It has been a privilege to cooperate with you in such accomplishments. May each suc­ ce:;sive year find you more courageous and determined and better trained in fundamen­ tal learning. If this country and world are to progress, more vigorous people with super­ ·or oreparation are needed. Each one of you shou d be developed as completely as pos­ sible. Be not discouraged because of weak­ ness and failures. On the contrary, resolve with each successive day to make some gain.

Executive Board

STUDENT COUNCIL

The Senior Council is composed of the members of the Executive Board, the editor of the Wolf Packet, the class presidents and class representatives. Its purpose is to offer the students a share in the discussion of problems important to all. This year the Council has been very active. A Red Cross drive was sponsored. A student body party was given to interest both th� Junior and senior High Schools. With the help of an advisory committee a motion picture ma­ chine was selected and its purchase will en­ able the school to show good motion pic­ tures with the advantage of owning the pro­ jector. The Council sincerely hopes for con­ tinued cooperation from the Student Body.

-he Junior High School Student Council i":!s ended another successful year. Com­ =csed of the officers of the Junior High :::-oo, Student Body, the presidents of the se. enth, eighth, and ninth grades respect­ ive y and an elected representative from :ocn class of the Junior High School, the c:oyncil has met twice a month. Besides - e d·scussion of the immediate problems of --e school, the council has engaged in char·-cb e activities. The Red Cross drive was s_ccessfully sponsored in the Junior High, a-o Thanksgiving and Christmas boxes were :· ed for those less fortunate than ourselves.

Girls'

League

This year tho Girls' Leugue has been hap­ py and busy sponsoring many activities. We began with the annual banquet at the end of the football season. An informal dance, and the Valentine formal proved very popu­ lar. Other parties, several cake sales, and a pay assembly provided money for Christmas lights for one of our high school trees, and for a bed in the Casa Colina Home for Crip­ pled Children. We plan that the league shall not only pay for this bed but shall also be­ friend the children who occupy it through the years. In March the girls gave a Variety Show in place of their annual play. The pur­ pose was, in addition to furnishing entertain­ ment, to interest every girl, and to show how much hitherto hidden talent the school pos­ sessed. Our delegates attended the fall con­ ference held at Pasadena, and the League was again well represented in the spring at Pomona. This year has been worth while, and we hope that the Girls' League will always have support in carrying on the project we have undertaken this year.

Our Junior year has been filled with many pleasant events. Early in lhe fall the tradi­ tional competition between the Juniors and Seniors began with flags, dummies, and the class numerals, which appeared in various conspicuous places. The rivalry finally term­ inated with the springing of the Junior sweaters, which were blue and white with ap­ propriate emblems. The Juniors have been v,idely represented in the school activities and in student body offices. Some have shown their ability in the field of sports and in dramatic presentations, especially in the operetta, "Miss Cherry Blossom" and in "Big Hearted Herbert".

During the first semester a class dance was held to which the entire school was in­ vited. The second semester brought forth the annual Junior Play. As a finale to the year's events we were host to the members of the graduating class. Forgetting all past controversies, we enjoyed together the last and most important social event of the school year, the Junior-Senior Reception.We realize that we shall miss the class of 1937 with which we have been so closely associat­ ed, and we hope that during the coming year we may prove ourselves capable of fill­ ing the position that has become ours through graduation.

Juniors

We have been told that we entered Claremont High School a bunch of scared, noisy seventh graders, tremendously im­ pressed with our own importance. Now as full-fledged high school students we have survived our first year. We have participat­ ed in various activities. Modesty forbids our telling what a really remarkable class we are.

We do not feel that we have exhausted the knowledge of our teachers, so we look for­ ward to two years more of happy and prof­ itable experience.

The year has been most pleasant for the class of 1940. The first party was a dance, given Decem_ber I I th, in the Girls' gymnas­ ium. [3eside dancing there were games.

Many of the boys have won recognition in athletics. The girls too have distinguished themselves in G.A.A. sports, especially in the Basketball Play Day when the Freshmen won their games 16 to 15. A day at the Beach in the spring and Junior High School Commencement closed our activities.

The Wolf Packet is published to increase

the interest of the students in all of the school activities.

