It's also now wholly owned and operated by the Kriewald family who say working with family is the best of all worlds. Dad, Russ, opened the center in Summer 2016, and his daughter Dr. Kelsi Kriewald provides clinical care for wellness maintenance, spine alignment and acute pain management. Mom, Darlene worked at Dell for more than 20 years and started at the clinic in October. "I am thrilled to be here watching how great my daughter is with patients and helping build our family business together. Our office is open seven days a week, but we have support on the weekends so we still have good life balance at home." Kelsi says working with mom and dad is a great change. "I prefer it because the dynamic is much more comfortable and when we are happy, our patients are part of that interaction and they become more relaxed and comfortable." Dr. Kriewald says it is preferable to work with people with whom she has such a stable and understanding relationship. "Working hard for common goals and being able to ask (or tell) each other to do things makes for an optimum workplace."
Feedback from patients seems to validate and mirror the family's ease around each other. Darlene says; "They are more laid back and calm. We can tell when people are nervous sometimes but we put them at ease and calm them a bit. When I say 'I’m her mom', they relax and feel like they are at home." Russ also owns a contracting business in Georgetown, but says he is also pleased to have his family managing operations. "I don't have to check in to see if things run smoothly. I can feel confident and we talk about business for about 15 minutes when we get home, then leave the business at the office and become just family again." Darlene also gives credit to her other daughter, Kari, who lives in South Austin but provides wellness coordination and a growing social media presence and outreach for the business. And, it seems to be working. Kelsi reports they are serving patients nearly back-to-back. (Pun sort-of intended) "We do get a break to relax and hang out with each other, but we are growing well enough to plan two more locations in Central Texas very soon. Chiropractic care is growing because wellness is always easier and cheaper
than illness. We also find that our patient list includes more and more nurses and doctors who are current and younger generation and the really appreciate the blending of medicine and wellness as a lifestyle." Every day, the Joint provides quality, affordable chiropractic care without insurance hassles or even an appointment. The Georgetown office is open for adjustments seven days a week and after hours to help with wellness maintenance, adjustments and acute pain management. Russ says, "If you hurt yourself on Saturday, you don’t have to wait for business hours for relief. A lot of people don’t realize pain is not the first sign of a problem.” Darlene is certain about what makes The Joint special to her; "We can still leave at 7pm and say 'I love you'. Sometimes we even schedule vacations together when we're not at the office. Good family, good business and happy clients. It's a pleasure to share that while helping keep people healthy." Russ adds, "We do not just put a client through standard, repeated adjustments. We listen to our patients and adjust according to how they feel on that day. Each has a keycard that tracks every visit, even in an-

