After this great conflict. from which we haw· come vic­ torious. we arc ready to throw ounelves into anything which is for the hcst of al\..and \vhich will go to prevent another such Armag-eddon. 'l"he whole world is cndea\·oring to reach a la,1ting peace which will mete out Ju�tice to all: for as long as there i3 injustice there cannot he peace-such is the law of compensation. \,Vint is this thing ca1\ed Justice? ];.; it a worthless idea which has proved a failure?· >Jo! It came into being with the world and ha.s b�conH':, more ancl more, the rnling influ­ ence ever since. 1t is embodier\ in Christianitv and it is best expressed in the Golden Rule. All the worl,\ is 1110\·ing· for­ ward under its pressure: and the most civilized cotmtries oi the world-those who come the nearest to fulfilling Justice­ are at the helm. This ideal is ever present and its effects are seen in all things, small or great. It seems .at tirrn:s· that the worlc\ has lost all sense oi this ideal but there is always retri­ bution. lt i� never absent but it sometimes lacks defenders to hold up its standards. The American nation is founded on the principles of Justice for -all-and therefore we should t'On­ sider this great ideal as part of our patriotism and common endeavor. Our responsibilities of the present call for Justice as does 011r fut.ire. The labor problem, the greatest problem of our age, calls for a strict application of this ideal-and it will receive it. The more this principle of Justice is taught, the easier will be the solution of this problem. The call oi the l'uture is for !\'Ten of Justice, and we must answer the call!

For this reason it has been deemed fitting that we dedi­ cate this El Espiritu de 1919 to these ideals of Justice, Peace and Right and lo one who ga\·e his all that they might be presen·ed.

The Student Body of Claremont High School has this year faced difficulties never dreamed of in former times. The greatest. perhaps. was the lack of tmity and school spirit. due to the several interruptions. \Ye have had to omit several of our most cherished activities. such as clehating, a certain amount of athletics, and even some class insignia. These might not be so important, were it not for the fact that every other activity was either hurriedly pushed through. or interfered with, the result being that the school enthusiasm was par­ tially, dampened.

But nevertheless, the icw activities we have undertaken, have on the whole been most whole-heartedly entered into by a large number of our members. \,Vhen we look back over the records of our actions for the Red Cross, we have nothing to he ashamed of. The work: \vith dramatics. what there was of it, was considered by many to be the best in our history.

The participants in the athletics showed a strong determina­ tion to make good. All the activities, in short, while perhaps hampered, have nevertheless been of sterling quality, and the persons who have taken leading parts in the affairs deserve the hearty thanks of the entire school. .· It is to be hoped that next year our work will be entirely uninterrupted, and that w,t>, can say without a twinge of con­ science that Claremont High School has in every respect been through the most successful and honorable year of its exist­ ence. The appearance of the Clare­ mont High School News and Views in March, 1916, was the first start towards the building up of a school paper. The next year the office of Editor of the Xews and Views was added to the list of officers elected at the end of th€ year. The Editorship was incorporated in the Executive Committee, and the office was placed in the constitution which put the News and Vie\VS on a permanent basis.

We had hoped that the News and Views could expand this year but for several reasons this was impossible: the space in the Claremont Courier was limited to a certain extent; and on account of the influenza and the added work after returning to school it was necessary that some of the entertainments and activities be omitted this year. Since the school was doing much more than the usual work, time was Scarce

and it was necessary to put in only the essentials.

In the coming years, however, we hope through the co-operation of Mr. Bell, that this department may be enlarged upon and pos­ sibly in future years the High School may edit a paper of its own, similar to "The Student Life" of Pomona College, where all matter of school interest may be brought before the students and public. The aim of th'.s year's Editors is to make more firm the foundations for a schoo! pa_ner in the future.

As Editor of the News and Views T wish to thank the former editors of the News and Views for their valuable assistance and Miss Lockwood who has devoted a part of her time each week to the paper. Bates i\Iilitary training has at last been established on a firm basis in C. H. S., thanks in part to the efficient instruction of Lt. Russell Adams, our commandant. The boys, by thl!ir enthusiastic assim­ ilation of the fundamentals of military order and dril1 also have done much toward making the Company the well trained organiza­ tion that it has become.