Appearing bi-weekly throughout the year it has b�en issued in the form of a small magazine. Both the Junior

and Senior High School have been represent­ ed, the Junior High having its own page ot

news of special interest to the younger stu­ dents. The sports page was probably the most important, carrying as it did write-ups of both the boys' and the girls' sports. It is hoped that the student body will continue to support the Wolf Packet and to make fu­ ture issues of the paper even more valuable.

This year for the first time a dramatics club was formed by those aspiring to work at directing, applying make-up, or produc­ ing. Meetings were held every two-weeks under student leadership when articles per­ taining to some phase of dramatic work were read. At some of the meetings plays were presented. In March a play called "A Hint to Brides" was given in assembly for the entire high school. Because of the inter­ est taken in the organization it is very cer­ tain that it will have a future. A second year should see some real talent developed and more advanced activities undertaken.

Club

The French Club, one of the newly organ­ ized activities, met under the direction of Miss Escudero at the homes of members.

The membership consisted of most of the students of the French classes of the schocl.

The usual club meeting consisted mainly of a period during which only French could be used and a fine was assessed for the use o F English at this time. In March a large repre­ sentation attended the French play REtvil at the Raymond Theatre in Pasadena. With the Spanish Club they also saw an exceilent pro­ duction at the Little Theatre in Padua Hills.

Under the leadership of Miss Escudero the Spanish Club has enjoyed a very suc­ cessful year. Membership was drawn from the first and second year Spanish classes and meetings were held in the homes of the members. During the first part of the eve­ ning only Spanish was to be spoken, and ofenders forfeited a penny. The adviser intro­ duced topics of conversation and proposed he Spanish games. The Club held two joint eetings with the French Club, a Spanish and French dinner, and a visit to Padua Hills.

Spanish Club

Organized in 1929 Scribblers is the oldest club in the school. Its purpose is to encour­ age creative writing, and election to mem­ bership is on the basis of original work. Abil­ ity to express one's ideas thus becomes the single requirement. Scribblers meets every two weeks at the homes of members. Con­ tributions submitted anonymously are read aloud, and discussed. The criticism thus of­ fered frequently proves very helpful in later literary work. Much of the charm of this club lies in ii-s informality. There are but two of­ ficers. No constitution for the organization was ever written, and there are but few rules.

This year there has been an increased in­ terest in Scribblers and it has the largest membership in its history. It is quite possible that we may someday hear from the mem­ bers of Scribblers 193 7.

In Claremont High School an incentive to intensive study and educational achieve­ ment is found in the California Scholarship Federation of which our organization is Chapter 81. Membership in the society is achieved by grade points, and if maintained four semesters, one of which is in the senior year, confers· life membership and the privil­ ege of receiving the gold seal on the diploma. This year we were allowed one full day in which to visit the various courts in the Los Angeles city hall, and to attend the mo­ tion picture "The Good Earth" at the Car­ thay Circle Theatre. On April 2nd represen­ tatives went to the Annual Regional Confer­ ence at Canoga Park High School. The C.S. F. is a worthwhile organization and Clare­ mont High School should place more mem­ bers than there are at present.

Scholarship Society

This year's Lettermen's Club, although losing over half its enrollment through grad­ uation the previous June, continued the large membership as many new varsity ath­ letes joined the ranks. Under the capable leadership of its officers and the adviser, Mr. Martin, the club has continued to up­ hold the ideals adopted at its founding seven years ago. Four members are eligible for the life passes. Gurton Blanchard is the one member receiving a three year honor sweater. The success of last year's carnival inspirnd the production of a similar enter­ tainment this year. New members suffered the throes of initiation at the annual beach party hold in the spring as a conclusion to the club's activities.

The Girls' Athletic Association since its beginning has been an organization to pro­ mote the physical welfare and encourage better sportsmanship among the girls of the High School. All major sports, Basketball, Hockey, Speedball, Baseball, and Tennis have their individual Tri-County Play Day which is held at various schools in the League. Making any one team nets a hun­ dred points. When a girl obtains a total of five hundred points she receives her letter, and for one thousand points her G.A.A. Pin. In the play days at Chino, Citrus, and Clare­ rnont the girls were very successful, the Freshmen and Sophomore teams winning most of their games. The membership of the G.A.A. is growing every year due to the cooperation of the girls and the help and guidance of our adviser, Mrs. Schafer.