GETTING KIDS ON TRACK AT OPEN ROAD Most parents take note of their
children's physical and intellectual milestones like walking and reading but how do we know if they are up to speed emotionally or spiritually as well? Kathy Keller is a member of Open Road Biker Church in Jarrell and has developed a course to help parents do just that. With a background in child development, 30 years teaching in Georgetown ISD and NAEYC accreditation, she has adapted a new, free seminar with lessons from Sissy Goff's Are My Kids on Track? Instruction focuses on spiritual and emotional growth at all ages and is open to anyone planning, raising or working with kids. "Children are a precious gift from God and I think, with His guidance and wisdom, it's our responsibility to create a solid foundation for their healthy development." She says this particular class was inspired by the frequency of shooting incidents but the idea goes back many years; "Today there are so many incidences where young people have taken their anger out on others and left many injured or dead. I got really sad and wondered why it seems like the outcomes have gotten so much worse. I believe God spoke to me and I asked him to use me however He could—whatever I can do to make a difference. The way to do that is to go back to my teaching roots." Keller says she had an often challenging childhood and happened upon an elective family course in college that resonated immediately. "My dream was to get married someday, have a family and to be the best parent I could be." She changed her major to Home Economics because she wanted to know more and later taught parenting and child development as an elective course at Georgetown High School. "More often than not, students would tell me at the end of the semester that my
course should really be mandatory. They learned so much about broken family life and that things could really be different from their own various or dysfunctional experiences. They were sponges and I believe we planted seeds for healthy adulthood and stable families." Classes will be interactive and will include dialogue, group discussion and exercises. "Technology leaves us with families at the dinner table all looking at their phones. I want to foster a sense of re-connection and using time together to really grow and support children with our time and attention. We are all busy and have to work, but I am passionate about how we establish priorities and how can we make our
children feel important and loved." MAYOR'S UPDATE One Extraordinary CommUNITY
Mindful of the
ongoing national dialogue regarding public trust and policing, the Georgetown Police Department has created a new initiative called CommUNITY. The program is a framework for community engagement and is the brainchild of Police Chief Wayne Nero. I’d like to share with you an overview of the CommUNITY initiative, and in so doing, I think you’ll see how people from across Georgetown are becoming involved. The initiative recognizes that the police department can take a leadership role in bringing elements of the community together. The police department is more likely to be successful in its primary mission of protecting public safety when there are strong connections among various stakeholder groups in the community. The name of the initiative, CommUNITY, places emphasis on the unity in community.
That idea also is expressed in the vision statement for the CommUNITY initiative—One Extraordinary Community. The mission of the initiative that supports this vision is to forge strong relationships across various stakeholder groups that provide opportunities for constructive dialogue—or problem-solving— which, through mutual trust and understanding, enables unity that is sustainable. Seven stakeholder groups in the community are the focus of the program. These include neighborhoods, youth, the business community, seniors, faith-based organizations, non-governmental or social service organizations, and news media. Members of the Georgetown Police Department as well as volunteers with the department aim to be engaged with these stakeholder groups in a way that is guided by eight principles: accountability, compassion,
justice, kindness, knowledge, patience, respect, and unity. The police department currently works to strengthen engagement with stakeholder groups through a range of programs and efforts. Some of these programs were started many years ago while others are just beginning. Come on Down to the Cotton Country Club

If you haven’t been there
yet, the Cotton Country Club is a must-see. And a must-dine. Open since 1999 and previously known as the Cotton Club, they recently changed the name to add a little more southern flair to the name; mirroring the chilled out ambiance inside and out. Inside is a cozy country feel with a large bar, banquet style dining around a huge dance floor and a nice view from the balcony on the upper deck. Perfect for a nice night out for dinner and two-stepping. Or you can head outside to their spacious courtyard for the second half of country & western and enjoy fresh air surrounded by gardens, fountains and a lot of western flair. Owner Jill Cox says since the City of Granger was in the middle of a facade project, it seemed a good time to freshen the name with the new look. The club is family-owned and -operated and is family friendly; babies to grand-
mas. The Club has long been a popular spot in Granger and towns around. Cox has created a full menu, chock full of homemade comfort food and family favorites, including burgers, steaks, salad and seafood. Her large dance floor is perfect for live music for the country crowd. “We have a large group of musicians who frequent the club, including regulars ‘Can’t Hardly Play Boyz’ and an open mic jam session every Sunday afternoon. She adds the music is usually acoustic but is always danceable. On Fridays in April, dinner guests enjoyed acoustic favorites by the handsome and talented Brian Hankins and couples waltzed and two-stepped between tastes and sips. The May schedule includes the likes of The Merles, Second Hand Rose and Jason Allen. Cox says, "The food and music have created quite a following and there is always a crowd of fun and friendly people who socialize quite a bit; couples, families and singles alike.” Cox says the Club has a rather large following and guests can expect all
kinds of music on the weekends. She is also delighted that they never really

know who might show up. “We’ve had Freddie Fender and Dierks Bentley here. A lot of times, folks who are in and around Austin for a festival or benefit, they’ll come here for the afternoon jam session and give people a treat.” The Can’t Hardly Play Boyz are pretty much her house band and have been bringing in Sunday crowds
since the club opened. Her husband, Bubba, is the lead and has been playing with the greats for many years. “Sunday has always been our big day and we also do a lot of benefits for the community because we live here and it’s our honor to give back.” The Cotton Country Club is open Fridays and Saturdays at 5pm and Sundays at

