Brentwood Police K-9 Unit Gives new meaning to “Pot” luck

Tuesday, March 17 at 11:30 Guest Speaker: Officer Steve Holder Guest K9: Lexie The K-9 Unit's primary purpose is to assist other officers in locating illegal drugs. Officer Steve Holder and “Lexie” are a subsection of the Field Operations Division and are assigned to rotating shifts. Their services are often requested

by Brentwood officers and other law enforcement agencies. Their dedication and teamwork has resulted in the detection and location of illegal drugs and drug contraband. Officer Holder and "Lexie" train twice a month and are certified by the United States Police Canine Association.

Creative Wellness and Education Massage Licensed therapist Kathy McFarlane is normally available on Tuesday and Thursday.

Hourly rate for members: $45 and non-members $60. Tip not included. 1/2 hour rate: $25 for members and $45 for non-members. Call the Center to make your appointment. Gift cards available.

Playful Penguins Ink pen and watercolor

Wednesday, February 18 at 1:00 Let’s get together for a fun afternoon. We will start with ink design and learn to bring alive these playful penguins with a wash of beautiful colors. Fun and easy. Reservations required but no experience.

Paraffin Hands Tuesday, February 17 and March 17 at 1:15 What are paraffin hands? Both medical professionals and aestheticians use paraffin wax which is a soft wax derived from petroleum to care of hands both inside and out. Your hands are coated in multiple layers of warm wax and covered in plastic to trap heat. Cost: $5 includes gentle scrub for your hands, warm layers of wax to cover your winter worn hands and pamper time with good friends. Reservations required.

Pamper and Play Monday, February 24 at 1:00 Back by popular demand, join Kathy for a fun-filled afternoon with some of your friends. She has an afternoon planned full of laughter and relaxation. And, of course, there will be yummy surprises to stimulate your taste buds sponsored by Somerfield at the Heritage. Sign up early because this a Martin favorite.

We will walk through your questions regarding downsizing, home health help, when do you need assisted living or do you need independent living and what the heck does that even mean! If you have been frustrated with the health care system and need direction or if you need to clean the clutter in your life and in your house you need to start here with us.

Friday, March 27 at 10:30 This is a wonderful opportunity to find out how you can enhance your daily life. Tools that can assist getting in and out of your car, pulling up socks, all types of devices designed to help that you are not aware exists.

The Occupational Therapy students from Nashville State will bring numerous items that can help in a variety of ways. Assistive equipment is any kind of tool or device that can simplify everyday tasks.

Continuing Education AARP Free Tax-aide Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning February 3 through April 14 from 9-Noon. By appointment only.

This service is provided by IRS trained volunteers. You must bring last year’s tax return and current year’s tax forms.

You are not required to be a member of the Center; however, preference will be given to those 50+.

Wednesday, February 11 at 1:00 Guest: Chef Melissa Corbin, Founder and Owner of Corbin in the Dell Chef Corbin’s motto is “fresh ingredients that are locally and sustainably sourced will make a dish sing!”

Her Hunka Hunka Goo Goo Love did just that. Paying homage to Elvis, her local goodies won a Golden Ticket to travel to Las Vegas for the Championship title. Cer tified by the NRA to instruct the following: Advanced Pistol, Basic Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Home Firearm Safety, Personal Protection in the Home, Personal Protection Outside the Home, and Refuse to Be a Victim.

Why take a firearm class?

Shooting is a great activity for anyone interested in trying. However, with firearms comes responsibility and using a firearm for personal defense comes with even greater responsibility. Firearm training is taking personal responsibility for your safety and the safety of those close to you. At the Nashville Armory you will learn about handgun nomenclature, function, operation, handgun safety, cleaning, storage, and the legal liabilities of carrying a handgun. You will also learn about carrying a handgun, ammunition malfunctions, and we will cover loading and unloading, along with the fundamentals of handgun shooting.

Cost: $100 includes 8 hours of instruction, ammunition, firearms, carry permit, range fees and transportation.

