I was honored to meet with the folks featured in our cover story. The Devil Dog Squadron commit their time and energy every day to honoring our military history and traditions. It’s wonderful to be writing this letter, having glanced at my letter from May 2020 and thinking about how far we’ve come since then. Not only are the Spring flowers arriving in gorgeous defiance of the winter storm, our stories—and our City—are once again celebrating rodeos, graduations, moms, and Memorial Day.

Speaking of education, let’s send some love to our GISD seniors, who have weathered disappointments and constant change over the past year. The Benefits of Unplugging

W

e may occasionally fuss at our children when they overdo it on the screen time, but did you know the average adult spends as much as 10 hours a day in front of TV and computer screens, too? Sure, we need to pay our bills, video chat with our family members, choose from among nearly-infinite entertainment options, and shop for whatever we need delivered by tomorrow. While the Internet is a wonderful tool, it is not exactly a healthy extension of our identity.

Modern technology adds great value to our lives and our lifestyles, but it is also prudent to take occasional, or regular breaks from screens to renew our physical, mental, and emotional health.

Some things to consider when we log back in...

Productivity. Being accessible by our employers sometimes means being available, which means less time for ourselves. Losing that balance can lead to fatigue, frustration, and lower motivation. Try setting a schedule, and notify your boss, for an hour or more of silent time on nights and weekends.

Insomnia. Experts have been warning us for years that the flickering blue light of digital screens keep the brain activated, and disrupted sleep prevents the brain from cleaning itself. During deep sleep, the brain discards waste products accumulated from a day’s activity; but too much time looking at a digital screen, absorbing artificial light waves, can disrupt circadian rhythms. It is recommended we turn off screens at least 60 minutes before bedtime.

Vision Troubles. Staring at screens for too long each day can trigger vision issues. Studies show our blink rates

slow, which results in dry eyes. For older adults, there are concerns that blue light penetrates to the retina. Too much exposure to blue light can damage light-sensitive cells on the retina, which causes changes that resemble macular degeneration.* The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the 20-20-20 rule; every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

THE GOOD NEWS Taking a day or a weekend, or longer, to give yourself a break from screens, or even just social media, can improve your outlook.

Reduces Stress and Anxiety. Focus on Appreciation & Gratitude. Social media helps us stay up-to-date on what people are doing but can also lead to FOMO (fear of missing out), unnecessary comparisons, jealousy, and envy. Powering down from time to time allows us to reset, and be grateful for what we have. Experts advise we start by assigning a short part of the day to catch up and log out, or limit ourselves to just one platform per day.

Connect with the Natural World. Experts say we experience a natural urge to go outside when we disconnect from technology. Being outside gives us much-needed vitamin D and full-spectrum light waves that contribute to emotional well-being and help regulate sleep cycles.

Be Productive. When you realize the natural impulse is to look at your screen in a few moments of down time, decide ahead of time that, next time you feel the urge, you will grab a crossword, cook, or walk the dog. Physical and productive activities also help increase our attention spans. *scienceoflight.org

THE DOOLITTLE RAID: On April 18, 1942 the U.S. launched 16 B-25B bombers, without fighter escort, deep in the Western Pacific Ocean. The plan called for them to bomb military targets in Japan and continue westward to land in China.

It was an attack on the Japanese capital Tokyo and other places on the island of Honshu, and was the first air operation to strike the Japanese archipelago. It demonstrated the Japanese mainland was vulnerable to American air attack, served as retaliation for the attack on Pearl Harbor, and provided an important boost to American morale. The raid was planned, led by, and named after Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle.

obly hangared at Pilot’s Choice Aviation at the Georgetown Municipal Airport is a piece of history just waiting to tell you a story of the men and machines that defeated Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, and Fascist Italy.

The B-25 “Devil Dog” medium range bomber is part of the nation’s Commemorative Air Force (CAF), which includes 88 units and 155 other planes and, combined, is the largest flying museum in the United States. The Devil Dog Squadron is supported entirely by volunteers who give of their time and resources

every day. They also spend many weekends away from home to keep history alive, educate and inspire younger generations, and honor the Airmen and Marines who flew B-25s over every combat theater in the world from 1941 through the end of World War II.

The original aircraft were the first group outfitted with radar, enabling them to locate and attack targets at night. The restored #3 plane is adorned with art-

Devil Dog Squadron Keeping History Alive

work representing 22 missions, during which the crew downed three merchant ships and one Imperial ship.

Pilots were known to “skip-bomb”—approach a ship at low altitude, only 20 feet above the decks, drop their payload, and pull up quickly while being fired upon.

The Devil Dog is a Marine version purchased in 1978 by the CAF. They sold it in 1980 and it was donated back to them in 1982, after which it was restored by Ozzie Parrish, a member of VMB-612 who wanted to honor his friends. Georgetown volunteers have continued to maintain the appearance and airworthiness of the aircraft for air shows, static displays, field trips, and visits from anyone with an interest.

KEEP HISTORY ALIVE The Devil Dog Squadron is booked nearly every weekend at air shows and flyovers, and logged many hours in 2020 appearing over parades, hospitals, and veteran events. They are always eager to encourage and entertain, including an Easter egg drop for Georgetown families.

Scott Maul, Development Officer for the Squadron, says, “The direct and indirect costs of the plane are about $2,000 per hour of flight time. But we like to say the plane actually runs on cotton. We have a wonderful selection of t-shirts, caps, challenge coins, and other branded items that help us keep up with operating costs. When folks bring their family to the hanger to see the plane, the visit and the tour are free, but we invite everyone to make a purchase or a donation to help us continue our work around Texas and the nation.”

The volunteers and crew enjoy touring the country and are especially delighted when they meet individuals who flew, maintained, or helped build the planes, many of whom have left their signature inside the fuselage.

The crew also enjoy providing creative experiences, including guest flights, scattering ashes, and even a wedding.

Flight enthusiasts can reserve a Living History Flight Experience online or in person at air shows. Strap in, put on a headset—and enjoy the sensory experience that, decades ago, had the same sounds and smells.

Looking around the interior, you can almost see anxious young Marines in oxygen masks, poised at their guns and radios, focused on task for eight hours at a time, en route to 30 minutes of feverish combat. Devil Dog Rob Chalmers says, “It’s amazing what the tour does for Veterans. There is something about being in the airplane takes them back to an earlier time and their recollection is very clear.”

BE A PART OF IT Beth Jenkins, owner of Pilot’s Choice, says visitors are welcome to check in at Pilot’s Choice to see the plane.