Stage Crew

In spite of the fact that the stage was not available for several months at the begin­ ning of the term, because of the reinforce­ ment construction work in the auditorium, many stage productions have been success­ fully presented during the year. The Student l3ody three-act play, "Big Hearted Herb­ ert", the operetta "Miss Cherry Blossom", and the orchestra program, "Italian Holi­ day" were the principal performances, while others of interest were the Minstrel Show, the Junior and Senior plays, and the Dram­ atics Club play. The crew has played an im­ portant part in these productions, construct­ ing Japanese tea houses and bridges, plant­ ing cherry trees and wisteria, as well as do­ ing the routine work of managing lights, moving flats, and operating curtains. A fine new set of flats has been added to the stage equipment.

The Radio Club was organized in the sch_ool year of 1935-36, with only four mem­ bers, whose time was spent on one joint pro­ ject in construction. This year only two of the original four members remained, so the

club membership was opened to all students who were interested. About twepty-five re­ sponded. An elimination test was given to

determine those genuinely interested and

the first semester was spent on instruction in simple radio theory. In the second semes­ ter meetings were devoted largely to carry­ ing out such individual projects as building

crystal sets, constructing more complicated battery receiving sets, or the small AC sets which were of special interest.

Although Claremont High School has no glee clubs this year it has a very active and interested Chorus Club. It is organized from the girls of theiJunior and Senior High School and the meetings are held in the regularly scheduled club periods. A study of famous operas is being made, beginning with Car­ men by popular choice. The better known numbers from_ each opera are presented on recordings, and the members learn to iden­ tify these as well as to enjoy the music. A successful project of the year, carried out for the purpose of securing funds, was that of conducting a Valentine post office, and the school was afforded much amusement by those participating in the venture.

The Junior High Orchestra of 1936-37 is larger than usual, having forty-five mem­ bers. The instrumentation is very well bal­ anced. They played for the Christmas Pro­ gram, and presented a pantomime prologue and played two numbers for the Orchestra Entertainment. Two of the best players had the privilege of playing with the Senior Or­ chestra on the overture for the Operetta.

The Vesper Service, the next program in which they appeared, was followed by the Junior High School Commencement Exer­ cises. Mrs. Minnie Howe is the director.

Junior Orchestra

Under the able direction of Miss Sybil Baker, this year's Advanced Chorus, com­ posed of Senior High School Students, has sung its way to success. Its first public ap­ pearance was in the Minstrel Show, Decem­ ber 17, where it won the favor of an appre­ ciative audience. Early in April, the annual operetta took the spotlight. The production chosen was "Miss Cherry Blossom'', which was acclaimed a decided success. The chorus again gained favorable attentionlby present­ ing a Vesper Service, in conjunction with the orchestra. It has been a successful year, and thoroughly enjoyed by both the chorus and its audiences.

Kiwanis Cup Award The Kiwanis Cup Award is made annually to the Claremont High School boy who has been voted by his classmates the most outstanding in character, leadership, scholarship, and sportsmanship in the graduat­ ing class. In 1936, the seventh year of the award, an unprecedented choice was made in the selection of two boys in place of the usual one.

Robert Nicholl and Champ Thompson, were adjudged equally outstand­ ing and shared the coveted honor. Robert was the winner of varsity let­ ters in five different sports, participated in dramatics, was selected for two years as a member of the Huntington Beach Basketball Tournament All-Star Tearn, and placed second in the California State track meet in the 440, and sixth in the broadjump. Champ was the winner of varsity letters in four different sports, played football for four years, and was captain in his senior year. He was also active in dramatics, served as president of the Lettermen's Club, and was selected on the mythical Tri­ County All-Star football team for two years as a lineman. Such out­ standing records speak for themselves. Both boys deserved the honor.

