“TDOT” Needs You Introducing Yellow Dot Program Tuesday, November 18 at 11:30 Guest Speaker: Larry McGoogin, Office of Community Transportation Transportation and our winding roads affect most of us. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is creating a new long-term vision for transportation in Tennessee and public input is needed. This 25-Year Long-Range Transportation Plan provides the foundation for prioritizing transportation investments across the State. The updated plan will aid in accomplishing TDOT's mission to serve the public by providing the best multimodal transportation system in the Nation. We will also discuss the Tennessee YELLOW DOT Program. It is designed to supply first responders with an individual’s medical information in the event of an emergency. Join us to find out about this program that can mean the difference between life and death in the “Golden Hour” immediately following a crash.

Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Noon Guest Speaker: Richard Westgate, Director of Emergency Department and Cardiac Catheterization Lab Easily accessible to residents throughout Franklin, Spring Hill and all of Williamson County, Williamson Medical Center's Emergency Department provides timely, professional emergency room care to nearly 40,000 visitors a year. An accredited Chest Pain Center, two cardiac catheterization labs and Emergency Medical Services with ambulances that transmit EKG results to the Medical Center help patients get the best possible, real emergency care. The Outbreak Presented by The Raining Season

Wednesday, October 15 at 12:30 Guest Speaker: Timothy McLaughlin, President and Martin Member Topic: Ebola ~ What you need to know The current outbreak in west Africa, is the largest and most complex Ebola outbreak since the Ebola virus was first discovered in 1976. There have been more cases and deaths in this outbreak than all others combined. It has also spread between countries starting in Guinea then spreading across land borders to Sierra Leone and Liberia, by air (1 traveller only) to Nigeria, and by land (1 traveller) to Senegal. Tom will join us to share his personal story with us. Find out how his organization is providing a hopeful future and seeking justice for vulnerable children to bring hope to a new generation. Monday, November 17 at 10:30 Instructor: Mark Woods, DARE/Crime Prevention Officer With the holidays rapidly approaching, our thoughts turn to buying, giving and receiving gifts, visiting friends and family, and sharing delightful culinary experiences. However, there are others whose thoughts are occupied with unattended electronic/ appliance-filled houses or apartments, distracted shoppers with extra cash in a purse or wallet, or the next “con job” in the name of Christmas charity. Statistics show that crime usually increases during and after the holiday season and the reason is very simple. Wednesday, November 19 at 8:15 Guest Speaker: Thomas Lee Clark, Author Topic: Courage for Living featuring Harriet Virginia Maxwell Overton After Tom retired from the Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay), he became a docent at Travellers Rest. He will join us to discuss his book. The war between the states came to the doorstep of Travellers Rest in Nashville in December 1864. The lady of the house, Harriet Overton, the mother of five children, was thrust into total management of the 2300 acre plantation and 50 slaves, while her husband was away at war. She struggled to defend her family against the Federal army troops on her property. She lived all of her life with southern pride.

Blind, Wine and Dine The Art of Blind Tasting

Thursday, November 13 at 5:00 But first things first: Why taste blind? Tasting a wine blind is one of the best ways to formulate an unbiased opinion about the wine. Believe it or not there is an art to tasting a wine blind and then deciphering what it is. Like any query there is a set way to solving the problem. Think of a glass of wine as a jigsaw puzzle with the label of the wine the finished product. The sight, smell and taste of the wine are pieces of the puzzle. Each will give you clues as to the answer of your question: What is this wine? Catering provided by Ambrosia Catering. Reservation accepted only with payment.

Health and Wellness EXPO at Martin Center free

Thursday October 30 from 1pm to 4pm Granite Retirement & Regen Tax along with their Wagon Wheel Partners is hosting a Health and Wellness EXPO. The panel will speak on a variety of topics as well as exhibit tables for everyone to visit. Some of the topics we will cover are health, nutrition & diet, retirement planning, geriatric care, home health care, estate and asset services, tax planning, and even downsizing from your first time home to your dream retirement community.

Spring Hill Goodwill and Tito’s Monday, October 20 at 10:30 You will absolutely love this Goodwill in Springhill. It's huge with great quality clothing, furniture, jewelry, books, toys, etc.

