Life Line Screening Wednesday, April 15 A stroke occurs in the US every 40 seconds, yet 80% of strokes can be prevented. Early detection is key to prevention. Life Line will be at the Martin Center to offer ultrasound cariotid artery screening to look for fatty plaque buildup. Pre-registration is required. Monday, April 27at 1:00 Winter’s cold has released its grip finally so now its time for fun at Pamper and Play. Paraffin Hands Tuesday, May 19 1:15 What are paraffin hands? Both medical professionals and aestheticians use paraffin wax which is a soft wax derived from petroleum to care of hands both inside and out. Your hands are coated in multiple layers of warm wax and covered in plastic to trap heat. Cost: $5 includes gentle scrub for your hands, warm layers of wax to cover your winter worn hands and pamper time with good friends. Reservations required.

AARP Free Tax-aide Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning February 3 through April 14 from 9-Noon. By appointment only.

This service is provided by IRS trained volunteers. You must bring last year’s tax return and current year’s tax forms.

Friday, April 24 at 9:30 How does it work? At a CarFit event, a team of trained technicians and/or health professionals will work with each participant to ensure they "fit" their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety. A CarFit check takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. Why is CarFit important? As we age we are often the safest drivers in that they are more likely to wear their seatbelts, and less likely to speed or drink and drive. However, those drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur due to the physical changes in our bodies. Reservations are required. Service is free.

Continuing Education Dolls for Children of Burundi, Africa Very simple, easy to assemble

Tuesday, April 21 at 1:00 No experience necessary, just your time. Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world. In the days of iPads and iPhones their children do not know what toys are. We have a group that needs our help. We ask that you come to the center or stay after potluck to help make a very simple doll to be mailed to the children for toys. There is an example of the doll at the front desk. Please lend your talents to make a basic toy for these children. There is a sign up at the front desk if you can volunteer your time for this project.

Thursday, April 23 at 1:00 Guest: Chef Ron Geagan Back by popular demand, Chef Ron will prepare the original Watergate Salad. This is another one of those classic recipes that dates back to the 70s and that just about every southern cook has in their party file, though like everything else, with some variations. Ron Geagan is the Executive Chef at Morning Pointe of Brentwood, Assisted Living Community. He’s a self-trained home cook that transitioned into a professional kitchen 3 years ago. Chef Ron delights in preparing foods – old favorites as well as new tastes and loves to share his creations with others.

Franklin Theatre Wednesday, April 15 at 4:30 Join us for a special screening of LINCOLN, commemorating the 150th Anniversary of his death. There will be a Q & A session with Eric A. Jacobson, Chief Executive Officer of the Battle of Franklin Trust. A portion of ticket proceeds will benefit battlefield preservation. Sponsored by Yeoman's Bookshop. Yeoman's will have a few special historical pieces on display in the front lobby before the show.

Trips and Tours Edley’s BBQ and Goo Goo’s Tuesday, April 28 at 10:15 Let’s taste the best barbecue in Nashville, and make sure you don’t forget to fill up on their homemade baked beans, mac and cheese, and cornbread. Bar-B-Que is best when paired with an ice-cold brew, and Edley's has a fantastic selection of craft beer on draft, typically including local breweries like Yazoo, Calfkiller, and Jackelope. A must try is the Bushwacker, a favorite Nashville treat: A creamy, chocolate milkshake-like adult beverage. Once lunch is finished, we will travel to the Goo Goo store. They are constantly making the Premium Goo Goos and they have a good time in introducing them to their guests.

Lunch and News Channel 5 Tour Wednesday, May 6 at 11:15 We will travel to Nashville to Swett’s for lunch. Their food is home cooked, southern, soul, stick to da bones kind of food.

Enjoy their chicken, green beans, corn bread, mashed potatoes, grits, beans, peas, greens and of course sweet tea.

After lunch, we will go to News Channel Five off of James Robertson parkway and have a guided tour of the station.

Thursday, May 7. Leave FiftyForward Martin at 7:15.

You receive transportation, lunch and a $5 voucher for slot play. You will leave Harrah's at 4:00 to return first to Madison, then Donelson, and Martin Center. There can be no refunds after Monday, May 4.

Dinner Group Leiper’s Fork Wednesday, May 13 at 3:30 Leiper’s Fork is an outside-the-box rural village in Williamson County. While it doesn’t have a single stop light, it is filled with art, boutiques, live music, good country fare and now a restaurant that is outside that box, as well. The new Fly South is commandeered by chef Kristen Gregory, who took top honors on Food Network’s “Cutthroat Kitchen” competition. Fly South has a quirky and some would say tacky interior, the eatery has made itself right at home in this eclectic village. It’s perfectly strange and strangely perfect and that’s how they like it. Dinner will be at 5:00 so hopefully you will have time to stroll the square before we have dinner. Reservations required.

Thursday, May 14 at 3:00 We are very fortunate to have a beautiful patio and back yard so let’s have a party on our patio. Our favorite bluegrass boys will be here to entertain. Burgers provided by G Catering. Let’s enjoy an afternoon of fellowship and fun with friends. Please bring your favorite beverage and enjoy burgers with all the fixings.

John Cannon Workshop Acrylic: The Limitless Medium

Monday, May 11 and 18 from 1:00 to 4:00 This workshop will explore the versatility of acrylics as an art medium. We will explore various techniques for applying the paint, as well as the new slow drying acrylics and different support surfaces for the paint. This workshop will also address the variety and uses of additional acrylic mediums for special effects. Beginner friendly. Course will include supplies such as surfaces and mediums.

Students are encouraged to bring their own brushes, knives, etc. Cost: $65 for members with some supplies included.

If you see these folks please tell them how much they are appreciated. It is a major undertaking that they do for us.

Weight Watchers Weight Watchers Meetings at Martin Tuesday mornings at 8:30 Martin Center members with I.D. pay $30 joining fee week one (unless there is a joining special). Martin Center members with I.D. receive $2.00 off the weekly meeting fee, after week one no additional discounts are available.

Many programs and trips require a minimum number to make it cost effective or to honor the time commitment for an instructor, a licensed driver or facilitator. When you sign up, you are making a commitment to the activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar. Refunds or credits are not given for any activity, trip or event where there is a ticket, a reservation, or number of attendees that has to be committed in advance. All activities that require a reservation for a meal or materials provided will forfeit payment unless there is a waiting list and we can fill that vacancy with another member. Credits will be given only if the program is cancelled by the Center. Exceptions may be considered by the Center Director in extreme situations.