CAPTAIN JACK MOBLEY End "A determined leader"

Varsity Football Though this year's football team was not comparable in playing ability to last year's championship team, it is to be rated as having com­ pleted a highly successful season. An inexperienced squad took the field, but under the able tutelage of Coach Lyle C. Martin, and with Ja�k Mobley as captain, showed steady improvement. It is not the score board record that shows this team a success, but rather the individual achieve­ ment. As a team they lost, and still made the best of it and enioyed the game. Since in life we must learn to lose with a smile, pick ourselves up, and begin all over again, the team, in learning that, accomplished some­ thing definitely worthwhile. One score book record does stand out re­ markably. In the five league games played, Claremont received only six penalties, as contrasted with sixteen penalties against their opponents.

This is a record rarely paralleled by any team, and one well worth cher­ ishing.

Varsity Baseball Eighteen players reported for baseball this year on the Claremont diamond. The first practice game, with Voorhis, was won by Claremont with seven runs to our credit, while our opponents trailed with four. The next game was played with Avalon High School on the famous Chicago Cubs' training diamond at Catalina. In spite of a disappointing score the team enjoyed the trip to the island on the last day of the Spring Vacation.

In the game with California Preparatory School Claremont seemed to hit her stride, but the Corona and Downey games were discouraging. The faultless pitching of Ayala of Chino with Claremont's handicap as a re­ sult of injuries and ineligibilities proved a bad combination. Bonita, too, was a formidable opponent. The Puente, Colton and Citrus games remain to be played. It is hoped that Claremont may recover her pre-season form for these last encounters.

Junior High Baseball The Junior High Baseball team has turned in a most commendable record thus far this season. If they continue their current championship drive, they should bring home the pennant for Claremont this year. They have succeeded in v1inning every league game. In so doing they have m::ido a total of ninety-four runs to their opponents twenty. They have a batting average as a team of .442. Aside from the league games listed, Claremont defeated Palomares 3 to 4 on one occasion and 5 to 7 in a second encoun­ ter. They tied LaVerne 8 to 8, and came back to defeat San Dimas 6 to I. As we go to press there are three more games to be played. If they finish the season without casualties and with continued effort, success is as­ sured. The record made by this aggregation as Junior High School ath­ letes promises much for future teams in the upper division.

Varsity Tennis Tennis prospects for this year seemed dark with the least-experi­ enced team Claremont High has had for several years. However, with enthusiasm and regularity of practice the team developed a fighting spirit not to be disregarded. The annual tournament was played and from the results of this the general standings were determined. The players were interchanged from singles to doubles combinations, but for most of the games Joe MacHarg played first singles; Emerson Hiler, second sin­ i gles; James St. Clair, third singles; Earl Vought, four+h singles; Ricf ard Strehle and Arthur Tracy, first doubles, Babe Clark and Teddy Strehle, second doubles. A set of four new courts built just north of the football field added much to the pleasure and fine spirit of the team. Although in­ experience showed in the first few matches closer cooperation became evident in the later games. The Colton and Citrus games remain to be played.

Girls' Tennis This year the Claremont High School girls' tennis team was very fortunate, losing only one member by graduation. The tennis season start­ ed with a double ladder tournament, by which the members of the squad were chosen for the first preliminary match. Because of bad weather anci consequently wet courts, the team had very little chance to practice to­ gether, and in the first match of the season, a practice game with Pomona High School, the Claremonters lost. The team was under the leadership of Ellen Miller, who played first doubles with Janet Davis. The singles matches were headed by Niles Davis, in the first singles position, while the other singles players were Jean Driver in second singles, Martha Ray Vanderwood in third singles, and June Beatty in fourth singles. The doubles places were filled by Jean Vanderwood and Virginia Pierce. As we go to press, the girls' tennis season promises to be a success, as they have lost only one game out of the three played. The Colton match has not been played.

Varsity Track DOWNEY - CLAREMONT On March 5th, Claremont journeyed to Downey to try her strength and prowess in the first real track meet of the season. Claremont took eight of the twelve first places, Richard Strehle earning top honors by winning the high hurdles, low hurdles, and the high jump, with Hiler plac­ ing second in the latter. Other first places went to Hiler in the shot put, Bradley in the 880, and Bianchard in the 440. Claremont won the relay to finish on the big end of a 42 to 62 score. Webb also participated in this meet, but without credit.

