Four big changes in school life.

One of the many changes at Claremont high school is the interdisciplinary studies. This class is headed by Mr. Pawley, Mrs. Shamah, Mr. Ellena, Mr. Ackman, Mrs. Gray, and Joel Button. The interdisciplinary system is a self-contained classroom. The atmosphere is relaxed and this system stresses responsible learning. The students feel that it is more personal. Everybody gets to know everybody else better!

Another change in the system is the Traditional schedule. This gives the student a more structured schedule rather than that of the Flex-Module system. Classes start at eight o'clock and end at two o'clock, with a lunch break in between. It was designed for the student not quite ready for the Flex-Modular system.

Adult Studies took over Claremont at night this year and got off with a big start. Many classes had waiting lists because of the interest in the community. This exciting program is headed by Mr. Freitas

And still another exciting thing happening on our campus is the Family of Man course, headed by Bob Shamah, Kathy Hanawalt, and Leslie Wessman. In this class English and History are not considered two separate classes, but considered one study. The students feel they achieve their own goals rather than what a teacher might want. Students learn by actually experiencing things rather than reading about them; this is called experietial learning.

We have really seen change this year and we've grown from it too. This way a student has had more ideas to choose from and can find what really suits his own personal needs.

I've never met a person, I don't care what his condition, in whom I could not see possibilities. I don't care how much a man may consider himself a failure, I believe in him, for he can change the thing that is wrong in his life anytime he is ready and prepared to do it. Whenever he develops the desire, he can take away from his life the thing that is defeating it. The capacity for reformation and change lies within.

VARSITY FOOTBALL

Under the leadership of Coach Esper Keiser the Pack went through Hell Week and the flu to meet the old rivals of Bonita and Glendora. The only scoring during the preseason came against Glendora with two VanZee field goals.

The whole events of preseason brough the individuals of Claremont to the togetherness and team unity known as Pack Pride. Rising to the challenge of Upland and the rest of the teams, the Pack went on to win the first three season games. They then lost to Chino where the Pack played a hard and physical game. After losing the next two outings, the Pack found themselves tied for second place in S.A.L. At the end of the season Claremont drew from a hat and won the right to a C.I.F. berth and faced Santa Ana Valley to end the season.

VARSITY WATER POLO

This year Claremont, under the direction of Coach Page Remillard, put together a great Water Polo qua with many outstanding individuals, despite the fac there were no returning lettermen. The 'Pack compil decisive victories over three of the other four lea e teams. Its only league loss came against pland, onl_a long and hard fought battle ending in overtime. At the end of the season, Claremont placed four e the All-S.A.L. First Team, while Upland only plac three. Claremont's water people were led by J unioSmith, Craig Hildebrand, Paul Beasom and Da,·e McCutcheon, and Seniors Hubie Wang, Dan lob and Russ Taylor. Juniors Stu Stoddard, Tom t. C and Dan Harrison, with Sophomores John Borland Marty Jackson provided this year's depth. With ei h returning lettermen next year, the 'Pack Polo squad I to be the class of the league and will be looking for a possible C.I.F.CHAMPIONSHIP.

FROSH-SOPH WATER POLO

The 1974 FroshSoph Polo squad was one of the most powerful teams that Clarmont High has ever had or seen. An overall record of 18-2 and a league record of 3-1 is undenieable evidence that Claremont High Will have an intimidaing program in the coming years. The team was led by Most Valuable Player Jim Gaylord, John Oliver, Charles Abbott, Jim Moore, Tim Pixley, Mike Martin and Jack Sowin, who are all Sophomores. Also on the team are Freshmen Dave Kubes, Greg Groves, Robert Colen, Jim Holcombe, Jeff Taylor, Eric Tilgass and Jim Wesson.

.• Oh-fl2, not again.

Frosh-Soph CrossCountry: This year the Frosh-Soph harriers placed second in league. Dennis McCutheon, Dave Ardrey and Steve Harris usually fought for top honors, and Conrad Lillegard, Kevin Cavanaugh, Paul Kittleson and Brian Wemple provided the 'Pack's strong back-up strength. Dennis McCutcheon and Dave Ardrey often ran Varsity, exhibiting up-coming sophomore talent which the rest of the league will have to contend with during the next two years

VARSITY CROSS-COUNTRY

This year's Cros-Country team was once again blessed with good depth and was probably the best team Claremont has had since the 1971 team, and in many ways better. Led By Captians Gary Ardrey and Mark Ramstead, the team posted a perfect 7-0 dual meet season, including a stunning 24-31 victory over Upland. This had been their first dual meet loss in six years, after attaining 42 straight wins. At this point, the 'Pact was rated 2nd in C.I.F., but may of their best runners fell sick, resulting in a disappointing 3rd in S.A.L. Finals and 9th in C.I.F. Other fine runners included early-season bloomer Clark Harris, late-season star Bakke Wood, Co-Captain Kib Lyon, Chris Kearney, Dave Harris, and John Halliday. This excellent group broke countless records, both on their own home course and on opposing team's courses.