“Monday through Thursday, someone is here to act as docent and share the history of these great planes and crews. We encourage people to come and visit with their families to be reminded of this important history; a history that will repeat itself if we don’t keep it alive.”

Their monthly membership meetings are also open to the public; offering a great opportunity to meet members and learn more about the group. Meetings are usually followed by work on the aircraft or preparation for the next airshow, allowing you to get up close and personal without the usual crowds that surround the Dog at airshows. Serving with Grace Grace Academy Serves the Georgetown Community

O

n March 30, Grace Academy took a reprieve from classroom learning to allow students to spend a full day serving the community. More than 350 students, teachers, staff, and parent volunteers partnered with local organizations, and served in a variety of ways across the Georgetown area.

Mayor Josh Schroeder met with students before the event to share words of encouragement and appreciation, as well as a stirring charge to serve. “You’re learning to lead through service. That is a powerful tool that unites all of us in Georgetown around a common purpose and strengthens our community. Thank you for your time today and for setting a good example.”

Students in grades K-12 served all over Georgetown, including building rock gardens at The NEST at The Georgetown Project, mulching beds in San Gabriel Park, blessing first responders with Officer Delta Jolly at the Georgetown Police Department, planting flowers for the citizens of BiG, improving Key 2 Free living quarters, packing brown bag lunches for Helping Hands of Georgetown, and many more.

S.A.L.T. OF THE EARTH Grace Academy’s Head of School, Andy Cantwell, explained the mindset behind the day of service; the desire in classical Christian education is for students to not only receive an academically excellent education, but to receive training in virtue and character as well. This year he initiated SALT, “Serving and Learning Together”, with the hope to see it grow into an impactful annual event in the community. He spoke to the kids about a Biblical

principle of being ‘salt and light’; serving the community as part of that.

“We hope, as we grow as a school, we can expand to reach 4th grade students at San Gabriel Park more people and agencies because there are so many wonderful places to serve in the Georgetown area.” Mr. Cantwell was also very intentional about scheduling the event during Holy Week, a time leading up to Easter during which many are thinking about service above self to help others.

Director of Communications, Tiffany McLendon, adds, “Virtue simply means excellence of character. Training in virtue starts in the home and church, but Grace Academy aims to come alongside parents with shared core principles and objectives, committing together to raise Godly young men and women. We are convinced that if we are aligned on the major objectives, we will give our children a profoundly formative academic, social, and spiritual education.”

PARTNERS AND PROJECTS The 3rd grade students, directed by class moms, visited Brookwood in Georgetown (BiG) to help beautify their butterfly gardens. BiG is a vocational community that provides engagement and opportunity for special needs adults; their butterfly garden helps BiG’s Citizens learn

about horticulture and gardening. The students broke down and removed old planters, emptied and hauled dirt, and impressed BiG’s founder, Erin Kiltz, with their commitment and hard work. “This was a wonderful and intentional service opportunity that private schools don’t often have. The students even had a parade that enabled them to interact with our Citizens while socially distancing. It was a benefit for all and I would love to have more days like this in the future.”

Amy Davis, CEO of The Key2Free said, “We had a list we thought would cover the whole day but our senior group knocked it out right away, with smiles, and asked what else they could do to help. I love how well they served our community and applaud Grace Academy for training up the next generation to serve. Some of them have even signed up to volunteer for our upcoming gala fundraiser. We love what they stand for and can’t wait to do more.”

Georgetown Police Officer Delta Jolly had a similar experience. “I got to spend the day with some amazing 1st grade students. They arrived at the Public Operations and Training Center ready to work! We stuffed blue teddy bears into bags so patrol officers could give them to children feeling scared or nervous during a police encounter; anything from a car accident to just being nervous around officers. They finished in record time, so I gave them a tour and they got to talk to dispatcher Michele Cox, to hear how emergent and non-emergent calls are processed. After that, they came back to assemble activity bags for children and hygiene kits. After lunch the kids got to experience the LEOPARD course and our rescue vehicle first-hand. The SALT project did more than help fill bags for the community; it it filled my heart to see the joy they had knowing their service and act of kindness was going to help another child someday.”

Eagle Scout Follows in Family’s Footsteps

N

ot every Boy Scout becomes an Eagle Scout, the highest rank a Scout can achieve but, for Jake Loofs, it was inevitable that he would carry on the family tradition. A 16-year-old sophomore at Rouse High School, Jake is the third Loofs son to become an Eagle Scout. Jake achieved the honor in January as a Scout in Georgetown’s Troop 405. “It was a relief and so rewarding in so many ways,” he shares. “Just to see all the achievements and goals I’ve spent time working towards over the past few years finally come to fruition—it was really nice.”

His choice of service project was an easy one, as both his brothers served at STARRY, a nonprofit organization that helps children and families via counseling, family support services, foster care, fatherhood, and adoption. “It was like carrying on the family tradition,” Jake says. “It’s a cool thing to give back to an organization that gives to so many people.”

led to 30 merit badges (Eagle Scouts need 21). More importantly, he learned lessons in responsibility and perseverance while nurturing camaraderie among friends. It’s those relationships that made his Eagle Scout honor possible, Jake says. “I wouldn’t have gotten here without the leadership in the troop and friends pushing me through it. It’s a collective achievement,” he says.

With the help of fellow Boy Scouts and some of their fathers, Jake assembled and painted new picnic tables and two planter boxes for STARRY’s office in Round Rock. They also did some gardening to improve the scenery. The new and improved outdoor area has been a blessing for STARRY counselors and clients who have been forced to meet virtually or outside during the pandemic.

Not many people realize the impact Scouting has on kids, Jake adds. “I think it provides a unique experience you don’t get anywhere else; learning lessons about first aid, going on campouts and exploring nature with friends,” he shares. “The Eagle-required ones are more important; citizenship, personal fitness, and management. Those are different skills they can really build on.”

LESSONS AND FRIENDSHIPS Since joining the Boy Scouts in 5th grade, Jake has enjoyed fun opportunities like campouts, archery, shooting, and water sports, which

When things get back to normal and in-person Boy Scout meetings resume, Jake plans to continue passing on those lessons by coaching new Scouts. “I’ve been able to give back to the organization that did so much for me,” he says.

STAY-AT-HOME LOVE

Never is motherhood more rewarding for Jenn than during family trips. She didn’t think traveling with kids would be fun, but seeing new places through their eyes makes every trip memorable. “When you’re on an escalator, you’re not thinking how cool an escalator is, or street cobblestones—mundane things you don’t even think about,” she says. One trip to France was especially memorable. “Seeing my little girl play with a little French boy, chasing birds like they would at home, and they can’t speak the same language, I’ve never felt that happiness.

