Duration of Status (D/S) Changes What Current F-1 Students Need to Know

What is Duration of Status (D/S)?

D/S is the period of time an F-1 student is authorized to stay in the U.S. Under the current system, F-1 students have been admitted for “D/S” instead of a specific end date.

I-94 Arrival/Departure Record has shown “D/S” as the authorized period of admission.​

What is Changing?

D/S is being replaced with a specific end date: AUD (Admit Until Date)

Currently: • You can stay in the U.S. as long as you maintain F-1 status and have a valid I-20.

• No specific end date is listed on your I-94.

• ISP can extend your I-20.

As of September 15, 2026: •

You must depart the U.S. or file for an extension of stay (EOS) before the program end date on your I-20 or the AUD on your I-94.

ISP can no longer extend your I-20.

Other Important Changes 30-day grace period to depart the U.S. or transfer after program completion.

No changes to major or program of study during your first academic year.

No transfers to another school during the first academic year.

Must progress to a higher degree level. No second program in same or lower level.

For example:​ Associate Degree → Associate Degree ​ Bachelor’s Degree → Associate Degree ​ Associate Degree → Bachelor’s Degree ​ Bachelor’s Degree → Master’s Degree​

Extension of Stay (EOS) Meet with an Immigration Advisor.

Travel and Reenter with a new I-20 and valid visa.

Apply for an EOS through USCIS ​(U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) using Form I-539.

ISP can no longer extend your program end date.

U.S. Government makes the final decision on whether to extend your stay in the U.S.

What About Current Students?

Already in the U.S. under D/S (Duration of Status)?

There are no changes to your program or I-20.

You will not receive a new I-94 if you are in the U.S. before September 15.

Your I-20 program end date will be your AUD (Admit Until Date).

Check the program end date on your I-20.

Follow F-1 rules and regulations, maintain full-time enrollment.

Returning to the U.S. & Future Travel If you travel and re-enter the U.S. anytime after September 15, you will get a new I-94 with a fixed AUD date.

Current students in the U.S. or returning before September 15, your authorized stay is based on your I-20 end date.

The AUD date in most cases will be the I-20 program end date plus the 30 day grace period.

Always check your I-94 after entering the U.S. Report your I-94 AUD date to ISP.

Planning to Transfer to a 4-year University?

Plan ahead to ensure you can complete your degree/transfer requirements on time (by your I-20 program end date) Meet with an Academic Counselor to review your Ed Plan and to get support so you stay on track.

Meet with an Immigration Advisor early to discuss your timeline for transfer.

You will need to apply for an EOS or travel and re-enter with a valid visa.

What Should You Do Now? Continue to maintain your F-1 status.

Stay on track to complete your program on time.

Plan ahead before traveling internationally.

Meet with an academic counselor and immigration advisor for guidance.

Check your I-20 for program end date and I-94 for AUD date.
