One of the most picturesque and recognizable buildings on the historic square, the building located at 701 Main St. in Georgetown was constructed as the San Gabriel Masonic Lodge No. 89 in 1900 at a cost of $8500. The cornerstone, laid July 6, 1900, was donated by George Washington Glasscock, the son of the pioneer who donated the land for the City.

When the “Great Hurricane” hit on September 9, 1900 there was concern that the storm winds would destroy the partially-constructed building. It was completed in December 1900, and became the flagship for its contractor, Belford Lumber Company who gained notoriety for building many of Georgetown’s historic “hurricane-proof” homes.

Over the years, in addition to the Masons, the building has been home to professional offices, a drug store, the Post Office, a diner and soda fountain, several restaurants including Georgetown’s first 4-star restaurant, and a furniture store.

Today it is the home of Gumbo’s, Georgetown’s premier destination for seafood, steak and Cajun food.

The historic Walburg Mercantile building, now Walburg Restaurant, was built in 1882 by Mr. Hy Doering from Walburg, Germany. After migrating to America as a young man, he purchased acreage north of Georgetown, Texas, and named the town after his birthplace. He encouraged fellow German immigrants to settle in the area by selling land to them.

From trail drives to women getting the vote, Williamson County has seen it all. The museum provides residents and visitors alike an opportunity to experience our colorful past.

Current exhibits include the founding of the county, the Civil War, early schools and the Hispanic heritage of Williamson County.

Special events held monthly are the Salon at Wildfire, Hands on History, and First Friday. Weekly courthouse tours are offered each Friday and Saturday. The museum’s educational programs serve almost 12,000 K-12 students K-12 in county districts. Those programs are headlined by traveling trunks, field trips, and Pioneer Day at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

The Coupland Tavern, built in 1910, was formerly a hardware store. It also housed a newspaper called the Coupland World Globe News. In 1991, Barbara and Tim Worthy converted the former Speckles Grocery into a Texas-sized dance hall, and named it Coupland Dance Hall & Tavern.
