The FiftyForward staff and volunteers are in the middle of strategic planning to assess our operations and refine our business strategies taking into consideration community needs and how we can continue to best serve the ever-growing and booming demographic of older adults.

The outcomes of the FiftyForward Strategic Plan will help guide our direction for the next 3-5 years. FiftyForward Signature Events (at our centers and in our programs)

Signature events and annual fundraisers continue to bring new and exciting opportunities to our center members and program participants. Each event not only serves as a publicity vehicle for

FiftyForward College Grove: Back by popular demand following a four-year hiatus, the Katie Reed Golf Classic was reinstated. The event was a success on many levels including when Reed, 90, solidly sunk a putt on one of the more difficult holes.

FiftyForward Donelson Station: The annual Fall Festival and BBQ continued to be a crowd pleaser marking its 29th year.

FiftyForward Madison Station: The 16th annual Whistlestop was again emceed by longtime friend of FiftyForward Lelan Statom of NewsChannel 5. Cornelia Laux was named Senior of the Year.

FiftyForward Martin Center: The center marked its 19th anniversary and its fall signature event, Martin Masters, fine art show and sale marked its tenth year.

Ron York of York & Friends Fine Art was this year’s host bringing with him more than 40 acclaimed artists.

Some of last year’s signature events at the center level include: The FiftyForward Martin Center summer fundraiser, Music and Memories, featured Grammy-award winner singer/ songwriter Amy Grant who, for the second consecutive year, performed to a sold-out and appreciative audience. This year, Grant brought a full band and a number of longtime fans traveled from across the United States just for her performance.

FiftyForward Meals on Wheels: Thanks to longtime (20+ year) volunteer Barry Coggins, a golf tournament, songwriter night and karaoke – called Barryoke – all offered visibility for the program and brought in donations from family and friends.

Signature Events to support the overall agency include: The 27th annual Crown Affair, the Fall for FiftyForward Breakfast and the 5th annual Viva la Diva (5K and 10K) with longtime premier sponsor Nissan, rounded out the list of agency signature fundraising events. The three Crowning Achievement Award honorees were: Beth Alexander (l), Kim Harvey Looney (r) and Dr. Paul Teschan. Dollar General was awarded the Corporate Crowning Achievement Award.

NEW MEMBERS Nearly 841 new members joined the FiftyForward family of centers from July 2015-June 2016. Members range from age 50 to 100+ with the largest membership sectors being between 65-79 years old Many members are on limited income and depend on scholarships to attend the centers. Membership at most FiftyForward centers is $10 a month.

FiftyForward Knowles shared an interesting statistic. Its members come from 27 ZIP codes and range in age from 50 to 92.

In fact, many of our centers boast similar statistics. This kind of diversity brings together people of different backgrounds to create a unique and thriving culture.

Center Events and Engagement: From July 2015-June 2016, there were 17,103 individual events and activities offered at FiftyForward centers. In categories ranging from community; education and lifelong learning; health

and wellness; physical fitness/exercise;

games; recreation/travel as well as

volunteer opportunities, center members had plenty of activities to individual events help them stay active, and activities learn and engage in what life has to offer.

Center volunteers have an impact. More than 22,000 hours were donated by volunteers from (July 2015-June 2016) at our centers offering an estimated value of $204,000.

Center members also engage in friendly competition. In the first annual FiftyForward Donelson Station versus FiftyForward Madison Station softball game, the challenge was not so much about winning or losing but having fun. Players ranged in age from staff members in their 20s to members in their 90s. A couple of center members were playing for the first time including a woman, from Ireland, who now calls Donelson home.

Innovative Arts: The FiftyForward Bordeaux Drum Ensemble has performed at numerous center events. Members range in age from their 60s to 100+ and say they are always looking for their next “gig.�

FiftyForward Choraleers, based out of FiftyForward Knowles, launched more than 40 years ago and continues to thrive by bringing its music to new communities for peer-to-peer singalongs.

Members of FiftyForward Madison Station Loose Caboose and FiftyForward Donelson Station Prime Time Players continue to offer unique performances for the community.

FiftyForward Martin Center Card Crusaders continue to impress with new designs to support local businesses. To date, they have more than 80 card designs.

Health and Fitness

FiftyForward Supportive Care Services FiftyForward Adult Day Services served 47 individuals in the program last fiscal year. Of those attendees, ranging from 56-94 years old, 14 were men and 34 were women.

Gloria Jones, age 68, joined FiftyForward Donelson Station in June 2015. After she had both knees replaced and back surgery, her doctor said she needed to be more active to get healthy.

With her determined and positive attitude, she immediately started attending Zumba classes twice a week. She found the class challenging and fun. By combining dance moves and upbeat music to give her a workout Gloria said the program left her sweating and laughing at the same time. She soon added the Beginner’s Strength Training Class to her regimen. At first she thought the class might be too much as she often had trouble getting down on the floor and then back up. However, she heeded the advice of the instructor to “do what you can” and now has no trouble with most of the exercises. In FY2016, Gloria participated in more than 200 exercise classes, an average of three per week. She says she has more energy and feels better about herself. Plus, she’s made friends and lost a few pounds!

