Welcome to our Spring programme of events at Arts and Theatres Trust Fife.

We’re committed to bringing the very best in arts and entertainment to Fife, and we are sure you’ll agree that this season’s programme really does have something for everyone.

Our packed Spring programme includes the return of the Fife Jazz Festival and the Puppet Animation Festival, plus two pieces of theatre by acclaimed Fife playwright Gregory Burke – a fantastic adaptation of his breakthrough play Gagarin Way, and the return of the acclaimed production of Black Watch by the National Theatre of Scotland. Plus we have music, dance, comedy and much more to enjoy. So dive in – you’re sure to find a show you’ll love.

Adam Smith Theatre is a historical building in the centre of Kirkcaldy presenting a high quality programme of drama, dance, music, comedy and children’s theatre including the annual Christmas pantomime.

One of the largest community events in Fife providing the opportunity to perform music in public. Performers range from primary school children to adults in both competitive and non-competitive vocal and instrumental classes.

Audiences are welcome at all performances, which take place in various venues across Fife, including Adam Smith Theatre and Carnegie Hall.

The comfortable auditorium turns into a Dolby Stereo big screen cinema when we are not presenting live theatre.

Our Theatre Café is open Monday to Saturday 10am – 2.30pm serving hot food, snacks and home baking. The bar is open on performance nights and for pre theatre meals on some performances.

Stephen Venables In the Steps of Shackleton

Stephen Venables is an internationally-acclaimed mountaineer and writer. In 1988 he became the first Briton and just one of a handful of people in the world to climb Everest without supplementary oxygen.

He has twice repeated Sir Ernest Shackleton’s treacherous Antarctic expedition across South Georgia. With his natural storytelling gifts and wonderful photographs, Stephen brings this epic of endurance alive, capturing the thrill of climbing, skiing and sailing in a place of such haunting beauty.

Though written in 1889, The Gondoliers still sparkles today with vintage music, bubbling humour and effervescent characters.

Act One is set in Venice (where else!) with Act Two on the fictional island of Barataria – and the plot is topsy-turvy at its very best.

But will I enjoy it? Well, as Don Alhambra, The Grand Inquisitor, would say – ‘of that there is no manner of doubt, no probable, possible shadow of doubt, no possible doubt whatever’.

It’s twenty years since critically acclaimed album The Same Sky was launched. This glorious and utterly unique album, with beautifully crafted songs will be performed in its entirety by her band and in addition, she will be adding the most popular B sides and a ‘best of the rest’ into the mix. The Naked Truth It’s a Women Thing

Real Women, Real Lives Tailor-made for women, The Naked Truth is the hit comedy play from Dave Simpson, the writer of the smash-hit comedy Girls Night Out, starring Maureen Nolan and Claire King (Emmerdale), Michelle Heaton (Liberty X) and Leanne Jones (Olivier award winning star of Hairspray).

Based on the Gospel of St. John, Superstar dramatizes Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the unrest caused by his preaching and popularity, his betrayal by Judas, the trial before Pontius Pilate and his ultimate crucifixion.

So how come, when she sees him run like that, when he brings down a deer, when they sit at night just watching the stars, how come her heart starts to spin?

A double bill from award-winning dancer/ choreographer Claire Cunningham showcasing her exceptional dance technique and impressive power.

Caged is a story about two people trapped together, and finding more freedom than they ever imagined.

ME (Mobile/Evolution) is a show woven from humorous stories; about doctors and dancing, bikes and ballet; all threaded together and balanced upon, hanging from, spinning on and swinging on crutches. Any possible sentimentality is undercut with a healthy dose of Scottish sarcasm. Audiences for this critically acclaimed production, seen at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2009, have been delighted, as well as provoked into questioning their ideas of aesthetics and dance.

The old TA Hut in Minto Street is now The Art Shakk. The building has been transformed by our own staff into a fabulous little community facility where we run workshops and classes in: Drawing and Painting, Stained Glass, Junior Art Classes and Young Women’s Art Group – The Art Angels. The Art Shakk is also available for community bookings We have also taken over space for movement and dance classes in Lochgelly’s Town Hall at 71 Bank Street.

In their distinguishing white helmets, Royal Marine Bands are celebrated for the quality of their music, visual grandeur and precision drill.

