EATING

HEALTHY

FiftyForward Bordeaux members, working with the TSU Extension Program, learned how to grow and maintain a community vegetable garden while simultaneously learning how to improve diet through better nutrition and physical activity. The instructors teach how to plan a garden, plant crops, prepare and test soil; manage disease, insects, and weeds; irrigate; safely use gardening tools; as well as harvesting, preparing and preserving produce. Members grew different types of vegetables including cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplants, green beans, peppers, squash and herbs and learned how to prepare them in healthy ways.

EMBRACING OUR STRENGTH

FiftyForward Donelson continues to focus on physical fitness in its list of offerings and participants continue to see improvements in their mobility, inner and outer strength and spirit. Many regular attendees in the strength training classes have reached personal bests – holding plank positions for more than a minute, increasing flexibility as well as a shared sense of camaraderie with their fellow workout mates.

FiftyForward College Grove provided a 12-week personal training pilot program for its members to improve balance and functional muscle strength.

WE ARE FOCUSED ON OUR HEALTH & WELLNESS TO STRENGTHEN MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT “I started exercising at the center 25 years ago and that has had a positive effect on my health and outlook.”

EMBRACING THE SPIRIT OF LEARNING

FiftyForward Knowles launched a program aimed at inter-generational learning. They partnered with Our Cottage Cove for a 6-week series of classes where second and third graders joined older adults to enjoy games, art, music, dancing, and other fun activities together. They also partnered with the Metropolitan Nashville Public Library to develop a Digital Literacy Program for its members. The program ran for two different sessions: the first session taught members how to use their Android smartphones; the second session focused on laptops.

SUPPORTIVE CARE SERVICES

FiftyForward Adult Day Services served 47 people ranging in ages 57 - 94 and consisting of 15 men, 32 women.

FiftyForward Care Team helped 15 individuals and families by assessing their needs and providing ongoing care management (assistance in locating in-home resources, selecting residential options, accompaniment to doctor’s appointments, etc.).

FiftyForward Living at Home Care Management served 446 low income older adults across 34 ZIP codes in Davidson and Williamson counties.

FiftyForward Victory over Crime assisted 33 individuals across 14 ZIP codes in Davidson County, ranging in ages 53 - 93, who were victims of crimes ranging from financial exploitation to assault.

FiftyForward Victory Over Crime staff presented programs three times at FiftyForward Donelson Station, speaking to members about staying safe online, out in public and in their own homes. One of our longtime members had a financial dispute with a Nashville roofing company, and the Victory Over Crime team is working on the case to recover her money. Now she is grateful for this free resource available to any older adult 50+ in Davidson County who may be victimized.

served 135 homebound older adults 19,104 midday, evening and/or weekend meals. More than 300 people received a hot holiday meal on Thanksgiving and Christmas. We continued our holiday partnership with Nashville CARES by providing 200 meals for their volunteers to deliver to their customers on each holiday.

FiftyForward Conservatorship program was court-appointed to serve 53 people in Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, and Wilson counties making decisions involving healthcare, end of life planning, residential options, finances and investments, etc.

The Office of Volunteer Engagement offers a central coordination point to connect interested volunteers, corporate, student and civic groups with opportunities across the entire FiftyForward system. The FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is also located in the Office of Volunteer Engagement.

Carol Ranier (above), who serves MNPS school Rocketship Northeast, was honored with the Mable Hopwood Award for Excellence. She has served in the program since 2012. The Mable Hopwood Award was created to honor the loving spirit and hard work of Mrs. Mable Hopwood, a former Foster Grandparent volunteer.

For more than 53 years, FiftyForward has sponsored the Foster Grandparent Program. This year, more than 70 “granny” volunteers, 55-95 years young, provided 67,860 hours of tutoring and mentoring services (20 hrs/week) to1800 at-risk children at 15 volunteer stations in Metropolitan Nashville Public (MNPS) and Charter Schools. The work of each volunteer focuses on education while integrating the goals of improved school readiness, early literacy, and social/emotional skill building. Every child showed gains in two or more areas, due to the love and attention received from a Foster Grandparent Volunteer.

The FiftyForward RSVP signature volunteer program Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) boasted 130 tutors who served 477 students for a total of 4,494 hours across 32 schools. Approximately 85% of the children we tutored met their academic goals; 89% improved their self-esteem and 97% of tutors indicated that being part of the FLIP program helped them make a positive difference in a child’s life.

Another milestone was celebrated this year as Foster Granny Clara “Penny” Copeland retired after serving for 25 years!

WE ARE GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH ENGAGEMENT

OPPORTUNITY NOW Growth of inter-generational volunteer engagement/Opportunity NOW FiftyForward was honored to be one of

the Nashville agencies to join in Mayor Megan Barry’s initiative, Opportunity NOW, to give high school students a chance at employment. Over the summer, several students worked across the agency to learn “soft” skills needed in the workplace as well as to gain valuable experience working with older adults.

Thomas Thompson, a Stratford High School student who was “adopted” by the “grandparents” he interacted with at FiftyForward Bordeaux, explained the benefits of Opportunity NOW on many levels when he said, “I have turned into a young man and not some kid from the hood ...”