COLTON - BONITA - CLAREMONT On March 9th, Colton and Bonita came to Claremont to compete on the high school field. It proved to be a momentous day, for Emerson Hiler set a new school record of 47 feet 2 inches in the shot put to shatter Champ Thompson's 1936 record of 43 feet 7 inches. This new record is iikely to stand for some time. Richard Strehle placed first in the high jump, while Hiler took the second position. Landreth took the pole vault, and Walton the broad jump. Although we were outclassed in this meet by Colton who garnered 63 points to our 35, Claremont came back to defeat Colton in the Tri-County meet. Bonita placed last with 25 points. Floyd Talbott set a new "X" record in the 660 yard run of I :37 .6 replacing Cailliefs record of I :38.7 in 1934.

PUENTE - CLAREMONT On March 19th, Claremont invaded Puente for the annual track meet with that school. Here Claremont was really successful, for we took eleven of the twelve events. Strehle placed first in three events - the high hurdles, the low hurdles, and the high jump. Walton took the broacJ jump and the century, and Blanchard the furlong and the quarter. Land­ reth won the pole vault and Hiler the shot put. Lake pocketed tho mile, and the meet was completed with a win by our relay team. The final score was Puente 28, Claremont 40.

CHINO - CLAREMONT On the following Tuesday, March 23, Chino came to Claremont to run off a meet which had had two postponements due to unfavorable weather. Strehle repeated_ his wins in the high hurdles, low hurdles, and the high iump. Walton topped the other entrants in the 100 and 220, Baughman in the broad jump; Hiler took his usual first place in the shot put, and Bob Peck ran a smooth race to win the mile. Claremont took the relay. Claremont chalked up 42 points to their opponents 26.

CHAFFEY - WEBB - POMONA FROSH - CLAREMONT April 26, one week before the big Tri-County meet, was the date of the quadruple meet at Pomona College. The competition with larger schools proved to be very strong but Strehle, Hiler, and Sprinkle managed a �hut-out in the high jump, to tie for first, Richard Strehle setting a new school record of 5 feet IO I/4 inches, replacing Hamilton's record of 5 feet 9 112 inches set in 1922. This gave Claremont IO points in this one event.

Other Claremont scores were Walton in the century, Hiler in the shot put and discus, Strehle in the low hurdles, Clark in the 440, Gaynor in the mile, Baughman in the broad jump, and Landreth in .t_he pole vault. Clare­ mont's relay team came home second. The final scores were as follows: Pomona Frosh 55, Chaffey 42 112, Claremont 26, Webb 6 112.

TRI - COUNTY LEAGUE MEET April 3rd, the first day of Spring Vacation, marked the climax of track season for eight schools who met at Corona to vie for sup�emacy in the realm of the winged foot. Richard Strehle was high point man for the meet with 12 points gathered from firsts in the high hurdles, and the high jump, and a third in the low hurdles. Emerson Hiler, weight man, placed first in the shot put and proved his versatility by placing in the high jump.

Hoyt Landreth, a Junior, tied for second in the pole vault. Gerald Baugh­ man, a Freshman, placed fourth in the broad jump. Hubert Sprinkle placed third in the high jump. Claremont, the smallest school in the League, suc­ ceeded in shutting out all competitors in the high jump by taking the first three places. The schools and their scores were as follows: Corona 31 I /5, Claremont 25 I 12, Citrus 25 I /5, Colton 21 I 3120, Bonita I 0, Chino 9 I/4, Puente 6, Downey 3 I /5.

Lightweight Track The Lighf�eight Track Tearn, made up of the High School men small­ er than those of the Varsity team-the limit is sixty exponents-started the season under the direction of Coach Lyle Martin. The Interclass Track Meet, an annual event at Claremont High School, officially opens the season for this sport late in February. The meets of this division are held on the same date as those of the Varsity. The first of these was with Dow­ ney in which their opponents won by a margin of 15 213 points. They com­ pete in the regular League meets throughout the track season, though handicapped by the loss of their best men to the heavier team, which with this added srength was enabled to win second place in our League.