On the concert platform they enjoy a similar reputation ensuring their continuing popularity with their audiences. The Band’s repertoire includes popular classics, Big Band, stimulating contemporary works and entertaining solo features. The Corps of Drums bring movement, colour and the tradition of the ceremonial occasions integral to the Royal Marines. Most members of the Band play at least two instruments and are required to perform in wind band, marching band, big band, orchestral and dance band combinations. They also provide jazz, string and woodwind ensembles, making the Royal Marines musician one of the most versatile in military music.

More Songs For Swinging Lovers

Courtney Pine Band

Fife Jazz Orchestra with special guest Matthew Ford take inspiration from the classic Sinatra recordings and present a concert of classic jazz tunes about love and romance. Matthew Ford is arguably the leading singer of swinging jazz and big band music in the country, and he so completely knocked us out last year, we had to have him back!

The master saxophonist brings his star-studded band to the Fife Jazz Festival to promote his new album Europa.

With influences from Gregorian chants, the warmth of Mediterranean music and the evocative melodies of the far north, Courtney traces the sounds of today’s European generations. Like all of Courtney’s shows, it’s packed with passion and good vibes. The band includes pianist Zoe Rahman and Cuban violin star, Omar Puente.

She has set her sights on Nanki Poo, a wandering musician whose true identity is concealed. The Mikado is about one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most admired and best loved works; a comic opera packed with well known songs including The Flowers That Bloom in the Spring, Tit Willow, Three Little Maids and many more.

Originally formed by the RAF with a view to emulating the popularity with the troops of the American bands of the day, and to help boost morale, the Squadronaires went on to surpass even the most popular of the American bands. Familiar to many thousands of music fans as the front man in the Scottish rock band Idlewild, Roddy Woomble is also a celebrated solo songwriter & performer. He follows up the release of his acclaimed 2006 solo debut My Secret is My Silence with a brand new album. As well as songs from the new album the set will feature tunes from My Secret is My Silence and Before the Ruin alongside several Idlewild numbers.

Alasdair Roberts is a Scottish singer, guitarist, interpreter of traditional songs and writer of new songs based in Glasgow, Scotland. Since 1996 he has worked with Drag City Records of Chicago, releasing three albums of original material under the name Appendix Out as well as five albums under his own name, featuring both original and traditional material.

John Tiffany’s production makes powerful and inventive use of movement, music and song to create a visceral, complex and urgent piece of theatre that is as relevant in 2011 as ever.

Black Watch has played to tens of thousands of people across three continents and has garnered 22 awards. Most recently, the production won four Laurence Olivier Awards and the National Theatre of Scotland won its first US award with the New York Drama Circle naming Black Watch Best Foreign Play.

This talented artist began his career over three decades ago with appearances on Junior Showtime.

His big break came in 1981 when he was a finalist on London Weekend Television’s Search for a Star.

Television specials in the UK and USA followed.

Joe’s repertoire of voices is endless and includes hundreds of the world’s top singers, however, he is perhaps best known for his impersonation of Shirley Bassey who has said: “Joe can do me better than I can do myself.”

Monday 10 January – Thursday 17 February An exhibition by two new graduates from Duncan of Jordanston College of Art, Charlene Noble and Victoria Haycock.

Charlene works with a relatively new medium called ‘scanography’.

The subject of her work is dried, dead flowers. Charlene says: “each and every one of the flowers in my works was once at full bloom, bright colourful and alive, but as they began to fade and dry, I realised that they are so much more beautiful than they were before. I have strived to show this in the best possible detail”. Victoria’s work is concerned with place and memory, drawing inspiration from the Scottish landscape to evoke a sense of nostalgia and mystery. Her practice is multi-disciplinary, involving sound, photography, film, performance and installation.

Silver Monday 4 April – Thursday 12 May A new exhibition of high quality fine art prints by Fife Dunfermline Printmakers Workshop. Silver is the second travelling exhibition produced by artist members of Fife Dunfermline Printmakers Workshop. It is designed to show case the rich diversity of artist’s prints which are created in their Dunfermline studio. Steve Ratomski, the chairperson of the workshop said, ‘‘We’re very pleased to be exhibiting in this important new gallery in the centre of Fife. Silver celebrates 25 years of our workshop which is and always has been an artist run cooperative which is unique in Scotland.’’