NEW SHINGLES VACCINE BETTER PROTECTION FOR SENIORS Dear Savvy Senior, A good friend of mine got a bad case of shingles last year and has been urging me to get vaccinated. Should I? Suspicious Susan Dear Susan, Yes! If you’re 50 or older, there’s a new shingles vaccine on the market that’s far superior to the older vaccine, so now is a great time to get inoculated. Here’s what you should know. Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a burning, blistering, often excruciating skin rash that affects around 1 million Americans each year. The same virus that
causes chickenpox causes shingles. What happens is the chickenpox virus that most people get as kids never leaves the body. It hides in the nerve cells near the spinal cord and, for some people, emerges later in the form of shingles. In the U.S., almost one out of every three people will develop shingles during their lifetime. While anyone who’s had chickenpox can get shingles, it most commonly occurs in people over age 50, along with people who have weakened immune systems. But you can’t catch shingles from someone else. Early signs of the disease include pain, itching or tingling before a blistering rash appears several days later, and can last up to four weeks. The rash typically occurs on one side of the body, often as a band of blisters that extends from the middle of your back around to the breastbone. It can also appear above an eye or on the side of the face or neck. In addition to the rash, about 20 to 25 percent of those who get shingles go on to develop severe nerve pain (post-herpetic neuralgia, or PHN) that can last for months or even years. And in rare cases, shingles can also cause strokes, encephalitis, spinal

New Shingles Vaccine
The Food and Drug Administration recently approved a new vaccine for shingles called Shingrix (see Shingrix.com), which provides much better protection than the older vaccine, Zostavax. Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Shingrix is 97 percent effective in preventing shingles in people 50 to 69 years old, and 91 percent effective in those 70 and older. By comparison, Zostavax is 70 percent effective in your 50s; 64 percent effective in your 60s; 41 percent effective in your 70s; and 18 percent effective in your 80s. Shingrix is also better that Zostavax in preventing nerve pain that continues after a shingles rash has cleared – about 90 percent effective versus 65 percent effective. Because of this enhanced protection, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone age 50 and older, receive the Shingrix vaccine, which is given in two doses, two to six months apart. Even if you’ve already had shingles, you still need these vaccinations because reoccurring cases are possible. The CDC also recommends that anyone previously vaccinated with Zostavax be revaccinated with Shingrix. You should also know that Shingrix can cause some adverse side effects for some people, including muscle pain, fatigue,
headache, fever and upset stomach. Shingrix – which costs around $280 for both doses – is (or will soon be) covered by insurance including Medicare Part D prescription drug plans, but be aware that the shingles vaccines are not always well covered. So before getting vaccinated, call your plan to find out if it’s covered, and if so, which pharmacies and doctors in your area you should use to insure the best coverage. Or, if you don’t have health insurance or you’re experiencing medical or financial hardship, you might qualify for GlaxoSmithKline’s Patient Assistance Program, which provides free vaccinations to those who are eligible. Meet Officer Chris Bryce and Sarge
(above), who once chased a drug dealer out of Florence without so much as a sniff. Sarge recently retired from service to the Florence Police Department and was fortunate enough to return to his first family to help train other dogs. But, mostly to be
back, sleeping on the bed with his human, Tyler (8), who never thought of him as a police officer but simply his first mansbest-friend. "They had a wonderful reunion," says Deb Brown, Tyler's aunt who helps train dogs. "When we found out Sarge was going to retire, we were glad they offered to have him back in the family and surprised Tyler.

It's so great to have him back with the little boy who feels like he raised him. Every day, again, he walks him and takes care of him." Tyler's dad, Dan, works with and trains dogs for a private security company. He works with K9s on oil rigs and other traffic areas searching for weapons and drugs. Sarge was a shining example of his craft and for a time was the only civilian-owned dog on the Williamson County Sheriff's Office call list. Dan donated Sarge to Florence for his friend, Officer Chris Bryce, when he heard there was a need. On September 11, 2014, Sarge started at FPD with Officer Bryce to search and find drugs and provided support not just for Florence but all over Williamson County. "It was amazing. I had a world-class national champion canine dropped in my lap. FPD was generous in outfitting the vehicle and the WCSO gave us regular training and help. Wednesday nights we trained with the Sheriff's Office," Bryce says. "When their dogs were unavailable, Sarge was always on call. He was a hard-working partner and any time we went through a parking lot, he always found something."
The inimitable bond between handler and dog grew as Sarge showed off his skills; understanding commands in five languages, routinely finding his bounty but also playing with water bottles and Kongs. "I spent more time with Sarge for 3-1/2 years than anyone else in my life." Bryce has since honored Sarge and will always have him close by—on his upper arm (photo left). "Sarge is a single purpose dog. He is trained to sniff out drugs but is also programmed for protection mode. When they tested him, they had to give up the sleeve because he was loyal and had so much power in bite mode." Bryce tells a story about a routine traffic stop in which the passenger was a known local drug dealer. "We could never prove anything he was up to but during that traffic stop, I mentioned to him that we would soon have a K9 officer and he said 'You have a canine? Then I'm moving.' And he did." After serving the public and in private security, Sarge had some health issues and, while it was hard to do so, Bryce decided Sarge was ready to return to the little boy who just loved him like a dog. Bryce says, "I got transferred to a great job in Jarrell PD and they didn't have a K9 unit. I couldn't bring myself to have Sarge see me put on the uniform and leave him in a kennel while I went to work. But now he gets to live out his days with Tyler and be the dog Tyler always wanted him to be. He still has fight in him but I've never seen a smarter or more friendly dog who always knew what he was supposed to do." Aunt Deb says Sarge had no problem making the transition to spoiled rotten lap dog. "From running through airports to cuddling. It's great to have him home." Officer Bryce now works in Jarrell on patrol and manages their IT department. He is also in charge of professional standards and feels blessed to have chosen this career and more so to have had such a pawsome partner. (Note: That is the writer's bad pun, not Bryce's.)

