Dear Friends of the Israel Defense Forces,
It is truly an honor and a privilege for me to serve as the Chair of the San Diego chapter. Thank you for all of your support.
I would like to personally thank Julian and Jenny Josephson for chairing this amazing event. And to our dear family friends, the Smiedts, you deserve to be honored for your commitment and dedication to FIDF. Kol Hakavod to Mal, her family and our precious Stan z”l, whom we all miss very much.
None of this would be possible without our professional staff, Brian Blacher (Director) and Judy Clayton (Senior Development Associate). Thank you for all you have done and continue to do to ensure that our soldiers receive everything they need.
I don’t think any of us could have imagined the events of the past year. October 7th, 2023 will be embedded in our hearts forever. A day etched into our souls, forever changing our lives, our communities, and our nation. A moment of unimaginable darkness. But history teaches us that even in the darkest times, there is light. Our soldiers have demonstrated incredible
resilience and continue to fight for what we all believe in. We at the FIDF have supported them every step of the way.
One year later, I am beyond proud of what our FIDF San Diego community, has achieved. We raised significant funds for the Emergency Campaign and donated thirteen lifesaving ambulances, much needed medical equipment, and supply kits for soldiers on the frontlines. We have supported our wounded soldiers and bereaved families and continue to support PTSD treatment and our IMPACT scholarship program.
FIDF remains firm in our commitment to fulfill all the requests of the IDF. We must stand with the men and women who will protect the future of Israel and the Jewish people. Our promise to them is as strong as ever. Israel’s soldiers are our family, and this is our responsibility.
Toda Raba and Am Yisrael Chai.
Sincerely,
Tamara Klein
We are proud to honor Mal and Stanley z”l Smiedt at this year’s FIDF Gala Dinner. As individuals and as a family the Smiedts exemplify the qualities of Tzedakah (Charity) and Gemilut Hasadim (Loving Kindness). Born and educated in South Africa, Mal and Stan emigrated to the United States in 1978 with their two sons, Bradley and Evan. The Smiedt family moved to San Diego as a family unit with Mal’s mother Helen Josephson and siblings Julian (Jenny) Josephson and Vivienne Friedman.
Stan z”l and Julian began a business together as Burger King franchisees in San Diego County. Their partnership lasted more than 40 years with a deep friendship and trust in each other. Together they built a successful business with Burger King restaurants in San Diego, New Mexico and Colorado. The Smiedts and Josephsons also own several Brueggers Bagel stores in San Diego.
Family is the center of the Smiedts lives. Brad is married to Jessica and they have a son, Jonah, and daughter, Arielle. Evan is married to Meredith and they have three sons, Harrison, Miles and Jake. Mal and Stan z”l have instilled in their children and grandchildren their own commitment to Judaism, Zionism, Tzedakah, Gemilut Hasadim and Tikun Olam. Mal and Stan z”l are very proud to see their children continuing this commitment to the Jewish community. Upon arrival in San Diego Mal and Stan z”l involved themselves from the outset in the Jewish community. Mal served in various leadership positions on the boards of the UJF, San Diego Jewish Academy, ADL
and FIDF. Stan z”l served on the board of Congregation Beth El. The Smiedt family are members of Congregation Beth El and generously support Chabad and Adat Yeshurun.
The strong connection between Mal and Stan z”l and the State of Israel and her people is evident in their generosity to many causes in the country.
They have supported the Israel Tennis Centers, which offers recreational facilities to underprivileged Jewish and Arab children, who otherwise would have no access to such facilities. Magen David Adom is another important organization the Smiedts support, including MDA vehicles and services that benefit the IDF.
Their support for the FIDF has been unwavering. The Smiedts have been on several FIDF missions to Israel and participated in funding recreational and other facilities across several bases. Mal and Stan z”l also support the IMPACT! Scholarship program and have developed close and ongoing relationships with their students. These scholarships allow soldiers who cannot afford university to enroll upon completion of their military service.
The FIDF is honored to pay tribute to Mal and Stan z”l Smiedt for their dedication, unwavering commitment and generosity to the brave young men and women of the Israel Defense Forces and the entire Jewish community.