Seeing that joy is the biggest reward.”

GRANDMOTHER LOVE

Having grown up in a broken home without her mom around, Jenn Novak never thought she would become one herself. “I had a tough childhood; I never wanted to put my kids through that,” she says. But thanks to a loving community, wise mothers, and two kids who teach her something new every day, motherhood has been a joyful, heartbreaking, rewarding adventure for Jenn. “I’m figuring out this parenting thing along with my kids,” she says. “I’m always learning and growing. Holy cow, as soon as you seem to get the hang of something or figure out something, they change it up on you. It’s a huge, cool challenge.”

Jenn’s daughter Parker and son Spencer have since joined that family, filling her life with joy as a stay-at-home mom. “When I was on the outside looking in, I thought moms have free time and relax all the time, but it’s not true at all,” she says. But the hectic lifestyle has its benefits, like being able to wear pajamas to work, enjoying the freedom to dictate her schedule, and having a front-row seat to watch her kids grow up.

With three children, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, Diana Smith’s life can be pretty hectic at times. But, she loves every minute of it. “I can sit back and watch my kids raise their children, and then the grandkids raise theirs,” she says.

The road to grandmotherhood wasn’t easy. As a single mother of three young kids after her husband passed away, Diana moved her shop, The Gift Registry, from Cedar Park to a sleepy Georgetown Square in 1989. She

quickly found her place in the community, and worked to transform the Square into a destination by helping start Market Days. Then, when the Palace Theatre was in danger of being torn down, Diana, now a board member, helped raise money to save the historic landmark. “I truly believe the Square wouldn’t be what it is today if it were not for people like her who invested in our future,” says her daughter, Samantha Smith.

After the challenges of working, volunteering, and raising a family, Diana has been glad to step back and watch her loved ones take off while continuing to help guide their lives.

“It was an adventure being there for that many years and watching everything,” she says.

MAKING-A-DIFFERENCE LOVE As Campus Administrator at Texas Baptist Children’s Home (TBCH), Melanie Martinez helps mothers be strong and healthy moms. She has provided motherly leadership and support to hundreds of mothers and families. She oversees programs that foster healthy dynamics between single mothers and their children and also provides support to young adults who are aging out of foster care.

The programs were developed to support mothers, and Melanie strives to meet and embrace them wherever they are in their journey. Then, Family Life Coordinators, who live on campus with the moms, empower and

equip them with tools, information, and resources to help build their confidence and skills. Melanie and other coordinators do the front-line work, assisting and coaching mothers through anything and everything from day-to-day tasks to once-in-alifetime events.

As a mother and grandmother herself, Melanie has had the privilege of sharing her work in the nonprofit sector with her son, often bringing him into work when he was a child. She shared these experiences with him to help him understand the importance of service and giving back to the community. Melanie also highlighted the mothers who live and work on campus, raising their children in an environment where they get to share their call to service day in and day out and the children get to be a part of the support TBCH provides to the families they serve.

THE STRENGTH OF MILITARY LOVE For Major Jo Orozco, Mother’s Day will look different.

Jo is deployed as an Army Medical Corps Officer in Kuwait, so she and her 13-year-old daughter will celebrate in a more unconventional way.

Based out of Camp Mabry, Jo has served for the last 22 years. Currently on her third deployment, she has missed many special life events, but shared her philosophy on finding ways to celebrate special occasions.

“Those events and memories are important and it’s my way of prioritizing family.” This year Jo hopes to spend some quality time with her teenager on Mother’s Day by teaming up to play Fortnite, a hobby they share even when 7,000 miles apart.

While strength and sacrifice sometimes seem like the cornerstones of motherhood, being a military mom has its fair share of added challenges. Despite the challenges, Jo chooses to focus on some of the many benefits that military service has provided for her and her family, like early retirement. With over 20 years of military service, she will be eligible for retirement soon, which means she will spend more quality time with her daughter and the military family she has built throughout her career; saying farewell to special moments.

THE GIFT OF LOVE Stephanie Whitson’s idea of motherhood is next-level love. A visit to the hospital with her son showed her a need she didn’t know existed—children waiting to be adopted who also need organ transplants. Sadly, they are ineligible to receive that gift of life until they have a forever home, so the Whitsons began filling their home by adoption. Stephanie takes credit for nothing except being their mom; “We are just a snapshot in the portrait God is painting for their lives.” After losing her son Julian in 2016 and then Elijah 20 months later, she says she has truly learned, through these kids, the value of having a family. The things that speak to her heart are having experiences together, making joyful moments and never taking one second for granted. On April 6th the family finalized the adoption for Ellie (4), and they are currently waiting on a multi-organ transplant. It is touching to know that there is someone out there to care for these precious children who will have a lifetime of special needs, just to give them a chance in life.

WORKING LOVE Kristin Miller has been a mom and leader in her own family since 2008. In 2012 she started a company that provided an online-based curriculum, where she led and served children, parents, and other educators in education and childhood development. Inspired by her calling to serve and love of teaching, she started her business using her own children to help develop and validate the curriculum that is still in use today. “I practiced my own philosophy of ‘education begins at home and you are your child’s first teacher’,” she says.

Kristin has worn many hats since becoming a mom and she took some giant leaps of faith as a business owner for the benefit of her family. As a mother and CEO, Kristin recommends being flexible and open to change.

“What what may be perceived as enough, may not be what our children or clients want or need. We have to have the mindset that our job, as being a mom, as being a business owner or [being a person] in society, our job is not about us, it’s about those that we serve­­— whether our kids at home or the people we are called to serve in our career.”

For three years Kristin sacrificed time with her own children for her clients, but the loss was not lost on her; so, in 2019, she made the decision to once again flip her business model for the happiness of her children, closing the doors of her Georgetown office and returning to online services.

She recommends moms who also want to be leaders of their own company, ask themselves, “At what cost?”

Knowing her own health and the happiness of her family were on the line, she asked herself the same question then made some decisions that at the time felt like a leap of faith.

Fast forward one year and most of the country was, like Kristin, using virtual platforms for teaching and learning.

From a faith perspective, Kristin believes it was meant to be for her to return to online services. Now, she offers most of her programs virtually while still being present and happy for her children and husband.

ummer is approaching, and many of us may be looking for ways to get out into the community, give back, and get involved. Warmer weather historically brings more animals to the animal shelter, which means summer is a great time to start volunteering at the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter.

In 2020, the Shelter took in 5,491 dogs and cats, and, as Director April Peiffer says, caring for them all takes a village—a village of staff, volunteers, and fosters.