Next year the 'Pack Harriers will be losing many of their top men, but Coach Martinez is confident that if his tean can stay healthy, they can live up to expectations next year and win C.I.F. outright.

JUNIOR VARSITY CROSS-COUNTRY

With a strong showing all season culminating with the S.A.L. Finals at Mt. S.A.C. the J.V. harrier's wound up second in League to a strong Upland team. Depth was again a factor, as Rodney Click, Doug Gillingham, Derek Mowell, Craig Sauer, and Mike Leonard (Green Jeans) usually led the team. Earlier in the season John Halliday and Chris Kearney also helped the junior Varsity team.

BASKETBALL

VARSITY

Claremont High's basketball team experienced a different kind of season this year. The San Antonio League was one of the toughest in CIF., with two of its' teams rated in the top five; Garey ranked number one and Ganesha close behind.

Claremont started out its season capturing the Consolation Championship at the Upland-Montclair Tournament, second place in the Azusa Tournament, and fourth place in the Chino Tournament. Opening league play, Claremont was setback by two hard defeats. One was a disappointing I-point loss to Pomona followed by an overtime defeat to the Damien Spartans.

As Coach Smith says, it is hard to begin losing after a team gets off to a good and quick start, and both Ganesha & Garey started off with identical 6-0 records. The 'Pack was also plagued with the flu while trying to handle these teams back to back. Rebounding itself back into shape, Claremont found its form and went on the triumphantly hand the Upland Highlanders a sounding defeat by ten points.

One thing that has remained high throughout the season is the team morale and spirit, despite the inconsistency of !icing able to put each players 'hot nights' together more often. Some of the tine players on this years squad includes Mike Toomay, who was one of the league's leading scorers, including a 35-point performance against Chino. Greg Garey, who is a Senior guard played excellent defense all year and he was assisted at the guard positions with Seniors Dave Allen, Barry Sayles, Jeff Wiencek, and Tony Johnson. Playing at forward is Senior Kent Stalwick (who is a three year Varsity letterman) & Dave Abraham. Playing at forward, as well as center, is Junior Rob Fossom. Other Juniors to this years' squad are guards Chris Clark and Dave Brigante, and forward Tom McDonald. One bright spot for Claremont's future, is the presence of Freshman Derek Britton, who is the first Freshman to play Varsity ball at Claremont High.

JUNIOR VARSITY

This year's Junior Varsity team has had a close season at the halfway mark. Their record is 4-3 in the league. All of their losses have been by a close margin and the cumulative points that they have lost by is only twelve. Coach Haertel's team figures to finish with a good record though, if the games they lost before are turned around by the home court advantage.

The team has gradually been improving behind the scoring punch of Frank Throop. Other J .V. stars include Juniors Bruce Daniels, Jeff Rodine, and Rusty Shannon. Filling out the squad are Juniors Steve Swetnam, Paul Martin, Jeff DesCombes, Jeff Cortese, Dan Healy, Tom Simpson and Tim Vislay. Sophomores on the squad are Sam Quinones, & Chris Pawley.

SOPHOMORES

Under the new coaching of Stuart Gornbein, the Sophomore basketball team has put together a winning overall record, with hope of possibly taking the league title, which doesn't seem to impossible. Coach Gornbein hasn't seen a team in the league yet which can't be beaten by the Sophomores when they have their game together.

This teams' greatest asset is their extreme strength on the 'boards'. They seem to have great rebounding power. They are led by captain Kevin Rullman, who plays forward, and center Kelly Gordien. There are really no high-scorers on the team although Kevin and Kelly, along with Charlie Granger get most of the points. The starting five is filled out by forward Kyle Fortson and guard Charlie Thompson. This squad also has a good sub in Brian Zell.

Waiting for one more point.

Freshman

"The outlook wasn't pleasant for the Freshmen Five that day " So Coach Jack Helber has once again spoken. This years team has done fairly well, and has had to learn how to play more of the team game. Other than getting blown off the court only once, every game has been close. The widest spread of points was only eight. Of the someday future Varsity players, Jim Young seems to be one of the best. He can shoot, rebound, & can play every position on the court. Playing at guard is diminutive "Jeff Olson. On this years squad the 'purest shooter' is Gary Schaller. The steadiest player is Roger Bee Bower, who is always there when you need him. The center is Bryan Chilton and the one player who is always hustlin', is Mark McCallon. With a little more experience, this team will become a lot better.