An attempt was made last year to form a unit of this sort, nnd although the company drilletl only a semester, a very good preparation was made for this year's corps, Three-fifths of the company this year was made up of boys who had had al lenst this half-year's training and the result was very ap1>arcnt in their work.

For the first two months we were without an i11structor other than the officers chosen by the members of ihe company from their number but at last the services of Lt. Adams, a graduate of the Oflicers' Training School at the Presidio, were secured and the work progressed rapidly and efficiently under his charge. We arc very fortunate in having such a capable director as Lt. Adams, for under his instruction the corps may become efficient enough to be eli1d , ble to membership in the California Hijlh School Cadet Corps. This would entitle us to uniforms and guns, which would be an inspira­ tion toward a soldierly sense of duty and responsibility, by which great things could be accomplished, not only in our military affairs but also in our every day conduct in life.

Although in the eyes of some, the speed and daring with which we have taken up projects. may ha,·e made us ap­ pear "plungers:· yet we haYe the assurance oi knowing that we have for the most part, ;'Carried On:· Three of om boys entered the sen-ice of our country. One of them will not come back. But he will always stand in our memory. as our share in the cause of humanity. \\'e all feel that no loss cmlid have made itself felt more keenly. \Ve have seHral things to regret concerning our high school career. \\·e ha,·c not alway·s been thoughtful of those about us who were doing so much for u::-. \Ve have not always been careful of our example. .-\s Freshmen and Sophomores. it ne,·er occurred to us that we were an example, that anyone looked up to us. \\'e have not always realized our responsi­ bility: The one thing. howe,·er. which we regret the most is that we are leaving high school. lea,·ing behind the best period of Ollf lives. and that at preseht we arc unable to prove, dircc-tly, the depth of gratitude. which we feel we owe to Claremont High School.

Forest. and I huddled closer to the flickering blaze in the fire­ place. \\'c had been staring into the flames and thinking and talking and dreaming and seemed almost to be in a world of thoughts rather than in one oi realities. :\ly friend remarked on this phase of life and wondered. as he said, how much of one's own world is real and how much is created for one's own self by his imagination. \\"c had been talking of people we had known pre,·ious to this remark, and we resumed our corn·crsation along that line. but for some inexplicable reason ,the trend of our thought now took a rather dreary t1m1. in tl111C perhap:-, with the howling wind and beating- rain. Then suddenly Forest straightened up and said in an intense voice. "I must tell someone. yes. I will tell vo11, about the hest friend and the most hrilliant man I ha,·c c;.cr known ·· This story has since so grasped my imagination that I too. tell it. It is true. and the qncstions that it raises and partly answers have imheddcd themselves in the Yery tissues oi my brain. l will repeat it as nearly as l can in the way it was related to me on that stormy night long ago ;.I was first introduced- to this man.·· my friend began, .. we will call him Donilc.-when I came as a Freshman to the unin.'rsity. Because of some strange whim. he took a fancy to me. crude and insignificant tho r was. and aiter a short ac­ quaintance we arranged to room together. r\nd as for my rc­ ganl for him and his ability. it amOlmtcd pra,cti-cally to wor­ ship. ".-\!tho only twenty-three. yet he was taking a graduate course in this large Eastern uninrsity and upon its completion had the assurance of a position in his own college. He was now engaged in experimental scientific work. At times he would work 1111ceasi11�\v for days at a stretch. \vhollv absorbed in his lahors . .--\t otli"cr'.o;, tho. hC was moody. whol\-'� incapable oi work, would sometimes take long walks or fall into un­ broken silence gazing abstractedly out of the window or at the opposite wall. Sometimes a smile woul<I light up his deep set brown eyes or possibly a frown would traYerse his long, keen, thin face. l le was indeed the 1110!-il able and promising young man I ha\·e ever seen .. So �lose did our e\·cr-growing friendship become that l was the first and as iar as 1 am able to judge the only one to whom he told his great loYe. One afternoon �vhen the snow was :silently ialling and the windows were being whit­ ened by it. he told me in a far-away manner, of his great love.