In 2020, the WCRAS had 229 active volunteers who gave 7,688 hours of their time to help continue the lifesaving mission of treating every animal that comes to their facility as an individual while awaiting their new forever homes.

OPPORTUNITIES An animal shelter consists of many moving parts, each of them working together to ensure the best outcome for each animal, and there’s opportunity for volunteerism every step of the way. There are no special requirements to volunteer, and anyone 12 or over is welcome to help; youngsters should be accompanied by an adult until age 15.

Assistance is needed with simple things like dishes and laundry, clean kennels, but there are many opportunities to work directly with the animals, including just reading stories to keep them company. Summertime is perfect for dog walking; the sun is shining and the dogs enjoy splashing around in play yard pools or running through the sprinklers to help themselves cool off. If you prefer to stay indoors where it is cooler, they have many opportunities to help socialize (and relax with) the many cats inside the Adoption Center.

If you are eager to get out into the community and spread the word, the Shelter has trained volunteers who assist with off-site adoption events for dogs—a great way to promote the benefits of adopting. They also have an offsite cat adoption team looking for transporters and caregivers.

They are happy to encourage aspiring artists to help with photography and videography that will tell the stories and promote animals online and in social media, to help them find their forever homes.

April says, “We’d like to invite the community to join our volunteer program this summer. It’s as simple as applying and watching our orientation videos online. We hope you’ll scan the code to get started.”

From Fire Safety to Art Hub

A

mong the paintings and sculptures at the Georgetown Art Center, unique fixtures are telling a story of the past—jailhouse graffiti, a fire pole transformed into a stairwell, a water standpipe base that is now a splash pad. At nearly 130 years old, the building that now houses Georgetown’s art hub was once home to the City Jail, Fire Department, and Georgetown Water Company. Today, it has not only enriched the community through art exhibits and classes but also livened up a once-neglected part of downtown.

In 1892, the first municipal building, a combined City Hall, Calaboose (jail), and Fire Station 1, was built at the corner of Ninth and Main streets. The L-shaped structure wrapped around the water standpipe that served as the city’s water supply at the time, which at 100 feet tall towered over the city’s landscape as Georgetown’s tallest structure.

The Mayor’s Office and City Council Chambers occupied the second floor while the City Marshal’s Office, City Calaboose, and Georgetown Water Company shared the first floor. The volunteer Fire Department took up space throughout the building. Back in that day, two hook-and-ladder trucks and a rescue hose cart were pulled by manpower and horses to fires, where a bucket brigade (fire hose from the rescue hose cart) would put out the flames.

For the next 121 years, the building at 816 South Main Street saw most of these entities come and go, including the Second Baptist Church of Georgetown and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, while the city’s first fire station remained a faithful tenant until 2012, when it moved to the new Fire Station 1 on Industrial Avenue. After serving the citizens through fire safety for more than a century, the building would later become a home for a different kind of public service.

BECOMING THE ART CENTER For years, the art community in Georgetown dreamed of having a place for art galleries, classes for kids and adults, and space for artists to unleash their creativity. Advocates pushed for the creation of an art center, originally targeting the Historic Light and Water Works facility on the west side of downtown being vacated by a growing Police Department. But, when the City began renovating the building at 816 South Main Street, art center supporters saw it as a pilot program opportunity for the art center project. The Georgetown Art Center opened in 2013, featuring art exhibits, classes, and studio space for artists. The City also uses the second floor as a video studio.

The project is just another example of how Georgetown honors its history in a forward-thinking way. “That’s the great thing about Georgetown’s downtown,” former Library Director Eric Lashley says. He was on the committee that worked to create the Art Center. “We’ve been able to reuse and re-purpose historic buildings and keep them vibrant and alive.”

Remnants of the building’s previous life can be seen throughout the space, including the historic fire alarm bell outside, next to the water standpipe base that became a splash pad. “We wanted to make sure we honored the Fire Department. We still wanted to tell that story,” Eric says.

The project also drove foot traffic to a part of downtown that hadn’t seen many visitors, partly because fire trucks had blocked the sidewalk in front of what is now Thundercloud Subs. Now, with a vibrant Art Center and surrounding shops and eateries, “everything is starting to work together,” Eric says. “I see the Art Center as a big part of that.”

The Georgetown Art Center is open to visitors 10am to 6pm Tuesday through Saturday and 1pm-5pm Sunday.

Invitational BUCK-OUT

f you have ever gone to a rodeo just to watch the big event—the bull bucks—you’re in luck. On May 22, the Taylor Rodeo Association is presenting its first-ever all bull riding event, the Bull-Nanza Invitational, at the Williamson County Expo Center.

The association will be holding its 71st annual rodeo in July, but members have been eager to expand their event calendar. Director Keith Hagler says the goal is to provide more scholarship money for college-bound students across the county. The association has been given three dates per year at the Expo center and are always pleased to arrive at bigger and better ways to entertain and support the community while doing what they do best.

THE EVENT Keith explains, “This will be a spectacular event. Participants have to be invited to attend, so we are getting the best of the best. Fans will see 40 of the best riders in the country competing against each other for the first place $15,000 purse.

But, not only that, they will be riding on the ‘rankest’ bulls in the industry as well.”

He says the bulls’ athleticism easily equals that of their riders, and they are all ranked based on how they have performed in rodeos around the country. “The bulls are as competitive as their riders; each one trying to do their own, completely opposite, thing.”

The riders’ goal is to score points with each attempt. They must stay on the animal for 8 seconds, but also must be positioned a certain way on the bull; they can’t touch body parts; and must hold their hands a certain way. All the while, the bull has just one job— to knock the rider off.

Doors open at 6pm and live action begins with drills at 7:30. Tickets are available in advance with the code below, at TaylorRodeo.com, or in person at local Taylor businesses.

Keith also encourages everyone to visit the arena starting early Saturday to watch and enjoy the International Barbecue Cookoff.

There is no fee to visit the trucks, cookers, and pitmasters at work, and perhaps, sweet talk your way into a few taste tests. He says, “The cookoff is a contest so the food is not for sale, but we will have plenty of food trucks and other refreshments for purchase all day, plus some entertainment leading up to the main event. We hope people will enjoy a great day at the expo and stick around to watch the bulls after.”

“Straight Talk” with Chad Jackson

G

eorgetown hosted its first-ever “Straight Talk” event April 10 at Main Street Baptist Church. The all-day seminar featured hip hop artists, ministry leaders, and local leaders who joined together to reach out to kids who are at-risk or simply in need of mentorship.