VARSITY

San Antonio League Titles in soccer are becoming a habit for Claremont. The Pack has won the league the last three years and has gone all the way to the C.I.F. Finals the last two years. This year Claremont isn't about to stop at number 2. The team wants it all.

It seems to be very possible this year. Claremont is led by its "Big Three" -Gesner DoCarmo, Jim Van Zee, and Gregg Kaufmann. DoCarmo, who, as a Junior, set a C.I. F. scoring record by finding the nets 46 times last year. He is very close now to setting a career scoring record, and that is just some of the evidence of why he was an all C.I.F. selection. Another all C.I. F. selection of last year was Jim VanZee. Coming behind DoCarmo in last year's team scoring, Jim, as a Junior, figures to be off to another great season. He was named to the All-Tournament Team in the South Torrance Tourney. Along with Van Zee as a captain is Junior Gregg Kaufmann. Gregg was an All-League selection last year. Gregg is off to a fast start this year, with his scoring shots coming in handy.

Besides the "Big Three," Claremont looks to still be in good condition with returning lettermen Jerry Van Zee, Paul Carroll, Kevin Oss, Harvey Macaulay, and goalie Casey Roberts. Roberts was named the AllTournament goalie in the 32 team South Torrance Tournament.

Newcomers to this years Varsity include Mark Kaufmann, Bob Scarcia, Chuck Purdy, John Hawes, Ken Berry, Mark Sbertole, Steve Winter, and Freshman Scott Kegans. This kind of talent will be hard for other teams to handle on the road to the C.I.F. Finals.

JUNIOR VARSITY

The main thing the Junior Varsity has behind it is spirit. But there is talent there also. This team led by the scoring punch of Sophomore David Anderson, seems to have all its opponents put away by half-time. Again, like Claremont teams of the past, they have the ability to control the midfield and to score goals. The offense is well equipt with Curt Nelson, Robert Guttman, Dave Anderson, Mike Stanley, Tai Martin, and Tim Dickinson. The J .V.'s also boast a strong defensive line led by Mel Pompa, who came out of his goalie position of last year. Assisting Pompa is Mark Layne and Jim Todd.

Heading the goalie position for this year's J .V.'s are Sophomores Scott Kolves and Jack Sow in. The talented and spirited J .V.'s leave Coaches Rieger & Vaskis with little to worry about in the future.

FROSH-SO PH

Claremont is blessed this year with being able to have a third soccer team. The Frosh-Soph team has no regular schedule but manages to play arranged games. The team, coached by Jim Baugus and assisted by Jerry Morgan, looks impressive. They even beat the Azusa J.V.'s so far this year. The team is led by Mark Speer and Jerry Todd, with strong defensive work by Mark Estupinian & Brian Andrus. The goals are kept somewhat tight by goalies Mike Folden & Grant Warhurst. These players look to make another good Junior Varsity team next year.

VARSITY

Claremont High School Wrestling and the wrestling you see on Channel 13 are a little different. First of all, the style you see our high school athletes compete in isn't fake. Claremont just might have the real "Crusher" in either Jeff Whitton or Randy Coste. As a Sophomore, J elf won the San Antonio League Championship in the 198 pound weight class, and represented the 'Pack in C.I. F. competition. So far, with an undefeated record this year, Whitton figures to pin down his second league title in the Heavy Weight Division. The team is carried by Junior captains Whitton and Randy Coste. Coste finished second in league last year and also figures to win it this year, going on to C.1.F. afterwards for his second year in a row. Randy came in third for two tournaments and finished second in the State A.A. U. Greco-Roman Championship. Also expected to win league is Junior Duane Dimos.

This year's team is generally a young team, consisting of only four Seniors which includes Captain Sam Cole. His is probably expected to place in the league finals along with David Kauwe, Geoff Doane, and Jim Adams.

The Wolfpack wrestlers are always consistantly strong in the middle weight classes. There is strong competition in the I 06 weight class between Adams and Tom Brand and both look very important for next year's team along with Danny Black in the 98 pound class.

Varsity wrestlers that will be pivotal men for matches, meaning that if they do well, the team will do well are Mike Davis, Leon Fragolle, Steve Toothacher, Lindsey Brewer, and Kelly Dack.

Coach Jim Broncattclo's team figures to do well in league despite Upland, who is the top rated team in the Valley. Claremont could be very surprising this year.