"Look Billy," said Dac:Jdy, as they both stood at the top of the small hill, still panting trom their walk on this sultry day, · It has waked up since we were lasT here.·' "Yes,·· �illy answered slowly, looking thoughttully at the small lake which was now all theirs, "It dies every winter and then wakes in the spring, doesn · t if?" · Well, it dies to those who only look at the surface, but Billy, you and I know that deep inside it hasn t really died. We know it has only gone tor a little while and that it still lives on in our hearts, and in the spring it comes back.'' Then Uad, lowering himselt easily to the ground and stretching his long tegs comtortably out in tront ot him, conr1nued, "Howers are like that too, son; they live only in the summer but in the rnll when they die they are with us still, blooming beautitully as ever. in our hearts.".

They wer� both silent for awhile looking at the peaceful scene be­ fore them. An undecided little stream pushed its way around the brow ot the hill and, singing its joy to the happy world, tumbled into the pond shimmering contentedly in the sun. A momentary breeze disturbed tho heat waves and stirred the fields of clover into uneasy swells. The steady drone of bees made Billy's pulses throb in time to its even beat. Then he slipped his small moist hand into his Father's big tanned one and glancing again at the little lake mused, "Daddy are people like that too, when they die?"

His tather looked at him, "Yes, Billy, they are. If someone very dear to you should die, his soul lives on, and he comes again into your thoughts, and you know he is not really gone." t3illy lay back on the cool grass and sighed contentedly. Lying be­ side his father this way he was a smaller likeness of him. His blue eye2, as blue and twinkling as his father's, gazed dreamily over the sky above him. He liked these carefree summer days when they could hike to­ gether as though they were both small boys, and too, he would watch the tiny worry line around the corner of his father's mouth disappear.

Gut as he was staring so profoundly at the blue heavens above him, his eyes were arrested by a little grey cloud that came stealing across the sky. He studied it for a moment and was feeling rather sorry for its solitary wandering, when suddenly he was dismayed to see a larger, darker and more important looking cloud come sailing after. Billy sat up feeling that their peaceful rest had been disturbed. Daddy opened one eye.

"What's up?" he asked sleepily. Then before his question could be answered a very distant roll of thunder sounded from the horizon. He jumped up quickly.

"By Jove!" he cried. "Come on Bill, we've got to beat it for home.

Then hand in hand they started running back toward home across the

fislds. But thunder storms travel fast on sultry summer days and large cool drops were soon falling on the thirsty ground.

"Say, young fellow," said Daddy, stopping suddenly, "you're get­ ting wet!" 1·aking off his light coat he wrapped it around the panting boy and swung him to his shoulder. By the time they had reached home the brief storm had spent its fury and had grumblingly retired to a dis­ tant hill to muse upon the damp refreshed earth.

As it was Lucie's day off, Daddy himself helped Billy take a hot bath the moment they got home, and then tucked him into bed entirely forgetting his own dampened clothes.

The next day Dad had left for his office in the city long before Gilly had awakened, and the small boy, left to his own devices, found the house and fields dull now that he had no companion. /\t seven that eve­ ning he was lying in bed staring disconsolately at his toes where they made little white mounds under the sheet when a startling disturbance presented itself in the form of a pillow aimed at his head. On glancing up he sighted his father standing with a very boyish grin on his face in the door way.

"Daddy!" shouted the small boy in glee, bouncing very hard on the soft mattress. "Come in and we'll have a pillow fight!"

The man shook his head, "I have a code in my dose!" he chuckled, and they both laughed guiltily. ·But it seemed he had more than a cold for the next morning Lucie, feeling worried when he was too ill to get up, in desperation summoned a doctor. He was not long in making his diagnosis.

That afternoon a very bewildered Billy was sent to a strange aunt's house in the city. In the dreadful two weeks that followed he would say little to these people who were so eager to pity and comfort. He ate and slept more as a duty and habit than a wish. He longed for his father as only a small boy can, and suddenly found himself feeling very old. He would be quiet for hours, trying not to attract the aHention of the aunt whose mouth was a hard, bright red line, which, Billy found, twitched when she was exasperated. He once overheard her saying to some of her extremely noisy guests, "He is so very strange!" They all laughed.

Billy's cheeks had burned and he had struggled hard to keep back the troublesome tears.

Then one day Lucie came for him. He saw her eyes•: were very red and she seemed afrqid to trust her voice to words. It was not until they were walking up the sidewalk to the house that she explained.