Georgetown radio host Chad “Church” Carter said he appreciated the opportunity to reach people in person. “It’s also really cool to see our judges not just being the letter of the law but trying to find solutions for individuals.”

Local rap artist Chad Jackson (right) was a headliner at the seminar, created to share speakers’ unique stories about overcoming obstacles and turning negative experiences around, all to inspire kids to make positive life decisions.

Williamson County Justice of the Peace Precinct 3 Judge Evelyn McLean and Chad co-created the event to provide alternatives for young people in her court. “I’m not too proud to realize there are kids out there I’m not able to reach personally. I contacted Chad to discuss ideas on how we can reach our youth, and Straight Talk is the first of, I hope, many opportunities for outreach, open to anyone in the County.”

One young guest (17) attended as a court alternative, and said it was a great experience to share with his dad. “We got a look into the lives of people we can relate to so we can help ourselves. Everyone has bad stuff happen to them and these folks really got the message across. I will definitely take a lot away from it.”

Motivational speakers and mentors spoke about their experiences with everything from parenthood to prison, Straight Talk speakers and guests (L-R) Charles but also shared how Carter, Ruben Aguilar, Michael Nunez, Daniel “Big D” Esquivel, Travis Luce, “Orlando” people and opportunities helped them persevere through things kids are facing today, or faced in the past.

Michael Nunez, director of Convicted2Conquer ministries in San Antonio, said he was pleased to see so many young people in attendance at this event. “Even if only one person was here, we would give that person all the same effort. I’m here to tell kids if you want to see yourself tomorrow, look at your friends today. You become everything you’re around and I am a man of God because I have surrounded myself with Godly men.”

Michael likes to use music as a tool in his work because he sees the kids get into hip hop. “God gave us all our unique talents but it is all about Him, and I always make sure to tell kids that I love them. A lot of us didn’t hear that growing up and it’s too easy for these kids to believe when someone says, ‘I hate you;’ they need to learn to believe it when someone loves them.”

A

s a long-time advocate for education finance reform, Representative Terry Wilson was likely the only person who was surprised he was named Chair of the House Subcommittee on Article III Appropriations.

In simpler terms, Col. Wilson is tasked with leadership of the House subcommittee “where all the money comes from to fund public education.” Fortunately, his background in billion-dollar acquisitions at the Department of Defense gives him ample expertise to manage the onethird of the State’s budget appropriated for public education.

FIRST, REFORM Rep. Wilson explains the legislature is re-working education finance laws to ensure communities and schools are not in competition for the same dollars. He explains, “We slowed the rate of property taxes because 50 to 60 percent goes to school funding. But, that also applied to taxpayers who are not making use of the public school system. Today, the State is taking on more of that burden to provide tax relief to property owners. Our Republican House is being diligent about making sure we are providing the resources our schools need while being respectful to everyone in the community.”

GETTING BACK TO SCHOOL Another priority for the legislature is making sure districts receive the funds they need to continue the mission of educating the next generation.

While schools in Texas are funded based on average daily attendance, changes due to COVID have created an alarming statistic that many children are enrolled but not attending in person, or participating virtually.

Rep. Wilson says, “It is a travesty that we may have a generation of kids who did not receive the education they needed, but we hold the ISDs harmless in these unusual circumstances. As such, the Subcommittee’s primary focus is to make sure our districts have funding necessary to continue paying teachers based on pre-COVID attendance data.”

He shared praise for local school districts, including Georgetown ISD’s Superintendent Dr. Fred Brent, who report greater than 80 percent attendance and, moreover, the teachers who chose to continue to come to school to see to the wellness and education of our children. “My hat is off to GISD Trustees, as well, who have done an excellent job managing COVID expenses and restitution across the board,” he adds.

“NOW, LET’S GO TO MARS!” It is no secret Central Texas is benefiting from a significant influx of high-tech companies opening or relocating to the Lone Star State. In addition to the U.S. Army Futures Command, recent bids by Elon Musk, and Samsung are a harbinger of many career opportunities for the workforce in Williamson County.

This is significant because our forward-thinking Legislature is on the verge of passing HB1525, which will push $260 million into vocational, and career and technical education (CTE) programs all over the state.

Rep. Wilson sums up the need and the benefits; “Success is not only about a four-year college any more, and Texas is making sure every student has access to, and a path in a universe of opportunity as early as middle school.”

Many Texas schools already have CTE programs that enable high school students to start on a pathway to certification that can end with a

The new paradigm is to go full throttle on CTE classes that will help schools fill demands of specific skill sets in every region.

What this means for students is a chance to explore new interests in middle school, and have the opportunity and choice to continue on those paths in high school.

With state-supplied resources, students can continue through Level 4 certification before they even graduate high school, to turn their passions into a high-paying job without the expense of post-secondary education. Dr. Brent noted, “We believe public education is the foundation of our community. These local and federal funds for career and technical education support the district’s commitment to providing programs that align with student interests and support local workforce demands.

Wilson says. “It may even bring more kids back to public schools and raise parent satisfaction. I am prepared to push the envelope with this vision. Everyone is paying for public education whether they use it or not; let’s open the envelope, like they do in college, and let kids sign up for the classes they need, not just the ones where they are.”

“How the virus and sequestration taught me something new, something positive!”

S

un City resident Doug Lytton says, “If there’s anything we’ve learned in the past year, the number one most important thing in life is good health.

Without it, we can’t live the lives we want. So, with that thought in mind, this quasi house arrest we’re in offers a silver lining—if we want to find it.”

In addition to good health, Doug has also chosen to focus on the importance of having a group of people he considers family and friends. “We are all faced with the risk of contracting COVID-19 if and when the economy opens up again. We senior folks, I am 78, are the vulnerable demographic, but we must also be able to live our lives too.”

His question, in these later times, is how to spend precious days most effectively—in quarantine or setting sails for Madagascar? “We sure don’t need to be fearful creatures, right? I’m gonna tell you a story about my cast iron skillet. Like me, it’s old too.”

My wife Terry inherited the black skillet from her mother, who lived to be age 87. Terry’s mom inherited it from Mimi, Terry’s grandmother, who lived to age 89.

Terry inherited it about 12 years ago, when her mother passed away. So it has to be over 100 or, probably, even older.

The old skillet means something to me. In fact, until recently, I’d never cooked with one in my life. I thought they were dangerous, and thought it too complicated to properly refurbish the thing with salt. You’re probably asking, who cares? Okay, here’s the thing—certain foods taste better when cooked in the black skillet.