oi the young woman whom since childhood days, he had adored and admired and whom he now loved with his whole heart. ··T was rather surprised at Donilc's professions of love for as I had known him he seemed to shun women and be ex­ tremely ill at case in their presence. He went on to picture her beauty anti her character with such cnthusia:-.m and depth of insight as belongs only to the finest literature of love. ··Often during the following weeks dirl my friend speak to me of his affection and of the deep passion that had been growing on him all his life. Her name was Elizabeth .\lc­ l(cnzic and the .\lcl.:::enzie family had come to town a !--hart time after his own familv :-.ettlCd th<:rc and had moved di­ rectly into the large brick house acro�s the street from his own. l:oth .\Ir. and .\!rs. ::\lcl(cnzie had died while their two daughters Elizabeth and .\larian were still in their teens. hut hac\ willed their extensi\·e property to the girk Elizabeth and ::\larian were charming and culti,·atcd young- ladies and were ingenious and affe-ctionate in spite oi their g-reat wealth.

Isn't it too good to be true. yes. too good to he trne ?' ·· Dnring the remainder of the y�ar, he spoke often of P.lizaheth and of the wonderful 1<:tters he recei,·ed from her. which by the way. A most brilliant and attracli\·e iuture was alrea,h- as�ured to this gifted student. this man who towered head and shoulders, intellectually. aboYe any student in the university. ··One night when I returned to our room. I found him with his head bowed on the table in the ckpths of mental agony. He brokenly told me that E!izab"eth was sick. Tt was with a strange sense of ion·bocling that l pushed' open the door and turned on the -lights. There was Donile lying face down on the heel I-le did not reply when I spoke to him. and whe11 I rushed to the bedside and was frantically working o,·cr him he did not move or even breathe. Donile. my friend and chum. was dead and beside him on the table was a cup containing a iew drops of what later was found to be prussic acid. ,;The next week after the coroner's inquest. I ,\·as travel­ ling to Donilc·s home. I felt it m�· dnty. as l had kno\\'n him hest at the uninrsity. to extend \\'hat little of sympathr and comfort J could to his parents. and to lighten the grief, if in anyw:i.y, l was able. of J\!iss· i\!'arian ]vlcKenzie. I arrived in the town at night and was dri\·cn to Donile's home. I was there met by the dignified but crushed father and by the grief­ stricken mothl'r. They conducted me into their sitting room, and. when I had told them my name and why I had come, began immediately to question me concerning the circum• stances of their son's tragic death. I replied, ·of course you know of Donile's del'p affection for the late J\riss Elizabeth McKenzie. of whom he has often spoken to me in the most admiring- manner." and described the larg-e brick house di­ rectly across the :street in \\'hich Elizabeth and her sister :\lar­ ian lin:d. He could visualize the happenings of that nc,·cr-to-he-forgot­ tcn day as if it all were yesterday. instt"ad of years ago.

1-1 is part in the great war had all been so short. One or two weeks in the trenches during heavy fighting, then "over the top," and then back to a hospital. Before he could re­ cover, the armistice was signed. And those memorable one or two weeks had been right on that spot. f."rom where he :--tood he could see across the space that had been ··.\o :\lan·s Land," to the place where the German trenches had hceu­ that early morning so long ago. when he and his pal had gi,•cn each other messages to their lon.·d ones in case one shonlcl fall. and the other be niore fortunate . .\lartin remem­ bered so well those last tense moments before they went ··over the top ·· He had g-onc hack-the other had not. He had returned to .--\merica, had been the one to hear the other·s messages to the loYed ones. who had heard nothing sa,·c ··.\[is.sing in _.--\ction ·· .\lartin could tell them nothing more, but he knew that his pal had been killed. Had he not seen him fall at his side. had he not seen the ghastly wound and turned away. sick with horror, on]�- to find himself separated from the boy with the tide of hattle? ! le felt no doubt as to his iate Dut he had never ceased to wonder why he had hct:n listed as missing He rememborecl the hor �o well. The boy·s family. how bra\'ely t.)1ey had taken it� They were proud people, wealthy: they had ielt his loss deeply. but they had gi,·en him bra,·e!y. It was years ago. :\fartin had not iorgotten: he had lost track of the hoy's people.