means it’s time to start- thinking about what to get Mom for Mothers’ Day. But, for at least two ladies in Georgetown, every day is Mothers’ Day. Amy Woods, R.N. and Gabriela Peacock, R.N. are Labor & Delivery nurses at St. David’s Hospital in Georgetown. Plus, this year, they both happen to be pregnant so who better to talk to about the holiday than moms-to-be who help other moms become moms? Amy has been working at St David’s since 2014 when she got out of nursing school and says she loves every aspect of her job and has loved working in Georgetown from day one. “Being in a small hospital means that very often I can transition with my patients, from labor, through delivery and even in post-partum. It’s comforting for patients to have the same person follow them through the process and answer questions. We get to know them at least enough to anticipate what they might need at a particular time.” Woods has a 15-month old son at home already and says that having the clinical and medical background certainly helps with some of the anxiety of pregnancy and new motherhood. “I have a lot more confidence in my job, not so much because I’m a nurse—we are all professional in our jobs—but more so having gone through it myself. I know what to expect because I’ve done it and that 21
first hand knowledge also helps ease the worry some patients might have about procedure so they can focus on the emotional and enjoy the moment.” As a professional, she works every day to help moms feel appreciated and cared for and says she feels like her family appreciates her every day as well. “Everyone’s lives are busy but I am grateful for the recognition. It’s a special time at the hospital because we really do make it all about moms every day of the year.” Woods is due August 8 and is feeling healthy and well. “Even with all I know, there are always surprises but I know I had good care and we continue to provide good care. I just want to tell all the other moms out there to take care of yourselves and let people pamper you whenever they ask!” Gabi is having her first child and has been at St David’s since September. She says she always wanted to and has worked with kids her whole life. “I never had a job working with adults until I got into nursing and I really wanted to help kids and keep them from being scared at the hospital.” Her training did not include a pediatric rotation but, she says, when she went through her Labor & Delivery rotation, it changed everything. “I saw the impact that nurses
have on new moms and the instruction I got during that time made me fall in love with L&D. I also love that there can be a surgery component to it and I loved that challenge.” She loves having the ability to help women achieve goals for such a special time. “I had a patient recently who wanted to do a natural birth and we labored all night right along with her to make sure she had everything she needed to do it. I even stayed past my shift to see her deliver just as she’d planned it. We helped with that and it is a lasting memory. I’m so glad she was able to have it go the way she wanted.” Gabi also loves working in Georgetown at St. David’s and her daughter is due the day after Mothers’ Day so she is hoping perhaps to delivery just a bit early to celebrate. “I wasn’t always close with my mom but we are so much closer now that I’m pregnant and I appreciate her a lot more now. Seeing all these moms and all they do for their babies, it helps me understand and realize the appreciation that all moms are entitled to. It’s a whole new feeling of gratitude.” Gabi also wishes all moms a happy day and says, “Today is your day to not have to be Wonder Woman!” Happy Mothers’ Day to all moms, grandmoms, teachers, aunts, stepmoms and Wonder Women who love children, wherever you are.