Six months ago I weighed 221 pounds. Maybe you couldn’t say I was obese, but no matter how politically correct you say it, I was a fat pig. But, this is me (photo right) after six months of cooking with the skillet.

Doug has two skillets now and does about 90 percent of his cooking in them. He swears by them for better cooking because they heat so evenly, which allows food to have consistent texture and temperature.

OLD AND NEW LIFE Doug says his daughter inspired his skillet-love, after she lost 75 pounds, and changed her outlook, through diet and exercise. After talking with Adrienne, he took a look at his Sun City lifestyle and how he had time-trav46

eled back to high school; going to parties all the time, with no mom and dad telling him what to do.

After six years of fun, sun, and partying, I grew tired of it. My goal now, since COVID-19, is to be healthy and feel good. Losing 50 pounds and converting adipose blubber into muscle is a long journey. But, six months in—that’s not so long—I can see and feel the progress. It feels good.

So, the skillet has helped me stay on track. Many veggies have met their fate in the black skillet!

Doug hopes that, perhaps, the legacy of better eating habits, exercise, and appreciation for what we do have; family and friends, has demonstrated to everyone about how precious life is. He has lost friends over the past year and truly believes good health means so much more in a COVID-19 world.

“Whether or not the old skillet actually makes a difference to me is moot—it represents a better way of preparing food. Bon apetit! So, with health as the main focus, my attention is now looking through the lens of our garden.” As such, he has given himself a new title; Grounds Keeper for Dougie’s Meditation Garden on Cowan Creek.

Living Well with Memory Loss F

orgetting recent events, getting lost in a familiar area—signs that point to a difficult road ahead. But, experiencing memory loss doesn’t mean life is over; just that the journey will be different. Josie Zamora, Founder and Executive Director of A Gift of Time, says, “Adults living with memory loss are still part of our families, our community, and we want to keep them engaged. Their lives have meaning and purpose. The best way to take on the challenge of memory loss is to have information to guide you through the journey, and not to go through it alone.”

Steps Josie recommends: Understand Memory Loss: Dementia is a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving, and other thinking abilities severe enough to interfere with daily life. Although dementia mostly affects older adults, it is not a part of normal aging. Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia; to learn more about other forms visit CDC.gov/aging/dementia.

See Your Doctor: If you are worried that you or a loved one may be having memory issues, schedule a doctor’s visit. Come prepared with questions, a list of all prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements that may have side effects that could cause memory problems. Other medical conditions like depression, vitamin deficiencies, excessive alcohol, and thyroid problems may also affect memory.

Exercise: Do any activity you enjoy that gets you moving; “If you love to listen music, turn on the radio and turn it up!” Josie says. “It makes you feel good, and research shows music can help manage stress, decrease anxiety, stimulate memories, improve communication, and provide an outlet to express feeling.”

Eat Healthy: Instead of restricting your diet, modify your usual dishes to make them healthier. Fill your plate with more vegetables than meat, whether that’s a serving of grilled vegetables or homemade salsa. Learn more about healthy eating and single meal portion guidelines at MyPlate.gov.

Sleep and Meditation: Research shows the importance of sleep and how it affects memory; adults should have 7-9 hours per night. A good night’s sleep allows your body to heal and your brain to replenish itself. Meditation, praying, thinking positive thoughts, or simply having some quiet time, minus technology, and other distractions is also restful. Talk to your doctor if you have trouble sleeping.

Socialize: “Socializing with your friends, neighbors, and family helps reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation,” Josie says. “And it’s important not only for people with memory loss, but caregivers as well.” It’s very therapeutic, she says, to talk about your journey with someone else going through the same experience.

Community Engagement: Social interaction is healthy for mind, body, and soul. Studies show staying socially active with family and friends helps improve well-being.

Participating in a smaller social event is better than a larger group, as those living with memory loss can be overwhelmed by a large social event.

If you’re looking for ideas, there are many agencies and community groups that provide programs, support, and resources. A Gift of Time (AGiftOfTimegeorgetown.org) is one such community in Georgetown that uplifts those with memory loss, and provides respite time for their caregivers.

Camille’s Memory Café, presented by A Gift of Time, is a virtual social gathering opportunity for families living with Alzheimer’s and other related dementias to socialize with others in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment. The program focuses on facilitating conversation, creativity, and connection with others. All are invited to join these virtual social gatherings.

Revolutionary Research Georgetown Neuroscience Foundation Empowers Brain Health through Study

espite being a rapidly growing problem accompanied by skyrocketing medical costs, neurodegenerative diseases and their causes, prevention, and cure remain a mystery to researchers around the world. In light of this, the Georgetown Neuroscience Foundation (GNF) hopes to do for brain research what the Framingham Heart Study did for heart research—provide groundbreaking knowledge to solve the mysteries of a major organ, with the ultimate goal of helping treat and prevent devastating diseases.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, people 65 years and older will outnumber those under 18 by 2034.

GNF Executive Director Mike Douglas says, “We have an aging demographic and a disease that basically seems to be impacting it more and more. There is a very strong need to address this.”

GRASSROOTS EFFORT In 2019, a handful of retirees and city leadership met in Sun City to discuss that impact, and they decided to launch a project. Their goal was to prove that the loss of mental ability is not a natural part of the aging process; that the brain can remain active and engaged over the course of a long life.

The idea galvanized the Georgetown community and, soon, standing-room only meetings hosted leaders like Dr. David Paydarfar, Chair of the Department of Neurology at Dell Medical School, and others from the UT Southwestern Medical Center. The new collective created the Georgetown Neuroscience Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to improving brain health through research, education, and outreach.

The group now works with The University of Texas System and focuses on combating neurodegenerative diseases; i.e., conditions that eat

away at the brain and spinal cord, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and traumatic brain injury.

Following two town halls, GNF collected more than 500 signatures from residents in Sun City and other age-restricted communities who are passionate about furthering research on neurological diseases. The study is still in its early stages and will need thousands of participants—not just from Georgetown. Mike adds, “It’s called Georgetown, but with its web portal, it will essentially involve the world.”

GAME-CHANGING MODEL In the 1940s, a time when heart disease was accepted as a natural part of aging, the community of Framingham, Massachusetts, mobilized. Residents partnered with Boston University, recorded their diets and exercise, and connected those metrics with their heart health.

Framingham inspired radical approaches to medication and treatment, the Mediterranean diet, anti-smoking policies, and entire industries devoted to wellness.

GNF plans to do the same thing for neurodegenerative diseases.

Using the Framingham Study as its model, the organization will conduct a community-driven, multi-generational study and observe how participants’ diet, sleep, and daily exercise affect their brains. GNF will share data with the pharmaceutical industry and other neurological research organizations to help them understand the causes of neurodegenerative diseases.