EMBRACING AGING AGING MASTERY PROGRAM®

Developed by the National Council on Aging (NCOA), this program was offered at all seven of our FiftyForward lifelong centers in Davidson and Williamson counties. FiftyForward members participated in these classes for free as a result of a generous grant received from the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.

The goal of the Aging Mastery Program® is to empower older adults to make and maintain small but impactful changes in their life. The topics explored navigating longer lives, physical activity, sleep, healthy eating and hydration, financial fitness, medication management, advanced planning, healthy relationships, falls prevention, and community engagement. Participants received basic educational materials developed by NCOA along with a facilitator’s expertise in the subject area. Participants also received a manual with a checklist of potential next steps and a system for tracking behaviors.

They earned points for positive actions and rewards that culminated in a FiftyForward center-wide graduation ceremony.

FiftyForward Madison Station presented two innovative programs to offer their members the chance to expand their knowledge of different cultures.

The first program, called “Go East,” highlighted the many ancient wellness practices from eastern cultures including EFT tapping, yoga, tai chi, qigong, and Reiki. Members participated in demonstrations and learned about the healing powers of these ancient practices.

FiftyForward Donelson Station hosted “A Seat at the Table” event for their members.

The second program, “A Seat at the Table,” was hosted by members of the Our Muslim Neighbor Initiative and was designed to advance a more accurate and representative understanding of Islam and American Muslims. Nadia Crank, who led the project, brought along several community members to dine with FiftyForward Madison Station members as they all shared their views on life, faith, and culture with an open heart and mind. Members have requested the return of these two programs in the future.

WE ARE LEARNING ABOUT OTHER CULTURES FiftyForward Donelson Station plans more than 30 trips per year to different shopping, education and recreational destinations. This year the center expanded the horizons of several members by taking them to different places of worship including a Nashville mosque. One member visited the mosque with preconceived ideas about how Muslims worship.

Today, he has an open mind to different religious experiences.

FiftyForward was one of 20 nonprofits chosen from 103 applicants featured on the inaugural season of Our Nashville, a NECATproduced television series featuring local nonprofit organizations. The FiftyForward program was produced and shot by 20 trained Metro Public High School students who receive training by NECAT staff in this hands-on production process. CARD CRUSADERS

FiftyForward Martin Center Card Crusaders continue to grow their cottage industry, raising funds for their beloved center and visibility for FiftyForward. In addition to being sold at the Nashville International Airport, they have added two more selling sites: Nashville Zoo and the Chattanooga Zoo. Purchase cards at the center and support FiftyForward.

Crowdfunding for wheelchair accessible buses/rolling billboards Our first crowdfunding campaign was a success! We raised more than $60,000 and were able to purchase two buses for our centers. This spring, we upped the visibility by wrapping our buses with member photos so we now have “rolling billboards.”

LOCALLY HARVESTED HONEY AT FIFTYFORWARD MARTIN CENTER For several years FiftyForward Martin Center has been selling local honey harvested from multiple bee hives located near the center. Center members took a trip to the home of the “Queen Bee” Mindy Brodbeck for a presentation “from Hive to Home.” There was so much interest in the science of bee keeping that Mindy and her business partner brought a hive to the center. It is now on the grounds at FiftyForward Martin Center so members can watch the bees and their activity from the safety of the patio behind the center.

Two centers instituted awards to celebrate the contributions of their fellow members.

FiftyForward Madison Station created the R.A.C (Random Acts of Citizenship) Award to recognize those individuals who consistently give above and beyond to others in the center, without serving on a committee or without being asked. This year’s recipient, T.C. Castleman (pictured left), makes coffee every morning for members to enjoy. He often helps out at the center setting out chairs for others and dutifully putting them up at the end of the day.

Ukulele player and FiftyForward Donelson Station member Bert Kowrach won the center’s first talent show in fall 2016, but then took it a step further by offering to teach others to play the tiny, twangy instrument. Center members have been meeting for almost a year now with up to seven musicians meeting each Friday. They plan to perform in this year’s talent show as a group.

FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center recognized member Rise Tucker with the Robert J. Franz Memorial Award for Volunteer Service and Advocacy. Tucker (pictured below) leads and instructs Retro Rhythms, the center’s rhythm/percussion band that performs regularly at the center, and is a tireless advocate for the center’s programming.

WE ARE CHAMPIONING NEW EXPERIENCES Members of FiftyForward Madison Station Hiking Club ventured to Shelby Bottoms Greenway and discovered B-Cycles — bikes for rent. They enjoyed a nice bike ride through the parkway.

DISCOVERING OUR WORLD NEAR AND FAR Through FiftyForward Travel, more than 200 older adults participated in trips within the United States (Florida, Georgia, Texas) and to international locales (Canada, Japan, Egypt, Panama Canal). In addition, more than 500 individuals participated in the popular daytrip program On the Road with Joan traveling to local and regional destinations.

Nashville songwriter and golf enthusiast Barry Coggins launched an effort combining his interests of music and golf to support and raise funds for FiftyForward Meals on Wheels. Coggins, a longtime volunteer of 20+ years, plays host to the annual golf tournament, writer’s night showcase and the fun-filled “Barry-oke” night.
