Football officials... the men on the field we all love to hate and complain about. But without these keepers of the rules, a football game could not progress with any sort of structure or sanity. This is a unique opportunity to find out what the men in stripes are required to do to perform their jobs on and off the field. Guest Speaker: SEC Refer ee Tom Ritter and SEC Head Line J udge, Tim Bear d will join us to discuss what it is like to be an SEC football official and work some of the biggest rivalry games in the 2014 Collegiate Football league. Paraffin Hands Tuesday, January 20 at 1:00 What are paraffin hands? Both medical professionals and aestheticians use paraffin wax which is a soft wax derived from petroleum to care of hands both inside and out. Your hands are coated in multiple layers of warm wax and covered in plastic to trap heat and intensify its healing and moisturizing properties. Join us for a wonderful treat after potluck. Continuing Education Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest with
Special Guest Judges Monday, December 1 at 11:30 Ugly Sweater (noun) an over ly-gaudy garment that is often adorned with large appliqué or knitted cartoon-like figures and sometimes made of bad color combinations. Beading, bells, buttons, and sequins are often used to embellish the garment. There's no entrance fee, except perhaps embarrassment, and you don't even have to wear a holiday sweater. It can be anything so long as it's ugly in your eyes. Keep in mind, someone’s tacky sweater could be someone else's treasure. Join us for a guaranteed fun-filled luncheon with guest judges to crown our winner. The Nashville State Occupational Therapy students will join us again this year to spice up the competition! Tuesday, December 9 at 1:00 Instructor: Sherri Armstrong Join in the fun or come watch a demonstration of rolled paper cone wreaths. Many of us saw the beautiful wreath made by Joyce Patton at potluck. To create paper cones, you want to cut your paper into squares. You can use different types of paper, including recycled dictionary paper, recycled sheet music, and patterned paper. See example at front desk. Continuing Education Cyber Crime Monday, December 15 at Noon Guest speaker: Scott Augenbaum, Supervisory Special Agent (SSA), Computer Intrusion/Counterintelligence Squad, Memphis Division, FBI SSA Augenbaum started his career with the FBI in the New York Field Office in 1988 as a support employee in the Financial Management Section and became a Special Agent in 1994. He was first assigned to the Syracuse, New York Office where he worked Domestic Terrorism, White Collar Crime, Hate Crimes and all Computer Crime Investigations. In October 2003, he was promoted to Supervisor at FBI Headquarters in the Cyber Division, Cyber Task Force Unit and was responsible for managing the resources of the FBI's Cyber Task Force Program. In addition, he was responsible for the management oversight of the Internet Fraud and Intellectual Property Rights Program. Reservations required.

Monday, December 18 at 2:00 Guest Chef: Betsey Crossley Cherries Jubilee is a dessert dish made with cherries and liqueur, which is subsequently flambéed, and commonly served as a sauce over vanilla ice cream. The recipe is generally credited to Auguste Escoffier, who prepared the dish for one of Queen Victoria's Jubilee celebrations, widely thought to be the Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Cost: $2.
Wine and Dine at Martin Thursday, January 29 at 4:30 Learning how to taste wines is a straightforward adventure that will deepen your appreciation for both wines and winemakers. Look, smell, taste - starting with your basic senses and expanding from there you will learn how to taste wines like the pros in no time! Lunch and Franklin Theatre Miracle on 34th Street
Tuesday, December 10 at 10:45 We will travel to Franklin and have lunch at Puckett’s Boathouse. After lunch we will go to the historic Franklin Theatre to enjoy Miracle on 34th Street on the big screen. In this Christmas classic, an old man going by the name of Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) fills in for an intoxicated Santa in Macy's annual Thanksgiving Day parade. Kringle proves to be such a hit that he is soon appearing regularly at the chain's main store in midtown Manhattan. When Kringle surprises customers and employees alike by claiming that he really is Santa Claus, it leads to a court case to determine his mental health and, more importantly, his authenticity. Many programs and trips require a minimum number to make it cost effective or to honor the time commitment for an instructor, a licensed driver or facilitator. When you sign up, you are making a commitment to the activity and are responsible for putting it on your calendar. Refunds or credits are not given for any activity, trip or event where there is a ticket, a reservation, or number of attendees that has to be committed in advance. All activities that require a reservation for a meal or materials provided will forfeit payment unless there is a waiting list and we can fill that vacancy with another member. Credits will be given only if the program is cancelled by the Center. Exceptions may be considered by the Center director in extreme situations.
Holiday Greetings to all of the Wonderful Martin Volunteers Did you know that Martin Center could not exist without the hundreds of hours that our member volunteers donate to the success of our center? Volunteers do everything from staffing the reception desk to maintaining the property. The Fluffettes are devoted to making each monthly potluck look cheerful and inviting plus they are the magic elves that decorate the center for the holidays. The Kitchen Keepers diligently staff our kitchen each month for our potluck luncheons. The Art Committee work with the staff to prepare for the annual Martin Masters three day show and sale. The Card Crusaders meet twice a week all day creating their amazing Iris Paper folders cards. The Garden Committee works year round keeping the landscaping. Our Martin Men are always willing to help with set up and in a variety of other jobs that crop up. Our dear friends with Calvary Chapel also help us with mulching the property, set up for the art show, and other unexpected tasks that arise. Thank you so much and happy holidays!