Perhaps they had forgottCll-they were so proud, so haughty. yet so loving to their only son Perhaps 't\\'as better that he had not lived. He might ha\·c brought disg-race upon them in a hnndred ways. I le might ha\"C married helow him: he might ha\"C speculated too high and-well. his people conld not ha\'(' reconciled themsch-es to anything like that! .-\ncl ·,·ct his death was terrible!

Thus pondering. the gray-haired American wandered on into the tiny f.'rench \'illage. He \\"ished to st.i.y in its rest and quiet for a few days. before retracing his steps to the world oi business. lt had been a great 111omc:11t in his life­ the week or two of the great \Var he had spent near there.

1\fayhe there is -�omeone in the Yillage with whom you could stay." The inn-keeper turned to one or two old men. ··Pei-haps Pierre would take him in: he has need of the American·s Oh. that France could ever forg-et the hra,·ery oi one son:;. as she has forgotten his!'' ··You fof":set, Pierre is not of France.'' ;,But l sa�- he and shall ah'vavs say so. 1-:las he not the coloring· o·i a Frenchman? f\h, lhat Shell-shock! Could Pierre lmt tell his part! But he is French. ] kno,v it! :Kone b11t a nati,·e could thus speak the language."'

"Do not continue this fruitless argument. Jacques, you show the .--\merican to the home of Pierre, and seek lodging for him."

So the American went witf1 Jacques to the home of Pierre. :\nd they c01l\"erscd of the war, so long ago, but which they could not Ah, ym1 brave Americans! ··Yo11 fought near France \\"ill never forg;�t. .--\nd they saw fJ ierre, a large man. somewhat stooped.

TTe consenter\ happily to taking in the American. and called his wife to welcome the man. She came, a woman snperbly built. of the fine type.

That e,·ening, retiring, the great question came up again. ;,:'IIy Pierre. she said. "can tell you of German prison camps: of his trench fife he can tell you nothing. The shell-shock was the 1 belie,·e, oi all. He merely lost his remembrance of what before. He is a strong, healthy man now.''

And Pierre told of the prison French, and as he told. his black-eyed gathered about him. The American watched and listened and was enfranced with his tale. and saw-the strange tip-tilt to his left eye­ brow.

The next morning :'l'lartin left. After he had gone. a little black-eyed youngster ran to-Pierre with a package. The package contained money, a Yery great deal. A small note read ··America does not forget." ··\Vhat did he mean?" ques­ tioned Pierre. "j do not know."

A great problem. in­ The American went on his reflected on his thoughts deed. Yet. he reasoned with upon the trite saying, oi the n10rni11g and finally fell ·· Let sleeping dogs lie.'"

Lee, an American missionary, encleavorecl to the trend of the article. The Chinese lesson was in progress. and the reading oi the daily Chinese newspaper constituted a set part of it.

1\fr. Lee was uncloubtetlly puzzled. The article lVfr. Chang was reading. which was one of a series.told minute detail. hO\\" the natives of the Philippine Islands. were cruelly mistreated by the invading army of an outside coun­ try, and subjected to unspeakable tortures which they were powerless to resist. The article concluclecl with the question, ;.\,\'ould you care to be treated in a similar manner, by these same people? Resist them now!''

In talking it over with �Ir. Chang, both were conYincecl that these articles were a direct at .-\merica, and 1Ir. Lee knew that ii they were ·read to any great extent by the poorer, uneducated class of Chinese, who hclie\·e every­ thing they arc told, trouble was bound to result.

