catching sound from above and sending it down below. As you walk below this space and are surrounded by sound, it almost seems as if you can touch these ancient relics, but you must continue your journey to the origination of the mesmerizing sound. Meanwhile, another set of smaller winding spaces seek the origin of

the sounds. These spaces are meant to be solitary and act more as a journey for an individual, seeking answers and approval. These spaces represent the incorporation of cross-dressing and the battle with ones-self, asking the question of “do I conform to societies standards or to be my own person?”. As the individual travels along this path, the spaces react to this internal dual and change in scale and organization to represent the unfolding of the mind and appreciation for oneself. I chose crossdressing and voodou because of their similarities to one another. Both ritual and tradition are a strange and unorthodox method of embracing oneself in societies eyes and the two are constantly scrutinized for their outlandish approaches to worship. Both spaces end in a grand space where freedom of religion, ritual, and tradition or openly celebrated by all individuals.

The Hospice, Celebrating the End
For the project between ground and sky, I were tasked with creating two programs that would engage our chosen sites, one in a hot, humid climate and one in a polar, cold climate. These spaces would address light, space, use, and ritual, while taking into consideration the environments in which these progrmas are set in. For my warmer climate, I chose a mountain top in Rio de Janeiro and the program is a hospice for the people living in the Videgal favelas

below the mountain. The hospice is separated into two zones, a space for the patient suspended in the sky and a space for the caretaker embed into the mountainside, symbolizing the patient’s final ties to the mortal world. The space above is constructed using a truss system that would then transfer to a cable system, suspending the patient’s room over the favela down below. patient via an elevator system that doubled as a small study space. The hospice is wrapped in a translucent facade (experimenting with perforated metals or ETFE) recreating a similar ethereal sensation from the clouds below the mountain. This effect in the interior of the space allows the space to change

The rainwater from seasonal storms would be collected in the overhead and drip into containers above the patient’s room and be turned into steam and would act as a second façade on warmer days.

As you navigate through the program you may experience compression, spatially, and your vision may become obscured at moments, you may also be forced in and out of somber and uncomfortable conditions throughout the itinerary. This layout is crucial since the design is meant to subconsciously help the patient heal throughout their time in the facility, reinforcing the idea
of “it gets better, in the dark, there will always be light, there will always be life”. During the winter months, the gardens are kept at a comfortable temperature by harvesting the geothermal energy from the volcanic landscape of