According to GNF, Georgetown is a unique location for this type of study because of its large number of engaged seniors, committed volunteers, and collaborative relationships with Texas medical research centers.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED The study’s initial phase involved fundraising, partnering with schools, setting up a data platform and study design, and recruiting an initial 500 participants.

GNF plans to expand involvement to 5,000, reach more diverse, underserved populations, extend the study’s geographic reach, and continue the study across generations.

Last month, UT Dell Medical and GNF opened a pilot study using a simple survey questionnaire to enroll interested study participants, collect demographic information, and establish their use of technology (smart phones, computers, Zoom, electronic calendars, etc.). The survey is available through the GNF website (code at right) or on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

WHAT MAKES TEXAS “TEXAS”?

What Makes Texas Tasty TEXAS TASTE Not everyone is fortunate enough to have been born in Texas, but many who arrive in the state quickly learn, and refuse to live without the wonderful and famous tastes that originated here.

BLUE BELL ICE CREAM Blue Bell ice cream started on a hot summer day in 1907.

Local businessmen in Brenham, Texas, founded the Brenham Creamery Company to make butter from excess cream brought in by area farmers. A few years later, they began making ice cream and delivering it to neighbors by horse and wagon. In 1930, the company changed

its name to Blue Bell Creameries after the native Texas bluebell wildflower.

They continued to make butter until 1958 when Blue Bell began to focus full time on making ice cream.

Texans got to keep Blue Bell to themselves until the 1980s, when they company began selling outside the state for the first time. It is now sold in 22 states and is well-known for being some of the best ice cream in the country.

WHATABURGER It’s not just any restaurant that can be lawfully declared a “Texas Treasure.” But, in 2001, during the 77th Texas Legislative Session, a bill was

passed proclaiming Whataburger just that. Never to be confused with the What-A-Burger chain in Virginia, the Texas company was founded in 1950 by Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton, who wished to “make a better burger when you took a bite you would say, ‘What a burger!’” Dobson’s goal was to make a burger so big it needed two hands, so he commissioned a bakery in Corpus Christi to custom make five-inch hamburger buns. When the bakery reported their pans were too small, he commissioned a manufacturer to create new pans to get it done.

Dobson certainly had success in his DNA; when he wasn’t busy drilling for oil or working as a diamond courier, he was relaxing as an airplane pilot. It was his idea to paint the restaurants orange and white, so he would be able to identify them from the air.

A 2015 poll from Fastcompany determined Whataburger is not only the best burger in Texas; it’s also the best in America. No Texans were surprised by this fact.

DR PEPPER Dr Pepper was created in 1885 by Charles Alderton, a pharmacist worked in a drugstore in Waco. He liked mixing flavors at the fountain and wasn’t satisfied with the standard fruity mixes. The drink was originally called “The Waco” but legend has it that Charles named it “Dr. Pepper” after the father of a young girl he was once in love with. Although the original “Pepper” may have been a physician, the company dropped the period from the Dr in the 1950s as part of a redesign of the corporate logo; some say it was easier to read.

Like Coca-Cola, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Bush’s Baked Beans, the formula for Dr Pepper’s blend of 23 flavors is a closely guarded secret, although the company has admitted “prunes” are not one of those flavors.

The drink was only available regionally for many years, mostly due to so many bottlers having been locked into agreements with Coke and Pepsi. But, in 1963, a federal court decided the unique flavor was not a “cola”, so companies all over the nation were able to produce and sell one or more of the big three drinks together.

It is also one of few soft drinks that have a “hot” recipe for winter enjoyment... Heat Dr Pepper in a saucepan to 180°, place a thin slice of lemon in the bottom of a coffee mug or insulated cup, and pour the heated Dr Pepper over the lemon.

SHIPLEY DO-NUTS In 1936, Lawrence Shipley, Sr. created a recipe for gourmet Do-nuts. He cut the dough by hand and served his donuts hot all day out of his bakery in Houston. At first, his treats were sold wholesale for 5¢ a dozen, but within ten years, he was personally delivering his 60 varieties to retail markets. Shipley’s evolved into a solid family business; his wife and son managed the bakery and continued to serve up hot donuts while he was on the road. Today they have more than 300 stores in ten states. So, while Krispy Kreme (1937) may think they have the market cornered on hot-in-store donuts, our Texas pioneers beat them to it by a year.

SUPER SKILLETS DOUG LYTTON’S FAVORITE STEAK* • Use a “Cowboy Cut,” bone-in Rib eye, aged, marbled, about 1-1/2” to 2-1/2” thick. If you do not see them in the meat case of your super market, ask the butcher to cut them for you.

• Place steaks onto a sheet pan, sprinkle Himalayan salt and ground peppercorn on both sides, making sure to pat it into the meat. Adam’s Reserve products, especially the All Purpose rub are a good alternate option.

• Take meat out of the refrigerator at least one hour before placing in the skillet.

• Sprinkle the tops of each rib eye with chopped fresh rosemary.

• Turn flame/burner to medium. Give it about a minute; drop a dollop of virgin olive oil into the skillet, let sizzle for about 30 seconds. Add 1/2 stick butter. For most things, salted butter is the best, but for this recipe, I recommend unsalted, since you have already salted the steak.

• Tilt the pan, side-to-side, to make sure the skillet is well coated. Place steak in pan when the butter/olive oil starts turning brown, constantly baste with bubbly mixture.

• After 6 minutes, turn steak over and cook/baste 6 minutes more.

• Immediately remove the steak to a large enough plate to accommodate the juices that will leak, then place on cutting board. I like to collect the juices to make a delicious au jus. Pour three ounces of the steak’s juices- fat -in a skillet over medium-high heat. Whisk flour into beef fat; cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens, about 3 minutes.

• Let steak rest 5-10 minutes. Slice across the grain.

VEGGIES THAT LOVE THE SKILLET TOMATOES It is a myth that you can not cook acidic foods in cast iron. As long as your pan is well-seasoned, you can cook tomatoes over low-heat for great flavor. Heat pan to about 385°, add tomatoes and cook 10-15 or until they begin to burst.

Shake the pan, then allow them to cook 5 more minutes to sear the sides. Your finished product is a sweet and juicy addition to any summer salad.

CORN Perfect in mid- to late summer, corn loves the high heat of cast iron to bring out even more sweetness in the kernels. Trim the kernels and toss them into a hot oiled pan. Season with salt and pepper; stir and allow to cook for a few minutes. Your preferred cooking time depends on the volume of corn in the pan, juiciness of the kernels, and your skillet temperature. Stir occasionally to sear the outsides evenly.