She put her arm ever so gently around Billy's sturdy small shoulders and said very fast. "Your Daddy has been very sick, dear, and he has asked for you so often I came for you. The words though spoken softly and sadly, struck on Billy's ears in a loud even voice. "Going to die-Going to die!" Lucie left him then in the garden, and he lay on the grass all afternoon. The wind sighed gently and rustled the cool poplar leaves.

"Going to die," they whispered sadly over and over. The sun was sink­ ing behind the trees and stretched their shadows out before them on the green grass.

No, father wouldn't die-he couldn't die-what would Billy's small world be like without Dad? Once people died, they were gone; they couldn't come back-he knew it. His mother never came back. Of course he was unable to remember what she was like, but she never came back to show him. So Dad couldn't die-he couldn't!

Lucie came for him. "He wants to see you now." They walked fast to the house. His heart beat very loud in his ears and a tiny voice cried above it, "He's going to die!"

Before they went'in he saw several cars parked in the driveway and wondered angrily why they were there.

They went up the winding staircase and stopped before Dad's door.

"Go in, dear:," said Lucie.

He opened the door slowly; in one brief glance he saw the nurse sitting quietly by the window, the doctor standing by her. Then he saw father lying thin and still in the bed, white, even under his thick tan. He opened his eyes slowly as he became conscious of Billy's presence in the room. Billy walked slowly to the side of the bed.

"Son!" whispered Father.

"Daddy!" he held back a sob in his throat, his eyes felt dry and hot.

He caught Dad's hand and held it fast. He wouldn't let him die.

"Goodbye, Billy," father sighed and smiled slowly. "Take care of yourself, old man!" his voice was scarcely audible. The nurse's face was hidden in her hands; the doctor had turned his back. Billy tried hard to swallow the hot lump in his throat. He wanted to cry out, to tell Dad he wouldn't let him die, but as he watched, his father looked far away; he felt the hand he was holding relax and he was alone.

He walked to the door and opened it. His smail world was wheeling dizzily. Outside in the hall a group of people were talking in low voices.

When they saw him they all stopped and looked embarrassed. The aunt held out her arms to him. There were tears in her eyes but her mouth was still a hard set line. He rushed past her and ran hard to his room at the end of the hall while the long pent up tears scalded his cheeks. He threw himself sobbing on the bed. Waves of rage toward all those helpless people swept through his small body. Dad had died and they hadn't clone a thing to help him.

Then he heard the door open slowly. He buried his face deeper into the pillow. He felt a familiar cool hand on the back of his neck and a dear voice said, "Is my boy crying?"

The lump in his throat was gone, and Daddy had him in his arms, "You see, Billy, I came back."

And the little boy smiled and slept.

Upon the littered highway as I hurried, Scarce knowing where or why, and yet with haste, Disturbed by qualms ,frustrated hopes, and worried About the mean, distorted world, I paced, I trod upon, and crushed, an ant that scurried Too swift, despite its load, beneath my heel, When I would fain have checked the fatal tread.

A tragedy too transient to appeal To man's concern, it, albeit led Once more to meditations which have perplexed Man since the dawn of reasoning and thought: Why are we here one speck of time, the next No longer to exist, to be forgot, As, merging into vastness, history's frail Dwindles to infinity? The thought Before which low and mighty equal quail Beset me then. My troubled brain revolved The countless mysteries which awe the mind, The problems, shrouded, complex, and involved, Which magnify the meanness of mankind, Reveal the selfishness, the hate, the greed, The sordid schemes, the conflicts, and the sorrow, Depravity and anguish, all to feed And glut desires of the flesh, which borrow Far too often from infernal sources.

Such symbols wakened serious misgiving Within me, for to contemplate these forces Caused me to doubt the benefits of living, And ask: Why suffer, strive, and sacrifice, And store up trifling knowledge in one's brain, Yes, why, if after one has paid the price, Frustration comes, and it be all in vain?

All theorize. It was twelve years since the close of the Civil War, and still Tom, looking back on those four years of war, was filled with bitterness. During those years his father had lost everything of value, including his health.