Wednesday, March 11 at 1:00 Guest speaker: Dr. Jeff Kegarise Topic: Preventing and Treating Mature Eye Issues This is a session you should join us for you and your family. The daily grind on our eyes has made a transformation with I-Phones, I-Pads, flat screen TV’s and traditional computer monitors. Some people believe that staring at a screen can change your vision. FiftyForward College Grove The Underground Railroad

Wednesday, February 18 at 10:45 Program: The Underground Railroad Between 1840 and 1860, before the American Civil War, enslaved Africans followed the North Star on the Underground Railroad to find freedom. It was not an actual railroad but a secret network of routes and safe houses that helped people escape slavery and reach free states or Canada. Let’s travel to the College Grove Center to learn more about the Underground Railroad. The program will close with music performed by Marie Ogilvie and her friend, Minister Pamela.

Nashville Symphony Beethoven's Seventh

Thursday, March 12 at 9:15 Johannes Debus, conductor Caroline Goulding, violin Wagner Siegfried Idyll Beethoven - Symphony No. 7 Mozart - Violin Concerto No. 5 "Turkish" At its première, Beethoven was noted as remarking that it was one of his best works. The second movement, Allegretto, was the most popular movement and had to be encored. The instant popularity of the Allegretto resulted in its frequent performance separate from the complete symphony. Reservations required. Limited seating available.

For over 3 decades this location is where the music business has come to wine, dine and unwind, share stories and conduct business. Right here is where Brooks & Dunn were introduced, where Earl Bud Lee sold the rights to “Friends in Low Places” for a bar tab, and where song writing legend Harlan Howard held court every afternoon. This is where they pay homage to the Working Class Poets of Nashville. They also happen to have delicious food and a wide range of beverages to offer. Studio A Tour with Aubrey Preston Behind the scenes

Date of tour to be determined Leiper’s Fork philanthropist, preservationist, music historian and recognized as a Nashvillians of the Year in 2014, Aubrey Preston will be our guide for Studio A. Hear first hand about the inspirational story of how Studio A was preserved for future generations and how Aubrey was key to the success. His incredible passion for preservation and music history was just too much for those who wanted to tear down the studio.

Watercolor Exploration with Barbara Bays Six-week series begins Tuesday, February 10 through March 17 at 11:00 It is a “no more fear approach” to watercolor. These sessions are for those who want to continue to explore the art of watercolor. Beginners welcome. Any questions please call Barbara Bays at 414-0458.

Blind Wine Tasting At Martin Thursday, March 26 at 4:30 To ensure impartial judgment of a wine, it will be served blind – that is, without the tasters having seen the label, box or bottle shape. Blind tasting will involve serving the wine from a dark wine glass to mask the color of the wine. As a taster, your judgment can be prejudiced by knowing details of a wine, such as geographic origin, price, reputation, color, or other considerations. Dinner will be provided by Ambrosia Catering. Menu at the front desk. Reservation required.

Hollywood Canteen (1944) Friday, March 27 at 1:00 Built around a story involving a corporal who wins a date with winsome Joan Leslie, Hollywood Canteen is a salute to the WWII club for GIs. Martin Center members with I.D. receive $2.00 off the weekly meeting fee, after week one no additional discounts are available. These discounts are only available at The Martin Center location.

FiftyFoward Martin Center Refund Policy Please read carefully Membership and interest in our programs and activities continue to increase. Many programs and trips require a minimum number to make it cost effective or to honor the time commitment for an instructor, a licensed driver or facilitator. When you sign up, you are making a commitment to the activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar. Refunds or credits are not given for any activity, trip or event where there is a ticket, a reservation, or number of attendees that has to be committed in advance. All activities that require a reservation for a meal or materials provided will forfeit payment unless there is a waiting list and we can fill that vacancy with another member. Credits will be given only if the program is cancelled by the Center. Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.

FOOD DRIVE FOR The Well Partnership with Calvary Chapel and FiftyFoward Martin Center

The Well is a food pantry serving families in Spring Hill, Thompson’s Station and College Grove areas.

During the month of March we will partner with Calvary Chapel to participate with them for this food drive. Each week we will collect different food themes.

There will be a collection box in the administration area of the Martin Center. March 1st will be breakfast foods, March 8th will be lunch foods, March 11th will be dinner foods, March 22nd will be desserts and March 29th will be drinks. All food will be picked up at the Martin Center and taken to The Well.