CARROTS The high heat of an iron skillet creates greater sweetness in carrots, and caramelizes the tips. Use very little oil on a well-seasoned skillet.

Cook on medium-high heat, uncrowded, and not stirred too often. Garnish and drizzle with balsamic vinegar.

SKILLET APPLE CRISP • 6 apples peeled, cored and chopped into chunks • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

• pinch of Kosher salt

• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 1 vanilla bean

STREUSEL TOPPING

• 1-1/2 c oats

• 1 cc chopped pecans

• 1/2 c packed light brown sugar

• 1/4 cup flour

• 1/2 tsp cinnamon

• 1/4 tsp nutmeg

• 1/4 tsp Kosher salt • 6 tbsp cold unsalted butter

INSTRUCTIONS In medium bowl, mix oats, pecans, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.

Cut 6 tbsp butter into small pieces and, with fingers, massage butter into the mixture until incorporated fully. Set aside.

In large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt.

Over medium heat, melt 3 tbsp butter in a 10-inch cast iron or oven-proof skillet.

With sharp knife; on a cutting board, slice down the middle of the vanilla bean.

Gently scrape small egg-looking vanilla bean specks. Add vanilla to melted butter and stir about a minute.

Increase heat for the skillet to medium-high and add coated apples. Cook 5 minutes, tossing apples gently in the vanilla butter. Remove from heat and evenly scatter the streusel topping over the apples.

Alpha Mom I

t’s Mother’s Day. The day mom gets breakfast in bed and flowers. Who am I kidding... all I really want is 60 minutes to myself and maybe an off-budget $7.50 to get a quarter pounder and french fries I won’t have to share after my offspring snarfs his fries in 42 seconds and is “Stiiiiiill hungryyyyy.”

I do love being a mom, of course. But it’s a lot of pressure. See, you may not know this yet, because everyone is busy fussing about the Zoomer-Boomer rivalry and how Millennials are starting to call themselves “old” (that sound you hear is my eyes rolling) but... the newest generation—born in the early 2010s—are called Alphas.

I happen to be in a very, very tiny minority of Gen-Xers who have Alpha children. This means I have unique Venn diagram of things I’m teaching and translating to my son, with very few intersections of things he actually needs to know.

I don’t imagine very many Millennials have ever told their Zoomer kids to “roll up” the window, “dial” or “hang up” the phone, or asked for a reminder to “tape” their favorite shows. I also get a really weird look when I say I want to “burn” a CD. My son is not old enough yet, but I am already wondering if I’ll ever have to teach him how to write a check. Don’t even get me started on mix tapes.

Funny to think of how long those things actually existed. The more technological things are, the shorter their life span. Humans wrote checks for a couple of centuries.

Those that had them, “dialed” a phone for about 70 years.

Side note: As far as hanging up goes, there is absolutely no gratification in angrily pushing the END button like there was when you slammed a phone receiver into the cradle and enjoyed the resonating clang that followed you out of the room. Also, in sensory fun, wasn’t it equally satisfying to slap an actual book closed when you finished the last page... more so than gently sliding the button to “off” on a Kindle? Moving on...

Media fans used VCRs from 1956 until the mid-2000s, and burned CDs for about 15 years. At this rate, maybe we will get lucky and TikTok will be obsolete by 2025.

On the plus side, as a Gen-Xer, I am solidly and happily on the outside of much generational nitpicking. I think it’s hilarious that Zoomers tell Millennials their skinny jeans and side-parted hairdos are “old.” Those are the people who laughed at my slouch socks and turtlenecks, so they have it coming. I am unbelievably happy to sit back and proclaim, “I don’t care what anyone thinks of my momjeans, I still love Phil Collins, and yes, I have watched all 12 seasons of ‘Frasier’ many times, because it’s hilarious.”

Perhaps I have simply reached the age of “Warning” by Jenny Jones, and didn’t realize it. Some of her best lines...

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me. ...You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat And eat three pounds of sausages at a go And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

I read that poem, the first time, in 1982 and it felt impossibly far away, but I think I might have arrived there.

From this side of 50, I have a good understanding of why my parents thought children of the 80s had lost their minds. I still love my scrunchies and Ferris Bueller, but I do wonder what we were thinking with those bangs.

Thankfully, Alpha Son is still too young to be embroiled in the generation conversation, so I have a few more years before he notices how lame I am. I can only imagine what kinds of things he will have to teach me when he realizes I’m obsolete. Meanwhile, I’m still on the phone trying to tell my mother, for the 100th time, how to cut, copy, and paste.... “No, you don’t TYPE c-o-n-t-r-o-l, you push the button with that word on it... never mind, I’ll be right there.”

Purrfect Mural Spotlights Animal Shelter

hanging negative perspectives and inspiring the community are the Georgetown Animal Shelter’s goals for its “Pick me!” mural—the latest addition to the city’s growing art scene. “Some people believe animal shelters are a place of sadness and cruelty,” says April Haughey, the city’s Animal Services Manager. “We view animal shelters, truly, as a place for second chances, hope, and a safe haven for homeless, unwanted, and lost animals. We thought a mural would inspire the community to ask about our mission and help us change some people’s perspectives on animal shelters.”

Mural artist Jason Tetlak’s design, “Pick me!” is bright, cheerful, and inspiring, and it encompasses everything the shelter hopes to accomplish through its work. It highlights the importance of adopting from shelters, and the eye-catching design is sure to attract members of the community, which only enhances the shelter’s ability to make a difference one pet at a time.

To highlight the many animals waiting for their forever homes, as well as the shelter’s lifesaving animal rescue and adoption work, Jason painted the “Pick me!”

mural at the shelter last month. “I am always looking for projects that use art as a way of transforming public spaces,” he says. “This project not only does that, but it also serves as a way to support a shelter that provides homeless, injured, lost, and neglected pets a second chance at a long, happy life. I’m very honored to have been chosen to work on it.”

A mural artist from Jacksonville, Florida, Jason was chosen by the shelter and the Georgetown Arts and Culture Board to design and install the shelter mural.

His artistic footprint can be seen across the country with works like “No Sleep,” a mural in Jacksonville that features the Beastie Boys rock group, and holds the Guinness World Record for largest 3D/Anaglyph* painting.

Jason is known for creating bold, colorful pieces, and this new artwork is no exception. “Bright colors have a way of affecting people in a positive way. I hope putting an eye-catching design on this shelter will help draw attention to the great work they are doing here,” he says.