Immediate action was necessary! �[r. Lee telegraphed to the nearest American consul and later. sent both the pa­ . pers and the translations on to him, day by clay. The consul's answer instructed �fr. Lee to sec the \'.clitor of the paper and discover his motiYe for publishing the·· articles, and to report any new cle\·elopments of the case, l\fr. Lee called on the editor, and found a �olitarY man at the office. A few of the clay·s papers were lying- on a table, inviting inspection. _--\ numb'er of scrolls hung, old and dusty, on the walls, bearing time worn insniptions to any who would pause and look. On the left. a set of fancy-can-cd, straight­ backed chairs. with little tables for sen·ing tea separating them, stood. more for looks than for comfort. This man, who was seated at his desk, rose as �fr. Lee entered, and motioned him to one of these scats. Then :.'Ir. Lee asked, .. fs the editor in?.. The man answered... J b"long editor."

Having seemed his man, �fr. Lee said, taking np an issue of the paper, "\\/hat do yon mean by endangering the lives and property oi American citizens, by publishing such trash in your newspaper?" The editor understood the tone, but not the words. ··J no savvy Engleesh. I b"long editor." l\Ir. Lee Page Forty-five

then transferred to Chinese, explai,�in"g how injurious the articles were to the Americans. On being cornered by we.11directed questions. the editor sullenly admitted the publica­ tion of the articles. and said. ·· 1 got them from a book which was sent to me irom Tokio. I printed them in order to fur­ nish a little "hou wan" or i:oocl fun, for mv subscrihers. Of course they will not do any harm." But ncvCrthcless. he stout­ ly withheld the names oi any people i1wolved. Goaded to desperation by further questions the editor grew defiant, but he was warned against printing the series an�· further. The man. seeking to rid him:-elf of a troublesome Yisitor. told some polite lies. but refused to present or surrender the hook. and the articll's continued to appear in daily succession.

However. the case soon got to0 big for :\Ir. Lee to handle alone. One day, a ship came into the harbor. with white sides. a yellow funnel and masts. and flying- the American flag. It was the L. S.S._ \.i\lalobos. The Captain. a fine, tri111looking- L". S. nan' offic'cr. came to see :\Ir. Lee after the ar­ ri,·al �f- the ship a;1Cl said. "':\Ir. Lee. I ha\'C been sent np here bv the American consul at 1-lankow. with the instructions to rC'port immediately to you. sir. \\"hat do you think ought to done?'' �·eedlcs� to say. this introduction had a surprising effect on :\fr. Lee. After gi,·ing a detailed report to the Captain. they w(·nt and inten·iewed the editor. who although decidedlv frightened. wa!- still Yery insolent. and would not� present th·e hook. The Japanese had brihcrl this editor to keep still. How­ e,·cr, ,,·ith the help oi :\Ir. I.cc\; translation. the Captain said to the Chinese editor, ·· J will giYe yon twenty-four hon rs or until ,:.; :30 p. m. tomorrow afternoon to bring the original copy oi that hook to me. ahoard ship. Tf it is not in my hands by that time. I will proceed to shell the town."'

The affair had now �rown to such great proportions that the whole city. the capital of the prO\·ince, was i1n-oh·ed. A meeting of the town council, which controls local affairs. was ha:-.tily called and the matter discu:,;sed. They di<l not wish to lo::-e the g-ood iricndship of the .--\mcricans. nor di(\ they relish the prospect of incurring the further enmity of Japan.

The Japanese had threatened the editor and all concerned with indescribable disgrace ii they released the book. and on the other hand. ii it were not produced. the ,--\merican gun­ boat would begin firing at once. They were in a very serious dilemma. The next day. they asked for an extension of time. and the Captain under the direction of :\lr. Lee. granted 15 minutes. A steam launch was waiting at the landing and before the fifteen minutes were up. a very red-faced. puffing an<l blowing member of the town council. rode out to the ship with the hook. ··.\"ow," tlnrndere<i the Captain, ';this af­ Pagc Forty-six 0

fair has g·onc far enough. Ti there is any more complaint again�t that editor. I �hall per�ona\ly sec that his ju!-it punish­ ment is carried out to the letter. I shall keep thi� book. and turn it over to the American con�nl at llankow ... l lowe,·er. this man pleaded so earnestly that the book be returned to him, to save him from the n-ngeance oi the Japanese. that the Captain rclcascc\ it, after gaining sufficient data to make a report to the American consul at Hankow.

