After over 30 years of covering sports in Middle Tennessee, veteran writer Joe Biddle is headed for immortality. Biddle was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Hall of Fame at Cumberland University in July. The Johnson City native's work has appeared in The Banner, The Tennessean and many more publications.

Biddle has been a fixture in Tennessee athletics covering the Titans, Commodores, Volunteers and more.

Sounds easy, right? It would be if it weren’t for one huge barrier that almost all Americans desiring to Age in Place have to overcome: their own home. While we work hard to prepare ourselves for retirement in our senior years we may forget, or not know how, to prepare our homes to age with us. Our homes should be a safe haven where we feel comfortable and independent.

Unfortunately, the reality is that as we grow older our homes look more like an obstacle course than a place of rest. Denise will walk us through solutions to some of the challenges we face.

Wednesday, September 3 at 10:00 Guest Speaker: Gretchen Geagan Join us as we view the NPT Aging Matters panel discussion that aired on NPT in July. Gretchen Geagan was part of the panel and will join us for a question and answer session to follow the video. Gretchen is the owner of Life-Links and one of a few Certified Members of the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers in Middle Tennessee. Gretchen's passion for and calling to work with the elderly began in high school and she has devoted the past 20 years to making the final phase of life for those she serves as fulfilling as possible. The right answer could help you save a life. Join us for an informative and hand-on instruction from Lt. Mike McCutcheon. Mike will give us an overview on CPR and the latest techniques. He will also demonstrate our AED that was generously donated to us by Dr. George and Betsy Crossley.

On My Own Terms with Carol Austin

Wednesday, August 27 at Noon Guest Speaker: Car ol Austin Unfortunately, having a living will in a drawer or safety deposit box is not enough. As many as 50% will not be accessible in the event of an emergency. Let’s discuss what you need in place to give instruction to your loved ones when you are not able to tell them yourself. Don’t leave them guessing. Join us for a “lively” discussion on steps you can take to give your loved ones peace of mind. Reservations required. Bring a brown bag for lunch.

Brentwood Middle School Needs You! Please share with your service men and women As part of its Veterans Day Assembly, Brentwood Middle art classes are creating portraits of veterans that served our country in any branch of the armed services. They need your help. If you were in the Service, please consider lending a photograph of yourself or a loved one (it can be you in uniform or not--even a current photograph will do). After instruction, 8th graders will draw a portrait of you from your photograph. You will get your photograph back, as well as get the portrait, at the end of their first semester. Portraits will be on display during the Veterans Day Assembly, to which you'll be invited. If you're interested, please bring your photograph to Joyce Keistler by September 1. Put your photograph in an envelope with your full name, branch of Service, your rank, and the years you served. For example, Corp. John Doe, U.S. Army, 1956-59.

Brentwood Middle will scan your photographs and return them to the Martin Center no later than October 1.

The mother of five children was thrust into total management of the 2300 acre plantation when her husband, John, was away at war. All activities that require a reservation for a meal or materials provided will forfeit payment unless there is a waiting list and we can fill that vacancy with another member. Leave the center at 10:15 The inimitable “Fats” Waller rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club, honky tonk dives along Lenox Avenue, rent parties, stride piano players and the jumpin’ new beat, Swing. Although not quite a biography, Ain’t Misbehavin’ evokes the delightful humor and infectious energy of this American original as a versatile cast struts, strums and sings the songs he made famous in a career that ranged from uptown clubs to downtown Tin Pan Alley to Hollywood and concert stage in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Watercolor Exploration with Barbara Bays Six-week series begins Tuesday, August 19 through September 23 at 11:00 It is a “no more fear approach” to watercolor. Beading Buds Thursday, September 11 at 1:00 Sherry Armstrong wants to ask you to volunteer your time to help make beaded bookmarks for the Center to sell.

All you need to do is donate an hour of your time to help the Martin Center raise funds that will directly benefit our Center and our members. This beaded bookmark craft is easy and fun to make and you will be helping raise money for the Center. They will fit any theme just by changing the colors and shapes of the beads. Supplies included.

Amazing Volunteers It’s been a busy last few months at The Martin Center! There has been activity after activity planned and, hopefully, each one of you has been able to participate in something. We’ve held our annual Music & Memories fundraiser, which was absolutely terrific! Our potlucks have been well attended. The gardens have been blooming. The card games have been competitive; and the Card Crusaders are filling orders left and right! There are many ways to get involved at The Martin Center, whether through volunteering or choosing an activity to get involved in. Below are some of our volunteers that we would like to acknowledge for their service these past few months. Thank you to all of them for their contributions! 

Reliant Bank volunteers cleaned and washed windows and blinds and power washed the deck all in preparation for Music & Memories.



The Fluffet’s made everything beautiful for Music & Memories and our potlucks, taking care of everything from the table cloths to flowers.



Martin Center Certified Therapy Dog By definition: Ther apy dogs pr ovide affection and comfor t to individuals in hospitals, nur sing homes, and other facilities. Sassie, an Australia Cattle Dog, is now registered with the United State Dog Registry as a certified Therapy Dog. When visiting the Martin Center she will be sporting a therapy dog vest so visitors will be able to identify her.

Amish Country and Shafer Farms Ethridge, TN Wednesday, September 17 at 8:30 Explore the Amish Community in a horse-drawn covered wagon. Come and visit the South's largest "Old Order Amish Settlement". We'll take you into the heart of Amish country in a horse-drawn covered wagon. You will have a fun-filled ride as you take a first-hand look at life on the Amish Farms.

See farming done the old fashion way, with horse-drawn farm equipment, wagons, and buggies. Their experienced drivers will fill you in on all the interesting details of the Amish lifestyle. After the tour, we will travel to Shafer Farms for some of the best Texas BBQ , brisket, smoked chicken, homemade sides and desserts you have ever tasted. If you leave Shaffer's hungry, its your own fault !

Cost: $20 includes mini-bus, wagon tour, door to door service and CDL licensed driver.