FiftyForward Care Team assisted 19 individuals and their families with an assessment of needs and to provide ongoing care management (assistance in locating in-home resources, selecting residential options, accompaniment to doctor’s appointments, etc.)

FiftyForward Conservatorship served 55 individuals in Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford and Wilson Counties.

Appointed by the court, FiftyForward Conservatorship makes decisions regarding the health care, end of life planning, residential options, finances and investments, etc., for older adults who can no longer do so for themselves.

FiftyForward Living at Home Care Management served 348 individuals across 33 ZIP codes in Davidson and Williamson counties, 82% of clients served were 60 years of age or older.

FiftyForward Meals on Wheels provided food and safety checks to 116 homebound older adults.

Throughout the fiscal year, these individuals received a total of 16,785 midday, evening and/or weekend meals.

More than 300 people received hot holiday meals on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

FiftyForward Victory Over Crime helped 35 individuals, who were victims of crimes ranging from financial exploitation to assault, become survivors.

Individuals served ranged in age from 51 to 83 and were from 18 ZIP codes in Davidson County.

Program highlights FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) With focus areas of education, food security, and service to veterans, active and retired military and their families, this program kept older adults active, engaged and giving back. There were 329 individual RSVP volunteers in fiscal year 2016 who provided 23,067 hours of service to the community.

FiftyForward Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) FLIP continues to demonstrate engagement and impact in schools – 125 volunteers served 4,546 hours tutoring 462 children in 31 Davidson and Williamson County schools. Of the children tutored, 83 percent met their academic goals; 77 percent increased their self-esteem.

For the 9/11 Day of Service, which is a partnership with the USO, nearly 100 individuals volunteered at 12 local Kroger locations to collect dry goods for USO Centers located at the Nashville International Airport, and the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) and Fort Campbell.

Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) Approximately 70 volunteers served 20-40 hours per week at eight child learning centers, and eight Metropolitan Nashville Public and Charter Schools.

In 2015-2016, FGP volunteer hours totaled 67,553.

The Thanksgiving and Christmas meals that you hosted last year were very much appreciated. It is one of the few times during the year that we are able to get all of our Veterans and their families together in one location so that they can socialize with each other.

They are not used to being served, so we had many comments and thank yous for this treat ... It is a blessing that your organization is able to provide Christmas gifts to these deserving families ...Thank you for all of the hard work that you all put into making these events so meaningful for our Veterans.”

FiftyForward Firsts We continue to champion “firsts” by those 50 and older to continue learning, growing and expanding life skills and life experiences. Many center and staff members are encouraging others in areas including outdoor activities (canoeing, ziplining, scuba and rock climbing), creative pursuits (quilting, quilling, painting and crafting) and exploring new foods or exploring new and well-established restaurants and local sites. This year we launched an aquatic 5K component to our Viva la Diva Run to accommodate the special needs of a participant who was thrilled with her results and being able to participate.

In a reverse FiftyForward First, FiftyForward Madison Station member Del Dorr, 74, taught the center’s program director Samantha Garlock, 32, how to use the Nashville MTA bus system. It was a win/win for both and a classic example of how intergenerational sharing is beneficial to everyone.

My daughter encouraged me to visit the center and within an hour I was a member. For more than 10 years the center has been a life line for me. There is always something to do, to learn; every day is a new adventure and a chance to meet new friends.” –Camille Bruno

Senior Center for the Arts Senior Center for the Arts (SCA), a wholly owned subsidiary of FiftyForward, was established in 2002 and operates The Larry Keeton Theatre. SCA’s mission is to provide opportunities in the arts for all members of the community. Operating as a 150-seat nonprofit, community dinner theatre, SCA is now in its 15th season and produces six mainstage musical theatre productions per year. Other arts opportunities include the LKLIVE Music Series featuring local and regional music artists; the Prime Time Players, an over age 50 performance group (pictured below with actress Vicki Lawrence); and the Keeton Kids Summer Musical Theatre Camp. SCA is governed by a separate board of directors that ensures fiduciary stewardship and quality productions.

Every day, 10,000 baby boomers reach the typical retirement age of 65. The need for services to assist this booming demographic is unprecedented.

In addition, Tennessee has become a great option for those seeking early retirement because there is no personal income tax and no tax on social security.

The state is also rated very favorably for non-housing related cost of living as well as for housing, although in Middle Tennessee housing costs are rapidly rising.

On a local level, Nashville continues to be called the “It” city with approximately 100 new residents moving to the area daily. Many of the new residents are young professionals who are also bringing their siblings and parents along with them.

This new influx of residents directly impacts the demographics of our wonderful city. As it evolves so do our community needs.

Join our cause, our efforts, our team as we continue to provide opportunities for purpose, socialization and access to community resources for those 50 and older.