The next day. the Captain called on the Go\'Crnor of the pro,·ince and. as a result. the nc\\'spaper was suppressed for ten days, after which it was opened with profnse apolog-ics to the Americans. These continued for three weeks c0t-respond­ ing to the length oi time that the Japanese articles were pub­ fo;hed. The Captain. also demanded a sincere ,·crhal apology from the editor. anti before a meeting of the city conn-cil. and se\·eral influential Arnl'rican missionarie�. a yery white-faced, meek little editor mnrmnred a nice apology which the Cap­ tain was pleast.:d to accept.

Very shortly afterwards. an .--\merican consulate was es­ tablished in this town. and ::\Ir. Lee and his iamih'. felt a 1hrill oi patriotism on beholding- the Stars and StripCs flying iree in the wind abo\·e the American consulate, �tanrling- as always. for tht.: liberty and protection of e\·ery American ·cit­ izen. whether at home or abroad. Gardner (better known as Rhoecu:--) gave 11s a pleas­ ant surprise hy taking second in the hali mile.

The iollo\\"ing Saturday 1he \"alley Lcag-11e :\lect was held at Puente. \\"e expected a hard fig-ht from La Verne College and we were not disappointed! In fact. we got a little more than we barg-aincd for. Dag-g:-. again won his fifteen points, but some of the men that we expected to place did not clo so. l-lowenr. we did better in this meet than iu the one the week beiorc as we did not hanc- Citru:-. and Al­ hambra to compete with. \\'e.made a hard try for the relay cup. bur were unable to win it, as the La Verne runner had too much oi a lead on Daggs. :\nyonc who missed seci11g Daggs crawl up on J. Crooh in that last lap of the relay, certainly missed the sig-ht of hi:-- life.

After our track season was O\·er Dag-gs continued his training and entered the All-Southern .\leet. held at L. A. l�ligh School on April 19. 1-1<: won ·both the high and !ow lrnrdles. tying tht: Interscholastic record in hath. I !c tied with \Vright oi Lincoln High for indi\·ichrnl honors. ! li:-­ tcn points g;a\·e Claremont fifth in the meet i11 which there were 28 schools represented! As this g-oes to press Dag-g-s is planning to repres<.:nt Claremont in the State :'llect to he held at San Dernarclino I! i�·h School. The outlook for t�ack next year is excellent hut every­ one must g-et behind track and help the team make it a �11c­ ce!-s. \\"c lose Daggs this year and it \\"ill he very diffiClllt to fill his place but it 11111st and can he clone if we all work for Claremont I lig-h School!. :-.J. e.-Daggs won both hurdles in the State :\leet at San Bernardino.

1 n the morning, the entire school and many of the 1918 graduates assembled ahout the tlag pole and the progra111 was opened hy the singing oi ··.-\mcrica.'' :\Ir. Palmer spoke of the fla� whirh was prc;;cntcd to the school b,· the cla;;s of 1918. and introduced l rcsidcnt James A. 11!.-iisdcll of Pomona Colh:gc. who g-a\·c a ,·cry in­ teresting address.

Dr. ·P,laisdcll spoke of his pride in Clarc11101it ) ligh School. and the fact that he lo,·ecl to point it our to \'i :- itors of the town and that its hca11ty was rare. Adding- to its beauty, he said. was the fact that thirty men ha\·c g-one from the 11 igh School.

At the close of the address the scn·icc fla.� was rai ... cd with thirty stars on it and the imprcssi\'e program was end· cd by the singing of the Star Spangled Hanner.