Tom had wished to stay in the East so that he could get even with Cap­ tain McCormack whom he blamed for his mother's death. He could never forget that night when McCormack had come to his home at the head of fifteen soldiers in blue uniforms. They had forced the family from the house and burned it. His mother had developed pneumonia as the result of sleeping in the open, and a few days later she died.Tom hacJ never forgiven this man; he had sworn to kill him someday. But he had had to take care of his father, so they had started west, just twelve years ago today. With his job of driving the stage between Big Creek ancJ Salina he managed to make a living for the two of them. He was going back to find McCormack some day, and when he did his bitterness would all be gone.

But his passengers-two, three, five of them. No women; that was something to be thankful for. The Indians seemed to know when there were women on the stage. Of course, some times they made a mistake and attacked the stage when there were no women at all. But they didn't come up and apologize or ride off again. It was spring now and that in­ creased the danger of the Indian attacks.

"All in?" Tom shouted, looking cross the prairie.They were off with a jerk, and soon the only shade from the hot relentless sun, was far be­ hind. Three hours later Tom saw the trees ahead that meant a watering place for the horses and a cool place to rest. The horses seemed to sense this, for they instinctively trotted faster.

When they had finally squeaked to a stop, Tom unhitched the horses and lay down in the tall grass. Once more his thoughts returned to McCormack, and his silent promise to get even some day. He was now thirty-two and none of the bitterness that had welled up within him that night had died. He hated this man more intensely than ever. It seemed as if all his bitterness was concentrated against this one man who had ruined his life.

Slowly he rose and began to hitch the horses to the stage again.

He made his usual trip around the stage to see that everythit')g was in its place and securely tied. Coming back, he glanced through the window and seeing how crowded the men were, climbed up to make room for one of them beside him.

The man who crawled clumsily atop the stag� was past fifty, and his fat, wrinkled face was moist with perspiration. Tom turned to him with a smile and his eyes were friendly.

"Going out west to make your ... " he stopped suddenly. The man next to him was looking at him in a friendly manner, and yet Tom saw that same cruel gleam he had seen twelve years ago. In an instant he knew

that the man beside him was Captain McCormack.

"What were you saying, young feller?" asked McCormack in a deep voice.

Didn't he recognize him? Maybe he had changed in those twelve years. Yes, Tom guessed the sun had tanned him and his hair was some­ what lighter. The ways of the west had hardened him, too, so it was no wonder that McCormack didn't know him. As Tom was about to answer he noticed a swirl of dust in the distance. Whether it was caused by ponies or buffalo he didn't know, but at the rate it was traveling he soo11 would. They stopped on a little hill and he saw they were ponies, painted ones. Tom looked at �cCormack, but this, he knew, was no time tor per­ sonal feelings.

"Everyone find cover and shoot as you've never shot before!" He was talking rapidly, as a man talks who has a lot to say and little tim3 to say it in.

"They will circle around and gradually close in. Make every shot count and don't show yourself any more than necessary."

He was the youngest man of the group, yet in experience, the oldest.

The men took his orders as rapidly as he gave them and soon they had erected an apology for a breastwork. If only some one could get through to the Fort, a few miles distant, the soldiers could possibly get there in time. They couldn't all get through, Tom knew, but if one man started now, the Indians could be held off until he was clear. Should he go? He knew the trail better than any of them. What if he didn't get back in time?

He would be safe anyhow and McCormack-Well, thought Tom, McCor­ mack had it coming to him. Then he remembered that night. But he saw different things this time. He saw the easy grace with which McCormack had ridden the fine, black horse. He saw the free way in which he gave his orders and how his men had respected him. Should he tell McCormack to go? He could get through; Tom knew that, and, also that they would believe him at the fort. What about the other men? Should one of them be allowed to go? While all of these things raced through his mind he was mechanically working with the guns in front of him, loading them, puttin-:-1 extra ammunition in a convenient place, telling the men what to do and when to do it.

Then, suddenly, in a cold, steely, voice, "McCormack, take that right front horse from the stage. He's mine, and the fastest one of the bunch.

You'll have to ride bareback. Go to the Fort and bring back the soldiers.

Follow the trail on the right; it will lead directly to the fort. Ride fast and don't stop for anything. When you get within sight of the fort, start to wave something white. When you're inside the gates, ask for Forsythe and tell him the stage from Big Creek is being attacked."

Tom turned from the man he had hated, and, looking down the long barrel of his rif!e, tried to hide the new light that had come into his, eyes.