This season, for the baseball team, looks like a rebuilding year. The 'Pack', which figures to finish in the middle of the league, started off the season struggling. The team, led by the hitting of senior Greg Thompson and the pitching of senior John Huddleston and junior Mel Pompa (who pitched a no-hitter in the Elk's Tournament) should improve as the season goes on.

The infield looks to be set except for second base where Carl Cervantes and Rob Hearr share the position. Rounding out the infield, Calremont has Marc Robertson at first, Dave Allen at third, Rich Tullis at short and Ken MacLeod behind the plate.

The 'Claremont 9' has an outfield led by Thompson in left field and Dan Thomas in center field. Right field is up for grabs between junior Dan Healy and sophomore Paul Sokolowski.

Carl Cervantes

The 'J aves' are getting the raves this year for their outstanding play. Compiling a 4-0 record thus far they have become the team to beat for the rest of the season. During the Elk's Tournament they reached the Finals and really should have won this one also. They have a lot of power with the bat as can be seen by their .302 batting average for the team. Pitcher Brad Kirkendall pitched a no-hitter recently facing only 22 batters.

Coached by Jack Helber, this team is the one to watch in the future.

TRACK

This year's track team is again looking forward to a profitable year if they can keep the whole team together at all the meets. Sprinting is Wolfpack's only weakness; however, the coaches are looking forward to big improvements. Leading the team are coaches Hal Lynn, Rick Whittam, and Rich Martinez and tri-captains Mark Ramstead, Toby Swick, and Gary Ardrey.

The sprinters are headed by Freshman Derek Britton, Tom Miller, an improving Chuck Purdy, and an occasional Mark Ramstead. The 440 boasts Mark Hammond, Mark Ramstead, and Mike Woodley and looks strong. Ramstead also leads the team in the 880 with John Halliday running a close second. The mile is looking tough, as is the two-mile, with Gary Ardrey, Clark Harris, and Blake Wood leading the team. Upland's prestigious distancemen were defeated in both events, proving the strength of the distances.

The hurdlers have been running well, but improvement is needed to face the league's best hurdlers. The injured Toby Swick, who can run sprints, hurdles, and long jump, has been off form because of earlier injuries, but if he can recover, it will really help the team. Sophomore Doug Maxwell and Alex DeVilbiss lead the hurdle corps.

The field events are against the Pack's high point. Sam Trobee, Steve Boe, and Jon Boehlke lead the shot putters, with Lyman Chinn, and Dave Abraham showing big improvements. Sophomore superstar Kelly Gordien heads the high jump, with Steve Boe and Steve Forman jumping second and third. Jim Zeffery is helping the team in long jump, with many others, including frosh-sopher Jeff Faley, looking potentially strong. Barry Sayles and Dee Dillon are the top pole vaulters.

The 440 relay team is potentially good if they can hold on to the baton, and our mile relay looks to be able to compete with the best of them.

TENNIS

With only one returning letterman, one senior, and a crop of newly promoted J. V.'s, Claremont expected 197 5 to be a rebuilding year. But pre-season matches have shown that the 'Pack' is stronger than it was expected to be, although this season still remains to be a year for building. Playing well against Glendora and Charter Oak and posting convincing wins over Upland, Montclair, Chino and Garey (scores against Garey & Chino were 26-2, & 27-1), has left Claremont in first place.

Some of the varsity players this year, coached by Jerry Morgan, include singles players, Henry Welsh, Senior Captain Tim McCandless, Greg Kaufman, Tom Ford, John Dennison, and Russ Edmonds. Doubles teams are Captain Jeff Arce with Mark Christian, and John Erickson with Tai Martin, who could very well be the two strongest teams in the league. Bill Delaney and Derek Mowell also played doubles, helping out the team in the earlier part of the season.

A new crop of freshmen, as well as all interested girls, and a few sophomores, invaded the tennis ranks this year to provide for excellent depth for future teams while competing for varsity and junior varsity spots this season.

GOLF

Perenially strong Claremont has put together another fine team for this year. Posting an undefeated record thus far seems to indicate how capable the 'Pack' is of capturing another S.A.L. title. The team is headed by Coach Ron Skaggs and his assistant Bud Spears. Seniors Chuck Rosin, Andy Kopple, and Frank Sow in lead the team along with Juniors Steve Ashton, and Scott Sullivan. Sophomore John Mack also helps add to the Varsity squad this year.

The sun is setting and it is time

To remember my life

And all my dreams

And hopes of the future

To remember the things I loved

The mountains

The forests

The sea

To recall the things I knew

Art

Music

Myself

And to be able to say I loved.