They have mostly everything at a reasonable price. This place is a treasure trove of goodies. After shopping, we will have lunch at Tito’s. Tito’s is a family owned business and they will do their best to make you feel at home, and will strive to serve you the very best authentic Mexican food you’ve ever eaten. Oktoberfest at O’Rourke’s locally owned and operated

Fall Foliage Cruise Blue Herron Cruise, Ashland City

Wednesday, October 29 at 10:00 Travel to Ashland City and ride the Blue Heron, a true excursion boat that lets you get close to the water and wildlife. Card Crusaders Watch “Tennessee Crossroads” on NPT. The original segment debuted September 26 and now you can watch it on YouTube or their website at www.tennesseecrossroads.org. It is a wonderful gift and a grassroots effort has been provided by the gals at the FiftyForward Martin Center! Watercolor Exploration with Barbara Bays Six-week series.

Beading Buds Date to be determined Sherry Armstrong invites you to volunteer your time to help make beaded bookmarks for the Center to sell.

All you need to do is donate an hour of your time to help the Martin Center raise funds that will directly benefit our Center and our members. This beaded bookmark craft is easy and fun to make and you will be helping raise money for the Center. They will fit any theme just by changing the colors and shapes of the beads. Supplies included.

Fire Pit and Horseshoes Thursday, November 13 at Noon Join us for a fun filled afternoon in our back yard.

We will fire up the fire pit and grill hot dogs and s'mores while we burn up the horse shoe pit with friendly competition.

No problem if you don’t want to use the steps down our back yard we can take the van around to the recreation center and drop you off with in a few steps of the fire pit!! Reservations required. Cost: $5.

Meet Me On The Patio Friday, October 13 at 3:00 It is time to meet on the patio for a lovely afternoon. Bring an appetizer and beverage to share with everyone and let’s take advantage of our beautiful setting in our own back yard. Reservations required.

Amazing Volunteers So long to the lazy, hazy days of summer! As we move into Fall, it’s fun to look back at what we’ve done these last few months and to think about what’s ahead.

Our last two potlucks have been very entertaining. Per usual, the food was delicious and well presented by Glee Moody and her Kitchen Keepers. Tennessee sports writer’s Hall of Famer, Joe Biddle, was here in August and gave a fantastic overview of the upcoming football season. The room was decked out in college sports team gear by the Fluffette’s so it was hard not to get into the spirit. Whether or not you agreed with (or liked) his predictions for the season, it was great to hear what someone close to the action had to say. Thanks to Joe for taking time out of his busy, demanding schedule to join us for lunch!

At our September potluck, we enjoyed the entertainment provided by falconer Jennifer Forcher and her furry friends, Sadie, a red tail hawk, and Cooper, an Eastern Screech Owl. It was entertaining to witness the exchange between these animals and us humans. Even though it might have been wasted on the animals, the rest of us appreciated how festive and Fall-like the Fluffett’s made the room look for the occasion. This fun afternoon could not have been possible without the wonderful sponsorship of Claiborne Hughes Health Care Center. Thank you!

We have a group of wonderful men who help set up for these potluck as well as many other events that take place at the center. They’ve been known to stack chairs; they’ve been known to unstack chairs.

They’ve put tables away; they’ve set tables up. Like most of our volunteers, these men don’t get enough credit but we want to thank these Martin Men (Bill Salmon, Burke Taulien, Wayne Byrne, Richard Landry) for all of their help!

Finally, as the days get cooler, our wonderful garden volunteers (Tom Cullen, Wray Estes, David and Priscilla Lee, Wayne Byrne, Ryan Dankowski) find themselves approaching the planting and mulching season. If you would like to donate a flowering bush, plant or tree in somebody’s honor (or just because), these volunteers would be happy to help shop for the right choice and to plant it in our gardens.

Martin Center Certified Therapy Dog By definition: Ther apy dogs pr ovide affection and comfor t to individuals in hospitals, nur sing homes, and other facilities. Sassie, an Australian Cattle Dog, is now registered with the United States Dog Registry as a certified Therapy Dog. When visiting the Martin Center she will be sporting a therapy dog vest so visitors will be able to identify her.

FiftyFoward Martin Center Refund Policy Please read carefully Membership and interest in our programs and activities continue to increase. Many programs and trips require a minimum number to make it cost effective or to honor the time commitment for an instructor, a licensed driver or facilitator. When you sign up, you are making a commitment to the activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar. Refunds or credits are not given for any activity, trip or event where there is a ticket, a reservation, or number of attendees that has to be committed in advance. All activities that require a reservation for a meal or materials provided will forfeit payment unless there is a waiting list and we can fill that vacancy with another member. Credits will be given only if the program is cancelled by the Center. Exceptions may be considered by the Center director in extreme situations.

Friday, October 10 at 1:00 Young Frankenstein: Comedy A young neurosurgeon (Gene Wilder) inherits the castle of his grandfather, the famous Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. He discovers the book where the mad doctor described his reanimation experiment and repeats the experiments.
