A Note From The Office of the Minister of Pastoral Counseling
MINISTER OF PASTORAL COUNSELING
presented by Dr. Carolyn Watson, Minister of Pastoral Counseling “I thought he loved me”. “He always said he would love me forever”. “I never thought he/she would hit me”. “I probably made him upset and mad”. “I never thought that my grandmother’s boyfriend would hurt her.” “That doesn’t seem right for granny.” “She/he threatened to leave me and take the kids; I was not about to let that happen”. This would have destroyed me and the person that I am. So, her/his death was not my fault”. “It’s her/his fault that the kids died that day, too”. “That was going to be the last time he/she would hit me- and it was”. These are just some of the statements that we hear from men and women who have been injured or succumbed to injuries from domestic and family violence. What is Domestic Violence? Domestic Violence refers to a pattern of abusive or coercive behaviors in any intimate or familial relationship, used to gain or maintain power and control over another person. The month of October has been recognized nationally as a month of special emphasis on domestic and family violence to bring more attention to this epidemic in our society. The month-long event is observed to mourn victims, celebrate survivors, raise awareness and unite communities to end domestic abuse.
The official theme for the 2026 National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is “With Survivors, Always” with emphasis on community and systemic action. Let’s look at some of the stats: In the United States: Three women are killed each day by a current or former partner. Parents who murder their partner and children are most often men. Although anyone can be a victim of domestic violence, women are disproportionally affected. More than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men in the U.S. experience contact sexual violence, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. The presence of a firearm in a domestic violence circumstance, increases the relative risk of homicide by 500%. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. The FBI reported more than 11,000 domestic violence murder victims across a five-year period (2020–2024), averaging roughly 2,290 deaths per year. In Arizona: Women and Men: Nearly half of Arizona women and a third of men experience some form of abuse or intimate partner violence (IPV). National Ranking: Arizona consistently places in the top tier nationwide (often ranked 4th or 5th) for overall rates of domestic violence and high rates of women murdered by men. Arizona averages approximately 100 to 105 domestic violence-related deaths each year, Impact on Children Witnessing Abuse: At least one child in Arizona witnesses domestic violence every 44 minutes. Exposure: Studies cited by local organizations note that children are eyewitnesses or present in the home for a vast majority of severe domestic incidents, raising risks for long-term emotional and behavioral challenges. Unhealthy Indicators Hitting you one time is too many; slapping you; throwing you against the wall, pushing you down, shoving you, saying derogatory things to you in private and in public, threatening to kill you, your pet and/or family members are just some of the indicators of an unhealthy mindset and unhealthy relationship.
What Actions Can You Take? Those who are in any relationship that has become violent, I ask you to take one step which is calling just one phone number to start the journey of your healing and your safety. (1-800-799-7233). Your health, wellness and safety are of utmost importance as it should be to each of us. Let’s keep those who have survived in our prayers. You can show support by engaging in the national Purple Thursday campaign, October 15, 2026. Wearing everyday items of purple to include purple ties, or other clothing, lapel pins, purple nail polish, purple hair color, purple wristbands, etc. Participate with us at FIBC on Purple Sunday, October 25, 2026. Church members did a fantastic job last year sporting purple in an array of clothing, hats and purple accessories. Purple represents courage and survival honoring the strength of victims and survivors. Wearing purple represents peace, dedication and hope showing a commitment to a future free from abuse. Stop by the display in the lower narthex where wristbands, lapel pins, informational brochures and other items will be available at no cost throughout the month of October. Remember the 3 R’s: Recognize: Spot the warning signs of abuse (physical harm, emotional control, isolation from family and/or friends). Respond: Talk privately and calmly with the person you believe may be experiencing harm. Refer: Connect the victim to local and national assistance contact information. Help is Available (Not an exhaustive listing). National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233 or text “START” to 88788. www.thehotline.org StrongHearts Native Helpline: 1-844-762-8483. Suicide Prevention Hotline: 988 Emergency: Call 911 if you are in immediate danger. www.hopewomenscenter.org www.https://turnanewleaf.org www.https://chrysalisaz.org
Let this year be the year where we continue a committed and renewed focus on supporting survivors in offering a heart space and physical space for renewal (Heal), a heart space where survivors experience caring (Hold) and ongoing counsel and support where we help to empower survivors (Center) as they reclaim hope and as we champion change on their behalf. As with our spiritual health, our emotional, mental, psychological and physical wellbeing are also very important to the Lord. (3rd John 2). For victims, their families, and survivors, let us strive to offer steadfast support through hearts devoted to prayer, sincere care, and dedicated action. May our support reflect genuine compassion and a continued commitment to standing with them as they seek renewal, healing, and hope. God bless you, Dr. Carolyn Watson Minister of Pastoral Counseling Psalm 34:18. The Lord is near the brokenhearted and those who are crushed in spirit.
