.

Eddie K. Concert and Lunch - Wed., April 23 from 10 am until noon. Eddie K. is someone you do not want to miss. This FREE concert rates high on the entertainment scale. The Palm Tree Café will be serving a lunch for $5. Make sure to sign up in the office for this event. Seating is limited.

Supper Club – Thurs., April 24. The group is heading to Demos ’ where they offer exceptional food with authentic ingredients at quality prices. If you have not tried this restaurant, you need to join us!

We will leave the center at 5 pm. The cost for the van is $5.

Flea Market at the Fairgrounds - Fri., April 25. The Nashville Flea Market is considered to be among the top ten flea markets in the country. Vendors from 30 states offer a variety of gifts, antiques, collectibles, jewelry, art, crafts and so much more to the buying public.

We will leave the center at 9:30 am. The cost for the van is $5.

Victory Over Crime Presentation - Mon., April 28. Terry Kornman, Outreach Coordinator from FiftyForward ’s Victory Over Crime Program, will be here educating those who have been victims of a crime and also how to avoid becoming a victim of a crime. This FREE event begins at 9:45 am.

FREE CPR Class - Tues., April 29 from 9am - 12:30 pm. You must sign up in the front office.

This class is usually $50 per person but we are offering it for FREE. The only cost is $5 for the certification card that will be payable to the American Heart Association. Sign up today!!!

Square 1 Fitness Presentation - Wed., April 30. Square 1 fitness’ purpose is to maximize your genetic potential through the use of their individualized programs that are tailored specifically to each individual. If you are ready to make a change, come and listen to this presentation. This is FREE and begins at 9:45 am.

Spanish I Summit Audiology will be here the third Wednesday of each month performing FREE screenings to all of our members.

They will be here on April 16 from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. Make sure to make an appointment in the front office.

Starts Monday, April 7 from 10 am until 12 pm.

You will learn the basics of Spanish language, pronunciation, vocabulary, greetings, colors, numbers and food.

Cost is $10 for members.

Many people do not realize they are living with hearing loss and that an untreated hearing loss could lead to early onsets of Dementia and Alzheimer’s.

FREE CPR TRAINING FOR MEMBERS This is a fantastic opportunity for all members and staff of FiftyForward. This will be held on Tuesday, April 29 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. YES, you MUST stay for the entire duration of this class if you would like to earn your certification. The AMR (American Medical Response) team will be here to show us how to properly perform CPR on another individual. This is a great educational experience.

Please consider this opportunity. Make sure to sign up in the front office so we know how many people plan to attend.

We need Bridge Players!

Our Tuesday Social Bridge group is looking for more players to join them. No experience is necessary. This is such a great way to meet other members and to keep your mind moving. They meet from 10am until 2pm. All you have to do is show up!

Basic Computer Skills Saturdays, April 5 – 26, 9-11 am.

Students will learn Windows 7 Navigation, how to search and save files, how to pin and unpin applications and documents to the Start Menu and to the Taskbar.

Students MUST sign up and pay for this class in the office.

Basic Computer Class Mondays, April 7 - 28, 10 am - 12 pm.

Same as the Saturday class above. Make sure to sign up and pay in the front office.

Facebook Class - Saturdays, May 3 - 24, 9-11am. Learn how to navigate through one of the most popular social media sites. You will learn how to build your own profile, add photos, communicate with friends on Facebook and much more. This is a great way to keep in contact with your children, grandchildren, and other family members. Students MUST sign up and pay in the front office.

Twitter – Saturdays, June 7 – 28.

9-11 am. Learn about this online social networking and micro blogging service that enables users to send and read “tweets” which are text messages limited to 140 characters. Registered users can read and post tweets but unregistered users can only read them. There are over 500 million registered users on Twitter. Come find out what this craze is all about. Please sign up and pay in the front office.

Program Director Notes...

Thank you to everyone for making my first month at FiftyForward Donelson Station a wonderful one! I am so grateful for the warm welcome and for lots of grace as I learn names, programs and so much more! I am very excited about being here and plan to work hard to make your center the best it can be. If you have ideas or concerns, please call or stop by to talk with me or attend the monthly Advisory Council meetings.

With spring comes renewal so here is a final chance to renew your membership for 2014! Even if your key card works, you may not be up to date on your membership. Please check with the staff if you are unsure. Remember, membership fees help keep the center open and the lights on.

Please notice the new handicapped parking signs out front. Many thanks to Larry Keeton for purchasing the signs and having them installed. Please leave these parking spots for those who need it and be aware that Metro Police can come onto the property and ticket cars that do not have proper tags. We appreciate your cooperation.

Lastly, remember that the recycling bins in the back are for your use, but the trash dumpster is for the center only. If you notice anyone illegally dumping in either area, please contact staff.

We are going to have a blood drive on April 26 for two children from Donelson that have been diagnosed with Leukemia.

Anyone 18 and older may be a blood donor. They will also be performing bone marrow matches by swabbing the inside of your mouth. Ages for the bone marrow match are 18-44 years old. Please come out and help us support this event.

The jewelry classes are looking for used pill bottles to put their stones in. Please peel off any labels and bring us your empty pill bottles. You can drop them off at the front office.

If anyone is interested in strength training, please make an appointment with me before you come to this class. I will need to go over what it is we actually do in this class and have you perform some of the exercises. My office is located in the front across from the main office.

Lastly, we are starting back up the “Walk With Ease” program that is through the Arthritis Foundation. This will begin on Wednesday, April 2. This is all about accountability, fitness, getting your heart rate up and moving those joints. We will walk for 15-45 minutes, three times per week. Meet in the front lobby on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m. On Fridays we will be joining the walking club at the Kohl’s greenway at 8:15 a.m. All you have to do is show up! It’s fun to talk and walk with others. You can walk in pairs or with a group of friends. Hope to see you there!

FREE Event Section National Lifesavers Conference - Saturday, April 26 from 1:15p.m.3p.m. Place: Gaylord Opryland Hotel, 2800 Opryland Drive, Nashville TN 37214. Ollie Jackson, from the Highway Safety Committee, is looking for 20 drivers (55 and older) who are able to volunteer their time to help Car-Fit Techs become certified in senior safety. These volunteers will help demonstrate the proper way to fit a seatbelt (they will do this with the help of a car-Fit Tech) and other safety procedures.
